[Fauna] - Lignun Serpere (Ready for Review)

Name: Lignun Serpere
Image
Quick Facts: Vicious, territorial, poisonous bite.
Height: up to 2 feet, depending on the size of the creature converted.
Width: up to 3 feet, depending on the size of the creature converted.
Length: Up to 8 feet, depending on the size of the creature converted.
Weight: 250-400 pounds, depending on the size of the creature converted.
Native to: Desnind and the surrounding forests.
Locations: Confined to Southern Idalos.

Appearance: From the waist up, this creature looks like a withered and desiccated versions of the creatures that suffer from the bite of the Lignun. From the waist down, the Lignus closely resembles that of an aged tree. Thick links of bark run down the legs of this creature which make them resemble tree limbs. The thickness of which is determined by the creature that is consumed and transformed into the Lignun. The bark is hardened, but malleable enough for the Lignun to crawl about.

Habitat: The forested areas of Desnind and the surrounding areas are where the Lignun calls home. They prefer the warmer to hotter climates of the temperate forested lands. It can not survive in areas without trees. Scientist are unsure as to why.

Lifespan and Development: These creatures are not born. New ones are simply converted by the poison in the bites of already established Lignun's. The only notable change as these creatures grow older is the concentrations of the venom inside of their saliva. This is the only known natural cause of their death as well. The concentrations of the venom becomes so strong the creature's mouth and throat eventually dissolve, thus eliminating any way for the Lignun to eat, which leads to a slow and painful death by starvation. This usually takes around five to six arcs to begin, but once this process has started it only takes two cycles before the venom reaches deadly levels.

Otherwise these creatures are hunted for the poison sacs which can be rendered down into a paralytic poison used by assassins and medical professionals alike. The poison derived from the Lignun is not a permanent paralysis, just a temporary one, but is rather useful during surgeries or interrogations, depending upon the professional using it.

Diet: Carnivorous and cannibalistic.

Temperament: Vicious and territorial. Will hunt down other Lignun that encroach on their territory, as well as stalk and hunt any others it might deem as food.

Abilities: Take Root: The bite of the Lignun is dangerous, but the poison in its saliva is worse. Untreated, the victim of an unfortunate bite starts to develop a skin irritation, in which the skin slowly hardens and begins to resemble chunks of tree bark. As the disease progresses, the hardening will spread to both legs and up to the hips, effectively turning the legs of the infected into two tree limbs/roots as that is what it most closely resembles. Once it reaches this stage there is no known cure.

Additional notes: The venom has only been discovered to be used as a paralytic, but there are additional possibilities yet to be discovered. It is also unknown where the first of the Lignun came from. Rumors speculate it was a failed science experiment, others claim that the first one came from some other creature that was corrupted by ether.

I am sorry it has taken so long for anyone to look at this. This is a very interesting creature concept. First and foremost, any of my feedback can be overridden by the the Desnind Prophet (whom I will send this way to check this out). But without any further delay, here we go.

"Thick links of bark run down the legs of this creature which make them resemble tree limbs.": So does the creature actually have legs and they just have the coloration, texture, and appearance of wood? Or does it physically turn into wood/lumber?

"The forested areas of Desnind and the surrounding areas are where the Lignun calls home. They prefer the warmer to hotter climates of the temperate forested lands. It can not survive in areas without trees. Scientist are unsure as to why.": Are they elsewhere within the world as long as it is hot/warm and has trees? Or is it just around Desnind?

"Lifespan and Development": How long does it take for the change to take effect? Is there a way to counteract the change? What other changes take place within the body? Can any creature be turned into a Lignun? Squirrels, Deer, Bear, Humans, etc? How many Lignun exist at any given time?

I believe these are the only questions I have at this point. I will nudge this towards the Desnind Prophets. Good work!

Re: Lignun Serpere (Ready for Review)

This made my skin crawl at first glance.

I would say just change it to say: "Believed to be confined to Southern Idalos" and we've got a winner!
The very fact that scientists don't know yet why the Lingun can't survive out of forested areas puts its origins enough in question to allow the possibility of them cropping up in places like Athart's Crescent Peninsula, and maybe one of the few greenbelts in the Hotlands.

We have enough mysterious Tree-related oddities to possibly account for it.
But I like it left unknown. 8-)

Re: [Fauna] - Lignun Serpere (Ready for Review)

I have to say I do love the idea of half-tree zombies. Sounds like a winner to me.

The one question I have is this.
Kesindir wrote: Mon Jan 28, 2019 4:14 pm Diet: Carnivorous and cannibalistic.

Temperament: Vicious and territorial. Will hunt down other Lignun that encroach on their territory, as well as stalk and hunt any others it might deem as food.
When a Lignun Serpere hunts down and devours another of its kind does it only head the top half? Or does it also devour the tree-like bottom half? If so does this creature also possess the ability to eat and digest wood?

Otherwise I'm very happy with this work. If you could make minor edits to adjust to the feedback given by Prongs, Malt and myself I'm happy to give this my stamp of approval. I am trying to clean up this forum a bit, so if you could make these edits sometime in the next 2 weeks that would be splendid, or PM me if this is not possible. Otherwise I hope you won't object if I finish this piece for you.

Thank You

Hello, I'm not sure what Trouble's plans were to finish this, so I'll hold off on assuming whatever that might have been. Kesinder, if you return feel free to bring this back up for approval, but until then I'm moving it to unfinished. Thanks!
