Anchor's Ring

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Seeing Around the Next Cloud

Bedwyr wandered in his exploration of island and as he expected eventually found his way to the anchor ring. The island was familiar but parts of it had changed a lot. He remembered this spot where they had come together when the islands had united. He paused his gaze looking around as his skinned shifted more red with his curiosity. He looked at it from a distant taking in and observing the place. It was about the size of a wagon wheel, so comfortable for one person to be in though possible for two or three people to stand on if they were okay being close. His tail twitched as he looked at it more. It was composed of a smooth stone surface but had a ring of blue and gold flowers. He wondered why the blue and gold color for the flowers. He watched as the seemed to pulse with a rhythm. It was subtle right now but he did notice it as he watched them.

Bedwyr approached the location and actually knelt first to investigate the flowers. He was wondering if he recognized the type of flower or flowers that surrounded the stone. To some the flowers might seem like nothing but to him each plant was a marvel and a mystery waiting to be explored. He carefully studied the flowers as he sat on the ground next to them pulsing flowers. He began to look at the different parts of the flowers in his efforts to identify them. One of the biggest things he was curious about was if the flowers would produce seeds. He wanted to collect some seeds and try to plant them in other spots and see if they would behave the same in a different spot. Assuming he could collect seeds he would very carefully collect and store them for planting later. As he was on the ground saw a couple small stones that were of a bluish huge with streaks of gold and violet running through the rocks. Bedwyr picked them up thinking that they were particularly nice looking and would be a good size for him to give to Ieuan.

Having crawled around on his hands and knees to look at the flowers that edge the stone his hands and the knees of his pants were dusty from the dirt but that really didn’t bother the hyludin man. After crawling around to see if the flowers were all the same Bedwyr stood up and looked at the stone in the center of the circle. He slowly walked into the circle. When he stood in the circle he pulled out Chamy the shell he had picked up at the first visit as a good luck charm. He held it loosely in his hand as he focused upon the effect he experienced in the circle.

He could sense through the stone the beating pulse of the island as well as see it through the flowers response. It helped him become aware of his own pulse as the two weren’t in sink. It was like listening to music where the instruments aren’t playing together. He actually sat down at that point and focused upon the two beats. It wasn’t right away but also didn’t take long before the music of the two beat began to line up. The most uncomfortable was when the two beats were almost lined up but no exactly on. It created an odd uncomfortable sense but after a few more beats the two feel in sink with each other.

Bedwyr hadn’t particularly anxious or at least conscientious anxious, but as he sat there listening to the beat he felt himself growing calmer and could feel his unconscious anxiety begin to slip away and felt himself calming even more. He sat there listening to beat. It was a funny contradiction. The beat was as stead as any clock and kept time in its way, but it was so steady that would be easy to get distracted and loss track of time. There was something else it reminded him of and to his minds eye he remembered a face he hadn’t seen clearing in a very long time.

His mother face came back to him. It was when he was a child shortly before his parents death when he had been cuddling up with his mother and could hear the steady beat of her heart. He was looking up at her as she looked forward. Bedwyr tried to remember why and discovered that part of the memory came back to him. His father was sitting on the other side of the room telling them stories like he would. His mother was watching her husband, Bedwyr’s father as he spoke. Bedwyr remembered feeling so safe, and so loved as he sat there. It was a memory that he had drawn upon for arc after their death. In time the memory had faded. Thoughts of his own wife had come to replace it as he thought of comforting things. Now the memory was back as if he was living it again. He could also remember his siblings some cuddled on his mother’s other side some gathered around there father. He had always assumed they were there but the memory of them had always been fuzzy.

Bedwyr didn’t push the memory just sat it in as the beating continued, he felt a tear begin to trace it’s way down his cheek. He still felt a strange calm and wondered if it was an effect of the Anchor Ring that was allowing to pull up that memory or if he wasn’t really pulling up a memory. Either way he didn’t rush and just enjoyed.

After bit he realized that he had lost track of time and that the beats had become to soothing. Bedwyr pulled his focus away from the rhythm and the calming effect. He opened his eyes and could still feel the damp trail from the tears but still told him it had been a bit of time sitting on the stone. Instead he pulled his attention away and instead pulled out Chammy and put him on the stone in front of him and focused upon the shell.

As he stared at it he thought he hear a voice say to him. “Do you remember how we meet?” And as if unbidden the memory of first time he picked up the shell came back to him and he remembered how it had been good luck for him through the discovery of the island. The memory didn’t hold him the way the other one had so he was brought back shortly from all that he had seen.

He started at the Chammy. Since he had landed on the island this time he had felt Chammy becoming more and more alive as he had explored. He looked at and said.

“Are you alive?”

There was a pause and Bedwyr felt like it was an intentional pause and then he swore he could hear a responses. ‘Not yet.’ It paused ‘I think’

Bedwyr heard the response in his head and wondered if it might be connected to the stone. So he picked up Chammy and stood up himself. Based on the stiffness in his legs he was sure that he had been sitting there longer he felt like he had. Once up he moved off the stone and walked a good distant away from the Anchor Ring and then holds up chammy and says. “Will you respond now?”

There was again that long pause. ‘How would you like me to respond.’ The thought came back.

“What is your name?” Bedwyr asked.

‘Chammy silly, you named me.’ The thought came back.

Okay Bedwyr was sure he wouldn’t have ever thought of that response.

“But your not alive.”

‘Not yet.’

“What does that mean?” Bedwyr said.

‘I have no clue.’

Bedwyr studied the shell. He had seen so many strange things on the island that a talking shell wasn’t more strange. Bedwyr slipped the shell back in his pocket and wondered about his conversation. Maybe the shell was awakening as Bedwyr spent more time with it. Bedwyr wasn’t any more spiritual then others of his race, but they lived with spirits more often and it wasn’t unheard for one to become more awake. Maybe it was something like that. Bedwyr looked at the world around him deciding that it would be time to move on for the trial.

As he walked away he though about what he seen and experienced as he had studied the Anchor Ring. He wondered if that was a fluke what he had experienced or if it was something the Ring did. Bedwyr realized he would need to come by an visit more. There was much to still discover about the island and he was happy to do that exploring. It was something he had always hoped for with the chance to explore something new.

Re: Anchor's Ring

Bedwyr

Feedback

I always love Bedwyr’s interactions with the island. He is a very calm and patient man, as befitting a gardener, and this thread reads less like an explorer in uncharted territory and more like he’s getting to know a very shy soul. He lets the island get used to him at the same time he’s getting used to it, and neither one of them has any need to rush. I am fascinated by Chammy, I wonder what will come of it as Bedwyr continues to study it. Lovely writing, and enjoy your rewards!

Rewards

  • XP: 10

Knowledges

  • Meditation: x2
  • Discipline: x2
  • Gardening: x2

Consequences

  • Bedwyr managed to collect seeds from around Anchor’s Ring. If he plants them, he will find they sprout into somewhat plain flowers that don’t seem magical at all ― until he smells them. The scent of these flowers will summon memories of calm and safety, which will persist even if they are harvested and dried.
