Ruins of Nightmare
- Cylus events:
- 3, approach Rickith for help learning the difference between a divorce and an annulment
- 6, return to Faldrass with divorce, find Sade gone. Sit on the beach and despair.
- 8, calendar event, In the perpetual twilight, people report their shadows behaving oddly—moving independently, pointing toward things, or seeming to whisper. Most dismiss it as imagination, but some panic, fearing the Shadow Beasts of ten arcs ago are returning. Scuffles break out in taverns, and over the following trials, a handful of wild-eyed "Doomsayers" appear on street corners, warning of darkness to come.
- 9, calendar event, Fishermen and coastal dwellers report strange, bioluminescent lights moving beneath the waters around Scalvoris. The lights seem to follow boats and pulse in patterns. Some fear they are Emea-born creatures; others think lost souls. Investigation needed.
- 9, also calendar event same day, A merchant ship runs aground near Almund in poor visibility. The crew is rescued, but the cargo hold contains exotic animals and goods from distant lands that now need temporary homes and buyers. Point Bank loot list:
- 1 more night glow gem (160)
- Fallen star staff (75)
- Metal morph (100)
- Echo boxes (300)
- Marionette (120)
- Total: 755
- 22, calendar event, Reports spread across settlements of people experiencing unusually vivid, shared dreams during this trial. Many dreamers describe the same location: a frozen palace with a throne of ice, and a figure sitting upon it, watching. Is this Emea bleeding through, or something else?
- 30, calendar event, The 30th Cylus sees people all over the island releasing lanterns into the sky throughout the trial. From the 'dawn' to when the sun finally reappears, there are lanterns in the sky above Scalvoris. The people are very clear that they get the light one trial before anyone else on Idalos. They make it for themselves and, of course they do. They are Scalvorians, after all.
- Ashan events:
- 1-5, Sade dreamwalks to Jin. Time for a TALK
- Toutouye trip:
- 27: Beacon: Rest the night. Is tracked down by Gaul Jundland and his apprentices who want Jinyel to tag along on a Scaltoth expedition, to see if Gaul wants to hire him. The expedition: get a sick client to the Wild Witch for graft treatment after Anudih healers fail to heal him.
- 29: Meet the healer. Jin and the Witch realize the other is a Grafter and a healer, Jin tries to smooth out her appearance a bit. PM Peg about success.
- 31: Depart from healer, go through Scofflaw's Folly and encounter Mur'thi tribefolk. Adventure zone.
- 36: Almund: Jin agrees to help Gaul on their next hunt: a "giant hyena" that also escaped from the ship. Jin thereby encounters and befriends Agri instead of killing her.
- 40: Egilrun: General maintainence around the Egilrun cottage, mess with the garden a bit.
- 42: Egilrun: With Tazi's help, explores Slag's Deep for some gemstones. Buff mining skill, look for the Warden's room for Woe
- 50: Sweetwine: Looks for "Champion Boo" to try and befriend the bumble bears. Also looking to tell a story to the grizzly bees in exchange for royal honey.
- Learns about the Mer cultural exchange classes. Interrogates the Mer on what the hell is marine biology, why are life forms so weird and how can he differentiate them
- Maybe solo lesson with a Mer? Out in the waters identifying species. In exchange Jin hunts the Mer's favorite prey, seal, which always jumps onto land to escape.
- Okun acquisition: Rhiannon and Jin (also Kisaik) converge on a treasure location. Jin looking for a hotstone?
- 15, calendar event, Thousands of brightly coloured songbirds arrive on Scalvoris from distant lands. However, they seem agitated, circling certain locations repeatedly. What are they trying to show people?
- 22, calendar event, Strange melodic sounds begin emanating from caves throughout the Scalvoris Mountains. Some say they hear voices in the music; others claim it's just the wind. Investigation encouraged.
- 61, calendar event, Ashan's Walk Festival, This marks the middle of the season and the people of Scalvoris undertake a pilgrimage of sorts. From a set point in their town / village to the main place of worship, people lay petals on the ground in honour of the Immortal Ashan. All shops and businesses are closed on this trial, so that everyone can experience freedom ~ it is said that the only people who toil on Ashan's Walk are healers and undertakers.
- 67, calendar event, Minor earthquakes shake several settlements. The University suspects volcanic activity, but miners report hearing rhythmic pounding from deep underground. Rumours spread that the sounds are emanating from Slag's Deep...
- 115, seasonal modded event, A spectacular thunderstorm sweeps the island, but the lightning strikes in brilliant colours—purple, green, gold. Where the coloured lightning strikes, strange crystalline formations appear.

Magic Tracker
Graft
Approved here
Theme: The Perfect Specimen
The spark is primarily concerned with wild things, and what traits make one hawk “better” than another. Its first goal is to categorize the ways various living organisms combat their environment, and how these traits pass from one generation to the next. Its second goal is to gather the very best of these traits and turn Jinyel into its idea of a “perfect creature.”Witchmark
A hand splayed over his chest. The palm and undersides of the fingers are all fused to his left pectoral, giving the illusion that someone has reached out of his ribcage, slipped under his skin, and is trying to grasp his heart. This makes it uncomfortable for him to sleep on his front.Mutations
Competent: Lick The ScienceJinyel’s tongue is long, narrow, and prehensile. At full length, it stretches a foot and a half can grab small objects. While it is retracted, a casual observer might think he has a swollen tongue, and his speech is noticeably garbled. It will take at least one cycle for Jinyel to relearn how to speak clearly after reaching competent.
Expert: Taste The Science (Approval)
Jinyel’s eight canine teeth are unnaturally long and sharp. Jinyel’s mouth accommodates them so he doesn’t bite himself, but they are extremely obvious to bystanders unless he wears a mask or keeps his mouth closed. Biting with these teeth will create clean, precise punctures which can be easily closed and healed. They don't provide any combat advantage.
If Jinyel drinks the blood of a creature, he can receive an impression of its enervations as if he had spent minutes laying hands on it. A tablespoon of blood will provide an in-depth map, a teaspoon of blood will provide only basic disruptions like broken bones or dire illness, while a mere lick of blood will only provide basic information like species and age.
If the donor creature is experiencing some ailment ― broken bone, illness, or the like ― Jinyel will experience the pain in his own body until he has 1: fully digested the blood, or 2: used graft to solve the problem in the donor’s body. He cannot use non-magical methods or medicine to remedy the donor, it must be solved with magic or the pain will persist. This doesn’t apply if the donor is already dead before he tastes the blood. If the donor is experiencing some physical pleasure, Jinyel will likewise experience that sensation in his own body, albeit for a much shorter duration unless he expends ether to figure out how it works and how to replicate it in himself or others.
Master: Sweetspike (Approval)
Sometimes a big job requires big magic, and the spark wants to make sure Jinyel is always prepared. When he is well-rested, Jinyel can “store” some of his ether in a spike which grows out of his spine. Though this isn’t a well, and cannot be used for ensorcelling, Jinyel can later “drain” the ether out of the spike to achieve similar effects to flaying a well. He can use it to boost a spell, or to lessen overstepping consequences, and it doesn’t cause addiction the way a well might. After he has drained a spike of ether, its base will scab and then it will fall off. The more ether stored, the larger the spike.
While useful, these spikes have the drawback of being incredibly obvious when Jinyel is shirtless, and also making it difficult to wear shirts. For warmth purposes, his best bet is custom shirts with the holes already made and reinforced, so his spikes don’t tear them to shreds.
Mechanics Note: These spikes MUST be made in-thread, and cannot be assumed. If Jinyel wants to store ether, he must:
- Devote IC time to storing it
- The mechanics of this mutation must be noted in-thread for the grader’s benefit
- After a spike is graded it must be noted on his character sheet with a link to where it was awarded
- Jinyel cannot use any spikes that haven’t been tracked this way. The spike does not exist until it is awarded by a grader.
- Jinyel can only have a maximum of 5 spikes at a time:
- Cervical (neck)
- Thoracic (upper back)
- Lumbar (lower back)
- Sacral (fused)
- Coccygeal (tailbone)
Healing is a common application for graft, and what better way to learn than to heal oneself? The spark wants to be used, but the distraction of pain can delay Jinyel’s self-healing. The spark has decided Jinyel should no longer suffer from pain at all, and so it has been replaced by pleasure.
Though Jinyel still feels a knife as it stabs him, and he is a rational person who knows it is harmful, he now physically experiences pain as pleasure. The more painful an injury would normally be, the the more pleasure he feels from it. This removes some of the panic when it comes to focus-based skills like Meditation or Discipline, but replaces them with a whole new type of distraction. Too much damage can overwhelm him in a much different way.
The flipside, of course, is that this pleasure requires self-destruction. Jinyel is much more comfortable with suffering physical damage, and doesn’t have the same drive to preserve himself. His spark will preserve him, after all. All he has to do is use more magic. This is a particularly dangerous vice for empaths or spirits of addiction to exploit.
This mutation does NOT apply to magical pain or divine pain. Any mages or marked with pain-causing abilities will still be able to use those abilities as normal.
Corruptions
Vestigal Wing Muscles: Suffered hereJinyel suffers another, permanent consequence as a reminder of expending all of his ether in Emea. In his dream, he tried to get rid of his wings, but his spark disagreed with his actions. Vestigial wing muscles have appeared under his skin, and remain even after his skin has healed. This causes his shoulders to be slightly more powerful, but it is also painful, especially when he draws a bow.
Rupturing
Approved here
Persona: Ferocity
This spark was born from an act of capture, and its path to freedom has always been violent. When Jinyel is under any restraint, Ferocity will induce deep claustrophobia until he is free. When Jinyel is peacefully roaming, however, Ferocity is a gregarious spark that happily lets others choose the path.Theme: Free Agent
Ferocity’s primary concern is attaining freedom ― and keeping it at any cost. Ferocity seeks to hone Jinyel into someone who can never be contained.Witchmark
The Rupture Gleam afflicts all Rupturers. When a Rupturer attempts to perceive any distance over 200 feet away from them, their eyes spark with motes of light reminiscent of their Rupture portals.Mutations
Competent: The Spirit of Cooperation All magics can be the key to freedom, and Ferocity is a very cooperative spark. At competence, Jinyel’s “Rupture Gleam” witchmark expands to all sparks. Whenever Jinyel uses magic, his eyes glow with bright light. Rupturing causes his eyes to glow blue, and Graft causes his eyes to glow gold. This is very easy for bystanders to spot, even at a distance, unless Jinyel is physically blindfolded. If an onlooker knows Jinyel personally, they will be able to predict what magic he’s about to use. If Jinyel takes on more sparkmagics, they will each manifest a new color ‘gleam’ as he uses them. This mutation doesn’t apply to sparkless magics.
Expert: Dulcet Roar (Approval)
The spark strives for freedom, and with freedom comes self mastery. No longer do its doorways leave wild screeches in their wake; Ferocity's noise has become something precise and deliberate. Jinyel’s portals remain as loud as any other, but instead of uncontrolled noise it emits clear, musical notes. With practice, Jinyel can control these notes with expertise directly correlated to his Singing skill. At Competent Singing, his portals will sound pleasant, at Expert they will sound beautiful, and so on. By extension, he also has much finer control over his Roar ability; it is still thunderously loud, it still requires the same amount of ether, but he can “sing” with it if he has the skill to do so.

NPC Tracker
Artiga Crowley
Approval: here.
Race: Human/Biqaj
Date of Birth: Cylus 13, 706
Skills:
60 science
30 engineering
30 research
20 writing
10 ensorcelling
10 art
Appearance: Dark hair and dark eyes, soft of feature and sunny of smile.
Personality: Intelligent, curious, and a bit daft when compared to her peers, Artiga is skilled at figuring out the workings of the world and decidedly unskilled at everything else. She will pull apart a mechanism easily; she will miss every unspoken social cue just as easily. Artiga lives for discovery, not for praise, although she does get a bit lonely when so few people seem to genuinely enjoy her company. She often picks the wrong thing to say, or fails to realize the right thing to say, but she does her best, and there is an undeniable cheer to her when she’s on the trail of something truly fascinating.
Relationship to PC: Jinyel saves her from pirates, and the two work together to get to Egilrun. They then become science buddies and penpals.
History: Artiga was born of a human prostitute and one of her many Biqaj clients. A humble beginning, yet a happy one; her mother was abundantly loving and very stern that her daughter would never work the harlot’s trade. Although the girl was a bit… odd in her younger years, what with the taking things apart and putting them back together, she was an undoubtedly clever child. Her mother saved and scraped every nel she could manage, and Artiga was sent to the Viden University satellite campus when she came of age.
A wide-eyed Artiga thrived in the studious establishment, with a thirst for science but a lack of specialization. Unsure of which profession would suit her best, and with perfect grades to prove her trustworthiness, she was permitted to volunteer in various professions around Scalvoris to see where she fit. On the way to Egilrun, to serve in the Almanac, Artiga was captured by pirates looking to delve a fracture in the Golden Cliffs (South) adventure zone. They wanted an ensorceller, and though her knowledge of ensorcellment was theoretical at best, she was first and foremost a scientist. After all, what was ensorcellment but a scientific process, especially if the captain was willing to send his crewmates into the explode-y parts?

Animal Tracker
Current animals in Jinyel's possession are on his CS, this table is used to track posterity of animals that are no longer in his care.
Name: Elraya (no longer in Jinyel's care; mentioned here for posterity)
Species: thairoch
Condition: average condition, basic training
Sex: male
Appearance: a large male thairoch, black body with grey scruff. Unusually muscular shoulders due to having spent several seasons grounded by a wing injury.
Personality: Elraya needs two things: food, and family. Once he has those things, he is content to go anywhere his rider asks. He’s still a bit confused by the concept of being ridden, but rarely makes the conscious choice to disobey unless that rider is trying to take them somewhere stupid. Elraya will not obey anyone he doesn’t consider part of the “family group,” but his family group is easily expanded with a season of regular contact, scratches, and playtime. He is an outgoing animal, always happy to make new friends and try new vegetables. He is befriended especially quickly with cooked vegetables.
History: Adult thairoch of unknown history. Wild, and then injured, until Jinyel found him in Ashan of 725 and doctored him back to health. He then served as Jinyel’s steady (if sometimes confused) mount, until Jinyel was initiated into Rupturing and forcefully relocated to Scalvoris in Vhalar of 725. Since then, Elraya has remained with the Keha'al tribe in the region between Rynmere and the Eternal Empire.

Relationship Tracker
CS: Here.
Voice: young Jeremy Irons-ish
Relationship: Head of the household to which Jinyel is attached; employer(?); mentor(?)
Current Affairs: Cold Cycle 725: Jinyel is grateful to Woe for his shelter and care, and has promised to aid Woe in dispelling the Doom Clock which haunts his dreams. In spite of this, Jinyel retains his aloofness, rarely divulging personal matters unless there is no other choice. Their past encounters have wrought great pain upon him, and he remains highly guarded against any more pain that might find him the same way.
Rebirth Cycle 726: Slightly more relaxed, but still mostly aloof, Jinyel has grown accustomed to the Egilrun house and the people within it. He still rarely initiated conversation, but will participate with good faith in any conversations which are initiatied by Woe. He is also content to sit quietly in the same space as they each work on their own tasks -- Jinyel is beginning to personally connect over crafts and handiwork like knitting, jewelrymaking, and ensorcelling.
Notable Threads
Personality: A fairly young anak that favors fires of celebration. Campfires, bonfires, hearthfires in the middle of a festival -- Littlespark enjoys all of them. It is fond of laughter, music, and the taste of grease as it leaps off cooking food into the flames. Littlespark also loves to be the center of attention, although this is a new concept for it. When it is gorged on both its concept and Jinyel's ephemera, Littlespark often does tricks in the fire to get the attention of guests.
Littlespark can understand spoken language, but responds exclusively in sign language, done through hand-shaped shadows inside its flames.

Re: Template Plot Notes
Scalvoris Plotting
Rupturing initiation, forceful relocation to Scalvoris. Perhaps the mentor, with high deception, casts Jinyel as a criminal in need of capture? Vex's main goal is to bring Jinyel to heel, and then bring Jinyel to Agnis who is back in the EE expansion zone.
Likely: Woe will be in Scalv during the cold cycle, and the emotional nature of a rupturing initiation will surely bring Jinyel to Woe's location. Whether Jinyel actually stays in Woe's location is another story. Too Many Wolves must be completed before the initiation.
Water Evolution
Maybe Jinyel will take to the water using Graft? Mer tribes around Scalvoris are controlled by the Leviathan Sotong. Winston has done lots of RP with the mer around Scalv, Peg is the local mod and authority on Sotong's stuff. A name search in the forums should bring back lots of references.
Mer race lore
Mer hatchery location - Deori
Scaltoth Tribes
Jinyel might also flee to Scaltoth, and perhaps find allyship amongst the tribes there. Or perhaps the monastery? As long as he has somewhere to rest with a watchguard he knows will wake him up if there's trouble.

Re: Template Plot Notes
Alchemy Tracker
In the interest of being silly, here is the initial concept of Jinyel's alchemy, based on his one lesson from Rickith and various experiments:An alchemist's method for transference of properties from medium to medium, from reagent to item, is as varied as their walk of life. While there are alchemists who bend their backs over chemistry equipment, or a cauldron, it's just as possible to find a wild alchemist, engaging in arcane ritual and using the phases of the stars and moons to inform their processes. We encourage creativity when it comes to the method one engages in, and here we will set out to try and set limits around that creative process.
-- Alchemy Wiki Page
Jinyel prefers water as a transferring medium, and then sand mixed with roughly-ground reagents as a "filter" to specify which properties he wants. For instance, if he wants to make clothing dye from iridescent beetles, he would grind up these beetles and mix them with water. The water would then be "filtered" through sand, filled with non-iridescent beetles, to remove the "beetle-ness" and leave only the iridescent property. The resulting water, having recieved the medium, will be combined with whatever clothing item Jinyel wishes to recieve the property.
Due to learning a lot of this through his own experimentation, Jinyel's methods are... unorthodox, and difficult to replicate by others. Due to the fact that alchemy cannot be used on/from living flesh, Jinyel concludes that the best "equipment" is a living tree via grafting wooden bowls onto living branches, to ensure no properties get mixed up in the bowls. Because this is physically changing the tree, his primers and catalysts are not items, but actions -- he "triggers" an alchemical process by pouring soup into the roots of the tree, to "thank" it for the assistance. There is no real magic happening here, the tree does not care or even understand what he is doing, but this is how Jinyel thinks it all works, simply because following these steps is the first time he actually succeeded in transferring a property, and he continues to succeed whenever he pours soup on trees.
He finds it out in the following way:
Alchemy journey
After flying on his thairoch for the first time, Jinyel finds difficulty with wind in his eyes. He decides to use alchemy to create transparent leather, which can be placed over the eyes to protect from wind while also allowing full vision. He decides to use glass as the reagent for transparency, and begins to experiment using his cooking pot.
The first attempt is just him realizing how alchemy actually works. He does manage to confer glass-like properties to a cut of leather, but that property is hardness instead of transparency. He has accidentally created brittle, breakable leather. But he knows generally how alchemy works now.
The second attempt is more deliberate, and he develops his use of a "filter" via ceramic. Using water as a medium, combining it with glass, and filtering it through ceramic, he removes the "hard" property from his experiment. When he finally mixes it into a pot with leather, he does indeed achieve transparence -- of the pot, not the leather. Jinyel now has a see-through iron pot and wet, ordinary leather.
For the third attempt, Jinyel magically grafts wooden bowls to a tree, because living things cannot recieve properties and therefore the tree won't turn invisible. He repeats the same "recipe" of crushed glass mixed with water and "primed" by pouring soup into the tree as thanks. Then the water is filtered through the sand/ceramic, into a final bowl with the leather, and the final process is triggered by the last step: another bowl of soup into the tree and verbally thanking it out loud for helping him with this. Ta-da! Finally successful.
