Re: Ruin's Dawn: Noble Shadows

When the Crystal was revealed, whether Zoro chose to take it up and move on, (and Woe would grant Zoro the honor of carrying it, as he was the one who solved the puzzle) Woe would move onto the next room. He was beginning to loathe the path that was laid out before them, and more than once questioned the reality of it all. Perhaps he was dreaming, and all of this was merely an elaborate dream bordering on a nightmare.

They came to a room, and there was another symbol in the center, of a crown. Woe pointed to it, and remarked to the others, "Raskalarn's symbol." He said, having visited Raskalarn's temple in Yaralon once upon a time, he knew the symbol very well. "Best be on your guard."

Then they came to the mirrors, Woe looked into them, and had to do a double take when he saw a little more in one mirror than the others. "This is... strange. I'm seeing a wild warrior man pointing at Xander, but when I turn around he isn't there. An illusion, perhaps?"

Woe sighed, not quite sure what this puzzle was about, if puzzle it was. "There's a black-haired woman too, and another biqaj. I don't recognize any of these people."

He turned to face the others, without moving away from the mirrors. "Do either of you have any idea why I'm seeing these things, and not you? And there are three of them, whereas there are four of us. Perhaps if I describe them to you, you can say whether you know who they are?" So Woe went on to describe their features as best he could to the others.

Gennadiya moved around helping as directed glad to see someone else was better at puzzles then herself. It appeared Woe, Xander and Zorra were correct and it was some replication of a ship. The young woman was glade to see that some here was familiar with a boat. Besides the occasional river trips, Genna had only been on a ship once in her life and that arcs ago when she moved to Rharne from Ne’haer. Even then trying to remember what a deck would have looked like would have been impossible she honestly hadn’t paid that much attention to what was on the deck. She had been friendly and nice to the sailors, but had also stayed out of their way.

They eventually moved into the next room and it appeared to also be connected to an immortal. Genna tilted her head and looked at Xander. “I couldn’t say for sure but I believe that Ethelynda and Raskalarn aren’t best friends and I don’t think enemies at the same time they don’t get a long well. So if this is an arena that would make sense that Xander who bears the great serpents mark might be in the middle.”

She tilted her head and though. “Maybe you need to stand in the spot where you are seeing it from as if you were the wild man. I can take the spot where the woman is and Zorra the spot where the Biqaj.” Genna said. “Or maybe since Mirrors tend to invert what were seeing is an invert image. My hair isn’t dark but in the mirror it is. Xander is marked by Ethelynda but in the mirror fights over the image of Raskalarn, and Woe, my friend are one the most civilized people I know but your inverted image is that of a wild man?” Genna ventured slowly and tentatively?

She would look around and see if anyone suggested something else otherwise she would move to the spot Woe indicated the dark hair woman was.

Zoro was very pleased to have helped direct the strange puzzle in the room they had just been in and was glad that it was a success. It boosted his confidence and whilst Zoro was usually a keen and eager biqaj youth the touch of success buoyed this further perhaps tipping him into annoyingly keen. Either way, Zoro was glad to begin feeling useful to the group and he had a spring in his step as he bounded into the next room clutching the crystal.

Once they were in the next room, Zoro listened to what Woe said he could see in the mirror. A wild warrior pointing at Xander with a black-haired woman and a biqaj person in the background. It sounded almost like it was a mirror image of them. Zoro was convinced that Gennadiya had the right of it when she said that they were opposites of those in the mirror. Very respectfully but with unrepressed enthusiasm, Zoro blurted out, “I think Gennadiya is right and we are opposites of those in the mirror. But there’s no Mer?” As he said that, Zoro looked around. “Where is Mab?” Zoro asked and turned to the others to see if they knew.

However, they had to deal with the mirrors and so Zoro tried to re-focus. “I think Xander has to fight the wild man. The only twist being that he can’t see him and we must all be directed by Woe.” As Zoro said this and if there were light enough in the cavern and anyone was looking they would see his eyes swirl with a touch of pink.

It seemed that the groups plan of action in the room dedicated to Ufrek had been a success the plan went off without a hitch and Zoro lifted the glowing crystal from its place at the center of the room. "Good work Zoro." Xander said, patting the man on his shoulder encouraging way as they began to make theri way over too and through the next door. It seemed they would have to pass a series of challenges in some way or another as the group of them continued on into yet another themed room.

Xander was the last through and some how did not notice that Meb was no longer with them either. No he was too focused on taking in the room they now found themselves in. It was some sort of stadium or theater? No, it struck him then that it was an arena, a place where usually folk would fight to entertain those there to watch and yet there was nobody watching them and there were no enemies at least not as far as Xander could see. He followed the others as they moved further into the room and approached the mirrors.

Xander looked into its shiny surface and saw only himself staring back at him, Woe on the other hand saw something different. Xander looked at the mirrors with curiosity in his eyes. Were the people Woe saw invisible to them and actually in the room with them or was this some other kind of illusion was it some sort of way one glass or a trick to throw them off? Either way, how could they fight opponents they could not see if that was even what they were supposed to do. The Shieldbearer scratched his chin and once again decided it may be best for him to defer to the others in this situation as they began to offer solutions and he had none.

Xander listened to the individuals Woe described and was uncertain but hearing that one of them was pointing at him Xander's hand drifted over to the hilt of his sword that hung at his side. He was already at a disadvantage if he had to fight an invisible opponent he would not want to be caught unready if that were the case. "I have no better solution to offer to this than that which you have all suggested, to take up positions as directed by Woe as to where we should stand and to see what comes of it." Xander felt uneasy about the whole situation, powers like this magic or divine always made him feel out of place and unsure. He was infamiliar with dealing with such things and he was sure it must often show. Put him in front of an army of warriors and he would be more confident than when dealing with that which was beyond the normal.

"If I must fight then I will fight the outcome of that fighting I cannot predict but if a battle must be fought I will give it my all." Xander began to move towards the spot indicated by Woe unless told to do otherwise or unless something else happened to stop him from doing so. He drew his sword when he got there and made ready, scanning his surroundings uneasily.

They came into the room and Woe described what he saw. But, then, there were discussions and ideas. Gennadiya wondered if the wild man was the opposite of Woe, and Zoro considered that perhaps it was down to Woe to direct them. But, either way, Gennadiya moved to the place where the dark haired woman stood, and when she did, one of the five mirrors against the wall cracked and splintered, shattering.

But when Xander stepped into the fighting area, Woe saw the wild-looking fighter grin and nod. But he didn't strike, yet, he looked at Gennadiya and Zoro expectantly. The mirrors showed this to only Woe, and as far as Xander was concerned he stood alone.

There were four corners. Two were taken by the dark-haired woman and the biqaj. There was the middle of the pit, where Xander and the wild-looking man stood ready. And there were the mirrors. What there was not was any sign of Mab. It seemed that, somewhere between the snakes and this room, they had lost her.

Woe saw, via the mirror, that the man was getting impatient. He started swinging his sword in Xander's direction and though the tip of his blade missed Xander by maybe a hair-width, Xander felt not a thing. However, then the wild-looking man reached forward and flicked his sword out, the line of blood on Xander's arm was shallow, but very very real.

The man only Woe could see made gestures suggesting that he wanted them to hurry up.

Gennadiya Lyosha

Ruin's Dawn: Noble Shadows
35 of Saun, 721

Gennadiya took her place where the other woman was standing and as she did so one of the Mirrors broke. The young woman stood there put looked at the others. She was watching as she saw Xander’s arm suddenly cut. Her eyes opened wide in surprise and she called out to Xander, but didn’t move. “Xander what happened, is the cut bad?” Genna wanted to rush across the floor, but it took all of her control to stay there. She wasn’t sure exactly what was going on with the puzzle but it wasn’t complete and she was afraid that it would be more dangerous if they didn’t do as instructed, or as necessary. This puzzle could clearly damage someone.

Genna looked over at Zoro and called, “I think you need to stand exactly in the place were your opposite in the mirror is.” The young woman looked around trying to find the Mab, but wasn’t having much luck. It was then that she remembered her healer’s sight and wanted to kick her self, but first. She looked at Woe. “Can you help him get there. Also lets get Xander in the exact spot, and are you in the exact spot as the wild man?”

Genna then stopped to let them focus on positioning themselves. While she did that she opened her healer sight to see if she could sense Mab close by. Maybe just outside the door. Genna felt a tug at her heart worried that the woman was lost or sitting in a corner somewhere alone and afraid. The healer would love to go back and help her if she was, but she also wasn’t ready to abandon the world yet.

Eventually she accepted that if she was close by it was beyond the range of her abilities, but she was able to check up from Xander and at least confirm that while a cut it wasn’t life threatening, at least not yet. The could get through this puzzle.

Woe was caught off guard, he had to admit, by the vision in the mirrors. It caused him to recall something that happened some arcs ago in Augiery, when he'd been enslaved to the Naer of that city. The Black Haired woman resembled the Naer that had bet on him in a fight, who'd tried to pry her way under his defenses. The wild man, recalled the Lotharro, Argider, who had crushed Woe in their bout after Woe had finished two other opponents. It couldn't have been a coincidence that they were in Augiery, and now he was having this vision. He alone. No one else could see what was in the mirrors, as far as he knew.

He listened to Gennadiya's suggestion, and had to admit, as the puzzle began to come into place around them, he thought she was correct in her assessment of the situation. And, in case things didn't go well here, he turned to Zoro, who alone he hadn't introduced himself to, "My name is Woe, by the way."

Then, he took his place, where the wild barbarian man was. He unhitched his whip from its place at his belt. It was a shortish bull whip, made for close combat, and crafted by a master from Scalvoris blooded leather. He looked up at Xander, if he'd move toward the center where he belonged, and said to him, "I will attack you now, in the barbarian's stead. Don't worry, I know how to hit in just a way not to cause injury. But it will hurt that much more for not causing injury. Are you ready?"

Woe stared apologetically at Xander, but shook his head. "There will be pain, but you must stand firm."

He would wait, of course, for the rest to take their places. If they would. But even should Zoro not take his place, he would take up the mantle of that barbarous figure in the mirror. He uncurled his whip, and with a swift motion, attempted to lash Xander in the side of the head, on the ear. True to his word, it would not leave a mark or an injury, but it would hurt if it landed.

Ooc
Woe is using his capstone, True Lash to avoid doing actual damage to Xander. However, as a part of mitigating the damage, he causes intense pain, more than usual, at the site of his strike.

True Lash: Upon learning to use flexible weapons, mishaps are bound to happen. Formed from his earlier failures with the weapon, Woe has devised techniques that will absolutely prevent self-injury with a whip he is wielding. This method of prevention can also be extended toward those he uses the whip against, given his exquisite sense of control over a flexible weapon such as a whip or flail. When using flexible weapons such as whips, flails, and scourges, Woe can simply choose not to injure a person, whether it be himself or another. With finely tuned control of an attack's impact, he can increase the pain he causes while mitigating unintended damage by a factor determined by the quality of the whip and his skill with it.

The pain of these bloodless lashes are so intense, that they can stun the one struck if their discipline and endurance stats are lower than expert, with increasing resistance above those levels.

Gennadiya stood where the woman was and one of the mirrors smashed. To Zoro that made it seem obvious that standing in the same place as their invisible opposites was not the right thing to do. Thinking about it, he looked around.

There were four corners, two of which had people standing on them. If Woe had to look in the mirrors, and Xander had to fight, that left him and Gennadiya. Surely, Zoro reasoned, that meant something very obvious. “I think we should stand opposite the people that look like dark reflections of us,” he said. Looking at where one of the mirrors had broken, he smiled at Gennadiya and said, “I don’t think we can risk losing the only thing that allows us to see our invisible opponent.”

Zoro winced when Xander was injured and then he listened with slight disbelief as Gennadiya suggested what Woe should do, and Woe did it. Then, Woe decided to attack Xander with a whip. “I really don’t like this,” Zoro said ardently, but he did not want to let his companions down or to spoil things for the group if this was, after all, the right thing to do. So, reluctantly and with worry making his heart heavy, Zoro moved and took a step towards the spot where his dark half apparently stood.

But he couldn’t do it. “I’m sorry, Gennadiya. I’m sorry Woe. This feels wrong. I think we should stand opposite our dark reflections.” And, so saying, Zoro moved. There was no point being the only one who stood on the corner spot opposite the corner where the dark biqaj allegedly stood. “Any test or puzzle which requires us to hurt each other,” he said, “is a test or puzzle I will not be participating in.”

So Zoro moved to stand next to Xander and drew his sword, to defend his friend against the attacks which came, apparently, from both within and without the group.

Ruin's Dawn: Noble Shadows

Xander wasn't sure what was the best way to approach the situation but he took his place in the center of the room and sword in hand he waited. The others took their positions and the mirror broke. Was that a good thing? He wasn't sure but this situation was one where he was even more clueless than the last. Then Xander felt it, and hissed as the warm blood trickled over his arm as a fresh slash appeared in his skin. He glanced around at the others as he stepped back slightly, how could he fight someone he could not see.

Xander steeled himself for more attacks but when Woe took the place opposite him he faltered. Was this right he did not know, but he supposed a whip that would not kill him was preferable to some invisible blade. Xander looked at Woe and his jaw tightened as he prepared himself. He did not move away as the whip struck him in the head his ear rang loudly and his let out a grunt of pain, his teeth locked together as he fought against the pain.

He was strong but the pain was excruciating and he would not deny he felt relief when Zoro stepped forward expressing his concerns. Xander winced, still feeling the pain on his ear where he had been hit by Woe. "I don't know what the right thing to do here, this whole situation makes no sense to me, it is a puzzle beyond me at this time.

He tried to think of an answer but none came to him and he tried to think how he could fight someone he could not see or complete the puzzle. He raised one of his hands and rubbed the side of his head where he had been hit, the other hand held his sword and blood was still trickling slowly from the wound on his arm.

"I think we should try changing the positions of Zoro and Genna maybe as Zoro says? I am not sure what else we should do, how long are you supposed to keep attacking me?" He asked Woe as he tried to navigate the situation, trying to think about it logically and also trying to think about it creatively although once again he was defeated by the situation. "At the end of the day I don't have a better solution that that offered by both of you so whichever is chosen I will follow for the good of all of us but I just don't know what the answer is here."

The shattering of a mirror did nothing to deter Genna, who turned her attention to Xander - but she managed to resist the urge to go to his aid. Her suggestion was that they should stand where their opposites were and Woe agreed. Then, Woe decided that the thing to do was to attack Xander - in the way that the barbarian had. The whip cracked and Xander felt a searing pain where the whip had hit.

Zoro spoke his dislike of the situation, and Xander seemed not entirely convinced - but the moment that the whip hit Xander, the floor beneath them disappeared simultaneously with the mirror shattering and shards of glass flying around them. They tumbled and fell, the darkness claiming them.

It didn't hurt, as such, but they were each of them uncomfortable as they landed in a pile of rubble. Looking up, the fall should have killed them, but it had not. The hole in the now-ceiling which had been the floor on which they stood mere moments ago was maybe twenty or more feet above them. Yet, unlike the last room, there was a sense for each of them that this had not been a win and they had descended deeper, closer perhaps to Augiery but not in the direction they wished or needed to go. They had a moment to gather themselves, dust themselves off and discuss anything they needed to discuss.

When they landed, they found themselves in a much more roughly-hewn room with stale air and detritus from many years ago. There was a single exit - a long tunnel which led, eventually, to another door.

If that was what they chose to do, of course. Dust rained down on them and the stale air smelled old and decayed. Xander had a cut on his arm which could do with being tended to, because he was at risk of infection here.

All of them got the feeling that there was something in the Shadows, watching. But, should they shine a light around, they'd find that it was only them in this strange place.
