Of course a trip to the market or being out and about wouldn't be a complete errand without fetching some food for his little pet, the bullfrog, Earnest. He'd gathered a few worms from a local fisherman's bait shop for just that purpose, along with some fish guts. Of course he himself went hungry that night since the scrolls, cheap as they were, had drained the remainder of his allotted funds for that purpose. He had his priorities straight, one could at least be certain.

He threw open the door after hitching the donkey to its stall next to the house. There, he fluffed the hay and made sure the draft wasn't too bad before patting the donkey on the head and removing his gear and the luggage.

From there, Ludovico carried the large trunk full of 'magic scrolls' into the house himself. With a loud crash, after shouldering his way through the side door into the study he kept, he plopped the trunk down on the ground. Earnest was on his desk, croaking and bill-a-bobbing its peculiar song for him. Clearly waiting for one of two things, food or a fresh female bullfrog to romance. Unluckily for Earnest, Ludovico had only the former for his little 'familiar'.

He held the worms above Earnest's head, and watched as his tongue snapped out to snatch the food from his own hands. Then he scattered a bunch of them on the desk to busy Earnest, while the rabbit cadouri investigated his acquisition.

The scrolls looked special, each sealed shut with a hard wax tab. Then he realized the merchant had never explained how to activate the scrolls' magic. Perhaps it was as simple as reading the, or it would activate upon an open seal.

Just to be on the safe side, Ludovico held the scroll faced away from him while breaking the seal open. Shuttering his eyes against a potential expulsion of arcane force, he opened one eye to confirm that nothing magical had happened. Yet.

Then he turned the scroll around, and marveled at the inscriptions and drawings on the page. Some of them were just diagram-like drawings and graphs. Others were words he could almost recognize. He read the words, recognizing them as ancient in style, yet something was off. It was then he realized they were written in a common mock up of the ancient language. Sounding like ancient in accent, but really just common words mispelt or pronounced. In a dialect best described as 'pig ancient'.

Ludovico furrowed his brow as he read through the passages, and how they related to the diagrams. "Hmmm, mystery magic eh? I wonder how I activate them? Probably by an utterance of the p...pages..."

Licking his muzzle, he held the page open. He wasn't about to waste this opportunity to do something that would preserve the potential magics of the page. So what he did next, was open up his own large tome of notes and research into the nature of arcana, and his observations of such.

Once he'd done that, he took out his quill and inkpot, and dipped the pen inside the ink to gather some of the stuff, and began tracing the magical incantations and diagrams onto his own book.

This took the better part of a few bits, but by half a break he'd managed a good fascimile of the spell. This done, he first sought to read off of his own page, to test whether the words and drawings alone were enough to invoke the magical potential of the scroll. He read the incantation of pig ancient, to little or no effect.

Furrowing his brow, he checked and cross referenced the page with the inscriptions on the scroll. They looked pretty faithful to the original! What had he neglected, or was the magic in the ink that it was written in? Did he need to hold the scroll while reciting it?

He tried this, and a small chime sounded somewhere in the cabin. He ignored this, dismissing it as a wind noise or settling of the cabin in the cold weather. Yet, when he went to consult his book again, he held the edge of the paper, and nearly sliced his finger open. The page was as sharp, solid, and brittle as glass! "W...what!?" Ludovico panicked.

He sucked on the finger that had bled, and checked the page that he'd written on. It was indeed now made of glass. He flipped it over on the binding, and tried to test the other pages. To his relief, the entire book had not been turned into glass. Just that one page he'd inscribed with the special drawings and words. Interesting... The rabbit smirked at the cleverness of the magic, albeit acknowledging that it didn't appear very useful, or anything other than just random and silly.

Still, turning something into glass seemed like it could find use. But when he went to copy the drawings and inscriptions onto another object, he found the scroll disintegrating right in his hands, into glassy dust or silica of a sort. The sandy remains of the scroll fell to the floor, as Earnest croaked at Ludovico, begging for more fish guts or worms.

Grumbling to himself, and ruing the loss of a glass page on his favorite blank tome, he fetched a few more morsels from his pocket, to give to the big frog.

"W..well." Ludovico's tone was crestfallen, as his eyes fell to the ground. "There's more scrolls where that came from. Let's have another try... tomorrow? Eh Earnest?"

The bullfrog bill-a-bobbed its special song, as it munched on the fish guts and worms offered to it, while Ludovico placed the trunk in a safe place for the night, while leaving the page open on the glassy parchment.

He'd wring some kind of value out of that trunk, come what may!
