Bedwyr walked around the pond at the edge of the farm. Han’s was walking beside him as he help Bedwyr better understand what was needed for this different farming setting. There were many things that were similar but there were differences. One of the biggest differences Bedwyr had seen was the plants themselves. Each plant seemed well suited for where it was growing and Bedwyr wondered how if he tried to plant Iulure crops it would be different being here then on the floating island. He also wondered the same in reverse. One of the things he had noticed and was seeing here for sure was rain. Iulure floating up in the sky didn’t have rain storms the way Faldrass did. The clouds would often envelope the island and leave the various islands soaked with the water from its foggy structure.

Han’s was showing Bedwyr how things were different here. He looked at Bedwyr as the looked at the pond. “You don’t water plants?” He asked.

“Of course we water plants, but we do so differently. We get rained on differently as we are in the clouds rather than under them.” Bedwyr said. He paused and added. “We do get rain that falls on us yes but most of it doesn’t its just kind of forms and drops.

“Interesting.” Han said. “Well this pond is used as a back up for when we don’t get enough rain to naturally water the crops.” He pointed around. “So it is important to keep an eye on it to make sure the water doesn’t escape. The most likely way it will be is the small gate.” Bedwyr looked at the gate and could see how that could affect things. “Though we don’t want the water in the pond to sit to long so even if we don’t need it we will allow water out and allow it to refill with fresh water at the next storm.” Han paused and looked at Bedwyr. “Do you deal with stagnant water on your island.”

“Yes we do. We don’t deal with large bodies of water, but we have are ponds, streams and even some rivers. Stagnant water is just as green and mossy up there as down here.” Bedwyr said calmly. He wasn’t offended by the question he asked similar question about how things were different here. Salt water was one of those things that he hadn’t ever delt with, well not really. Salt spray yes, but salty bodies of water weren’t something found. His friend had actually learned to not assume something things were the same.

“So you don’t have irrigation.”

“Yes just different then here.” Bedwyr said.

“Anyways its Saun now and we are going to release water to flood the crops to help them survive the season and will continue to do so over the whole season.” Bedwyr listened as the Han opened the gate part way. “You don’t want to just let it fly lose. That much water could damage plants but also move soil in ways you don’t want it to. We also want to control how much water is used because we will need to use more later.” With the water opened it began to flow throw the canal built farther down the canal. It wasn’t very wide and Bedwyr was surprised that he was able to keep up with it at a brisk pace. Farther down Bedwyr could see that a branch across the ditch. The two men raced up and picked up the branch as the water rushed upon it.

“Do you normally clean the canal before you run it.” Bedwyr ask

“We give it a check over but only really clear anything that stopped the waters flow. Usually we what happens is the junk will billed up and usually will deposit as it goes on the field or will accumulate. It saves time to let the water make it into one pile to clean then trying to pick up a couple things here and there.”

The two were following the path when suddenly Bedwyr felt the hair on his arms begin to rise. Living in the clouds such feelings weren’t uncommon and were a sign. Bedwyr grabbed Han and dragged him to the ground. His friend didn’t go down quietly and shouted his objection as he was brought rough ground. Bedwyr pulled his wings and wrapped his tail around his own leg as he pushed himself to the ground. As suddenly as Bedwyr’s own action there was a bright flash of light, so intense that even though he was stairing at the ground and could only see it through his side vision he still go white outlines in his vision, and almost trailing upon it he heard and felt the pressure from the boom that comes with lightning. He felt the vibrantion race through his body as if he had been slap and his ears hurt for a brief moment.

As quickly as it had come it was gone, but Bedwyr didn’t move and grabbed at Han’s as he moved to move. Han was surprised by stayed down as a second later they had a repeat of the previous performance. The two men stayed there on the ground for a few more bits and through a few more flash of lightning before they felt it was safe because they hadn’t sensed anything for a several bits. Bedwyr looked up and carefully stood up. Thunder and Lighntning were not uncommon in his home, common even, but here on the ground ever time he had seen them it had been when there was a rain storm. The air was dry, well save for the humidity, at the moment, and not a single drop. It had also been a short storm.

He looked at Han and asked. “Are storms like that normal.”

“No, they happen but usually they have rain.”

The two young man sat there for a long moment neither speaking but both working on getting there systems settled down. Neither felt the need to talk about it. Why really. It had been scarry, and they both knew it. What they needed was just a moment to collect themselves and then they still had a field to water.

Bedwyr was hesitant as the move forward. The surprise thunder storm had affected him and made his more cautious, but at the same time they needed to water the field. Bedwyr walked next to Han who also was more quiet as they moved more hesitantly. There hesitation didn’t help since the water in the canal had raced past them while they waited for the thunderstorm to pass. As Bedwyr moved farther down the canal his confidence began to return and he moved quicker. By the time they caught up with the water it had already started to spread across the field. Bedwyr looked over the field and was surprised that the water had barely touch one edges.

Han looked around and nodded. “Lets clean up some of this debrie.” He said pointing to some piles of leave and branches that had been shoved aside. Bedwyr nodded and asked. “About how long will it take to flood the field.”

“About two breaks.” Han said as they worked.

Bedwyr nodded as the two worked at various jobs around the field waiting and watching to make sure the flooding occurred. There were little things such as making sure ever where got covered, and watching the speed of the water. Bedwyr found that he was less wet then he thought he would be from all the work but his feet got muddy when he had to take his shoes off and walk out into the field to check a spot that seemed have a problem.

He had expected them to stop once it had gone all the way across, but Han stopped as they wanted the far end to get more water, but soon they did turn off the water. Bedwyr kept on eye on the sky though for the rest of the day worried that another dry thunderstorm would pass.

Once done with the field they moved on to another field and continued in that vein for the rest of the day .

Feedback

Woo, a near-miss with a lightning bolt, sandiwiched in some productive landscaping lessons. I found the description of the lightning strike very vivid and made me shiver a bit even. Nicely done.

I was also interested to hear the differences in irrigation methods on Faldrass vs Iulure. Interesting that there's also pond scum up on those isles.

Well done, thanks for the read!
