Arc 722, 23rd of Saun
Thunk.
A small cloud of earth, dust, and clay leapt up into the air the brown and grey specks didn't get far before they drifted away and vanished, never to be seen again.
Thunk. Thunk.
Two more bricks were laid down upon the growing stack that rested in the warmth of Saun's two suns.
Darius had been walking past the kiln on his way to somewhere else, but his sense of curiosity urged him to pause for a few moments. He stood back, not wanting to get in the way of the three settlers who now worked at the small structure outside of Hopetoun. He watched as they methodically built the settlement's brick supply, wetting clay and then adding sand to it, before pressing it into wooden moulds and setting the newly shaped bricks aside to be dried in the sunlight, waiting to be added to the kiln once they had dried. Another pile of bricks, which looked much drier and were therefore presumably several trials' older, were being stacked up inside the kiln.
There was an art to it, Darius decided. He had played his part in the kiln's construction, so he felt a sense of satisfaction in seeing it being put to such effective use. Seeing the bricks themselves getting moulded and readied for the firing of the kiln was just as rewarding.
"It's comin' along, I reckon," came a familiar voice.
Darius turned to see Jarad standing next to him. The builder was a large man, dwarfing Hopetoun's leader, so quite how he had arrived unnoticed was something of a mystery.
"Aye," Darius nodded in agreement. "I'm surprised how many bricks there are already."
Jarad stepped forward and picked up a brick from the pile, and handed it to the blond Scalvorian.
"They're good quality, too," Jarad said of the building blocks. "The shale really 'elps. Lars did a good job findin' this place."
"Aye, he did," Darius concurred.
"Well, I better 'elp them," Jarad said, and, after taking back the brick and returning it to the stack, he joined the settlers in their work.
Nodding, Darius left the group to their task and continued on his way.
