Appearance

Darragh is a young woman, looking much like a seedling forgotten in the dark: tall, slouching slightly, and slightly too pale. Her expression is normally a curious one, with large, black eyes that seem to stare at (and often through) anyone and anything that catches her attention. When immersed in her passions, she positively glows, although her habit of never meeting people's eyes tends to leave some unsettled. She has an upturned nose and a couple of pimples, plus whatever dust, scratches and bruises she's gleefuly claimed in her most recent travels.

Her frame is thin and lanky. She tends to wear boyish or gender-neutral clothing or accessories, such as tops with a loose fit, and favors greens and earth tones for their versatility both in and out of cities. Her favorite color is blue, however, and this can be seen in the few items of Biqaj jewelry she may wear. The beads, made of items she'd gathered over the years, from sea sponges to pieces of laquered wood to glass, are interspersed by pieces of wool or cloth in order to avoid them clinking. Her whimsy shines subtly though her otherwise worn clothing, for example the way that a tear might be repaired with a vine-like embroidery stitch.

She will gesture reflexively, and this, combined with her lack of eye contact, sometimes makes her look like a marionette on strings.

Personality

If one had to define Darragh in one word, it would be 'wanderlust'. The travelling painter is always yearning for the horizon. She finds joy in simple things, such as gleaming raindrops or fresh flower buds, especially things that she can paint. She may spend a break mesmerized by a single leaf, and her remarkable focus is as much a strength as it is a curse. Her goal is to share beautiful landscapes with everyone, and travel across Idalos.

When interracting with other people, the young woman comes off as somewhat standoffish. Part of it is her nature, but the fact that she is relatively new to the life and difficulties of a solitary traveller also plays a role. She isn't very good at reading people. In addition, Darragh carries come confusion and guilt over her identity and place in the world, not helped by the fact that she identified as Biqaj for most of her life. She values the freedom to go where she pleases, but unlike many from her culture, is comfortable with inland areas. Unlike many, she is bad at making deals. Worst of all, the fact that she chose to make a living by sharing and selling her paintings has pushed her further away from her culture. To many Biqaj, what she is doing could be considered equivalent to walking the streets naked, a prostitution of the soul. Art is a private thing.

Still, for the most part she keeps her spirits up, and is often eager to help others, perhaps unusually so.

History

Darragh was adopted as a toddler by a family of outcast Biqaj. Her mother was the captain, stern but fair, ruling over the infamous ship called 'The Paper Boat'. Some would know this as a ship of rumours, the color of fog and just as elusive, carved out of sugar-maple and witchwood. Her father was the main Navigator, with his eyes often stuck to the skies. Although occasionally a pirate ship, their home could best be described as the lair of a crew of phantom thieves, who would steal precious items from a port or another, and then dissapear without a trace. Darragh was loved and cared for, not only by her parents but also by a couple unrelated aunties and uncles in the crew. While the group included many non-Biqaj and, indeed, several humans, it is only in her late teens that Darragh discovered her lack of blood connection with her parents.

You see, for years she suspected that her father might not have been her father, but rather one of the many other lovers that her mother ethically took (at least, one of the male ones). When the girl finally gathered the courage to confront her parents, she found out that the one she knew as her mother hadn't birthed her either. They spoke of how they loved her, of the traits that endeared her to them, like her unquenchable curiosity, her kindness, but Darragh felt even more confused with her place in the world.

By then, she was in the midst of her brooding teenage rebellion. She loved the ship and her family, but something was missing. She was too bad a liar to be a thief, too soft-spoken to succeed her mother as a captain, and no matter how much she stared at the waves, none of her father's natural affinity for currents and weather seemed to rub off on her. She was curious about the plants and sights beyond the shore, but repressed it due to the wish to fit in. What she did instead was paint, paint every free moment she had, very often painting late into the night in order to be able to sneak onto the deck with her drawing block and paint the waves without having anybody send her to her room. She wished she could have shared the images she captured with more people. In this obsession she poured all her anxiety and uneasiness, all her happiness and wonder.

After the sleep deprivation resulted in a few minor injuries when climbing the ratlines, Darragh took time to heal and think. She feared what she had to do. If she left, she realized, she might never meet her family again, due to the risky and hidden nature of their craft. Yet, in tears, she asked to leave. Perhaps in order to grow, she would need to experience other places. Perhaps her path was a different one.

On a dark misty night, the Paper Boat left her on the shores of Scalvoris. She's explored the island ever since, travelling between the wilderness and cities, peddling her creations when she can, but mostly foraging or doing odd jobs in order to survive and keep travelling.
