[Mistral Woods] What's Given, What's Taken

She drove the teeth of the rounded gardening fork into the dirt after she had laboured away at the previous row of potatoes with a shovel. A fork was just a better tool to loosen up the dirt and bring the harvest to light.

Elowen had her sleeves rolled up with sweat running down her back and front as well as it discolouring the edges of her headscarf. But this work needed doing. No one else was going to bring in the season's vegetables.

But at least she wasn't alone.
Pea
kept her company by going through the already disturbed earth, snapping up any unlucky earthworms or bits of root vegetables that Elowen accidentally snapped off with her harvesting methods. The bird, for once, had a varied diet.

The young apothecary leaned on the shaft of the fork and pushed it away from her, forcing the ground to break apart. It was funny how each arc she had forgotten what a tough job this was.

Then she heard
Ark
barking. The pup had taken to laying down nearby to where the girl was, but always in the way of anyone's approach. As though he was positioning himself to be her guardian and the first for anyone to get past if they wanted to interact with the young apothecary. She appreciated it. It made her feels safer when she was alone.

She looked over her shoulder and saw Ark with his ears pricked up and his body at attention but still lying on the ground. So she breathed out, swung the fork once more and left it stuck in the ground. There was no outright danger waiting for her. It was just a regular visitor which oddly enough she came to prefer these days even though it still made her extremely uncomfortable.

After a few more breaths, trying to work out the tension in her back from the work and the task of having to talk to someone, Elowen moved towards the front of the shack. Ark was standing already. Whoever was coming, got too close perhaps. Pea, on the other hand, was happily feasting still.

"Hello?" An uncertain voice came from around the corner.

A trill later, the young apothecary came into view, laying a hand on the pup. The visitor, a middle-aged woman who rarely needed Elowen's help, seemed to startle.

"Sorry. I didn't...expect you there..." The woman said with an uncertain smile flitting across her lips.

Elowen's face, always the mirror to most of her emotions, frowned as she looked just to the right of the woman. Odd...but then, there was nothing giving away where she had been and it was near impossible to see around the corner. So she brushed it off, laying no notice to the liquid shadow clinging to the corner of the shack. No one looked at it.

Then it was the woman's turn to frown since Elowen said nothing. She was the quiet sort and she also didn't need to ask people why they came. She knew it. So she stood there, waiting for the woman to speak, clearly not helping the overall strange atmosphere that had settled over them. The woman stole a few glances at Elowen.

"I need something for my nose. It's blocked."

The girl nodded, then looked down at Ark and stroked him a little. Just a cold then...

The shadow detached from its spot and moved closer to the girl.

"Can you...help?"

This time it was Elowen who seemed to startle. What was she waiting for?

"Yes. Of course, I can. Come," the girl said.

In the world that underlaid theirs, the thick shadow that no one saw, grabbed onto her ankle as Elowen crossed the short distance into the shack. It began climbing up her leg whilst the girl struggled to shake off that strange feeling of things not being quite right.

Re: [Mistral Woods] What's Given, What's Taken

They walked into the shack where there was no fire burning and the scents that were locked inside wafted out and enveloped the two women.

Elowen paid no attention to it. It was all normal to her. But the woman that followed her stopped and hesitated. Casting a quick look towards the young apothecary before surveying the inside of her humble abode for...who knew what?

The girl set out to do her job without saying a word. She had never been expected to make conversation, nor was she particularly skilled at it. Without such obligations, she could work efficiently, gathering her supplies from the shelves.

But then her fingers lingered. For some reason...she couldn't quite…

It was like for a moment she was looking at the jars and the secrets they held, that she knew better than anyone, they hid even from her. And if she could have felt the world underneath, she would have known that the black shadow had climbed up to her face and was now moving over her eyes.

But as soon as it moved beyond the girl's forehead and to the top of her head, Elowen knew that her fingers were about to reach for Tree Heat. A herb that would certainly not help the woman.

Frowning, Elowen quickly gathered the herbs she actually needed, trying not to wonder too much why she nearly made such a basic mistake.

"Everything ok?" The woman asked. She had probably seen the moment where the girl's fingers lingered before they reached for a different jar further down the row. Not privy to the girl's thoughts, such change of heart could have meant anything.

But the young apothecary was not accustomed to question like these. She paused and looked towards the woman from the corner of her eye. Her expression was otherwise unmoving before she gave a short nod and went about her work. The shadow was now spreading across her scarf from the crown of her head as though it was trying to get the best hold possible.

The silence stretched for a trill or two before the woman spoke again. "I left you something in the basket."

This gave the girl a stop and the focus that took over her face, shifted into one of mild confusion. But then she carried on in her work regardless, letting the other stew in her own statement.

"Most of us do, actually...You know...since...you can speak with the spirits...maybe you can put in a good word for me...us! Us. Can you put in a good word for the village before the snow comes? This arc might not be as kind with harvests it seems."

The girl was frowning as she laid down her tools. "Spirits speak only to a few select ones," she said. And she was certainly not one of them but failed to add that information since her focus was on the remedy receptor as she decanted the mixture, trying not to spill it.

The woman nodded eagerly as though Elowen just confirmed something to her. The shadow on Elowen's head bellowed like a wave brought up from a peaceful sea.

The young apothecary secured the container with a lid and passed it to the woman. "You know what to do," Elowen said, assuming that was the case since this was as common as her help got. But when the woman stood in place, unmoving, the fifteen-arc-old pressed her lips together. By this point, thanks would be given along with payment and visitors would be on their merry way.

Something odd was going on here. Odder than usual. She could now feel as much that her task was done. So she added to her previous statement, hoping that was the correct closing line. "Whenever your nose is too bad, put a spoon of this in a pot of boiling water, then inhale the steam."

The woman inhaled and nodded. "I will. Thank you." Still she did not move. The girl chanced a quick look at the woman's face and saw hesitation on it. She seemed to be taking small breaths like someone about to add something. But then the villager just shook her head, turned and made her escape.

The shadow, as though trying to secure a better vantage point shifted. One of this prolonged appendages reached around the girl's face, covering one of her eyes. In that moment, Elowen experienced a strange sense of deja vu as though she had lived in that moment once before. As though she had seen an older woman rushing away from her in that same way.

She frowned and shook her head also, recalling what the woman said. Spirits and baskets. What in Rharne is going on here? And she looked towards the path where the villager had disappeared on her way to the Mistral Village. The wicker tray was still there as it had been for many trials now. Had no one come to collect it yet?

Re: [Mistral Woods] What's Given, What's Taken

She was standing above the wicker tray. It wasn't the plants she was looking at. Although she was feeling awful since they had been exposed to the elements. And that was not correct way to store plants, especially some of the more exotic looking ones.

No. She was not looking at them. She was looking at a
knife
in its black and bronzed scabbard. Did the woman really say that others have been leaving gifts for her? Elowen? Why?

Then she recalled the mention of spirits and the conversation she had overheard in the forest a few trials prior. Had the villagers lost their marbles? Was there another mind altering sickness making the rounds? The girl could not think of any other explanation for this rare turn of events.

She dropped into a crouch and reached for the knife. She hesitated for a moment before lifting it up. She was no expert in weapons, but she could tell this was no cheap work. It was too fine to just be left behind by anyone.

Still she lifted her head and looked around, expecting the owner of this item, and the basket, to come to view any moment and claim what they left behind.

But no one was coming.

She looked back into her hands, grabbed the handle and the blade cover. Then she pulled in opposite directions.

The girl took in a breath.

It was a harvesting knife. A much better one than what she had in her arsenal.

She surveyed her surroundings again. Why was she feeling like a thief though she had not even taken anything? Like she was doing something forbidden?

It was an overwhelming sensation that mad her to sheath the knife and place it back in the tray. Then she stood up in one quick motion. So quick, that she got stars in her eyes and had to feel around for support for a trill or two.

Could she leave the basket out here though? The plants had already suffered? And the...knife?

When her vision cleared, she was staring into the wicker basket again. She knew some of the herbs there very well. Some she did not know at all. And though she did not understand people for the most part, she couldn't quite reconcile the idea that someone would leave such things, unusual herbs and a fine harvesting knife behind without coming back for it.

Elowen looked up the path that led to the village. She looked into the Mistral ahead of her and behind her. There was no one but her and the presence of countless trees bearing witness when she made her decision.

She bent down and scooped up all the contents of the tray before carrying them back into the shack. The herbs needed a better place to stay dry to retain their properties and the knife she would guard until the rightful owner came to claim it.

That way, she was not a thief. Just a herbalist trying to do the right thing. Right?

Feedback

Ooo the confusion begins. I do hope the spirit's antics don't lead to any serious missteps or accidents with the identification of herbs. Would be a shame to let a infusion of ginger tea have a few ground up petals of nightshade in them!

The npc that visited Elowen was well written as was Elowen herself. I enjoyed the exchange, and the struggle of the girl against the spirit of intrigue.

I do wonder how she'll manage to tame this spirit if at all, or at least live with it!

I like the knife she got too!

Good writing!
