Over-Under the Brawling Tree

Image

At two different points of the city, a few hours after the conclusion of the All-Tavern's tournament, two people were troubled in their sleep. Gennadiya was awoken by the whispers of Ymiden, still just a few days from the advent of his season. She heard him whisper in her ear, "There's a child being reborn at the Brawling Tree, within the Lightning Dome. I bid you go and offer comfort." It might've been her imagination, the strange mania that often followed a fitful sleep on awakening. But Gennadiya knew her Patron's voice. And she had her instructions.

Somewhere else in the city, Vivian was sleeping off the activities of earlier in the trial. The red that had stuck to her collar, now floated off of her jacket, and then landed beneath her nose. The blood red petal rested there for a moment, then trembled, and sent a shock through her. She saw the Changeling's Boneyard, and instead of walls of water, there were walls of fire, as high as a expansive cavern. She felt the heat, and all at once was startled to wakefulness.

Then the leaf floated away from her face, and back toward the fabric of her jacket, where there it stuck.

She had a feeling something was happening at the brawling tree, or perhaps it was just the strange behavior of those petals that had fluttered so wildly through her rroom. Either way, it was her choice whether to continue resting or follow up on this strange anomaly.

Whether they arrived or not, things were afoot beneath the Willow Tree that was colloquially known as the Brawling Tree, for its healing effects upon fighters who participated in battles beneath its branches, in the Lightning Dome Arena.

A murder of crows, scores, maybe even hundreds of them all fluttered through the branches, making a raucous sound among the lot of them. One of the larger crows, no doubt a leader among the Murder, was tearing at a stringy piece of flesh, which had attached itself to the tree. Then it flew to the top, and began rustling leaves. All of the birds began rustling the leaves, until they began falling off, almost faster than they could regrow. It might've seemed to anyone looking on that they were trying to strip the tree bare.

The glowing leaves coalesced and began sticking to the stringy piece of flesh that was hanging from the tree. Eventually, they formed the figure of a small woman, as if growing the person as a fruit from the tree.

The glowing leaves began pulsing around the bloodied scrap of flesh. Began undulating, as if it was trying to breathe life into the shape it was forming. Within a few bits, the glow subsided, and the dead leaves of the Brawling tree, grown red, fell to the ground like a piece of paper merchet. But this had heft to it, enough that it semeed to have the full body of a person inside of them. Inside the leaves, a body came back to life, not knowing who she was, or where she was.

The murder of crows took flight, but not before the largest among them gave a strange look to the leafy construct that lay on the ground. It swooped down, and tore a bloody gash in the shoulder of the husk, leaving a wound that bled freely beneath the layer of leaves.

Then it was gone, along with the rest of the murder.

The In-Between

When the Dragon wakes and the Healing Hands grow cold,
And when the Queen of Masks rests in her Grave,
Past and Future will unite,
So that the Order will open its hands
And let the Pride of the Peacemaker fly again.
And the addled King will rise,
Divested of all the horrors he was accused of.
And where Lightning Strikes and Thunder roars,
A Door will close, but another one will open,
And what was broken will be Reforged.

There were words, and she could hear them.

There was a voice, and she could recognise it.

But neither of those things were in her mind, neither of them were what she focused on. No, she focused on her hands. She had hands.

She knew that was good, having hands. Sometimes, she thought, her feelings lived in them. Her face frowned slightly as she wondered what that meant. How could feelings live in hands? That was most peculiar. Her body shivered as she realised that she felt a breath of cold air; it was cold and yet, more than that she shivered because it was exhilarating. It was harsh, that cold. Harsh and cold and loud and alive. Physical sensations were new. Or no, she thought. Not new but remembered. Or ... not remembered but ......

returning

That was it. Where she had been there had been no cold. But there had been no cold, no ability to feel the chill on the end of your nose, no feeling of warmth as your hands wrapped around the cup or your face buried into the scarf.
A scarf. I made a scarf. We threw snowballs, I'm sure.
There was no cold, no hot. No warm. Nothing. No feeling. That was what she remembered - no feeling. Did she remember that, she wondered? It felt almost like it was a memory but then it slipped through her fingers. Her fingers, where sometimes her emotions lived.

But here, there was cold and there was hot and there was. ... there was ... what was that?

Silver eyes fluttered open and she frowned, deeply. It hurt. The lights which pierced the darkness, flickering against the darkness, they hurt. But that was because her eyes were new, she thought. New? No. Not new.

reforged.

Yet it was that. Reforged. Remade. But more than her hands. Blinking as her eyes adjusted, she looked down. Her pale hand reached out and touched the ... what was it? Tree. Yes that was it. It was a tree. Why was she here with a tree? Her hand touched the tree. It was hard and unyielding and jagged and sharp. The memories of where she had been slipped and slid from her, but the final tendrils of them told her that where she had been, there had been no hard and unyielding and jagged and sharp. There had been nothing? Nothing? Something? She couldn't hold it.

Not even in her hands.

There, in front of her, was a bird. A bird? Her head snapped up and she looked at it. Dark eyes looked back at her and she forgot what had happened. She lost where she had been - she couldn't hold it, simply couldn't. But, looking at the bird that she knew was important - but more than that, she knew she could trust, she spoke the only words she could even think to speak.

"Where am I?" she asked and that, in itself, led to another and possibly more important question.

"Who am I?"

The bird, of course, did not answer and despite her hopes to the contrary, all of her feelings weren't in her hands. They were all over her.

Genna awakened from her sleep and heard the whisper of her patron. She wasn’t surprised to receive a summons to go to someone who needed help, to a rebirth, that was her calling as an Exalted of Ymiden. The location though was a bit of a surprise. Moving quickly the young woman climbed out of her bed and retrieved her dressing gown. She did pause long enough to put her boots on and write anote before departing her room.

The house was quiet as Genna walked the halls up to the roof. Once up there she found Shal asleep enjoying the heights and the rising heat from the house. The snake opened its eyes and looked at her as she approached. “We have a destination this night.” She said taking. “I am sorry for waking you.” The snake blinked and Genna climbed on its back and it stretched itself out.

They took off and flew in the most direct route to the Lightning Dome. The snake staying just above the roofs of the buildings. He wasn’t speady, but his ability to make a straight line save time a carriage would have lost is following the streets. Soon Genna saw the area and indicated that it was there destination. The snake settled at the edge of the arena and allowed Genna to slip off of his back. Genna didn’t move though as she could clearly see the tree standing in the middle. Genna herself would be hard to miss since her platinum blond hair glowed like the sun rise, a fact that was even more clear in the night.

She then watched the attack on the tree. Part of her wanted to do something but she wasn’t sure what and Ymiden had called her hear for a rebirth. Maybe this was some how connected. Wide blue eyes watched as a form began to take shape in the leaves. Patient and discipline kept her still until the end, but only until the end. She saw the blood, but she also heard the voice. She KNEW that voice. Genna threw caution and discipline to the wind and raced across the arena. She would know that voice anywhere and a cry escaped her mouth and she ran. “Faith.” She said raw emotion in her voice, and as she ran tears came to her eyes, her hair billowing around her even as her robe and gown flair around her.

Vivian was trying to get to sleep after the tournament, but that leaf that had gotten stuck in her shirt apparently had other plans. The nightmare of the burning Boneyard woke her up nice and quickly and she looked at the leaf stuck in her jacket. "All right, then. Let's see what this is about." she said, quickly getting dressed and grabbing her sword before leaving her house. She didn't grab her shield or take the time to put on her armor, her warden powers would provide those for her, if needed, but she still preferred Shiryu to any weapon made by her various powers. Using Ride the Lightning, Vivian was able to travel quickly through the city and she arrived at roughly the same time as Gennadiya on her flying snake.

Vivian nodded at the healer as they went into the arena, Vivian drawing her sword in case there was a threat to be dealt with. She had not, however, expected a whole bunch of crows to be sitting in the tree. That didn't seem much like until they started to attack the tree. Vivian let out an alarmed gasp and started forward, but stopped when she the leave start to form into a shape, like they were trying to grow a...person? Vivian had learned better than to act recklessly when dealing with the supernatural. She watched as whatever they were forming dropped to the ground, then made her way over to it. The lead crow apparently felt like stabbing the leaves, she wasn't sure why, but then she heard the voice from beneath the leaves.

"Doctor?" she asked, her tone confused and hopeful. It couldn't be Faith, right? She had died on Scalvoris, a long ways away from Rharne. But she had been the source of the Brawling Tree, and it had healed her once. Perhaps there was a way for it to bring her back to life and it had done just that. Vivian started brushing leaves off of her. "Doctor, is that you? Are you okay?" she asked, her tone showing her worry. There was blood, was it Faith's, or did it come from something else. It was night, Vivian's restorative MB power wouldn't work, but with Genna here, that really shouldn't be a problem.

The In-Between

It was loud and bright and jagged. The world was, she thought. The world - this world - it was loud and jagged and bright. Yes.

Her eyes squinted as the light assaulted them. It was night time, she knew, and it was dark, but the shock of the light on her newly-formed retina assaulted her senses. The quiet sounds, the soft sensations, they were amplified, enhanced, pushed to be bigger and bigger than they were. Her thoughts, too, were jagged and mismatched, although they grew more coherent and cogent as the seconds ticked by. This was the world, she knew. Not the in-between place she had thought it was, but the world. She recognised it. She knew it.

But she didn't remember it.

Looking down at her hands, she tried to gather her thoughts, to understand and then she recognised something. Something important, something that she hadn't understood before now.

"Ouch," she said and she recognised the discomfort, the jaggedness and .... not-right-ness she felt. It was pain. It was painful. She was in pain. Yes. Yes, that was the word. She lifted her hand to where the discomfort - the pain - where that was happening. It was in a place, she knew the name of it. Shoulder, yes, that was it. Putting her hand to her shoulder, she felt the hot warmth of her own blood and she winced.

But then, there was a person. Another person - not a bird, this one, a person - who literally glowed. That person was making their way and, holding on to her shoulder, she kept looking at the person who approached. Not only, it seemed, did she not know herself, she didn't know the glowing person. But, as the person - the woman - came into focus, she realised that .....

"I know you?" It was a whispered, hoarse question and as Gennadiya (though Faith no more knew that name than she knew her own) ran to her, she watched wide-eyed. There was no fear. No jaggedness. Just relief. Relief that she knew her. And there was another woman - had they always been here? She didn't think so. "Both." she whispered. She knew them both. One, it seemed, was called Faith and hte other called Doctor. Or, she wondered, maybe they were talking to each other so the one who said Faith was called Doctor and the one who said Doctor was called Faith? Maybe it was that. She didn't know and she shook her head, recongising that it didn't matter.

Instead, looking at the two women with innocent, trusting eyes, she held out her hand. "It hurts," she said, informatively. Then, she tried to reassure them, because they seemed upset. "Are you alright? It was an important question, after all. She looked, confused and child-like, at the two of them and spoke again in a hoarse - although slightly less so - whisper. "I know you?"

She hoped she did. She felt that she did, she felt an innate and almost overwhelming sense of trust for these two women. But then, she had to accept, she had limited capacity for sense right now and it might be fair to consider that her judgement wasn't quite 100%.

Genna nodded to Vivian as the two entered the arena. The warrior approached the even first but as Genna rush forward she arrived just after the other woman. Despite her emotions Genna had thrown all control to the wind and her various medical training began to take in the details. Faith was looking at both of them. Her look went from confused to one of recognition but the confusion was still there. Her whole gaze was wondering and confused. It reminded Genna of her daughters expression for the first trials after rescuing her from the caves.

The first thing was that Faith was bleeding and she verbalized that it hurt. Genna summoned upon Moseke’s Light. And as the green light radiated around her hand she stretched it out and touched the cut. Normally Genna would just treat the wound normally but this felt like one of those times where this was important and needed to be done. She weaved the light like she would have a stitching needle and thread to close the wound and heal it with no scare. Once it was done she would let the ability go.

In truth Faith fashion she asked if they were alright. Genna looked at the woman who was one of her closest friends. Someone who had worked beside her. There was something different about her. While the gaze was Faith, it was a confused Faith. Genna was quickly picking up other differences. The marks that connected her to various Immortals were gone. Genna smiled even as tears still fell down her cheeks. “I am good. How are you Faith? Is there pain anywhere else.” Faith said again that she knew them. Genna glanced at Vivian at the question. “You do know both of us. I am Genna and this is Vivian.” There was that same confusion, which frankly made the most sense. This ten minutes had been strange. A person back from the dead and newly reborn confused, was well to Genna not great but not odd either. She looked over at Vivian, and indicated with her head that they should go some place. “Let us get her some place more appropriate.” Genna said as she slipped off her dressing gown and put it about the smaller woman and tied it off. Genna’s night gown was modest enough and more modest then Faith’s dress. “Lets find some place warm.”

To Vivian she said. “Lets go to the Earth clinic.” Genna could look her over there and it was some place familiar and loved by Faith.

Re: Over-Under the Brawling Tree

But the three ladies were not alone in the Arena, far from it. They had company in the stands, in the form of a lone custodian who was sweeping the chairs and stands, and cleaning up after the mess made by the All-Tavern's tournament. His face was wrinked like a well-beaten piece of tanned leather. And his scowl didn't much improve his complexion.

"OY!" His loud voice came from the seating area of the Lightning Dome, and swiftly signalled the approach of a disgruntled custodian, descending the steps to meet them on the floor of the Arena, near the middle where the Brawling Tree stood.

"Oy, you can't be here! This is a restricted area, no tourists!" The custodian waved his broom threateningly, Frowning from head to heel, if it was possible this custodian was doing it.

"It's bad enough I gots to pick up all the used bottles from the degenerates observin' a battle of gnats among brawlers." The Custodian huffed, "But now I gots people sneaking into the arena, with large reptiles at hand and lightning flashin. You all... Stay right there while I fetch the Administrator, Markus Gaul..."

So saying, the Custodian ran off, looking over his shoulder to check that they weren't going anywhere. His broom lay forgotten on the floor of the arena, while he made his way down to the bloodworks, muttering all the way. The door to the bloodworks wasn't even fastened behind him, as he anticipated arriving swiftly with the administrator. He only could hope his intimidation tactics had their intended effect of nailing the women in their current position.

Re: Over-Under the Brawling Tree

Vivian's eyes widened as Faith asked if she knew them. She did let out a bit of a laugh when Faith, who had just been reborn from a tree and stabbed in the shoulder by a bird, asked if they were all right. "Besides a bit of a shock, we're fine. It's you that has us nervous." she said, her tone showing some amusement as Genna checked her over. That being said, Vivian did her own examination, but she wasn't looking for injuries, better to let the medic handle that. She had noticed that Faith's eyes weren't the right color and she picked up one of her friends hands so that she could look at her fingernails. They were the wrong color as well. Her markings around her wrists and neck were gone as well. Vivian had once been Faith's bodyguard and had been given a briefing on Faith's Blessings, at the time anyway, and what they looked like.

And now, she didn't seem to have any of them.

Vivian's mood shifted slightly, away from just being surprised and happy to see her friend and into a more protective mood. Faith had been the biggest hero that northeastern Idalos may have ever seen, but that also meant she had, directly or indirectly, made life more difficult for every criminal and villain between Scalvoris and Nashaki. She met Genna's eyes and while Vivian's gaze held confusion about how they came to be in the current situation, but there was no indecision or loss of focus in her expression either. "My house is closer, if you'd prefer. But bring out Nayeli before we leave." she said, her tone carrying a tone of forced calm and relaxation. As she spoke, though, she called up her Warden Diri, Fins. A long time ago, Faith had worked out a way for Wardens to communicate silently through their Diri, and she used that to talk to Genna now.

"The Earth Clinic might be too public. If word gets out that Faith's back, but may not have memories and doesn't have her Blessings, there isn't a bad guy in this part of the world that wouldn't try to take her out." Fins said to Nayeli if Genna brought her out, transmitting what Vivian said over her psychic link to her Diri. When they were joined by the custodian, though, Vivian gave him a look that matched his irritation with her own. She did, briefly, consider saying something to stop him as he left to go fetch Gaul, but she ultimately decided against it. "We should go. I'll speak to Gaul tomorrow, if need be. Or if he catches us on the way out. Let me handle things if he does." she said, her tone calm.

The In-Between

Things were becoming more clear.

The platinum-haired woman spoke and Faith looked at her and smiled. "Genna," she said, repeating the word and nodding. A green mist was moving around her, healing her shoulder and Faith considered the question. Was there pain anywhere else? She looked at Genna and shook her head. "I don't think so, no." She didn't know much, not really much of anything at all, but she understood that she knew this woman, that she trusted this woman and this woman was healing her.

Her gaze turned to the other woman, "Vivian," she said, testing the name on her tongue. Again, she felt an instinct, a sense of trust and as Vivian held her hand, Faith watched with interest. It was comforting, being with people she knew and trusted. But then there was a noise - a shout of "OY" and Faith looked around in confusion. She felt nervous, but equally these two women were here and they were safe spaces, Faith knew that.

Genna tied a robe around her and Faith was compliant, although she didn't actively help; it wasn't that she was passive but she didn't recognise what Genna was doing until it was done. It was like, as Genna tied the robe, Faith recognised that it was a robe, that Genna was putting it on her. She smiled, "thank you," she said.

Wherever they took her, Faith went with them. She didn't speak to the man if he came back, but equally, she didn't feel like she couldn't. As they made their way, she asked the question that she felt she had to. "How did I..." no, that wasn't it. She lapsed into silence. Then, a moment later. "That is, what was it that ..." no, no, that wasn't it. Faith sighed slightly, then broke it to it's most basic. "What happened?"

It seemed like the only question she could ask. Looking at them, she spoke softly. "I don't remember ... anything. I know this is a dressing gown, but I didn't know it was until you put it on me. I know I know you, I know I trust you." She shook her head and stopped herself from going off into minutia that might not help.

"What happened?" she repeated. She wanted to ask how she ended up in a pile of leaves at the bottom of a big tree in an arena like place but she figured that it was implicit in the first question.

Genna nodded her head and summoned the dirri. The octopus like dirri gave a soft trumpet as she appeared visible to only those who could see such creatures. Nayeli floated in the air and communicated the transfer of information. Genna hadn’t thought of the situation in that light. Faith did have enemies and her powers were one of the things that had kept them in line, and even then not always. Genna did remember the war of souls. She looked up at Nayeli who looking back said that she didn’t detect any Warden connection with Faith anymore. Faith expressed her appreciation of the robe and Genna smiled. Making mental notes of the behavior. Having spent a while studying the brain now, the higher parts of the brain seemed to be what was missing.

“I think your house would be ideal.” She said aloud in agreement. This also meant taking Faith to her own home would be ill advised. It was then that someone, charged in and told them they couldn’t be here and that were in trouble. Genna had gone to a private girls school and recognized a snitch when she saw one. It took all of her self control to keep her from laughing. In true snitch fashion he was functioning on half the information. Both Genna and Vivian did have permission to be here. The icing on the cake was when he commanded them to stay there while he got the teacher. Genna meet Vivian’s gaze as the other woman dismissed the man and his concerns.

“Come let us taken Shal. He will be faster the walking the streets.” Besides the presence of a large snake following them would stand out. The large serpent didn’t even flick a tongue in response to Faith presence. Genna helped Faith up and made sure she was comfortable situated to make the trip as pleasant as possible. As she and Vivian helped Faith talked and explained her confusion by her half sentences. Genna looked up at her friend. “You have been reborn my dear friend. I don’t know how it was done, but you were dead and now you are back.” Genna said and then climbed up herself. She looked at Vivain to see if she would join them or not. Faith explained her how her mind knew things but didn’t know things. Genna nodded. “It seems that however you were brought back did it in such a way that you can remember basic, stuff needed to survive. Though you seemed to have a block to that knowledge. I suspect when we get you some food you will know how to use a fork. Don’t worry both of us will help you navigate as you learn.”

Genna thinking of Vivian’s warning the young woman said to Faith. “I am going to do something to help you be safer.” and placed sun spot upon Faith against anyone noticing her as they traveled. Genna followed behind as Vivian moved ahead of them. But as they flew Genna talked to Faith. She didn’t ask any questions but just talked about where they were. Partly she was seeing what came back to here and what was something she was relearning. They followed and soon came upon the commanders house. Settling down Genna removed Sunspot on Faith. “This is Vivian’s home. Lets get you inside. Are you hungry?” Genna asked as they went in.
