CYLUS 718 | KINGDOM UPDATES & EVENTS
weather
When the sun sets on the last day of Zi'da, the real cold sets in, dark and heavy. Please remember there is NO SUN for the entire season of Cylus—every break of every trial is in the darkness of night, under the cycles of the moons and the faithful light of the stars.

[color=#0000ff

Player Notes]
The weather below is more or less for Andaris, with regions south of the capitol having slightly milder weather and temperatures. To the north, the temperatures are colder, the snow is deeper, and the weather is much harsher. To the west, the weather is wetter, with more snow and ice storms, and to the east, the weather is generally milder, especially in the Eastern Settlements.

Trials 1-3]
Image
The first few days of darkness descend with very heavy snow on the 1st, blanketing the season of darkness in thick white that climbs almost to a normal man's knees. The wind is a light breeze that can be felt on faces with a bite, but the snow is so heavy that visibility is terrible and travel is next to impossible for trials afterward because of the deep snow. Shoveling out of the snow on the 3rd is done by moonlight, at least.

[color=#5e565b

4-8]
Image
The clouds clear but the wind picks up, swaying trees dangerously and making it difficult to walk against the wind without having your breath stolen from your lungs. The 5th of Cylus is a particularly windy day, stripping tiles from poorly cared for roofs and breaking snow-laden branches in the countryside. Buildings are damaged. The temperatures are so cold that deaths are reported across the Kingdom and livestock is especially at risk. The next few trials are overcast with dustings of snow everywhere, promising more.

[color=#5e565b

9&10]
Image
Another blizzard hits hard between Cylus 9-10, sweeping from the frigid north across the whole Kingdom, burying it in more snow than its seen in arcs. Much of Andaris comes to a complete standstill, with folks trapped in their homes in the frozen, wintery darkness. Only the far north is used to such extreme weather and life there carries on as usual, but everywhere else animals and people suffer from an inability to travel, let alone carry out every day tasks in town.

[color=#5e565b

11-15]
Image
Overcast with a mix of snow and frozen rain for a few more trials, everyone must dig themselves out of the thick snow in frigid temperatures and biting wind. Because of the darkness, the temperatures are at their lowest the whole season during these trials, and after the blizzard, there is a huge risk of death and illness that sweeps the poorer parts of Andaris such as Lowtown but also elsewhere across the Kingdom.

[color=#5e565b

16-20]
Image
Finally a relief from the snow and clouds, these trials are filled with stars and calmer winds. The frozen rain from trials before has made travel treacherous, as thin layers of ice cover the thick snow and even cleared areas. Temperatures are still at their coldest, and being outside for prolonged periods of time in the frigid temperatures is dangerous for children, elderly, and those who aren't from Gawyne.

[color=#5e565b

21-23]
Image
Just when everyone feels as though things are getting back to normal, waiting for the sun to return in Ashan, another heavy snowfall sweeps from the north again, bringing with it overcast skies and near hurricane-force winds on the 23rd of Cylus. Icy, previously wind-rocked trees break and fall, buildings are damaged, ships struggle at sea, and life is generally miserable for a whole trial and a half. Though the snow total is less than the 10th, it is still significant and requires much effort to dig out of.

[color=#5e565b

24-25]
Image
As if the snow wasn't enough, the 25th of Cylus brings frozen rain and a coating of ice over everything, making the west and Andaris particularly dangerous. The south is simply pelted with rain and covered in fog, melting some snow, but refreezing in the frigid temperatures that follow the precipitation. Everything sparkles majestically under the moonlight, but transportation and travel are very dangerous for a few trials while everyone cleans up again. Because of the foul weather all Cylus, food shortages and firewood shortages cause a number of deaths and cold-related injuries, especially with folk hunting or traveling out of desperation for food.

[color=#5e565b

26-30]
Image
Finally, the end of the season brings a sweet relief. Skies begin to clear after a few more flurries and the last of Cylus is celebrated under sparkling stars with the promise of warmer temperatures and a sunrise that will begin Ashan.
cylus 718 events
DATE EVENT EVENT DETAILS
1st Rynmere University Day Non-Moderated Open Impact Opportunity — Rynmere University runs an open day to drive new students. Whilst not widespread knowledge, the university is experiencing some financial troubles since the most unfortunate expedition in 717 that saw some board members withdraw their funding and support, and this situation is in contrast to the continued successes of the educational facilities in both Viden and Scalvoris. This event is somewhat hampered by the heavy snows that begin in the late afternoon of the 1st and continue until early on the 2nd.
5th Public Mage Execution Moderated Open Impact EVENT — While mage executions in public occur on a regular basis throughout Cylus both in Andaris and across Rynmere, sometimes without the necessary merit in smaller, isolated towns caught up in the wildfire of fear and suspicion, this particular execution is marked by the first public protest of many. This will prompt the VII to put out an offer of refuge to mages wishing to join them. underground word of mouth. The burning however is not entirely favoured by all citizens. Students will hold peaceful protests lead by a professor or two wearing hoods/masks to protect identies (Sit-ins at public executions, pamphlets, posters, on campus rallys ect.), as once upon a time you could study magic. How can we burn those we used to teach?! They will be dealt with as traitors to the Crown, and jailtime is a risk. This in itself will cause civil unrest, innocents jailed for peaceful protest. A rift is forming between both sides of the issue, though it's still largely on an intellectual basis. The populace at large is still very afraid of magic, and the executions have taken hold in that fear. Of course, the King decreed it Illegal, but this doesn't mean everyone agrees with it. Some are willing to risk treason to object.
9-10th Weather Hazard Non-Moderated Kingdom-wide Weather EVENT — The Blizzard of Cylus 718! Storms! All the wicked storms. From the afternoon of the 9th and all day on the 10th of Cylus, a severe blizzard rages across all of Rynmere and parts of the Eastern Kingdoms from the north to the south, leaving all of the Kingdom buried under snow and ice, ravaged by wind, and helpless for trials afterward.
11th Dig out! Non-Moderated Open Impact Opportunity — Kingdom-wide dig out! After all the snow from the trials before, much of the Kingdom is buried under sever amounts of snow, from the far north of Gawyne all the way to the port cities of fair Venora. Livestock and poor commoners alike are suffering, freezing, potentially dying. Who will step in and rescue them and/or help their homes get unburied? Your participation will Impact how well Rynmere recovers from the first blizzard of Cylus 718.
13th Red Tide Non-Moderated Open EVENT — The ocean has turned red! A scourge of strange blood colored bloom is spreading across the waters of Rynmere, leaving dead and rotting fish in its wake. The bloom itself renders any fish contaminated covered in a thin ruddy film and completely inedible. Those who have risked eating them have become extremely ill with food poisoning. The locations that aren't yet corrupted are far and few between. As a result this has driven the price of fish up again, causing strain on the common folk in the darkness of Cylus with limited food supplies. Forced to eat less meat with the price of such is already quite high, in the dark and the cold, civil unrest brews. A protest in the market erupts in the snow and the wind, stalls are damaged and a fire erupts in the fish mongers stalls. The Moseke Knights are hard pressed to put out the protests, but eventually all is calmed down. The protests of this trial also prompts Krome to increase its hunting of game meat to compensate for the lack of fish.
15th Taking of the Guard Moderated Kingdom-Wide Impact EVENT — VII has coordinated an attack on all of the Duchies in Rynmere. The bandit cells in each of the Duchies have kidnapped members of the guards of each Barony, as well as killed a few. Others have been injured significantly in the attack. Those who were injured have been instructed to give a message to the nobility - "We are the power in Rynmere, never forget."
17th Public Mage Execution Non-Moderated Open EVENT — Much as the previous execution on the 5th of Cylus, a mage is burned in public view near the prison in The Crown for all to see. There are still protestors, but the weather has made both the audience and their numbers smaller. While the executions are largely in Andaris, wide-spread fear is beginning to lead to smaller, less-authorized public executions in villages and towns across all of Rynmere, whether or not the accusations of magic use are valid.
22nd The Evening Solstice Non-Moderated Open HOLIDAY — Across Rynmere, a great outdoors festival is held in the town center to celebrate the Turning of the Season and thank the Seven for their guidance and wisdom. This is a huge feast, with drinks and food imported from across the countryside. This is less of a noble event, more of a commoner event, however Nobles are known to come for a bit of "off the books" fun. It is tradition to light a huge Seven flame center piece rather than a bonfire.
23rd The Solstice Disaster Moderated Kingdom-Wide Impact EVENT — The day after the festival, those who come into their town squares will find the kidnapped Guards, strung up dead on tall pikes. Its a message for the leaders of the baronies. "Do not oppose us." There are clues to be found here on possible VII threads (location/witnesses to give faces to names ect.). Stay tuned for something fun in Ashan!
25th Game Shortage?! Non-Moderated Impact RUMOUR — There are some rumors that Krome hunters are struggling to supply game due to clashes with the VII on the roads. Deer are becoming hard to find. Could there be a case of over hunting?
28th Public Mage Execution Non-Moderated Open EVENT — By the end of Cylus, public executions of mages of all kinds have become a regular occurrence in Andaris, and the warmth and light of the pyre is of little comfort. Across the Kingdom, mages are trialed and executed in all Duchies and Baronies, whether overseen by the Order of the Mantis or whether ordered by local civil decisions. Not everyone is pleased with the fear and paranoia that has allowed some innocents to be accused and martyred. Protests, still largely small in number, have attracted a few more supporters, but many protests are dismissed under threats of treason to the Crown wherever they spring up.
30th War Room Discussions Moderator-Prompted Open EVENT — Nobles across Rynmere and the Eastern Kingdoms are invited to a serious planning discussion about the VII and their actions. They must be stopped. This needs to occur post other discussions with key players.
fashion

Color: Orm'del Sea Blue

Image The color for this Cylus is Orm'del Blue, as if the people of Rynmere were dreaming of Saun days by the beach instead of being buried under the record snowfall for the season, soaking up sunshine instead of being in darkness. This blue is all the rage in cloaks and coats, scarves and hats, as well as seen in the beautiful brocade fabric that is suddenly the rage for this short season spent almost entirely stuck indoors.

Women's Fashion

Image Perhaps its because of how much time everyone has at their disposal when snowed in, but ladies' hair braids are in high fashion this short season, often decoratively protecting the ears and easily tucked under a hood for protection against the biting wind and frigid temperatures of Cylus.

Men's Fashion

Image Is this really fashion or just plain practicality this season? Well, no one is telling, especially none of the menfolk this season. Knee boots and even thigh-high boots of both sturdy and decorative nature are in high demand this dark, snowy season, perhaps because they are both the best protection against the thick powdery stuff or because they look so good.

Accessory

Image While already popular within the nobility for practical reasons, Signet Rings are all the rage this season. Declare your family name and crest with a little bling on your finger or sometimes around your neck as a fashionable necklace, and use the signet to emboss the wax seal of all those letters you're writing while hiding from the dark and the cold at home.

Fabric

ImageEveryone is enjoying lovely brocade this season, the special woven and embroidered fabric finding its way into thick dresses, warm coats, vests, and other layered pieces of clothing to add a bit of decorative, impractical flair to any outfit.
kingdom overview

Population Growth

Total population is slowly growing. A season of rebuilding has led to increased birth rate. Population raises from 19.4 million to 20.6 million.

Imports

Slaves: The supply of slaves is still steady, with no real increase needed or desired.

Leather: Leather importing remains normal.

Sugar: Sugar prices rise again slightly.

Stone: Stone prices are steady, returning to a reasonable price.

Metal: Stable.

Livestock: Massive inflation here. The hunting seasons of Vhalar and Zi’da have seen an over-hunting of natural game, leading to heavy reliance on domesticated livestock. Prices in Rynmere have tripled for purchasing bovines, swine, and fowl, especially given the harsh weather Cylus brings.

Rumours surface that some of the poorer citizens are eating horse and rat.

Exports

Each duchy’s exports are moving, but Krome is suffering from a lack of game meat. Andaris’ war on mages has also decreased the number of intellectual and political works coming to and from Andaris, meaning that places like Nekhet and the Eternal Empire aren’t importing and exporting political texts.

Kingdom Impact

The impact for the citizens of Rynmere is as follows:

Rynmere is having a hard cold cycle, the hardest in many arcs. Drastically less game means a heavier reliance on produce, and the growing population has put a strain on that harvested bounty, which was good, but not good enough.

The general atmosphere of Rynmere is changing, with the war on mages and the Citizens’ Alliance (RCA) gaining prevalence as well as increased bandit raids along trade routes by VII. Because of this, many citizens of Rynmere, poor and wealthy alike, are gravitating more towards intellectual pursuits instead of manual labour. This has caused some scarcity in certain professions, and the economic result is a Rynmere whose currency is inflating and whose economy is not rising to meet it.

If this economic trend continues, the divide between those who have and those who wish to have will only increase.
kingdom state of affairs
716 saw the failed coup of Veljorn Burhan, leader of the Qe'dreki rebels and usuper to the throne. With this, Zvezdana Venora, his wife, went missing, reportedly last seen in Rharne. It is rumored that the remnants of the Qe'dreki have fled to the Eastern Settlements where there is lingering anti-Crown sentiment and less of an authoritative reach.

The end of 716 also saw the attack of Aelig's Shadow Monsters, which did some damage in many of the regions around Idalos, but were simply a front for something more sinister. The defeat of Aelig and Audrae at Treid's Heart brought about the end of the attacks, but the people of Rynmere still felt the terror from the upheaval the previous arc.

717 saw more turmoil, though on a lesser scale. Peake Andaris renounced his family name, Alistair Venora was stripped of his titles and rank, being exiled along with known criminal Fridgar the Lothar. Fridgar, also, assaulted the King and then used Becoming to escape the clutches of the law.

But even in such tragedy, beautiful things can blossom. Xander Krome's marriage to Celeste Andaris showed a powerful political union, and set up both Andaris and Krome to be quite powerful houses in the coming arcs. Celeste's pregnancy also added another flower to an otherwise dying vase.

Speaking of weddings, King Cassander's wedding to the Empress of Rynlism, Emerson Sands, united the two most dominant forces in Rynmere. The Crown and the Faith had typically remained pointedly separate, but no longer. This has caused some unrest with the citizens of Rynmere, and has gone a long way to furthering the desire and establishment of the Rynmere Citizens' Alliance.

The Alliance, or the RCA, are a group of anti-nobility terrorists who have made it their mission to bring about the downfall of the nobility in Rynmere. Though unsuccessful, they have committed several acts of terrorism around the kingdom.

Speaking of Factions, the VII have been rearing their ugly head. Pythera Venora - aka Butcher of Warrick aka Valkyr - sought out and attacked Olive Venora and Caius Gawyne in Zi'da 717 in what appears to be a personal vendetta. This event has sparked some fires within the Faction as well as the Dutchy. There is more activity from this group of recent, and rumour is they are looking to make their mark on the island. Funded in part by their own members, the VII also received a large boost of funds from Pythera Venora when she joined, however her share of Venora's wealth is about to be cut off. The Faction also gets by with their bandit activities across Rynmere. Their Military Might is quite good. Whilst small at present, the core of this Faction is built of very skilled members. They are also moving to start a recruitment drive with the upcoming Mage Burnings. This could see their numbers bolstered by magic users, making them a dangerous Faction.

And finally, the anti-mage sentiment has only grown stronger and more dire since Fridgar the Lothar's attack on King Cassander, who has in turn made magic of any kind illegal across all of Rynmere. Though little is known about them, the Order of the Mantis, or the Ash Cloaks as many have taken to calling them, have started showing their presence in Rynmere, hunting mages and burning them at the stake in public execution. It is currently unknown if they possess some sort of mage-locating power, or if they are simply relying on the mundane means of acquiring information from unwilling participants, but they are finding and eradicating every Spark they can.

House Warrick

Wealth: Balanced - House Warrick supplied most of Rynmere's harvest, and while this year was not a surplus crop, they still made a profit.
Military Might: Very well armed - House Warrick has the largest population of Skyriders in Rynmere, and a well-trained, well-fed populous. Due to their high population, they have a high amount of deployable manpower.
Allies: Venora (Excellent), Andaris (Positive), Gawyne (Positive)
Neutral: Burhan, Endor, Krome
Enemies: VII (Abysmal), Coven (Abysmal)

Venora

Wealth: Excellent. House Venora continues to be one of the largest exporters of luxury goods in Idalos, selling wine, art, poetry, fineries and clothing across the world through the Cyrene Bay. They have a surplus of food due to the large farming presence across the Dutchy, allowing them to export their extras to Andaris. They are also the largest supplier of floral arrangement across Rynmere, particularly in Saun.
Military Might: More than capable. House Venora is one of the main bastions of the Moseke Knights, and possesses sizeable population to draw from.
Allies: Andaris (Excellent), Warrick (Very Positive), Gawyne (Positive), Krome (Positive)
Neutral: Endor, Burhan
Enemies: VII, Coven (Abysmal)

Endor

Wealth: Wealthy - House Endor manages trade and business throughout all of Rynmere, and they take tariffs and commission within their deals. Mining activities have recently been impacted by mysterious worker deaths. No impact to wealth as of yet.
Military Might: Average - Endor’s biggest weakness is it’s lack of manpower. Nevertheless, House Endor is one of the larger benefactors of the Skyriders.
Allies: Gawyne (Excellent), Krome (Excellent)
Neutral: Venora, Andaris, Warrick
Enemies: Burhan (Negative), Coven (Abysmal)

Gawyne

Wealth: Declining - It was a particularly wet year in Gawyne, making already few harvests poorer which in turn led to a much larger percentage of food imported from Warrick in the arc of 717. With all of Rynmere recovering from the civil uprising, the interest in academics was much less of an emphasis for the Kingdom, and the outlawing of magic by the King that led to a cleansing of Rynmere University does not bode well for intellectual profitability for the coming new arc. That said, many rebuilding projects across the Kingdom have kept Gawyne's quarries, the heart of its economy, as busy as ever and so the Duchy has simply recognized where its profitability can be found for the time being.
Military Might: Stable - After the civil unrest, which much of Gawyne didn't participate in anyway, the isolated Duchy quite loyalist as a whole, much of the hardy northern people found a new reason to focus on martial training and the Hearth Guard, Gawyne's own militia, has found a surge in numbers this arc. While the Duchy has continued to provide loyal and skilled U'Frek's Sailors as well as offer the Kingdom's most exceptional rugged training to all its military, the firmer establishment of an internal force is seen as a bold move.
Allies: Endor (Excellent), Venora (Very Positive), Burhan (Very Positive)
Neutral: Andaris, Krome, Warrick
Enemies: The VII, Coven (Abysmal)

Krome

Wealth: Poor but Improving - After the failed rebellion against the Crown, Krome lost a great deal of financial resources, including food imports from Warrick. Now supplied food by Venora at a higher marked price, while also taking loans from said Duchy. Recent marriage relations between Krome and Endor are seeing some funding support being provided to Krome to pay off its debts to Venora.
Military Might: Well-armed - Krome has a large force of Moseke Knights and a militaristic, trained population. While their population is moderately low, Krome’s populace is much more militaristic than the other Duchies, and your average adult citizen can typically fight to some degree. They also house the fearsome Riders of Krome.
Allies: Andaris (Excellent), Venora (Positive), Burhan (Positive), Endor (Excellent)
Neutral: Gawyne, Endor
Enemies: Warrick (Negative), Coven (Abysmal)

Andaris

Wealth: Very wealthy - Andaris, wielding both half of Cyrene Bay and the capital city, is a wealthy duchy and the center of much of Rynmere’s financial industry. The land manufactures the most goods out of all of the other regions, and wields the majority of Cyrene Bay’s trade power, exporting many goods outward. Celeste Andaris has also brokered a trade agreement with Tristan Venora (Oakleigh) and Andraska Venora to export to their Baronies/Dutchy paper, books, medicine and luxury goods.
Military Might: Well-armed - Andaris has a high population and a focus of Moseke Knights. While their population might not be the best suited for combat, the sheer size of their army makes them among the greatest military powers in Rynmere.
Allies: Krome (Excellent), Venora (Positive), Warrick (Positive)
Neutral: Gawyne, Endor
Enemies: Burhan (Negative), Coven (Abysmal)

Burhan

Wealth: Surplus - House Burhan, continues to maintain their financial status from 716. They are renowned for trading and privateering for the Kingdom, and bring back many spoils from the surrounding regions.
Military Might: Poor but Improving - After Veljorn claimed such a large portion of Burhan’s military for the Qe’dreki, the House’s military was cleaved in half, with many more members loyal to the Crown fracturing off and either retiring from the military or relocating to other Duchies, however they are slowly improving.
Allies: Gawyne (Excellent), Krome (Positive), Venora (Positive)
Neutral: Endor
Enemies: Andaris (Negative), Warrick (Negative), Coven (Abysmal)
