I owe you an apology.

I was startled when I saw you.

I had, in truth, fled to Viden from Scalv-Town when I heard of Yeva's death. Little did I know, she is now very much alive, and so it seems my hasty retreat was somewhat premature.

I ran from you because seeing you reminded me of our shared times with Yeva, and the pain that accompanied such memories was too much to bear.

I have since been reunited with her, and she has explained all that has happened.

In truth, my head is still spinning, and I am certainly in shock, but my overwhelming feeling is a sense of relief.

I feel a fool. I hope you will be open to forgiving me, and we can put this misunderstanding behind us. And I hope the next time you see me, I will be less inclined to leave without warning!

Arriving in an unmarked brown envelope, Balthazar will find a wooden hoop containing a colorful depiction of an embroidered volcanic eruption in the cross-stitch style. Those who touch the stitches will experience memories not quite their own. Images of smoke and swinging lanterns, the sounds of running and echoed cries somewhere very dark. A first-hand view of being suspended over lava. Blood. Heat.

Some memories will feel familiar to Balthazar, like a shared dream.

There is no signature and no name. Along with the magic threading, a small scrap of parchment kept simple with only two letters. Addressed to FB. It reads 'again' and in the bottom of the parcel, almost missed, is a single, unlit matchstick. A calling card.

Dear Balthazar,

Thank you for your letters. We are overdue for a catchup. Perhaps the next one might be in person, if circumstances allow?

You are quite right that there have been questions raised about you in recent times. I wasn't sure what to make of the rumours, but slaving has never been something I've suspected you of. You will recall, of course, the ship of kidnapped children that we rescued together. Actions speak louder than accusations, in my opinion.

Even so, I was troubled to hear of your arrest - and of Elisabeth's even more so - but I am relieved to learn that you both appear to be in better spirits now that you are back on Faldrass.

This island certainly seems to play with dreams - I have had strange ones, too!

Your research sounds interesting. I will be keen to hear of your learnings.

And I will keep an eye out for grey trees and flaming tigers! Fortunately, we have found a tree called charwood, which has a barkcthat doesn't burn. We have used it in our construction - a fortuitous choice, it seems!

Keep in touch, and pass on my regards to Elisabeth. Please reassure her that I try to avoid running over women in the street whenever possible! Let me know if you ever plan to make it out this way. Perhaps we could compare notes.

First and foremost, I love you...and miss you. I hope you are well.

Straight to the point - Saoire came calling and we had a chat. She has made Haven an offer that I believe warrants serious consideration. She is willing to pick up the settlement and move it to another location. I believe that it's in Haven's best interests to accept the offer for we are far too isolated currently. There are ways to ease that isolation, yes, but none are viable in the short-run. I wasn't aware that the Gardens are owned privately, and while we never intended to grow into them, the realization that we are flanked on three sides by areas that won't allow for growth is concerning.

The place I am considering is a bit north of the Sentry, on the east coast of Faldrass. It would be situated similarly to where we are now with beach and land.

I don't want to leave here. My heart is a bit broken by the fact because this odd piece of beach has become a part of what I consider home, and I've never had one of those before. However, the settlement needs something different, I feel. They've been isolated and I think getting on the other side of the Badlands, with access to the main ferry and potentially Hopetoun will be good for their mental well-being as well. A place that we can truly settle into instead of feeling restricted.

I will be informing the settlers of the offer shortly, so I can hear their thoughts on the matter. As always, I'd love to know yours.

We are well, my love. There is nothing to worry about. Storm, as predicted, is taking excellent care of all of us. Well, as long as we provide him with the appropriate amounts of attention. Large amounts of fish bits are required too.

Thank you for your reply and insights. I am grateful each trial for you, and while I might wish for you to be here right now, reading your words brought a smile to my face.

The decision to move Haven is clear. There were a few people that voted to stay. I've done as Saoire asked, marking the map with our preferred location. It's just a matter of time now, and I'll make sure to send you a note when it happens as I'm unsure when you are planning to come back.

One of these trials, we should find a place to escape for a few trials? Just you and me. I don't care where.

Balthazar,

You are sticking your nose into matters that don’t concern you, you're being a voice of change and we are warning you now. Stop. By your hand, and the hands of others, Scalvoris is becoming something it has never been and was never intended to be. It’s unnatural and against everything in the old writings.

This abomination cannot continue. Do not disregard this letter or the intent behind it or you - and those you hold most dear - will pay the price.

We are watching. We are everywhere. We will act, without hesitation. Do not cross us.
