Re: The All-Taverns Tournament

“I’m fine. I bought a house in the Glass Quarter recently. I’d love for you to visit Ayla and me sometime”, Tristan replied and returned the smile because he was just so very happy to see Faith again. Once upon a time, he had loved her – he hadn’t realized that until it had been too late – but nowadays, she was one of his best friends, and she had taught him a lot. She had made him realize that everybody deserved to be free.

“Thank you”, he remarked a little more quietly when she told him that he had done a beautiful job at Vri’s wedding. He was still quite amazed by the fact that he had been asked to officiate an Immortal’s wedding. He doubted that a lot of people had been given such an honor before. It had been wonderful, and a bit overwhelming, to be honest!

“Oh”, he made when Faith said that the fighter might be the same woman, the woman that had once been known as Vivian Warrick. A moment later, when Faith mentioned that Vivian had been a dear friend to Zvezdana, the expression on his face briefly turned thoughtful. Veljorn and his rebellion had brought a lot of suffering to the kingdom, but he still wished that his cousin hadn’t died. Far too many lives had already been lost.

“Vivian!” he nearly exclaimed when the woman in question showed up and grinned. “It’s good to see you again!” he told her and really meant it. They had never been particularly close when they had both been living in Rynmere, but it made him truly happy to see another fellow noble that had made it out of the kingdom alive. And what more, Faith had called Vivian one of the bravest and most noble people that she’d ever met.

He was curious about that.

For the time being, Faith had a question for him though.

He glanced at the fighters for a moment, furrowing his brow very lightly, before he turned to face her again and replied in a somewhat thoughtful tone of voice, “They see it as a sport and as a form of entertainment. To some, it constitutes a distraction from the troubles of life, or a reminder of simpler things, to some, it's something that makes them feel alive, and to some, it’s simply fun. People enjoy matching their skills against each other and finding out who’ll win, at least most of them do, I think”, he continued. He had never really thought about it before, but it kind of made sense to him.

There was likely an instinctual, psychological aspect to it.

A little later, when Ilaren answered his question, he nodded. It made sense that she couldn’t be seen to favor any one fighter. When she asked him for his opinion, he admitted, “I kind of wish that I could watch all the fights at the same time, but I’m especially curious about Praetorum and The Wall. I’ve never seen an Ithecal and a human fight before. I wonder how The Wall will fare against that tail”, he remarked and glanced at the tail in question for a moment. That thing had to be longer than a grown man!

He wondered if Praetorum could use his tail like humans used an arm or a leg …

Before long, he found himself distracted from Praetorum’s tail by the mention of Ilaren’s Gold though. If such an extraordinary brew was available, did that mean they might have drinks from Rynmere as well?

He wouldn’t be able to drink a lot if he wanted to heal people rather than accidentally making their injuries worse – he loved alcohol, but he was also a responsible healer, thank you very much - but he wanted to see if he’d be able to find a part of home in the Lightning Dome and taste a little bit, at least!

Re: The All-Taverns Tournament

As she weaved through the crowds, she caught sight of a lesser spitting what she could only assume to be insults at the arena staff. She smirked, but observed as he gestured wildly to a gauntlet of some sort with mild curiosity. Did he wish to bring the little thing into the fight? Looking about the crowds, no one else seemed to have the problem. Though, her own hands couldn't be balled... perhaps this was a chance to get some freedom.

She walked over with purpose, raising a clawed hand to grab the attention of the staff and fighter. He fit the description of her opponent, hopefully she was right. "Would it not be fair for this lesser to use his... gadget, seeing as we have our own?" The Nearikk flexed her fingers to draw attention to her claws. She shrugged unconcerned and continued. "We believe if both agree to a fair match then the terms should be negotiable, yes?" She questioned as she turned to the man. "We have no issues with his gadget providing he has no issues with our own."

Rozkia's eyes shifted briefly to Ilaren's from before lowering her hand to her side. Though shorter than the lesser, he definitely had experience. Experience she'd need to top to win. Still, in the interest of improvement and self advancement if they allowed the arrangements she got more out of it. If she lost, the worse thing would be a few cuts and bruises and some pride loss. Though winning was the best and only course she would consider.

With her piece said, she rolled her shoulders as she eyed her opponent. No doubt even without his gauntlet he'd be a strong fighter- Rozkia would need to either prove stronger or smarter. She couldn't tuant him if he couldn't understand common. The way he continued to shout seemed to prove that. Would he recognize physical taunts? Rozkia flashed him a smile full of teeth after she had spoken and walked back into the crowd. Should they decide to allow him his weapon or not, she'd look forward to the fight regardless.

Arc 721, 8 Zida

As the couple talked, she felt Balthazar’s emotions, causing a smile to slip across her lips. Their shared ability to sense each other’s feelings took time to get used to, but right then, Elisabeth knew exactly what she felt from him – happiness. She was happy too, having a chance to spend time with him. That always made her happy.

His advice was taken in the spirit it had been offered, and Elisabeth retorted quickly, gently poking him in the abdominals as she replied, laughing softly. “Remember, love. I’m not as experienced with alcohol as you are. In fact, my drinking experience is limited to drinking with you.” Balthazar leaned closer to her and whispered a few more things, causing her to smile. The kiss to her head managed to widen the smile. The young mage watched him walk away and couldn’t help but think about how lucky she was. “Damn,“ she thought. “I love that man.”

It was hard to ignore the taller man across the way that toasted her. Arching an eyebrow gently, she watched him approach her and introduce himself. He knew who she was? Interesting. Elisabeth made a mental note to find out more about that later and simply listened to what he said.

She hadn’t looked at the board, but Balthazar had told her she would face a Fast Ghastly. This Orias seemed to be confirming that. He gave Elisabeth information she didn’t have before, which was generally the reward for a bit of patience. “A pleasure, Orias,” she said, giving him a polite smile. “Oh, is that Fast Ghastly? Well, I suppose I’ll find out soon enough.”

Unlike others, Elisabeth wasn’t concerned about winning the tournament. She knew her skills were not good enough for that, but she did want to learn more and grow her abilities. Perhaps that gave her something of an edge, not having the pressure of winning on her.

Glancing at Orias, she thought about what Balthazar said regarding scoping out the competition and putting other fighters off balance. Was that what Orias was trying to do with her? Probably, and it was a bit amusing considering her focused mindset.

Re: The All-Taverns Tournament

Vivian said she didn't work all of the time, just most of the time and Faith returned the woman's smile. "And this is what you do for fun? I disapprove." She did entirely disapprove, but she also figured that Vivian was only half telling the truth when she said this wasn't work. The woman was dedicated to the point of lunacy - not that Faith was going to be saying that, lest she be accused of throwing stones in her glass house - and this was a chance for Vivian to train in a new and different way, Faith figured.

She looked up at Tristan as he said that he'd bought a house in the Glass Quarter and Faith's face showed her absolute delight at those words. "You have? Oh, we live just outside Rharne, near Volta. Tristan, that's amazing!" To be close enough to him that they could meet up was a thought of real pleasure for her and her eyes sparkled with deep emotion. "And yes, I know you're right." She looked around at where they were and what this place was and stood for. "If I had my way," she said, seriously, to both Tristan and Vivian, "I'd ban all blood sports like this. Which probably means it's a good job I'm not in charge," She gave a slight chuckle and then cast her eyes around.

"Alright, well, I'll come with you if I may?" Faith said that to Tristan and then she gave Vivian a smile and reached out to hand her a ribbon which she pulled from her hair. "A favour for good luck, Vivian. I hope that you have fun," she would be hoping that Vivian won, she decided, and that no one got hurt enough to need a healer.

To Tristan, though, she slipped her arm into his, more than comfortable to walk with him. "So, how are you? Is that cat still a monster? I know it came from the Misty Miasma, but that doesn't change the fact that it is the incarnation of evil. And how's Ayla? I bet she's grown so much! I'd love for Ayla and Rose to get to know each other better. And the twins. Noah and Maddison." Thinking of it, and all that had transpired, she glanced at him as they made their way. "Do you ever hear from Lady Elyna or Lord Krome? I wrote to them, a number of times, but got no reply." Faith had been hurt to find out that they weren't the friends she'd thought they were. "Do you remember Nir'wei? He was a Jacadon handler and trainer? He's a council member in Scalvoris now." She tried to think of the others that she and he had known.

It was strange, Faith thought to herself. She rather missed Rynmere sometimes. Not a lot and not for long, but she missed it. With an internal shake of herself to stop herself from being maudlin, she was happy for Tristan to lead the way as they went to watch adult people pound on each other for fun.

Vivian grinned and nodded at Tristan. She knew that he hadn't exactly been on the Qe'Dreki's side during the Rynmere Civil War, but she herself had turned her back on them almost immediately after the war herself, so wasn't inclined to make an issue about it. Then she laughed slightly when Faith said she didn't approve of what Vivian did for fun. "I'm hardly surprised. Still, better than attending balls and such." she said, before frowning slightly in thought. "Less dangerous too, for that matter." she mused, her tone indicated she wasn't even particularly joking about it.

When Faith asked her question, Vivian turned to Tristan with a appraising look as he gave his answer. "You're not wrong, Tristan. But there's more to it than that." she said, before gesturing towards where Praetorum was standing in the pit. "Folks like me and Praetorum over there, fighting is an intrinsic part of who we are. It's what we're good at and it's something we enjoy. It's part of why a lot of folks like us go into military organizations, it lets us turn that towards protective and beneficial ends." she said, before frowning slightly. "But not all of us are up to risking our lives everyday, and even those of us who are don't actually want to spend all our time in danger of dying." she said, before making another gesture, this time encompassing the entire pit. "This is safe, or at least as safe as it can get. The career fighters, soldiers like myself or Praetorum, this is our craft, and here is where we get to show it." she said, before looking at Faith. "Hurting each other isn't the point. It's a side effect, and one the vast majority of us would happily forego. But until someone finds a way to make that happen, those of us in the pit have to make do with what we can." she said, before gesturing at Ilaren.

"Our Lady understands this, hell she seems to be like us, or as like as an Immortal can get. So we have the tournaments and the sanctioned fighting pits. There are rules and safeties in place, as opposed to underground pits where there's no one to stop a fight that gets out of hand or that cater to that dark part of Mortality that craves death and bloodshed for the sake of it. Nor are there the slave pits where those with no choice are forced to fight for the pleasure of the onlookers, regardless of their own feelings." she said, her tone somber. "Here, it's strictly volunteer and it even pays fairly well. Our Lady made a place for us where we can be ourselves, as safely as it can be done and with minimal risk to anyone who doesn't want to be a part of it." she said, before grinning slightly at Faith. "Don't get me wrong, I don't expect you to agree with it, and it is kinda perverse that some folk are just...well, the way we are. But people come in all shapes and sizes and oddities." she said, her tone cheerful again. "And if you don't want to watch, that's fine." she said, before frowning a moment. "But don't tell Varlum." she said, her tone suddenly serious. "I think my little brother has gotten very self-conscious about it all and he doesn't seem to want to accept it. I can't say for certain, but I expect he's easy to wound on the subject, especially from people who's opinion he cares a great deal about." she said, her tone somber.

When Ilaren spoke up about the drink, Vivian grinned at her patron Immortal. "I didn't figure it would have the same effects. But it did taste really good." she said, her tone cheerful. "Well, I better get back down there." she said, before patting Faith on the shoulder. "It's not me having fun you should worry about. But you, you should try to enjoy yourself. If nothing else, you tell Tristan all about that trip to the Boneyard." she said, before giving a slightly amused grin. "I still have the Prison Well. I imagine Pearl Hopper is very upset at me about it." she said, chuckling slightly before she took her friend's favor and wrapped it around her wrist. "Speaking of tournaments, though, you know they used to do this for jousts in Rynmere? It was a sign that a knight had the lady's favor, usually a romantic interest." she said, before giving Faith a teasing wink. "Don't worry, I won't tell Padraig." she said, before jumping off the box she had been standing on to rejoin the rest of the fighters.

Re: The All-Taverns Tournament

As if Ilaren herself was teasing him, not two bits after Prae had decided against going to the drink table, did a drink come his way, bringing company along with it.

“You must be the Wall,” he said with a smile, taking the offered flagon. “You’re well named. For a human,” he added jokingly. “I look forward to our match.”

Indeed, Prae could already feel his blood pumping in anticipation of a fight. He hadn’t come here for the trill of combat, no, but he couldn’t deny that there was a thrill there. The physical aspect of fighting was only part of it—especially recently, the most joy Prae had gotten out of combat was in the outwitting of an opponent, carefully calculating strengths and weaknesses and knowing how to approach each encounter.

His first opponent today, for instance was a large man—most likely to favor strength over speed. In a match like this, where Prae was likely able to actually catch his opponent, his large size would come in handy, as well as his natural toughness. Against a smaller, more agile opponent, his size would be a hinderance, and Prae would have to rely on his predictive ability and combat technique to win.

Still, an opponents build could only tell him so much. He’d have to wait for the fight to start to really get an idea of what he was working with.

Out of the corner of his eye, Praetorum caught sight of Vivian gesturing to him from where she was perched, talking to a few audience members he couldn’t make out from this distance. Bemused, he raised his hand in acknowledgement. Perhaps he’d face her soon enough.

He chatted a little longer with his opponent, before excusing himself to less busy part of the pit. Setting down his mostly untouched drink, Praetorum started to stretch, preparing himself for the series of fights to come.

The All-Taverns Tournament

Image

And so, the fighters were soon let into the arena, all at once as it were, to do their fights simultaneously. The spectators could observe whichever fights they wished, and would be expected to provide the services they promised on the end of each match, if necessary.

Ilaren's voice boomed introductions to each fighter in their turn, seeming to come clearly and legibly to each spectator group, whichever fight they wished to watch at a given moment, even though she was able to speak all at once.

It was left for the spectators to decide which fight they'd most like to watch, and they could watch several even, if it was their desire.

Whatever the case, the fights commenced, and the audience roared their approval as everyone closed in.

Off Topic
Each fight will occur in three rounds, separated by at most five days between each round of posting. Spectators are encouraged to give impressions and reactions to the fight, if they wish.

Tristan

Volunteered in the Infirmary: 10 WP to your wealth ledger.
Led the efforts to defend the Infirmary against incursion from without and within: Moseke's magic bag of refilling dirt, filled with this power: Heal the Land Heal the Land is an ability granted to bring relief to those places darkened by Blight and destruction. Tristan must stay in an area for at least three trials for this ability to work, running their hands through the soil or surfaces, letting his sweat seep into the soil. So long as this is done, any area decimated by fire or blight or even salted earth will renew itself and grow a great profusion of plant life. The life will be appropriate for the foliage of the area, unless Tristan also plants seeds as they do this...in which case the seeds will grow. This ability can turn an area without plant life into a jungle as the power of this ability lingers long after Tristan left. For the reminder of the Cycle and the Arc after, plants will grow at nearly four times the rate they would anywhere else. This area can stretch as far as a mile but Tristan is only capable of using this item once an Cycle.
Sent for Reinforcements: Chester and your bond with him has improved, to the point where he has developed a new ability!
Telepathic Link This allows Tristan to establish a telepathic link with any one person. The link remains as long as he desires, though they must consciously end it when they wish to. This allows Tristan and their chosen recipient to speak back and forth telepathically. Verbal nuances such as sarcasm or tone are indistinguishable at this level, but they may relay whatever information they want.
Opened the way to the Arena for Faith: Zanik was mightily impressed with your example of... might. He's granted you adored status with the first 3 powers in Elithem.

XP: 20 xp
Magic xp: None
Renown: 30

Balthazar Black:

Won your first round of combat by Decision: Item: Life-Time Supply of Purple Whiskey- a convenient (and mostly indestructible) container of Purple Whiskey that never runs dry on Purple Whiskey. When you need more Purple Whiskey, just pour more water. Set it and forget it. This cask or container of alcohol can be shared with as many people as you wish. Great for parties!
Won the Quarter Final by knockdown: Rising Lightning: Balthazar is able to direct a bolt of lightning beneath their feet, giving them an added boost to a jump. She is able to use this ability to increase the height of their jump up to 15 meters.
Black core, red outline!: From now on, whenever Balthazar controls elemental lightning in any form, he can toggle it's color, to Black core, red outline.
Proceeded to the Semi Final: Custom Ability: When shouting your battle-cry, "Another one!" once a trial, Balthazar activates: Capacitance They are able to capture and store lightning within themselves. They can then turn this inner energy into a field around themselves that can either repel thrown metal weapons, or contain it within themselves to cause any whom they come into contact with to be wracked with painful spasms. The energy field version of this ability extends out from them five feet in all directions (Spherical Aura). The field only lasts for a total of ten bits per day. The function of the field can only be changed once every trial and is negated if they're completely soaked or standing in water that is knee deep or higher. Alcohol intoxication diminishes the power of this ability.
Saved the Ground Pounder's life: Custom Ability: Elemental Manipulation - Lightning (Moderate) The character is able to control more lightning, and at longer distances. Their limit is extended to a distance of 30 meters before the lightning dissipates, and can be bounced up to two times, to strike a total of three targets. Capable of throwing two lightning bolts a bit. If the bolt hits it can cause lingering pains, numbness, and slight burns to any struck body parts. Those hit by the bounce effects of this ability are dealt damage as though hit by a bolt of the Minor version.
Fought like a demon: Custom Ability: Ride the Lightning Balthazar is able to travel along any bolt thrown using their Elemental Manipulation, ending where the bolt impacts or at a maximum of 30 meters.
You Won!: Well not really, but you earned the status of Champion with an asterisk. Ilaren obviously can't grant you the title of Champion of the All-Taverns Tournament, but she feels sorry that you never got the chance to fight for it, and never gave up. She gives Balthazar personal lessons in unarmed combat off screen. Satisfies a Gateway plot for Tier 2 Combat:Unarmed. Please submit a gateway ability to the PSF at your convenience.

Sarah Glazebrook arrived at the safehouse without alerting anyone. Her simple brown robes swishing as she made her way through the sprawling complex she'd built up over a couple decades of hard work, of directing the intelligence wing of the Shadow Quarter. The day had been fruitful and resulted in the gathering of much vital information on several individuals. And while the Witch Doctor's apprehension was a loss, and would threaten to disrupt the carefully cultivated balance of power in the Quarter, especially if she squealed, Sarah was confident in several allies she'd made in recent seasons that she could arrange for the Witch Doctor's tragic and untimely suicide.

She slipped into her own quarters within the safehouse, a sumptuous room that reflected the status of the one who it belonged to. She began by removing the golden coloring from her hair, washing it out with a solution that stood on the vanity. She sat down in front of the mirror, and began fussing with her appearance. Eventually the golden locks gave way to platinum hair, and she began removing her makeup.

Sarah stared into the mirror, until she saw what appeared to be the glint of red eyes. This caused her to jump, and turn around. The fright on her face softened, however, when she saw that it was no monster settled into the darkness behind her. It was her contact with the Hands of Fury. Sallahan Ki'Oriq. "Don't scare me like that." She chastised him.

"'Pologies Miss Glazebrook. I hope you found what you were lookin' for." Sallahan muttered, "We lost a lot of bodies today."

She smiled thinly at him, "Sacrifces were needed, you'll be compensated for your losses."

"No doubt." Sallahan said, his voice glinting with malice.

Sarah hid her revulsion behind a mask of indifference, she just smiled at her contact, "The Quarter will be up in arms... I..."

Just then, Sallahan's hand formed a claw, and it scratched across her face in an open handed slap/slash. She shrieked as she fell against the vanity. "W...what?"

"I'll be havin' my payment now. Stay still, cuz this'll hurt enough as is."

Having said that, Sallahan's claw formed into a thorny appendage, which he thrust down her throat, tearing through soft flesh and tissue as it worked its way down. Her screams were stifled by the blockage of her airway. Eventually Sallahan's flesh melted and became the claw, which sank into her mouth, until it could no longer be seen. Blood trickled from her nose, as she twitched and shuddered against the vanity. However as the bits passed, her body began healing of the wounds just inflicted upon it. Eventually, she stood to her feet, and looked into the mirror, continuing to clear her makeup.

Her eyes shone orange in the mirror as she beheld the new body. Around her neck, the Watchful One rested, a gem that allowed her to read thoughts and delve into the secrets and minds of others. If the Cheshire thought Glazebrook was a perennial nuisance before, he certainly wouldn't like the new her.

She smiled into the mirror, enjoying the new pleasing form. While Sallahan Ki'oriq, and the template he'd taken from West Wellyn's father had been suitably intimidating for most purposes, it was time for the Parasite to take on a form more pleasing to men. The Quarters of Rharne would quake in her footsteps.
