Jasper had always enjoyed the forest. It was a treasure trove of stuff and activities. For a boy with a love being active and playing pranks the forest supplied both. And as a young man who still loved to be active and felt a connection to the natural world Jasper still loved the forest. In this case he had found a tree that was perfect for working his muscles. With a branch that hung at just a perfect height. He could pull himself up repeatedly. Jasper had discovered exercising when he had moved to the capital. No forests, well not real ones, not were to just burn off energy. So he discovered exercising and to this trial still used it to burn off extra energy and keep himself healthy.

So it was that he had discovered this tree, between the branch at a perfect height, and the cleared space under it and the fact that it was a perfect climbing tree. Well Jasper had memorized the short trail to and from it, and at this point was now hanging from the branch with his legs up as he pulled himself up and down. While he was doing this he heard Eldloga ask, “I have been meaning to ask why are you doing this.” He asked in Jasper’s head.

“It helps my ….. muscles grow stronger.” Jasper though back into between pull ups.

“Interesting.” Eldloga said but Jasper could tell that the conversation wasn’t done. So he lowered his legs and stood back on them as he ended his pull ups. “So I was thinking you should grow closer to fire.”

Jasper stood with his hands on his hips breathing deeply though back, “How?”

“I don’t know.” There was a pause and Jasper could tell that the spirt was still thinking. “It can just be fire, but needs to be something connected to fire begin productive, useful, civilized.”

“Well I could learn to juggle fire.” Jasper said throwing that idea out. He remembered seeing one when he was younger.

“Juggle Fire?” Edloga asked. Jasper paused, and then reached down and picked up a could peddles. He attempted to juggle the two rocks so Eldloga could see.

“So you toss something back and forth is juggling.” Eldloga said.

“When you have someone who can do it well it is impressive, and someone who can do it really well can almost dance while doing it.” Jasper said. “Good jugglers can keep a number of items from falling to the ground.”

“And the fire part.” Eldloga asked.

“Well usually they hold two stick with fire on each end and juggle them. It appears like the person is wreathed in flame.” Jasper explained.

“With your ability to manipulate flame you might be able to actually hold the fire.” Eldloga said.

“Maybe, but I would want to be much better at juggling then I am now before I would do that.” He paused. “And practice using my ability more.”

“Oh course fire must be used responsibly.” Eldloga said, and Jasper felt the spirit pull itself back into itself. It’s embodiment lived in the aspergillum Jasper wore around with him, but there was a differences between when it was involved with him and withdrawn. The young Aesir was aware that he had just been commanded to learn to fire juggle. He looked at the two rocks in his hands and drew his brows together. Well it would be something active to do.

Jasper first tried to juggle the two stones from one hand to the other, and after a few moments stopped it as it didn’t seem to be working. He was struggling to catch the stone on its way down and stopping to pick up the stone was getting annoying. So catching was something he needed to practices, but not like a ball being thrown from someone else. The distance was much greater so there was more response time. So Jasper instead actually put a rock in each hand and began to toss them up and down. It sounded easy in his head, but was proving to be more difficult then he had first thought.

Jasper stopped and did just one hand. That was easier and he didn’t have as much trouble, then he moved to the other hand and he did discover it was harder, but not much. He then moved to trying both again. Yes the split attention was what made it difficult. Jasper continued to practice doing that simple routine as he stood in the forest. While he was standing there practicing he saw two fairies approach him. He recognized one as Bluerasp, with the light blue to dark blue wings. Jasper didn’t recognize the other Fairy but he still paused and waved to the two of them before starting again. Bluerasp waved and the two came and settled on the branch. It was a bit odd to do this with someone watching Jasper thought as he continued for a few moments.

“You are weird.” Bluerasp said. “Why are you doing that?”

“Mortals are silly.” The other Fairy said.

“I am practicing juggling.” Jasper said. He was aware that what he was doing most likely looked very silly so he just grinned at them as he continued. “Do you want to try.”

“What is juggling?” Bluerasp asked even as the other one said.

“I am sure I can do it better then you.” The new fair said and picked up two rocks and tried to toss and catch them. Jasper hid a grin as the fairy only caught one. He turned back to focusing on his own juggling practice even as the Fairies tried to one up him by trying to do it better. It wasn’t much longer before Jasper could tell he was getting tired as he was dropping the rocks more and more often. Setting the rocks down Jasper looked at the Fairies and continued to encourage them as practiced. The young Aesir still found the fairies and interesting study. They were clearly spirits of some sort, he wasn’t exactly sure if they were Anoks or Dirri, he was fairly sure that they weren’t Induks though.

Until then Jasper felt it was best to try and get on the good sides of these creatures. His expeditions into the forest had shown him that the Fairies where fairly common in this place. The whole forest felt different from his own native forest. There was a wildness and in all honesty a nastiness about it that could make its darker recess fairly foreboding. This place clearly had its risk, but could be dangerous but wasn’t as foreboding.

Eventually the Fairies grew tired of learning to juggle and flew away. It was while Jasper was watching them run away that he heard a voice from the ground at his feet. Dasjat stood about up to Jasper thigh and was watching the Fairies flying away. “You were here longer then normal.” The Tuwana said. Jasper smiled down at his Tuwana friend.

“Was I.” He looked around. “Hmm your right.” He knelt down and allowed Dasjat to climb up on his shoulders.

“So discover anything interesting.” The Tuwana asked.

“Just learning.” Jasper answered back. “Though Eldloga wants me to learn to juggle fire.”

“Really?”

“I think its not so much the juggling, but doing something that helps me understand master over fire.” Jasper said. “Eldloga is a very specific fire spirit. His focus is on how fire builds up civilization and can give as well as take.”

The Tuwana nodded his head as he secured his spot on Jasper’s shoulder. The two walked back towards the settlement. The Tuwana looked around the forest and buried his fingers into Jasper’s hair as he stepped over a exposed root to keep from rocking to much. “Have you ever thought about moving into forest itself.”

Jasper paused at the question and looked around. “No not really.” Jasper said. “It would be possible to place tents among the trees but only in small groups.”

“No, No in the tree.” Dasjat said. Jasper looked up into the trees. “Make portable tree homes.”

“Interesting idea.” Jasper said thinking for a long moment. “It would allow people to move around the forest and not just be stuck in Fool’s Errand.” Jasper then began to walk back. “I think it is an idea to bring up, but I think once we have been here for a while bring it up. Or maybe see about crafting something for us and if the others are interested.” Jasper found it interesting idea but he also knew that he needed to talk with the other members of the clan. So Jasper made his way out of the forest and headed towards home.

Notes:
I'm not entirely sure if I've ever reviewed a Jasper thread before so I was excited when I claimed this one! Jasper is an interesting guy that clearly has embraced his Melrathi upbringing.

This could have been a straightforward training grind but what I love about gifted writers is their ability to turn it into something much more. It's a skill I'm personally still working on so I enjoyed reading your take on the same skill.

Not only did you elevate the solo, the inclusion of the spirit and fairies as npcs was a lovely touch. I enjoyed how you keyed in on their curious nature. I've always assumed that a lot of the things humans do confuse them and you wrote that part beautifully.

Great writing! Enjoy your rewards!

P.S. One little thing - I did find the script the solo was written in a bit hard to read. It could be just a 'me' thing, but I wanted to let you know. =-)
