One of Bedwyr's language classes had expressed concerns about pronouncing the sounds of the draconic alphabet. His students had all gone through the basics sounds when they first started to learning Draconic. Bedwyr was realizing now that he should have spent more time when working on those sounds as it was becoming clear that his students hadn't really taken that practice to heart or speech in this case. He had been finding himself having to correct them more especially as they were learning words with out him telling them or referring to their notes. So it was that he decided that it was time to go back and hoped they would enjoy the activity.
Bedwyr stood in the room with a pile of sheets of paper and a smiled on his face. His blue eyes were more blue with his eagerness to try the activity. He wasn't sure everyone would like, he suspected not, it was a bit silly but it was one of the ways he was helping his own son to learn as he was mastering speech. No one really paid any attention to the pile of cards on Bedwyr's desk as it wasn't uncommon for him to bring papers.
He waited until all of his class had come in. "Morning everyone. Shall we get started." There was a general accent to do so. It was one of the nice things about Saiore's school, people chooses to attend classes because they were interested in the subject, and if they ended up on wanting feeling good with what they have learned and didn't want to take more then they didn't have to. So because of that he didn't have anyone not really interested in being there. Thought he did have those who excelled and those who didn't. Bedwyr was good with either though.
"Alright does anyone remember what we talked about last time." He pointed as someone raised their hands and explained about the last lesson. He smiled at his student and avoided flinching at the interesting pronunciation. It wasn't to bad especially the words they had learned early and repeated a lot but the newer ones were interesting. Bedwyr continued to smile and once the explanation was done he said. "I would like to continue the topic but something has come to my attention." He paused before continuing. "I am sure you have all noticed my accent in common. I try hard not to, but some sounds are difficult for me."
"Your accent isn't that bad." Someone said.
"Thank you, but it is there, and most likely always will be, but I am not butchering." He said and looked around the class. "Unfortunately I have failed a number of you and your accents are very thick. So we are going to work on that and resolve that issue." He pulled us his pile of cards. "So today we are going to work more on correct pronunciation." Bedwyr began going through the basic sounds again. The worked through it in groups and Bedwyr had them practice saying the sounds. In the whole group it sounded correct and this was where Bedwyr had left it the first time and moved on but listening over the past couple of lessons he had realized that each individual had their struggles with individual sounds. Once it was done he smiled at the class. "I would like you all to work with a partner practicing saying the sounds and I will come through and work with you individually."
There was the usual commotion as and pause as people took time to figure out who they wanted to work with and then they quiet mummering as they all began to speak to each other practicing. Bedwyr joined the group closest to him. He sat so he was part of the group and listened as the spoke practicing the sounds. Bedwyr offered help where it was needed and then moved on to the next group offering help where he could. Some people didn't need help others needs a decent amount, most were just a couple of sounds that needed some tweaking. Though Bedwyr realized that some of these would never get it perfect since even himself wasn't getting all the sounds in common exactly right. It would at least allow people understand and be understood. He was happy thought to hear other students helping there fellow student in their effort to pronouncing things correctly.
"All right students." Bedwyr said and picked up the cards. "You are all doing well, and I am very pleased with your progress, but I wanted to work on some more sound activities." He held the cards against his chest and waited until they were all facing him again. He flipped over a card with a word written on it. "Please try to say this word." The class said the word and then he pulled another word cards out. Bedwyr had very intentionally had the cards in a certain order. He wanted to ha ve them practice certain sounds and the variation on that sound in words. Bedwyr and his wife were actually currently using this type of method to help their young son to understand draconic as well, and Bedwyr was doing something similar to help him understand common. Once the first serious of words was finished did one of his students raise their hand.
"What do these words mean?" They seemed confused. "If we are practicing sounds why are we learning new words?"
Bedwyr smiled and nodded and took the first card out. "I am not actually trying to teach you new words so much as practicing saying the sounds it slight different word choice. About half of those words were just nonsense words. The others are important to what we are learning and anyone who really wants to learn them can stay after class and I will go over them. For now we are going to focus on reading and say the sounds." He collected the next set of sound cards and had the class go through those sounds as well. Some of his students had looks that stated they thought this was silly. Others embraced the silly and seemed to have fun with the word game.
The rest of the lesson continued with that activity. “Alright that will be it for the trial. Anyone who would like to get a list of translation for the words in my game that are real words can stay and get that list.” A good chunk of the class stayed but as he finished Bedwyr looked up and saw that there was another Cadouri standing in the corner of the room.
Once the rest of the class had left Bedwyr managed to get a good look at Cadouri. She was a fox Cadouri and was wearing a brown shirt and skirt. As she approached Bedwyr could detect a sent of dirt. The fox smiled which was friendly even with all those sharp teeth. “You must be Bedwyr.” She said as a statement though Bedwyr detected it was still a kind of a question.
“Yes.” Bedwyr said.
“The wings gave you away.” She paused as Bedwyr patted his pile of cards with his tail. “Though I didn’t hear about the tail.”
Bedwyr smiled at her but didn’t say anything sensing that the fox wasn’t trying to be in polite.
“Well I have heard that you like to garden. And we were wondering if you would be willing to teach some novice gardeners who without help are just as likely to destroy the plants they are to care fore.”
Bedwyr fought to keep himself from smiling at the comment. “I would be happy to teach some novices next season.”
“Yes of course no now but next season would be good.” The fox said. She supplied him with some information and then left the building. Bedwyr looked at the paper and then collected his own pile of papers and walked out. He was pleased they had asked him to teach another class. He was always up for teaching draconic but it was a very limited type of topic and after a while the interest would wane as it wasn’t something new anymore. Gardening though was something that he was really wanted to spend his life doing and was doing outside of his lessons. He was looking forward to when he could get his own land to farm.
Teaching a class about it would be interesting and would allow him to do more of what he liked. Still thinking about Bedwyr headed out of the room where he taught and towards his home.
