Well Met By Daylight

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The sun was in the world again, and all things seemed just a bit easier.

Scalvoris Town still clamored. The scent of salt and trash still permeated the air, and it all made Jinyel wish for nothing more than calm forests and birdsong. But the raw pain of it had lessened, or perhaps he had simply grown a thicker tolerance for it.

In any case, he rode Ailuhn through Scalvoris Town with only soft clothing and Monya at his side as protection. His armor lay back at camp, alongside Divi and Masoch with Toutouye to watch over them. Divi, heavy with new fat and his silver dapple coat aglimmer with good health, trotted agreeably beside Ailuhn with his head held high. More than one passersby paused their work to watch him pass, especially those passersby who worked carriages. With such a striking pattern and mane, Divi would make an enchanting carriage horse.

But Divi’s future was not a question to be solved today. Here, now, he was Jinyel’s pack horse, because there were many things to be bought in Scalvoris Town before he set out for Almund ― not least of which was a saddle for Ailuhn, suited to both land and water travel. Until she had one, Jinyel couldn’t very well store supplies on her bare back.

The grounds of Scalvoris University were quieter than the general streets. Though plenty of students lay on the green to take in the Ashan sun, there was far less shouting and far more reading. Jinyel had never been one for civilized places, but he tolerated the University far better than the rest of Scalvoris Town.

The stables were accustomed to Ailuhn by now, and in due time Jinyel found his way to the University halls with Monya at his heel. He navigated by memory alone; letters and signs were still incomprehensible to him. He knew how to write his name ― two of his names ― and little else.

Artiga bustled about her laboratory, as she usually did at this hour. She lit up at Jinyel’s arrival, with an exclaimed, “Oh, good! The amanita has gotten all the way through the wood, and I need you to draw a diagram of its structure.”

“I can help with a diagram of its structure.” Little time, must be swift, I must go on a journey. As he strode toward their experiment, his wolf took up her customary patrol around the room.

“That’s… a trip? You’re going on a trip?” Artiga’s ability to read his hands grew deeper with each season. “Oh, well, help would be just fine. The beans haven’t grown much, but they aren’t dying since the graft, so I’ll take that as a good sign. Ashan’s only just started, after all.”

With the sun returned, their little laboratory had been converted into a greenhouse. On the desk, potted plants stretched toward the window. Under the desk, six types of mushrooms sprouted out of a decaying log.

When he crouched, Artiga crouched, and whispered, “Well? Are they still connected?”

He lay hands on the rotten log, and with a thumb to an amanita cap was able to peer through its enervations.

“They are… connected.” Amazement. “One organism? But all growing the same way.”

“Growing the same way?” Artiga tilted “Wait, they aren’t separate species anymore?”

Yes. And no. “The roots, the threads, all the same. But each mushroom blooms as the species it was before.”

“Are they all eating the wood?”

Yes.

“Even the ones that aren’t supposed to eat wood?”

Yes.

“Fascinating.”
Artiga leaned so close to the wood that her nose was nearly pressed against it. “What do you think would happen if you attached a proper plant to it? Some of the bean leaves, perhaps, or ― no no, you’re in a hurry, we can deal with this elsewhen. But the fact that all the species have merged is plenty of evidence for my next proposal, I might even have us a bigger laboratory next time.”

That would make things easier. “I would be glad.” Jinyel straightened. “Monya,” to me. Departure. There were many things to do before the day was out.

It had been some time since the events of Cylus that brought Rickith into Ashan, but he didn't forget what he had planned to do with regards to helping Jinyel regain his memories. Continuing his research into memorberries, he read a bit more in depth about them, and found that they only helped a person recall a flavor in their past that's associated with a memory, not actually recovering specific memories. Apparently he had misread that in the text prior, so he felt a bit dismayed by it, rereading it and trying to understand their unique properties. Maybe there really was no way to recover Jinyel's memories of his time spent with Rickith. Perhaps he was just fated to forget about Rickith in his entirety. The young alchemist didn't know if that was the case, but in the end he closed the book and let out a sigh.

Right as he did, he heard Artiga in the next room, her mushroom lab, speaking with someone, and recognized the other voice in the room as none other than Jinyel. Perhaps I'll go see what he is up to right now, and see if him and Artiga need any help with the mushroom research they are doing. Lifting himself up from his seat, he'd make his way to the open door of his lab, and just as he peeked his head out of it, getting ready to walk out, he saw Jinyel making his way out of Artiga's lab.

"Er... Hello Jinyel!" he said as he looked towards the man. "It's been awhile since I've seen you, how are you doing?" If Jinyel deigned to turn and look towards Rickith, the young alchemist would smile and ask, "Would you like to come in here and chat a bit? I have some not so good news about the potential recovery of your memories, after having researched some more information about memorberries..." Hopefully Jinyel would agree to come talk with him about it, but Rickith knew that Jinyel was probably a very busy person, and didn't necessarily have time to speak with an academic such as him. They did lead two very different lives...

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

It was Monya who sensed Rickith first. The she-wolf lifted her head, tail stiff and ears pointed forward. She had been on edge ever since Cylus, and Jinyel had not yet decided if that relieved or distressed him.

No doubt she was more alert to strangers than he was. But at this point, he hesitated to call Rickith a stranger.

“Rickith.” Jinyel was pleased, not not quite surprised to see the man again. Well met. “I have been…” better. “... I am alright. You remain uninjured?”

He inclined his head toward Artiga, and she shook her head with a distracted smile. “I am satisfied here. No need to keep you.”

Jinyel nodded and bade Monya to come back to his side. She was hesitant to do so, though a few moments of examining Rickith eventually convinced her that he wasn’t a danger.

“I have some time to spare,” Jinyel said. Not much. “It is short, but I can spare it.”

He took his leave of Artiga. As he closed the door and followed the alchemist into his own laboratory, Jinyel’s she-wolf caught up to Rickith and licked his hand experimentally. Did she remember the scent? Two licks. Three. That seemed to be what she needed; Monya relaxed after the third one and felt no more need to watch Rickith like a hawk. She instead did the same thing she’d done in Artiga’s lab: walk circles around the room in case any monsters were hiding under the shelves.

“My memories.” Hesitation. A part of him didn’t want to speak of them. It was an old wound that had just begun to heal. Ruined ground that was slowly, finally on the edge of becoming green again. Remembering the wound felt dangerously close to opening it back up. I am glad to have seen you today. Deep regret. “I… have not remembered, as you asked me to do.” That was half of the truth. The gentle half. I think… I feel “I cannot give you that. I am sorry.” Genuine apology. “But the aid you once gave to me still stands. If there is something else you would ask of me in return, I will do my best to give it.”

When Jinyel followed Rickith back into the laboratory he was working from, Rickith felt Monya lick his hand a few times, and it made him smile slightly. He remembered the wolf fondly, even though he had only met her a few times. Turning around, and looking towards Jinyel, Rickith listened to what he was saying, and watched any signing that he did, just to make sure he didn't miss anything. When he explained how he could not give Rickith what he had asked for in return for his aid in getting his marriaged annulled, Rickith nodded his head.

"That's where my not so good news comes in as well. I had thought that memorberries would help retrieve lost memories for a person, but they only make the person remember a taste of something they've had in the past, that's associated by a memory they currently have. Not recovering lost memories. At this point, I don't have any good news on how to recover your memories, and I am sorry for that," Rickith said as his dark hued gaze watched Jinyel's reactions.

In terms of what Rickith wanted from Jinyel? any aid in exchange from the aid that Rickith had provided him, Rickith thought for a moment. He was mostly working on a potion to help a person with mental anguish, so perhaps he could ask Jinyel if he comes across any type of flora or material that can help with improving a person's mental state, to obtain some for him on his ventures. "I don't know what you're plans are in the future..." Rickith began. "But in terms of something you could do for me, perhaps obtaining some reagents for me on your travels. Whenever you stop by Scalvoris again you could provide me with some. I'm currently working on a potion to help alleviate the symptoms that my mother had prior to her passing, and any type of flora or material that can help improve a person's mental status, I could most certainly use..."

He didn't know what else there was that he could ask for. It pained him that Jinyel couldn't remember their time spent together, where Rickith had grown fond of him, but perhaps that was partially Rickith's fault for being a recluse the past few seasons and not heading back to the Sacred Forest to find Jinyel again.

These ‘memorberries’ would not help Jinyel. Not that he’d been holding his breath for their help, but there was a certain finality to knowing no earthen remedy existed. At least, not in his or Rickith’s abilities. It came as a strange relief to finally set down this idea, though he kept that relief to himself ― Rickith seemed far more grieved by the loss of Jinyel’s memories than Jinyel himself.

No apologies necessary. “What happens is what happens.” Contentment. This loss is tolerable. “I am sure I lost good memories of you, just as I am sure I lost bad memories of many other things. Hardship was familiar to me before and after the Sacred Forest ― I have no reason to believe it was any different during what I’ve lost. But you and I are here now, and if those memories grieve you so dearly, we can repeat them, and I will simply know you in Scalvoris instead of the Eternal Empire.”

And so the matter was put to rest. No berries, no medicines, no digging around in the rubble of Jinyel’s dreamscape. The wound could remain closed, and heal in its own time. Here, now, there were other ways to balance the scales between himself and Rickith ― although the alchemist’s phrasing caught Jinyel by surprise.

“When I stop by Scalvoris again…?” Oh. Amusement. Jinyel shook his head with a chuckle. I suppose I have been swift in my passing. Apologies, misunderstanding. “I live here.” Well, close enough. Closer to this town than anywhere else. “Although I do also travel a great deal.”

He inclined his head toward the window, where a warm Ashan sun streamed inside.

Come with me, if you like. “I taught you to handle a horse in the Sacred Forest? I will teach you again. I must see a luthier before my journey begins. If you guide me to one, I will show you where I live.”

When Jinyel told him that they could repeat the memories they had here in Scalvoris, Rickith was curious what he meant by that, and then he stated that he lived here. "Oh, you live here now?" Rickith asked rhetorically. "Perhaps we can rebuild what we lost then..." he said, a slight smile crossing his face. He still knew they came from two very different worlds, but maybe opposites complement each other in some ways. Things that Rickith knows, he could teach Jinyel, while things that Jinyel knew, he could teach Rickith.

Rickith had told Jinyel when they met earlier in Cylus that indeed he had taught him how to ride in the Sacred Forest. "Yes, you did teach me how to ride. I can ride a horse slowly, but I don't think I'd be as adept if it was galloping or something," he admitted, having only ridden a horse once since the Sacred Forest, that being with Jinyel in the beginning of Cylus. Then Jinyel asked him about where he could find a luthier at and a puzzle expression crossed Rickith's face. "A luthier? I don't believe I've ever heard something of that name before, but if you tell me a bit more about it, I should be able to find one here in Scalvoris to help you out," he then said, and waited for an explanation.

He would need a better explanation of what exactly a luthier was, so that he could better provide an answer to Jinyel's question. "I know of a great deal of shops around here, so maybe i've passed by one with a luthier in it," he then added, while awaiting Jinyel's explanation of what a luthier happened to be.

Rickith had no objection to leaving the past in the past, and instead turning their focus toward the present and future. At this, Jinyel nodded Gratefully, and gestured for Rickith to Follow me, then.

“A luthier is… an instrument-maker.” I think. From what I have heard. That is all I’d rather say out loud. And I’d rather you not speak of it to others.

Not that he suspected Rickith to be part of the Hollow Prince’s web at all, but his uncle had made it clear that Jinyel was never to touch that mandolin or the dresses underneath it. But its place was in Jinyel’s room, and it was in poor repair, and Jinyel did not like things in his space to be in poor repair if he could help it.

What his uncle didn’t know about this mandolin wouldn’t hurt him.

“I know one or two things about altered mental states.” Some. Unsure if it’s the sort of thing you’re looking for. “Dried hemp can elevate mood.” Also slows down other things. “Poppy seed extract can very much elevate mood.” Extreme example. Many side effects. “My… someone I know,” family member, “can brew alcohol which does that.” It depends on how you wish to affect mood, and for how long.

The University was warmer than the last time Jinyel had set foot in it. Patterned windows spilled sunlight across the floor in geometric patterns, some of them stained in bright colors. The narrow hallways led them outside, and from there Jinyel cut toward the stables.

The same as last time, he said. “Divi.” Big. Strong calm. Already saddled. “Do you remember how to mount?”

He led the draft horse out of the stable, took Rickith’s wrist, and brought the alchemist’s hand up to pat Divi’s nose.

You said, you can ride slowly. “Can you lead the way upon him, if we remain slow?”

When Jinyel stated that it was an instrument maker, Rickith nodded, and in broken sign language said back. Secret is safe. He didn't know who he was keeping the secret from, but it didn't matter, if Jinyel wanted Rickith to keep it to himself, he would definitely do so. He wanted to keep the man's trust, or what trust he had built with him over the past cycle, and wouldn't do anything that would hopefully damage the trust that they might have built up between them.

Then Jinyel began to explain a few different things that help with mood, which one sounded plausible to help with what he was thinking of, the types of symptoms he was trying to treat, but poppy seeds and alcohol, Rickith figured would only hinder the person. He was well aware of the effects of alcohol and worked to try and avoid it himself, as he didn't drink. He didn't want to become a drunkard such as some people he'd seen exit bars, and falling over themselves, so it just wasn't something for him, and something that wouldn't help the patients he was working with.

"The dried hemp might be useful... I think the poppy seeds probably have too many side effects, though I've only heard about them in passing, and alcohol wouldn't do what I need it to do, I've seen the effects of it, and it might worsen the symptoms of the people I'm going to be working with... but the hemp would work decently to help calm them down when their agitated," he said after Jinyel finished explaining the different reagents he felt might be of use to Rickith.

As they continued out of the University's halls, and towards the stables, Jinyel would bring out a horse named Divi, and ask Rickith if he remembered how to mount. Rickith nodded his head and then allowed Jinyel to take his wrist to bring his hand up towards Divi's nose. "Horses are such amazing creatures..." said Rickith as he calmly patted the horse's nose. Once he had made sure Divi was comfortable with him, he'd mount the horse like Jinyel had showed him to in the Sacred Forest, situating himself upon him. Turning his head to look towards Jinyel, Rickith said, "If we go slow, a simple trot, I can lead you to what you're asking about. I've seen a store with those items displayed in the windows." He made it a point to keep the description of the store vague since Jinyel wanted him to tell nobody, and he didn't know if anyone in or near the stables might be listening...

Jinyel had assumed Rickith wasn’t one for secrets. Perhaps it had been incorrect to assume that. The alchemist observed Jinyel’s reluctant to verbally state his intent, acknowledged it, and agreed to conspire alongside it. Even if he didn’t understand why, Rickith signed Secret is safe, and for that Jinyel was Grateful.

Divi was a calm, accommodating animal, and the alchemist took control easily enough. Not quickly, nor particularly smoothly, but easily, and that was enough to be considered a success. For his own journey, Jinyel bade Ailuhn to unfurl from her stall and come once again into sunlight.

The sarkin chuffed curiously at Rickith, a deep rumble in her chest that might be mistaken for a growl. As both men mounted and began to make their way out of the University, Rickith remained vague about their destination. Jinyel appreciated it, and did his best not to chuckle. It all felt a bit absurd to be so secret about a retuned mandolin, but that was par for the course wherever the son of Sintra was involved.

Rickith wanted dried hemp. That was how Jinyel could balance the scales without changing his dreamscape further. Though Jinyel didn’t have any on his person, he was happy enough to acquire some, and his trip would take him in a full circle around the island. His uncle grew various drugs, poisons and medicines in the Egilrun garden, he knew, and it was entirely possible he had the correct plants for the task.

How close our destination? Jinyel asked in sign, falling into trot at Rickith’s flank. Path became street, people flowed past them, and the auster lines of the University became the ramshackle patterns of Scalvoris Town proper. “How long have you lived here?” You seem to know it much better than I.

As Rickith and Jinyel made their way into the city proper, Jinyel asked Rickith how long until they arrived there. In broken sign, Rickith stated, "Few minutes until our destination..." It wouldn't take them long to get to the luthier's shop, and Rickith recalled where it was quite vividly as he remembered seeing a myriad of instruments for sale there. Then Jinyel asked Rickith how long he had been in Scalvoris, and Rickith smiled.

"I came here in search of a cure for a disorder my mother had come down with. It started off as dizzyness, followed by clumbsiness, then memory loss, and finally it took her life..." Rickith said. "That was about an arc ago, at the beginning of the rebirth cycle last arc, right before I ended up in the Sacred Woods." He recalled what Doran had said about having a support group, or friends that he could discuss his mother's passing with. Perhaps Jinyel could be a friend like that, though Rickith would rather not burden him with any emotional baggage. He was already seeing a doctor for his depression, Dr. Jane Sonin, and through their counselling sessions, he was becoming more and more accepting of his mother's passing, and more resolute on what he could do to either help someone out who was experiencing the same symptoms, to help them avoid a catastrophic loss like that of Rickith's mother, or to ease their passing with any means possible.

That was why Rickith was looking for flora or even fauna that could help with the mental status of a person, whether that be improving it, or at least making it manageable. Perhaps Jinyel would pick up on that now that rickith explained it to him, or well gave him a bit of his past history that Jinyel may have lost from their time in the Sacred Forest. After a few more minutes of riding, they'd come upon a shop with some varied stringed instruments in the windows. "This is the place," Rickith signed to Jinyel as he tilted his head towards the shop. "I can wait for you out here if you'd like?"
