War Arrives: Forging Away

16 Cylus 720 | Mathias Blackwood | Storm's Edge
There had been many rough trials for the last knights of Storm's Edge but there were harder trials to come. The sore Mathias had resigned himself to more construction efforts totrial with the hope that it would help him stay out of combat. He'd spent more than his share of time patrolling the walls and had finally found something he thought he would be good at. However it became evident, fairly early on, that Mathias did not know the skills necessary to run the forge. Fortunately he didn't need to. There were plenty of other workers around the forge with adequate knowledge to keep it churning out new swords and shields from the raw metal that had come in with the various supply runs.

Mathias was given the jobs that he could perform without getting into the way of others. At first it was sweeping, so he swept well. Mathias weaved in and out of various workstations with his broom, reaching in to drag the dust and dirt and debris away from the workers and into a neat pile. Naturally the busy workers around the forge paid nearly no mind to him- they were all far too occupied with their craft, and so they occasionally kicked over his pile of dirt and debris, forcing Mathias to bring it together again with another dozen or so sweeps. He spent about a full break sweeping before growing so incredibly irritated at the number of other volunteers trampling his dirt piles that he demanded a new job. He was put in charge of the bellows.

As it was described to him, his job was to keep the forge's coals at a nice light orange color and he was to ensure the flames did not reach above a certain height. He thought he could manage it easily and so the first thing he did when it came time to use the bellows was that he gave it a full pump and the flames raged higher than he'd been told to allow them. There was a moment a panic, a dozen or so stern looks, and then everything returned to normal. The next time Mathias pumped the bellows, he did it more gently and the coals responded more kindly. He continued doing this for some time, while watching the rest of the people moving about the forge to try and learn their craft from osmosis.

ennadiya had received a call that someone needed medical attention in the Armory. The young woman walked down the halls with a steady pace that was neither rushed nor casual. Even in this time of war the young healer moved a grace that drew the eye with appreciation. Her booted feet made a stead soft clinking sound as she progressed down the hall even as the skirts of her skirts swooshed around her legs that both hide and emphasized a well-built form. At this time of war she stuck to her more sober browns and tans. Her hair was also less extravagant then it would traditionally have been and instead of waves and complicated braids today it was in two simple brads on either side of her head. It almost gave her a girlish sort of look.

Once she entered the Armory there was a pause in the work as the blacksmiths and others paused to admire the newest arrival. Her platinum blond hair seemed to almost glow in the forge light. Her blue robe/cloak clearly marked her as a healer and a member of the Order of Andunih so there wasn’t really any questions as to why she was there. Gennadiya stood there confident looking around trying to find her patient. She hadn’t ever worked in a forge but had many patients who did, and her father was a jeweler and so he had a smaller version of this room at his shop and so she felt comfortable.

Gennadiya began to move into the room as she saw the head blacksmith walk up to her. She smiled at the older man as he stopped and then spoke to her in that blunt way all blacksmiths seem to share. “Greg over there has burned himself again.” He said in exasperation. “Can you treat the injury, but leave a bit of the pain to help him understand the importance of being careful. Nothing against you but your visits don’t exactly help our productivity.” Gennadiya laughed out loud at that comment. The young woman walked over to were Greg was trying to work. He paused and gave her a sheepish grin. Genna looked over the arm and frankly though the guy was doomed in he was worried about this small but and planned to work here. She didn’t say anything but bandaged it up.

As she finished but before she left she noticed Matthias working on the bellows. Genna walked over and handed him a flask of water. “Drink before you over heat.” She said quietly. “Manning the bellows can be fairly hot work.” She was smiling. “I didn’t know you knew blacksmithing.”

It was hard not to notice Gennadiya's entry into the room. Everyone had been so focused on their work that when one of the worker screamed in pain most of them shrugged it off and kept at what they were doing. Mathias, for his part, kept the fire burning hot with the bellows after Greg had burned himself on a hot sword again. Yet when Gennadiya came in everything else seemed to stop. The banging of hammers molding hot iron came to a halt. The workers turned and watched the platinum blonde as she spoke to the head blacksmith. Mathias stopped too but not for as long as the others. When he saw Gennadiya a small smile crept over his face and then he went back to working on the bellows. She was here to work, so was he, if she wanted to talk, she'd come to him... and she did... and she brought a drink!

"In fairness, I don't, I'm just trying not to screw anything up too badly." Mathias admit to Gennadiya as he took the flask she offered him. He took a quick swig and was both glad and somewhat disappointed to find it was water. "Water? Gross." Then again what else should he have expected? A healer trying to get him drunk in the forge? Mathias wasn't sure whether or not he would mind that. "I'm kidding, thank you." He said before offering the flask back to the healer. "Funny seeing you here, again. I guess it's a small ruin after all. How have you been?" Mathias asked as he gave the fire another little blast from the bellows. The flames rose a little high again and the smith shifting a crudely molded sword with tongs gave Mathias a stink eye that he didn't notice because he was looking at Gennadiya.

he young woman studied the man who she had just handed the water to. His hair was brown and shaggy with the same shad facial fuzz. His hair wasn’t very well kept, but Genna had always accepted the fact that not many people, especially men, took as much pleasure as she did in combing and doing something with her hair. She did resist the urge to reach out and brush a few strands into something more orderly. Besides the obvious invasion of the personal space of someone she barely knew there was also the fact that the heat of forge and the sweat it produced would soon make every man in the room hair completely drenched.

The sapphire blue eyes studied more than just the man’s hair. His face was young and handsome, and stood only a couple inches taller than Gennadiya herself. There was something in his gaze though that spoke of a barrier that he had placed in an effort to protect himself. The young woman wondered briefly about it but didn’t dwell too much on it. Genna laughed at Matthias comment about trying to stay out of the way and then more at his reaction to the water.

“My flask would never make it out of the room if I carried something stronger then water.” She said with a smile and chuckle. She didn’t mention that she would most likely be the consumer. Genna hadn’t actually consumed alcohol in years, not since her recovery from drugs after her sister’s death, so she wasn’t sure how well she could resist it, but she wasn’t about to test her resolve. As proof of that she did actually have alcohol in her bag, but it was a small case for cleaning wounds and not consumption. “It is good of you to help.” She did noticed the irritated look of the actual blacksmith but said nothing as she realized that this handsome young man was very focused on her. “Did you want to learn smithing or just wanted to do a help keep the soldiers armed?”

As he observed about running into her here Genna smiled and shrugged which caused her hair to sway around her pretty face. “I have always been terrible at expecting others to come to me at the clinic. I prefer to get out of the clinic and go around helping people.” She looked around the room and then back at Matthias, “So I volunteer whenever there is a call to heal someone. I find that I can understand my patients better that way, and they trust me more.”

Mathias chuckled with Gennadiya when she stated that if she'd brought anything stronger than water the flask would never have made it out of the room. She wasn't wrong about that. Unlike Gennadiya, Mathias found some comfort in a bottle. It made the things he'd done, and the things he expected he would have to do, easier to live with... but it was also fun. A sort of fun Mathias couldn't seem to find doing anything else but shooting arrows and after some time you couldn't pull back the bowstring... but you could always lift another glass. Mathias shrugged when Gennadiya said that it was good of him to help because he didn't feel that he was really contributing much. She was doing far more to aid the blacksmiths by helping tend to their injuries than Mathias felt he was doing by manning the bellows and observing the work of the blacksmiths closely.

Then she inquired about if he meant to learn the trade. Mathias would have shrugged again had he not been aware of how recently he had shrugged so he instead replied saying "Well I came to help keep soldiers armed but I won't be mad if I learn smithing while doing that." There was more to it then that, a curiosity that probed at Mathias because of his magic, but he didn't mention it. He'd taken the pieces of a broken sword from the last time the two of them met in the room they were in now and meant to reforge it into a sword he could keep... after a trill of thought he decided that wasn't some grand secret he needed to keep from Gennadiya. "And I still have those broken sword pieces so I'm kinda hoping to learn how to reforge it." There would be little point in transmuting qualities onto half a sword.

When the conversation turned to Gennadiya and the clinic Mathias turned his body to face her a little more and the bellows a little less. When she shrugged it drew more of Mathias's attention to Gennadiya's hair than he thought it would. This wasn't the first time he'd seen her and her often tied up hair, but there was something about the way the glow of the forge shined against her skin that was... captivating to Mathias. So when Gennadiya finished speaking about the clinic, the first words out of Mathias's mouth had nothing to do with what she'd said. "Do you always wear your hair in braids? Don't get me wrong, it looks nice but I don't think I've seen you with your hair down." Realizing what he'd said aloud a trill after he said it, Mathias tried to quickly pivot "Sorry, the clinic-" He backed up in his mind to try and remember what she'd said. "It's good of you to get out and help people. With more people like you we might not have to worry about the flameborn at all."

he healer found that she enjoyed talking to Matthias, he seemed genuinely interested in her and what she had to say. Genna could tell that there was a certain amount of skepticism in him, but she was fine with that actually. Many of the men she talked to fell into one of three categories, either they didn’t really hear a word she said because they were too busy staring. They were shy and intimidated by her and didn’t really interact or open up despite her attempts to bring them out. The last group was those who were coworkers or married. Well they could be great friends, but the first group well she felt the same way about them, and with the second group she always made sure they came as a package deal.

So it was nice to have someone who wanted to get to know her and was free for her to get to know. He seemed to have an internal debate about weather or not to tell her about his interest in forging. Eventually he opened up about his desire to learn to reforge the sword he had picked up earlier. Genna blinked in surprise but smiled with pleasure. “Making your own sword sounds like a wonderful idea.” She said honestly though she felt like something her father said was echoing in the back of her mind. “That way it is even more a part of you, and something you made. I hope that you get the chance to reforge that sword, and possible make more.” Genna was beginning to feel a bit guilty about distracting Matthias from his job, but something in her wanted to keep talking.

It was then that he asked her about her hair. Genna was surprised at it certainly wasn’t on the standard list guys asked her, though the question pleased her as it was a honest question that he was curious about. Genna resisted the urge to touch her hair, but her smiled grew pleased at the question and she answered it. “I do wear my hair down, though I usually have some type of braid work going on. I like doing my hair in the morning. It is relaxing and I almost find myself meditating when doing it. It also reminds me of my sister and mother.” She paused and continued. “Though her at Storm Edge I tend to keep it braid for more practical reasons. When it is in a braid it stays out of the way, weather that is in surgery or in a fight.”

Genna loved how he quickly went back to the healing subject. She was still smiling and then tilted her head and gave the man before her a look that said she was going to be mischievous. Then she turned and called out to the head blacksmith. He grunted and made his way over. Genna glanced at Matthias and said. “Let’s see if we can’t help you reach one of your goals.” When the man came over Genna spoke up.

“Matthias here would be interested in learning some blacksmithing.” She said honestly. “We were wondering if maybe he could get a few lessons besides his normal volunteered time.” He looked at Genna who was giving him a friendly but serious look. She was honest about her request, but there wasn’t any expectation in her look that he would have to do what she asked. The master blacksmith looked over at Matthias.

“Well I can use the help on the iron.” He said looking at Matthias. “I can teach you some basics if your willing to put the efforts in.” The way he said this last line implied effort might be an understatement. Genna watched to see what Matthias would say, but her eyes were encouraging him on.

Mathias was glad Gennadiya didn't mock him for his hoarding of broken bits. The last volunteer he'd told of his intention had asked him why he didn't just forge a new one from an ingot of some stronger metal. It wasn't the same as reforging. Mathias's transmutation spark had shown him the history of the broken blade and he sought to defy natures intent by giving the sword more use... but he had to repair it and learn to use it first. Then Gennadiya explained that she found braiding her hair in the morning to be somewhat meditative and Mathias nodded to her. He'd never put much stock in mediation but as a mage with a spark that might slowly drive him insane he probably should have. Rather than embarrass himself with further inquiries or comments about her hair, Mathias let the topic sit with a simple nod to Gennadiya after she'd explained.

Then she tilted her head.

Mathias would have recognized that head tilt anywhere. The byproduct of of a mischievous thought formulating behind the eyes. He recognized it because it was a look that both he and Sylvia often had before they acted on such a thought... but the question remained; what was Gennadiya thinking about? Gennadiya called for the head blacksmith and before Mathias could process what was going on the blacksmith came over. "Wait, don't bother-" But it was too late, the blacksmith was there and Gennadiya was speaking to him. The blacksmith made his offer and Mathis nodded to him. "I've got nothing else to do." He said to the blacksmith who'd requested he put the effort in. Then the blacksmith gestured for Mathias to follow him and turned away without many more words exchanged.

There was a little sadness in Mathias's eyes when he looked back at Gennadiya. No anger or anything like that. Just a little sadness as he came to realize this meant they'd have to stop talking for the time being. He enjoyed talking to her- he might have even preferred to abandon the forge to go speak with her some more, but now duty called. "I guess I have to go help him now. Thank you." Mathias wasn't quite ecstatic about the work waiting for him, but Gennadiya had been trying to do him a favor. "I'll see you around?"

atthias was surprised by Genna’s action that much was clear by his expression. The young woman had always liked helping people and she had guessed from Matthias behavior that he was hoping to pick up information, but didn’t want to approach and inconvenience the blacksmith. The Lysorian woman had meet people like that, she herself didn’t understand the hesitation. All the person could say is no, and then you either see if you can change their mind or see if someone else will help. Either way she wanted Matthias to have the chance to learn the blacksmithing.

She did see his look he gave her as the prepared to separate. Genna knew that he didn’t want to stop talking with her, and she wouldn’t mind continuing the conversation but she could tell from the looks she was getting and knowing her own rounds that it was time for her to be going. She smiled at Matthias and put her hand on his arm. “It has been nice talking with you. I will be taking dinner in about five breaks if you are available then.”

Genna didn’t wait for an answer and turned to leave. Her movements were as graceful as when she came in to the black smith but she did look back once before leaving. Genna found Matthias interesting and intriguing. She could tell while he was friendly there was something there that he wasn’t sharing or opening up about. The blue eyes woman wouldn’t push but was interesting in learning more about the young handsome archer.

Experience: 15 no magic

Knowledge: Smithing x 4, Socialization x 3, Discipline x 2

Renown: none

Skill Usage: I thought when Mathias recognized a look that Gennadiya gave him, and then came to a conclusion based on that, it was a bit of an overplay of his psychology skill. It could be played as detection coming through, but be careful about how accurate Mathias' interpretation of what he sees is.

Loot/Losses: A broken steel sword.

Injuries/Conditions: none

Consequences: none

Gennadiya

Experience: 15 no magic

Knowledge: Medicine x 2, Psychology x 2, Seduction x 3, Socialization x 2

Renown: 5 for helping men at the forge.

Skill Usage: I feel you're overplaying your skill at seduction/cosmetology just a tad in general. It's not quite enough here to hand down consequences, but if you want Gennadiya to be good at those skills, turning npc heads, and doing her own hair to perfection, you'll want more xp in seduction and cosmetology respectively. Or you may find the attention of others backfiring, possibly even having her hair fall out of place rather often.

It's perfectly okay what happened between these two pcs though. PCs are 100% allowed to like each other if they wish. It's just the NPC reaction I'm concerned about.

Loot/Losses: none

Injuries/Conditions: All the dry heat of the forge, coupled with the long days and nights of being a healer in the war front, have taken their toll on Gennadiya's hair in the form of split ends. She'll want to touch up her hair if she doesn't want it to get worse. (an opportunity for a cosmetology thread, maybe if you like, or else you can presume she got it taken care of through her medical skill.)

Consequences: none
Comments: This was a fun and flirty little collaboration. As I stated in your individual evaluations, you're on the verge of overplaying some of your skills, but it's nothing serious enough for consequences, and here the character interaction overshadowed much of the action, which was great!

It's nice that these young people on the war front are still finding time to flirt and possibly find a love interest. Gennadiya is quite adorable and considerate of the workers, while Mathias is down to earth if somewhat headstrong.

Good work guys, enjoy the points and lores.
