Re: [Rharne] Fauna

Cerberus

Image
Name: Cerberus

Appearance: A Cerberus always has an extremely large body, as the upper half of the dog must be able to fit three heads comfortably, and the body itself able to fit double the amount of organs. As far as height, weight, and coat color that is entirely dependent on the breeds. A Cerberus has either only female or male reproductive organs.

Description: Cerberus are rumored in Rharne to be the result of a cruel necromancer that has stitched together dog corpses in order to make a fighting machine. Yet, if this were true, the Cerberus' seen today are far from undead: a Cerberus has overall three breeds coexisting in the same large body, and it's existence has prompted medical mystery into it's origin for as long as it's been known. The behavior, and overall personality of the Cerberus is wildly dependent on three breeds that it makes up. Some Cerberus that are made up of friendly, domesticated breeds like Golden Retrievers or German Shepherds can be quite friendly overall, and a Cerberus that has wolf and any of the various hunting breeds will be aggressive.

Yet, out of those three breeds, is the "alpha", which determines the majority of the Cerberus' bodily behavior, and it influences the other two breeds. If a Cerberus is made up of a poodle and chihuahua, but has an alpha of a wolf, the whole Cerberus will be aggressive, and the dominant force of the three. Despite this, most Cerberus are quite large dogs regardless of their breeds, as their body needs to make space for three heads and double the amount of most organs: two hearts, four kidneys, etc. Each head on the body however has it's own separate brain and personality, but the alpha of the three will be the leader of the body and influence the two others. It's uncommon, but certainly possible, for the alpha to change in a Cerberus' lifespan.

A Cerberus is usually domesticated, but some can be found in the wilderness outside Rharne. Despite having a powerful body and three sets of teeth, a Cerberus is typically not found in the military as common as some other creatures, because their organs are so close together and so they are easy to injure and prone to many health complications. While having double the amount of organs might sound well, if a heart dies in the body of a Cerberus, or even a single head, the whole Cerberus will slowly and painfully die. It is possible to save a Cerberus once one head has been killed, but the two remaining breeds would likely be so distraught they would become a shadow of who they were before.

Cerberus are also difficult to train, and not nearly as common as most dog breeds, and so usually they are not useful or desirable pets. The lifespan of the Cerberus is often very short, and most do not live past the age of five arcs due to their health risks, but they do reach full maturity in only two arcs. It is possible that the entire Cerberus is one breed (for example, a Cerberus with three poodle breeds) but it's considered extremely rare and double as expensive as most Cerberus. They're eating habits are also dependent on their breeds, and that being said, many prefer meat. When a Cerberus mates, three breeds from the parent's maximum of six total breeds will be chosen, and typically no Cerberus breed is one hundred percent pure, considering they are mostly mutts.
Frequency: Rare

Re: [Rharne] Fauna

Blitznir
Image
Name:Blitznir

Appearance: Standing at 6ft tall, and weighing around 800lbs, this heavy breed of equine is reminiscent of what one would call a "Unicorn". Its coat is ivory, scales covering all over its body. There are cobalt blue stripes on its legs. Its eyes are red with the same cobalt striping around them. It has an ivory mane that encompasses its face, almost like a beard, and its hooves are gray. The same mane protrudes from its shoulders like a vest.

Description: Found in the Stormlands & Stormwastes, the Blitznir is a mysterious creature. The mystery comes from how these scaled horses deal with mortals. A proud and majestic beast they see most if not all mortals as beneath them and are cautious towards those they encounter. Taming them is far more difficult than one might imagine, as one doesn't choose a Blitznir, a Blitznir chooses its rider.

There are three tests these creatures put a prospective rider through, and to pass two of the three of them will grant the favor of the creature.
1} Perform an act of valor/courage/ or bravery in their presence
2} Fend off against an attack from a Blitznir
3} Endure riding them at top speed for as long as you can {15 minutes at minimum}

Once a prospect has proven worthy, they will be imprinted onto the Blitznir. This imprinting will create a fondness, a bond of some sort between the Blitznir and its rider.

Frequency: Uncommon
Level of Danger: Medium
Special Properties:
- Horn of Lightning: Blitzers can summon lightning bolts from their horn, using them to stun and/or severely burn their opponents even to the point of death. Unlike normal bolts of lightning, they could use them as mild concussive forces.

- Need for Speed: The Blitznir is a very agile horse. It runs at about 60 mph in short bursts, with a 20% reduction in travel time over land on average. It has a natural want for chasing anything it sees in hopes of outrunning it making it one of the fastest land mounts around. With incredible fast twitch muscle fibers & acceleration, it reaches its top speed in only 5 bits. At full gallop, its hooves release tiny thunderclaps.

Additional Information: In order to gain it as a mount, Mod Permission is required and must be done in three threads

Boozehound

Image
Developed by Pig Boy
Price: Tier 3+
Habitat: Inns and Taverns. Domesticated.
Lifespan and Development: Similar to a domestic bull dog.
Diet: Carnivorous, but prefers prepared meals of cheese, meat, and alcohol.
Temperament: Boozehounds are aggressive when they haven't had their meals or alcohol. They are a difficult breed to bring up, as one needs to balance a steady access to alcoholic libations with not getting them outright drunk as they develop. Older boozehounds are prone to senility, due to the way they're fed as they're raised. A shot of whiskey in their beer bowl can help alleviate their mental deficiency however.
Abilities: An ability to drink and get drunk without any discernable detriment to their constitution. They are often used to sniff out contraband drugs and alcohol on shipment, and as such as useful to law enforcement that are on customs duty. They have an uncanny ability to sniff out sources and caches of alcoholic fluids. They're also able to smoke tobacco without deleterious effects upon their health. In fact, feeding them tobacco or just giving them a cigar can improve their mental function considerably, making them amenable to training.
Weaknesses: Not always a weakness, but they are very susceptible to taming by people offering them alcohol. It's rare that a boozehound will not react favorably to being given a bowl of beer.

Mud Hen

Image
Developed by Dandelion
Price: 1 WP
Habitat: Mud Hens nest in burrows in the Stormwastes, using the isolation as an extra protection against predators, and commute to the Stormlands and the Lake to feed
Lifespan and Development: Mud Hens (commonly called such because of their ability to blend in to mud and stone) lay clutches of 5-8 eggs in mid Ashan, hatching 20-22 trials later. The chicks are born with a full covering of yellowish brown down and are cabable of leaving the burrow immediately. They fledge at 15 trials, reach full maturity at an arc old, and live up to 8-10 arcs (15 in captivity). Both parents contribute to raising their chicks, taking turns to fly off to feed while the other remains to care for the chicks. On average, an adult Mud Hen is about 18 inches from beak to tail, and weighs 7-8 pounds. They gather in flocks to feed, but spread out and split up into mated pairs when they return to the nest
Diet: Mud Hens are insectivores, devouring both ground-based and flying insects of all kinds
Temperament: Generally skittish, but will tolerate other species nearby.
Abilities: Mud Hens are naturally resistent to lightning, and well camouflaged against mud and stone, but otherwise have no more abilities than an ordinary bird
Weaknesses: Nesting on and under the ground makes them more vulnerable to what few predators lurk in the Stormwastes

Re: [Rharne] Fauna

Problins

Image
Developed by Pig Boy
Image is Gremlin by kikicianjur on deviantART | Gremlins art, Gremlins, Fantasy monster
Price: Nobody wants them. Maybe 1 wp to get rid of.
Habitat: Anywhere in Rharne where there are people. They're like rats. They tend to appear in more populated areas, however, or places where there is dirt to grow from.
Lifespan and Development: Problins reproduce asexually. Usually this is done in quarrels with others of their kind, where a piece of them is bitten off, and then regenerates where it lies on the ground. The part that is severed from the original creature then grows from dirt like a weed, well disguised as such and indistinguishable by sight from any other plant. Most often they are discovered too late, and their full body is grown from the earth as a sort of root system, but it's an animal.
Diet: These creatures are omnivorous, but also supplement their diet by feeding upon natural emanations of ephemera, usually drawn to negative emotions like wrath, turmoil, jealousy, and others.
Temperament: These creatures enjoy causing chaos and misery to living creatures, taking special delight in upsetting sentient creatures and people. While their attacks are rarely anything more than an inconvenience, they have been known to cause minor injuries and discomfort. With the pulling of hair, stomping on feet, and causing minor scares to people. They enjoy causing property damage especially, and have been known to wreck gardens, houses, and all manner of things that are otherwise orderly-kept.
Abilities:
Ability 1 ~ Can feed on ephemera of spirits born from negative emotion. This grants them rapid healing and regeneration.
Ability 2 ~ They can sense negative emotion of sentient creatures, and seek them out.
Weaknesses:
Weakness 1 ~ They dislike sunlight and fire. They're not particularly vulnerable to it, but will actively avoid them. Burning in fire can prevent them from regenerating. They also react violently to being doused with alcohol.
Weakness 2 ~ They are physically weak, and rarely pose much more than a minor danger or inconvenience, even in large numbers.

IF using in graft/becoming/alchemy/animal training the problin, consult with a local moderator. These will have extra requirements and effects beyond what is listed here.

Re: [Rharne] Fauna

Peaphoenix

Image
Developed by Kalortah
Price: Tier 7 (7 WP)
Habitat: Stormlands, around the Mistral Woods and the River Zynyx. They tend to stick to a particular nesting area, often decorating their nests with all manner of beautiful leaves, flowers, and sometimes feathers. When owned/handled by a person, they will tend to prefer free reign, but also enjoy the relative safety of cages. They can be trained to keep to particular areas if the handler wishes.
Lifespan and Development: Like most phoenixes, they don't reproduce sexually, but rather at the end of their life cycle of about 5 arcs, will shed their physical form, reducing to a pile of ashes. From the ashes, they will produce several copies of themselves, with a few deviations from the norm in terms of coloration. At the chick/young stage they are about 6 inches in length/height. At 3 years they stop growing, and tend to be the size of a small peacock. Living in captivity, depending on the skill of the caregiver can extend the Peaphoenix's lifespan. To the point where it will double its lifespan of five arcs to ten arcs. Its lifespan can be further lengthened by pruning its tail feathers, which are tied to its self-immolation at the end of its life cycle.
Diet: Omnivorous insectovores, but peculiarly given their aversion to water, they absolutely adore the taste of fish, so long as it has been deboned before-hand.
Temperament: Gentle yet skittish. It takes training to tame the Peaphoenix to the point where it will tolerate humanoid company, or other animals. They are capable of forming bonds with one other bird, and often will pair with a 'mate' in order to ensure their survival. Usually, a human handler or owner can provide a surrogate for this 'bond-mate' instinct. They will often prefer the attention and company of their bond-mate, whether an owner or another bird, to the exclusion of all others.

They are not strictly territorial, and willingly share their space with other birds, often flocking with different breeds for safety. However they tend to be aloof, and will not form easy friendships with anyone other than their 'bond-mate'.

The bond-mate is simply the one they share the most affection with, and can be trained to follow basic commands and social cues from this mate. Often, when they are born with a person present at their birth, they will bond to that person. This bond can be transferred to another, if they carefully prune one of the feathers of the peaphoenix and gift it to the one they intend to transfer the bond to. Somehow this seems to work.
Abilities: Emits a regulated electrical current that doesn't cause shock when it comes into contact with a person's skin. The effect is a series of sparks and lightning-shaped tendrils which fly all about its beautiful, multi-colored plumage. The Peaphoenix prefers to walk on the ground, but are excellent fliers, nearly hovering as they emit their lightning sparks as they go. They have incredible regenerative abilities that are only dampened by exposure to water.
Weaknesses: Peaphoenixes don't like the water and will actively avoid it. They wither into nothing but a mass of feathers if they are submerged into it. Their lightning-aura gives them away to potential predators.

Re: [Rharne] Fauna

Magnahowl Terrier

Image
Developed by Pig Boy
Price: Tier 3+
Habitat: Fully domesticated, sometimes a stray might be found.
Lifespan and Development: Similar to a small domestic dog.
Diet: Carnivore.
Temperament: Magnahowl dogs are naturally mean tempered, as many terrier breeds tend to be. However, their bark is far worse than their bite. Known more for their ability to broadcast their howling and vocalizations for miles around, they are rarely kept in the city, as they are seen as something of a nuisance in busy neighborhoods, unless one can train them to give alarm only under preferred circumstances (break-ins, etc.). They can be trained to be suitable family pets, however, and with advanced training can even be taught to control the pitch and volume of their voice, so that it doesn’t break any windows.
Abilities: An ability to vocalize extremely loudly and with varying pitches. They can fool many a predator that a larger animal is chasing them, at least until they catch sight of the small terrier at their heel. While their vocalization can in fact sound for a mile or two, it’s usually only under deadly circumstances that they’ll use their full volume.

Otherwise, they’re fairly similar to many other small dog breeds out there in capability and utility.
Weaknesses: It’s rare that one will be able to sneak up on you. They tend to announce themselves before you ever see them.

Re: [Rharne] Fauna

Quacian Bloodhound

Image
Price: Tier 6+ (or 2wp)
Habitat: The Quacian countryside and the Baronies, but also considered a luxury pet by the wealthy who can afford to keep an animal fed. Now transplanted to Desnind and also Rharne to a lesser extent.
Description: A dog with a keen sense of smell, that can trace the scent of blood for miles. It will alert violently at creatures that don't have proper blood flow, such as tunawa, Naer, Yludih, and Creepborne if they come near a bonded human.
History: While hounds and other hunting canines have been constant companions to the people of Quacia since before the Cataclysm, it wasn't until well after the rise of the Theocratum, that the Quacian Bloodhound began to emerge as a distinct breed. Trained to sniff out those who lacked proper blood flow, and thus any creepborne changelings, the dog became an important fixture in Quacian life. Breeders of the Quacian Bloodhound are in high demand among those traveling abroad, as they may warn their masters against venturing into a Creep-infected patch of wilderness.

The Theocratum has a mixed reaction to the beasts. Some are threatened by the dog's keen sense of blood tracking and fear it might interfere with the selection process of blood sacrifices, while others believe it is blessed by the Wounded God, a gift to help his people against the ever-encroaching Creep.

Several specimens and breeding stables have relocated to Desnind and Rharne, in the wake of the mass exodus from Quacia.
Lifespan and Development: Similar to a domestic blood hound.
Diet: Carnivorous, of particular interest to the dog's appetite are bones and bone meal. Some talented butchers can make a good living arranging a special dog feed that keeps them well fed with less loss of useable meat, by combining the meat with bonemeal. Quacian Bloodhounds thrive on a steady diet of meat and bonemeal.
Temperament: Protective of their bonded humans, and fiercely loyal. They make great hunting companions or guard dogs. They do not tolerate Yludih, Naer, tunawa, or any changelings, however.
Abilities: The ability to sniff out and alert at the presence of changelings, tunawa, and yludih, basically any moving creature that lacks silver or red blood. Otherwise, the typical specimen has a very keen sense of smell that it can make its way by, but is quite blind. The Quacian Bloodhound is a sturdy breed with above-average endurance and strength for any other dog their size. They can be easily trained to react in different ways to certain blood-types and those who lack bloodflow. For instance, instead of alerting as their natural inclination may be, certain prized trained beasts will lead the way away from these bloodless aberrations.

High (almost master) level of detection once fully grown; with extreme sense of smell. Great stamina—they can track for long periods of time. Can also track unique individuals through both scents on the ground and in the air. Can recognize trails that have been traveled. Can sense scents up to 300 hours old, and track a trail up to 150 miles. Their range for scents is around a quarter-mile.
Weaknesses: Can be very trusting of mortals, like many domestic breeds. Varies per specimen, though.

Re: [Rharne] Fauna

Barghest

Name: Barghest
Image
Quick Facts: Massive, reptilian hounds. Both wild and domestic, wild ones are pack animals
Height: 36-40 inches at the shoulder
Width: 16-18 inches
Length: 48-52 inches
Weight: 150-180 pounds (180 pound Barghest is really fat)
Native to: Originally from the Central Imperial Region
Locations: Domestic Barghests can be found all over the empire and where Imperial soldiers are located, occasionally in other cities, but rare. Wild ones can be found in the Central, Eastern, and Southern regions.

Appearance: Barghests are large, scaly reptiles that closely resemble a large dog in appearance, but with some key differences. They have spiky backs and hard sides. Sharp talons and fangs give them a nasty offensive arsenal, but a soft underbelly gives them a noticeable vulnerability. With such small eyes, they rely more on scent and hearing to navigate.

Habitat: Barghests prefer rocky fields and forests to live in in the wild, but they're an adaptable species and can adjust quite well to urban or sub-urban environments if they're domesticated.

Lifespan and Development: Barghests are hatched from solid eggs and take two Arcs to fully mature. They can live for up to twelve Arcs before dying of old age.

Diet: Barghests are obligate carnivores. They can eat fruit and vegetables, but they don't gain any real nutritional value from, and have to consume meat regularly. They have a particular fondness for deer and elk meat.

Temperament: Barghests can be pretty calm and relaxed, even the wild ones don't get violent just because someone crossed their path. But they are territorial, if they feel like their home or pack/family has been threatened, they will do their very best to tear the offender to shreds. They can also be trained as war beasts, and it's not uncommon to see them fighting alongside the legions, akin to the wolves of the scouts, but far less intelligent.

Abilities: Barghest hides are incredibly tough, barring the softer underbellies. Lighter blades and spears will be unable to penetrate their scales, and even heavier weapons and blows don't do as much damage as they might. For this reason, the scales of dead Barghests are sometimes worked into a light armor.

Re: [Rharne] Fauna - Emberwing

Vino Slime
Image
Developed by Pig Boy
Price: N/A
Habitat: Sewers and darkened, ill-tended wine cellars.
Lifespan and Development: This alcohol-based slime reproduces via fragmentation (asexual reproduction). A piece of the slime, when broken off whether because it's grown large enough (roughly 20 liters of slime before it fragments) or has been damaged by steel weapons.
