The Grand Fracture of Luesco
The Castle in the Clouds
High above the night's sky over Viden shines a beautiful aurora yvalis: a fascinating blend of multitudinous colours that gleam among the starlight. Artists and craftsmen in the city below have looked up at this aurora for countless years and felt the stirring of inspiration within their souls, as if the light causes the seeds of creativity within them to grow and flourish. Aurora yvalis has been regard as a muse by the people of Viden since the founding of the city, some even claiming that it is one of the main reasons why Viden's scientists have been able to develop technology years ahead of the rest of the world. Yet despite their research these scientists still haven't discovered a creature or contraption capable of flying high enough up into the sky to reach the aurora any study it, so very few people are aware of what aurora yvalis really is. Certainly none of them believe the stories told by children every now and then about the castle they claimed they say up in the sky.
Yet there is more truth to these rumours than most would think, for aurora yvalis was created by the shattering of the original Luesco. When Luesco felt the shattering coming he flew high up into the sky, desperate to minimise the damage the event would have on the world he came to love. His fracture causes the light passing through his patch of sky to bend out of shape; refracting it at odd angles and dying it both with strange colours and with echoes of the innovative ideas that once flew around in his head. Usually this fracture is really nothing more than that, an empty stretch of sky where the light behaves strangely, but every day at dawn this changes.
When the light of the morning sun begins to peak over the horizon the light it emits is refracted at just the right angle to pierce straight through the heart of the fracture, triggering an incredible reaction. Luesco was a being of boundless creativity, and as the light passes through the fracture's heart it projects holographic images of each and every idea for a creation that he dreamt up but never got around to making. Mirages of great machines and beautiful artworks thousands of years more advanced than anything the mortals of Idalos have ever seen float throughout the sky, an illusionary portfolio into the inner workings of the mind of the greatest craftsman Idalos has ever known. And the largest of all these mirages is the design for a great castle Luesco had planned to build for his shay worshippers where they could live in peace and comfort. Thus, for no more than half an hour each morning, this castle in the clouds appears around the heart of the fracture, as if daring those who live below it to create a way to reach it and discover the world-changing treasure trove of inventions inside. While the mirage of the castle is present the power of Luesco's fracture imbues this mirages with the properties of a real creation, allowing those few who can survive so high in the sky to walk around the castle of light as if it were real and touch the things inside. Yet the moment the sun has completely come out from the horizon the castle quickly begins to fade again, dropping anything real that is still inside
Luesco's fracture is strangely gentle and welcoming, filling those who visit with the excitement of inspiration, and is not in itself hostile. The challenge of this fracture lies in reaching it, up so high in the sky that the air is too thin for the wings of any known creature to carry it. It is bitterly cold and difficult to breathe up there, and one little mistake can lead to a fall so long that you'd be dead before you even hit the ground. And even if one ever was to reach the castle, the titan that guards it doesn't take too kindly to intruders.

Knowledge of this fracture's existence is incredibly rare. Your character must have earned a specific knowledge about its existence in a thread to know that it is real and that it is a grand fracture, however any character may have heard the legend of the castle in the clouds, so long as they do not know that it is actually real. This knowledge can be gained by talking to an Immortal, studying The Originals, or even just deciding to did deeper into the myths surrounding it and discovering some interesting facts.
Notes
- The five children of Luesco: Aeva, Daia, Ethelynda, Karem and Ymiden, all know where Luesco's fracture is, and might be willing to share this secret with mortals they are sure would not use the technology within for evil, but would never actually take a mortal there themselves unless it was absolutely unavoidable. Luesco loved to develop solutions to problems, proclaiming it as the core of being an inventor, and would have only wanted mortals who felt this same joy to witness this designs.
- Ymiden, being the Immortal of Dawn, makes the castle appear whenever he enters the fracture simply by being there.
