Re: Forum Guides and where to put them

You can use the Google Chrome Dev Tools to copy the HTML directly from the forum. See this option:

Then just use the element finder to locate the post content and copy it:

Then paste it into the Wiki and you'll need to remove some style tags and do some tidy-up, but broadly speaking I think this will get you most of the way there...

Also...

I vote for #1. Lets all pitch in! Get the old cloud-finger-tapping-pool going and nail it!

Re: Forum Guides and where to put them

That really helps! That will make things quicker, absolutely! We might get it done in a week, with that!

Ok - so! Following this post in this thread (copied in the spoiler below in case you missed it) - we've got the following:

Peg - yes to helping - Option 1
Pigs - yes to helping - Option 2
Clara - no to helping - Option 2
Darius - yes to helping - Option 2
Dan - no to helping - Option 2
Tech Guy - yes to helping - Option 1

If any of the people who posted pre-Tech Guy and his amazing magical 🌟✨🌟 solution (thank you thank you!! 🙏🙏🙏🦃) want to change your vote, feel free to post again.

I'd like to (if we can) hear from as many people as possible here - we all use the Guides (or, if we don't - we really should!!! :D  )

Thankee!
Previous Message In Case It Gets Lost In Here!!
Heya everyone -

So - in the spirit of getting started, I just tried to put this - or the finished bits of it - on to the wiki. It's enormous, as a task - because the coding / formatting is different - because the wiki doesn't do BBCode and the board doesn't do html.

It took me over an hour to get the first first tab of the first post done - and to my mind that is far too long.

So - realistically, if we say "yes, we're going to move all guides to the Wiki" we are looking at hours - and hours - of work. I, personally, am not prepared to prioritise that for moving information which exists and is accessible already. As we say round my way, the juice is not worth the squeeze there.

Therefore, I'm going to propose that we do something else. Options as I see them are:

1. We get a team effort of maybe 10 people. First, they identify every guide we have and their location. Then, starting at the top of the list, each person creates a "wiki" version of specific guides (the wiki coding isn't hard, it' sjust not the same as bbcode. Very frustrating), then add the current wiki guides to the correct categories. Then, go to the first page of each place where the guides were and put in those links. To give an indication - I think that (think - guess - guesstimate) - if we had 10 people and everyone gave 1 hour a day till it was done (or equivalent) - it would probably take 2 weeks.

2. We have, maybe, a single "Guides" category on the wiki - with a list of all guides in existence (linked) and a central "guides" forum where all the forum-living guides live.

3. Something I haven't thought of. Anyone got any suggestions?

I understand entirely that the best option is to have everything on the wiki - but tis a biiig job. So - if folks want that (and it'd be great!) - can you give some time? Please let us know by posting in here. If we get enough people - we can have 1 as an option. But if not, it currently isn't one.

Please reply with two things.
a) Whether you would be prepared to give some time (maybe an hour ish a day ish over a 2 week period) to get all guides on the wiki.
b) If we can't get enough folks to volunteer - what you think of option 2 / suggestions for option 3.

Thanks all!

Re: Forum Guides and where to put them

1 sounds like it would be the better option if enough people participate. It seems like Tech Guy's solution might make things easier?

Like Darius I think that the second option would be a solid fallback solution though.

I won't be able to help though. RL is very stressful right now, and I'd like to use what time I have to volunteer on ST to continue reviewing.

Re: Forum Guides and where to put them

My vote would be for 1 if enough people volunteer. Unfortunately, I do think I will be able to. Between work, and helping to take care of my nephews, my time on ST is often ten minutes here, five there, and half an hour there most days with the occasional day where I can spend most or all of the day on ST. I am unable to predict when I will get one of those days when I can commit a significant chunk of time at once to ST, so I would hate to say yes and be unable to follow up on that.

If there aren't enough volunteers, my vote would be 2.

Re: Forum Guides and where to put them

I'm honestly split between the options, so I don't have a firm opinion on that.

BUT......

I'm absolutely happy to volunteer time to make whatever happen. :D Count me in!

Re: Forum Guides and where to put them

I'm very split between the options, even with the html trick I'm not sure I could do it properly. That said, I'm undecided between 1 and 2 but willing to help regardless.

In my mind, TG's post is a game changer. I think it'll take some hand holding and stepping through, but with some basic instructions, I'm sure we can all pitch in to get it done. This gets us our ideal solution, and dramatically cuts the workload.

Also, TG's template is amazing...we love you, too, Tech Guy! 💜

Personally my vote is 2, but considering all options I'm not opposed to 1!

Thanks! What about whether you'd be able to put some time in to it?
