Starter Quest
Stealing is all well and good, but in Scalvoris, things will have to be different. The people of Scalvoris lived under the Twenty Pirate Lords, and they are wise to the game of thievery. Sure, you could get away with it, but if one of the old savvy crew catches you, they may take your fingers for their trouble. Or maybe, just maybe, you pick the right mark, and when you steal from him, he offers you a job instead.
"Slick move, boy. Ye ready to make some real coin?" He asks.
Well, are you?

Mortalborn Parent Story
Everybody in that little street in Andaris’ Lowtown district wondered how Mrs. Thorn who was already in her forties and had been married to her husband for more than fifteen arcs without having a child had suddenly fallen pregnant and given birth to a baby boy.
Some claimed that Mrs. Thorn and her husband had adopted a child and decided to pass it off as their own. Others insisted that they were raising the child of a dead relative. Some even claimed that they had abducted a child because they had been so desperate. According to the gossips of Lowtown, there had always been something off about Mrs. Thorn.
She wasn’t like the other, hard-working, stuck-up and conservative wives in the district. She danced in the rain, she laughed when there was a thunderstorm, and she sang when she was working, all those songs about heroes and villains and spirits that visited you in your dreams, and she didn’t dress like a proper lady either. Her clothes were colourful, and her makeup, the gossips who never wore more than a bit of lipstick said, was too much.
There were so many rumours, but nobody could have guessed the truth. Mrs. Thorn hadn’t adopted a child, and she hadn’t abducted one either. She’d met a man, a most wonderful man, a divine man, that had given her what her husband hadn’t managed to give her.
She was forty-two at the time, and she had been working as a servant in the house of a wealthy judge in Andaris for several arcs by then. It was a demanding job. Her employer’s wife and his daughters were quite rude to her and treated her more like a slave, but she didn’t mind. It didn’t matter to her. She smiled when she made their beds and cleaned their rooms and even when she emptied their chamber pots, and when she thought that nobody could hear her, she sang. Everything was better with a little song in her opinion. Some looked down on her because she was only someone’s servant, but her thoughts were free.
She met him at one of the numerous social gatherings that took place in the judge’s house. She was just preparing a tray with snacks for the judge’s guests in the kitchen, softly singing a song about a sailor that fell in love with a mermaid, when she could suddenly hear someone clap their hands. She was so shocked that she nearly dropped the tray and abruptly stopped singing.
At first, she was afraid of him. He was a very tall man, broad-shouldered, with dark hair, but he had the most beautiful smile, and his voice was so gentle and kind. “I’ve never heard a more beautiful song”, the man said, and she knew that he meant it. There was something special about him, something that she hadn’t seen in any other man, not even in her husband. He reminded her of the songs and the stories she loved so much.
She’d never minded her life before, even though they were poor and didn’t have any children. Her husband was a simple man who didn’t understand the things she dreamed of at night, but she loved him all the same. In that moment, she couldn’t help but wonder what her life could have been like if things had gone differently though – what her life might be like if she had met someone like this man who she simply assumed to be one of the judge’s numerous guests instead of the man she was married to now.
“Can you sing another song for me?” he asked her, and she handed the tray to one of the servants in order to join him outside, on one of the balconies, where they would have a bit of privacy. She didn’t care that the judge’s wife would likely scream at her for not doing her job properly. She didn’t think of her husband. All that she could think of was that man that had something about him that was out of this world, or, maybe, simply magical.
She sang a song for him, and then another, and when he asked her if she wanted to join him in one of the bedrooms upstairs, she went with him willingly. For a moment, as she lay next to him, her head on his chest, she wondered what would happen if she asked him to take her with him – she barely knew him, but she was already quite enamoured with him – if she left her husband and came with him, if they travelled the world together.
Would her dreams come true then?
“I’m sorry”, he said, as if he could read her thoughts. “But I cannot take you with me. I have given you a gift though, something that you wanted all your life.” She was confused, and for a moment she was even angry, even though she knew that he spoke the truth – she was not aware of his divine nature, but she knew that he was much more than he appeared to be.
They parted ways but a break later, and she never saw him again. She went back to her husband and her little house in Lowtown. A part of her was slightly bitter from that trial onwards, but another part of her was almost overjoyed, because something special had happened that night, something that the other wives in her street would never have.
A few seasons after she had met him, she gave birth to a boy that she named Devin. She never told her husband that she had cheated on him – she knew that it was wrong, but she just couldn’t regret what she had done – and her husband never asked. He’d been wondering if their childlessness was his fault for a while and suspected that the boy was not truly his. He was fine with it for the most part though, and he loved him even though there was something quite different about him. He’d always dreamed of having a son one trial.
Divination
Scrying
By moving a hand across a reflective, translucent, refractive or luminescent surface or even smoke or a burning fire, Devin can temporarily turn it into a mirror that shows him a glimpse of an event that takes place in the future* of the city that he is currently in.
Devin can only see events that take place in the current cycle. Furthermore, he can only use this ability once per trial. After using this ability, he will feel slightly confused and lightheaded for several bits.
Attempting to use this ability more often, will result in a splitting headache that will make it hard for him to function properly, and Devin won’t see anything at all, of course.
- This ability is tied directly to the calendar of the city that Devin is currently in. It allows him to predict the calendar event in a rather general way – meaning that the only information available to him will be what’s in the calendar. He won’t be able to predict any details.
Doorways
Forced Entry
By outlining the shape of a door in front of a wall or another kind of barrier with his hands, Devin can create a temporary opening and access that which that can be found behind the wall or barrier which enables him to bypass locks, guards and other unpleasant obstacles that make a thief’s work so much harder.
Of course, the opening doesn’t manifest instantly. How long it takes for the opening to manifest depends on his Meditation skill as he has to focus on it. Only Devin himself can make the opening disappear, but others can walk through it as long as it is there. In order to make the opening disappear, Devin has to move a hand across it.
At Novice Meditation, it takes 40 trills for the opening to become big enough for Devin to walk through, 20 trills for the opening to become big enough for Devin to crawl through and 10 trills for the opening to become big enough for Devin to stick his head or a hand through it.
These numbers are reduced to 20/10/5 trills at Competent Meditation, 10/5/2 trills at Expert Meditation and 5/2/1 trills at Master Meditation. No matter what Devin does, he cannot create an opening that is bigger than a grown man (which means that he can’t create an opening that is big enough for him to drive a wagon through it, for example).
The same numbers apply to closing the opening.
At Novice Meditation, the opening remains for 15 bits, at Competent Meditation it remains for 25 bits, at Expert Meditation it remains for 40 bits, and at Master Meditation it remains for a break.
Devin can only create one opening at a time.
Should a part of someone’s body be inside the opening when it closes, they become trapped.
How long it takes them to free themselves, depends on their Strength skill.
At Unskilled Strength it takes them 2 bits to free themselves, at Novice Strength it takes them 1 bit to free themselves, at Competent Strength it takes them 30 trills to free themselves, and at Expert Strength it takes them 15 trills to free themselves. An individual with Master Strength can free themselves in 5 trills.
Goats
Fainting Goat
There is a breed of goat called the fainting goat that falls over when startled. As the Mortalborn of Goats, Devin is capable of doing something similar – no, something even better. When he plays dead, those that are around him, including people and creatures that are about to attack, lose interest in him and focus on something else, or just walk away. For the ability to work, Devin mustn’t say anything, of course, and it stops working the moment he stands up again - which means that he'd better try to make sure that everybody is out of range beforehand.
