Re: Ruin's Dawn: Noble Shadows

There was something in the air around them, some thick darkness that threatened to overcome them all. The imposing shadow filled him with an icy chill, the sounds of creatures and rocks moving in the black were menacing and he feared if he stood there waiting in the ever more encroaching darkness he might become delirious. The shieldbearer feared that whatever it was that seemed to wish to overwhelm them, to blot out their courage might well do so and he may never leave that cave lest he stumble out of some unknown exit a broken man. Alas he was sure he had stronger resolve than that, he was certain that he would find some way to overcome this ominous feeling that surrounded them. His hand remained on Gennadiya's arm as she searched and although they did not seem to move far from where Ethelynda had left them Xander did not let it go as she searched for the source of the sounds and whatever it was that the healer was attempting to illuminate.

His eyes scanned the darkness searching for anything out of place, searching for the source of their fear and the presence that sought to drive them by fear. He followed the beams of light that left Gannadiya's hand and watched to see if they would reveal anything. He listened as Woe spoke of them standing strong, suggested that they should not rush into the darkness around them and instead should fight on their own terms. Xander could see the logic in this even as he struggled with the feelings of discomfort that grew from the still growing and advancing shadows around them. Xander slowly drew the ornate sword from its scabbard, the gift he had recieved earlier that arc would serve him well here should he require it. "I am not sure how is best to tackle this situation, whether to fight something here where we are being oppressed by whatever is causing this darkness or whether we should push on, perhaps this darkness is simply an illusion that surrounds us and beyond its borders may be less of an oppressive feelings." He somehow doubted it and yet he wanted it to be true that they could possibly simply continue on and leave the darkness behind them.

"However, if we wish to stand and fight here, to hold our ground and let whatever is causing this come to us then I shall do so, I am your sword and shield." He said first to Gennadiya but then looked to all of them around him. "I will protect you all to the best of my ability, should it come to it." He meant it too, they may well have been strangers too him but there had always been a need within Xander to protect others, perhaps it was his noble burden perhaps it was something else.

The sounds of the creatures intrigued him and he listened more keenly to the hisses that seemed to move from them in one direction. As he stood with his companions he tried to decipher what the hisses were saying if he could. If it were the language of snakes he should be able to understand it, it was a new gift that had come to him recently, he had no doubt it had come from his mark by Ethelynda and while it was new to him he had found himself hearing the whispers of grass snakes in the crop fields sometimes as he had walked by them or coming from under bushes in some secluded park in the city. It was an odd thing but he was beginning to be able to drown out the words of the snakes when they were present and an interference.

Now, however, he focused in on the hissing to see if it was of the Serpent Tongue. If so he would garner any information he could from it and if not then once again he would return his focus to preparing to defend the group if he needed too. For now though it seemed they would not move on in the tunnel and he would remain with the rest of the group, moving forward alone would only endanger their ability to complete their task here.

Re: Ruin's Dawn: Noble Shadows

As the ripples her spark emitted plucked at the string of Gennadiya’s frequency, Mab was forced to take a step back in surprise. A 30-piece orchestra played through Mab’s body and she immediately clamped the slippery black spark within her in the tight grip of a whirlpool to cease the strumming. Mab’s mouth went dry with fright; she didn’t know a single note but the cacophonous sound of power was evident. Scared of the darkness on a moonlit night, the cranky wakeful darkness of the caves and the way it menacingly snatched at the edges of the light from the bracelets made the mer particularly sensitive to the potential power and intent of the others in the room.

Stepping toward the outskirts of the group, Mab gripped the spear with a trembling hand. What it’s like to stand in the presence of heroes I guess… Mab rationalized, but the trembling would not leave her hand. A rock tumbled in the distance and hissing sounds fled deeper into the caves. If the animals are fleeing, I think it’s best that we flee too… Mab trusted the animal’s intuition better than some noble hero bent on proving his worth. Mab thought skeptically of Woe and Zoro’s decision not to move deeper into the caves.

Mab was young. Not the rebellious teenage kind of young, but the kind life had the chance to slap around a bit when you disobeyed your elders. So, it didn’t occur to Mab to question Ethelynda’s command or intent; she was after-all an immortal and as far as Mab understood, an infallible being with ultimate power. Disobey your mother and don’t do your chores and you’ll get a time-out, disobey an immortal and don’t do your quest and your skin might just be their new rug.

Courage bolstered, unknowingly by the very person she doubted, Mab’s eyes sought deeper into the cavern Ethelynda had gestured at them to follow – searching for any evidence of what might exist deeper within.

“I think this courage is rather blind…Ethelynda is an immortal. We should obey and follow her wisdom. What kind of arrogant nonsense is this…standing and fighting something we can’t even see?” Mab muttered to herself, so quietly only those standing nearby would hear.

As Gennadiya flashed light, from a source Mab couldn’t find through the brightness, she was blinded for a moment as her eyes struggled to recover from the brilliance. Her pupils shrunk painfully from the sudden light, driven delirious with surprise. Even with the bracelet the caves turned a gummy blackness afterwards, pupils struggling to widen from their shrunken state. She could hear the sweet voice of the blond woman, though she could not see her encouraging smile, through the brightness agree with Woe and speak of Naerrikk – a humanoid race Mab only knew from legends.

Mab’s eyesight returned just as Xander looked to the group and promised to protect them despite his reservations about remaining. Emboldened further by his concern about remaining, Mab raised her voice, this time loud enough for all to hear.

“Remaining seems ill advised. Ethelynda is an immortal so we should obey and follow her wisdom. How arrogant are you to ignore her directions? Standing here and fighting something we can’t even see? We should move on immediately as directed.” Mab voted, though not bold enough to go alone into the icy cold of caverns shadows. Should Gennadiya’s light shine on something they could see and fight, Mab would eat her words and duck closer to the radiant woman. However, should nothing come of the light, Mab would shrug faintly and add, “See, there’s nothing there. But, we should hurry along before there is something to worry about!”

A Storm is Coming...

As the group stood there very intent on staying in place instead of moving the creatures in the cave began to get brave. Some circled around their claws scratching very lightly on the rock walls of the cave. Any loose rocks would fall the ground below causing an echo throughout the cave. When Gennadiya tried to catch what first made the noise in her light there would be nothing there but what appeared from a distance to be a smooth path on the rock facing. It made it clear that there were at least two different creatures in the cave with them.

It took some time before Genna was finally able to shine the light on a brilliant teal green snake with horns all over the face going down its back. What stood out most was the purple eye that watched the groups movement with an almost understanding to it. Once more it began to hiss very slowly at them as the head bobbed very slowly back and forth so that it could see each person. The green venom that dripped even when its mouth was closed caused a slight smoke to rise off the ground where it landed.

“More intruderssssss. We mussssst make them leave. Our home issss ssssacred. No one elssssse mussst enter! Ssssshe will be very upsssset,” the snake hissed and glanced around at the shadows, “Ssssshe issss hurt and musssst be protected from enemiesssss!”

As the snake began to move there was clear burn marks on the animal showing it had tried to protect whatever or whoever was hidden in the caves. With another loud hiss the creatures that had once been silent began to move even more restlessly. It appeared that the snake had something to do with the “protectors” in the shadows. If questioned the snake would call for everything to hault looking back to the group.

“What do you think you can do? You are not one of usssss. Sssshe hassss protected usss from danger. But we have failed her onccce,” the snake hissed staring at Xander as he appeared to be the only one who could understand, “how issss it you underssstand me outsssider?”

As Gennadiya shone a light all around them, Woe willed his consciousness to open itself up with the technique of OmnivisionOmnivision lets him sense things in the dark or that can otherwise not be seen or sensed with conventional senses.. He used it to sweep for whatever these snakes might be driven by, or any other intervening forces that might not have their safe passage along their 'errand' at heart.

Woe mostly ignored the complaining of the mermaid, although her unwillingness to fall in line was noted.

The mage then used his Empathy magic to try and calm the snakes down, if they had a tangle. He strummedStrum allows Woe to bring out from an emotional tangle a specific feeling or sense in another individual. In this case, he's trying to calm them down. whatever sense of calm he could from them. "There there... Nice snakes..?" Woe didn't much enjoy reptiles, but understood animals enough to realize that they could be dangerous when they were afraid. And he tried to mitigate that however he could, through his Empathy magic.

Woe looked to Xander and Zoro. Xander had said something in a strange voice, as if he was speaking directly to the snakes. Was he able to communicate with them? A quick survey of Xander's TapestryTapestry allows Woe to suss out context clues from the surface of an individual's tangle. It's not mind reading, but it gives him clues as to what they might be feeling. would perhaps give him clues. However his findings granted him little more than confusion.

In the meantime, he held his hand close to his whip, ready to fight if need be, but willing to reason with these beasts, if they could be. Woe preferred parlay to combat, in general, but he wasn't incapable of fighting if push came to shove. He only hoped these snakes were more than they seemed, or that Xander could indeed find an accord with them.
OOC
Calm = opposite of volatile
Calm = opposite of distressed :P
Confusion = Opposite of understanding.

Must Do: Woe is going along with Xander, if he wishes to reason with the snakes.

Re: Ruin's Dawn: Noble Shadows

Ducking closer to the radiant pale blond, whose light shunned the dark Mab was so terribly afraid of, and tried to stifle a yelp. Her feet twitched with the urge to flee, and it was only the greater fear of being alone in the dark that held her to the group. After her initial fear subsided she regarded the creature curiously. The serpent looked nothing like the smooth water snakes she had seen from time to time, instead its flesh was peaked into hardened horns and ridges. To protect it from abrasion here in the caves… Mab guessed, relaxing. Perhaps this is what Ethelynda meant when she suggested she’d be watching over us? Mab considered. Despite the saliva that sizzled against the rocks beneath it, she had a hard time believing the appearance of a snake following the disappearance of the half-snake immortal was a threat, and the tension in her shoulders eased.

Aposematic colours shimmered in Genna’s light, dazzling the Mer. The blue-green was opalescent and brought the benevolent amethyst eye into stark relief. Unlike Mab, the creature was not blinded by Genna’s light and instead met the eyes of each member of the group. She glanced around her, watching everyone’s reaction to the creature’s gaze after it had met her own gaze. The same intelligent predatory gaze she had seen in the hawks at home made her exhale with a sharp whistle. More than predatory intelligence if it’s a creature of Ethelynda’s… Mab decided.

“Ethelynda said she’d be watching over us, maybe this is what she meant?” Mab’s white freckles reflected the light from the bracelets readily making her face easier to read than one lit from a unidirectional light. It would be very clear that the darkness was getting the better of the Mer. She spoke to the group, but in response to Woe's quiet soothing snake wishes.

Mab glanced over her shoulder when she felt something pass behind her. My imagination is getting the better of me… Looking to each of the adventurer’s Mab took a step towards the tunnel, watching to see if they would follow. It wasn’t decisiveness or leadership that propelled her to encourage the group, but the looming threat of the creatures in the darkness that nipped at her confidence’s heels. Mab was a hapless ignorant child compared to these experienced adventurers. So while they wove intricate webs of magic and employed invisible skills, Mab was ignorant of their endeavors. As far as she was concerned, the males were simply well armed and Gennadiya was the only one with power enough to repel the darkness, a lodestar beneath the earth - a star where the sky don't reach. Mab described whimsically in her mind castle.

The quiet meditative hissing rising from the snakes parted jaw rose in decibels and the scuffing sounds from the shadows increased in frequency and volume. Mab was too terrified to notice the burn marks on the snake, nor the particular attention it paid Xander. The Mer was intent escaping the caves shadow beasts as quickly as possible. "It must be protecting us from the creatures here. I can't imagine a snake would appear just as a half-snake immortal disappeared to threaten us. We are likely in another creature's territory, if they haven't attacked us yet it's because they're hoping we'll simply leave their home. This is foolish. we shouldn't dally." Mab wasn't as confident as she sounded, but fear is a strong motivator to speak ones thoughts.

As she waited to see what the group would do, Mab continued to jump at the smallest sounds, brandishing her spear clumsily at the edges of the bracelets light in the direction of sounds beyond their reach. Should Xander speak to the snake Mab would restlessly move back towards the group and as far from the darkness as possible. However, should anyone agree and follow her into the tunnel Mab would readily abandon Discipline 0xp the rest of the group to get out of the immediate cave - even if it should mean going deeper into the threatening abyss with only a single other soul.

Xander Andaris

Ruin's Dawn: Noble Shadows
35 of Saun, 721

Xander was somewhat surprised when he heard the voices of the snakes in the darkness, when his ear could decipher the meanings of their hiss. He had discovered he had the ability but still he had been surpriseed to find that the creatures were indeed snakes. Xander attempted to stabilise Stable is the opposite of Volatile. the situation that was at hand, Mab seemed to be about to make some sort of bid for freedom from the darkness around them as Woe spoke to the snakes too.

Xander on the other hand had a question to answer. "I am Xander Andaris, a Shieldbearer of Ethelynda, The Noble Serpent, we are not here to harm you we are here to help." He removed his hand from the hilt of his sword and instead flashed the silver shield on the back of his hand to the snake, the low light of his bracelet causing it to shimmer softly.

"I see that you are hurt and you spoke of someone else being hurt, I have a powerful and talented healer with me, she might be able to help you if you allow her." He gestured to Gennadiya, hoping they would trust him, his tone was calm and soothing Opposite of Distressed as he attempted to make sure there was no misunderstanding Opposite of understanding of their intent. It was his belief that if they wished to succeed they would likely have to find a way to get these Snakes on their side. "I see those burns on your skin, we know that Faldrun has sent his servants here did they do that to you?" The nobleman asked as he looked back to check that his companions were not doing anything to jeopardize his negotiations.

The Shieldbearer, looked to each of them and spoke. "I can understand them, I think maybe they will not hurt us is if I can prove we mean them and their Mistress no harm." Perhaps he had hop skipped and jumped a few steps there but he was making a decision baseed off his gut feeling and it was screaming at him that they were not the true threat here. "Genna, they seem to be hurt and they spoke of a woman being injured too, if they allow it do you think you can heal them?" He asked her calmly trying not to make any threatening movements that may make the snakes think he was going back on his word.

Xander turned then directly to Mab and looked her in the eyes. He used his ability to inspire When this skill is activated, those around the user find themselves able to resist the fears and doubts that plague their minds, allowing them to act in spite of them when they might otherwise be unable to do so. This does not only apply to martial fears and doubts, but to fears and doubts in all facets of life. others given to him by his Taithir Mark. "Do not let yourself be overcome by fear, it will make you act irrationally, beathe and think carefully. These tunnels are extensive and pitch black if we split up we might never find one another again." He allowed the ability to take effect as he turned then to face Zoro and Woe. "Make sure nothing sneaks up behind us if you can." He said gesturing to the darkness that surrounded them incase anything that was not the snakes was also prowling nearby.

The sound and vibration of the falling rocks was unnerving. Then, there appeared a light from Gennadiya and, at first, it seemed only to create more shadow to the young biqaj. He was unnerved, and he was very aware of just how inexperinced he was in comparison to Xander, Woe and Gennadiya. He agreed with Mab that they seemed to be both skilled and heroic but then Zoro remembered something that his Uncle Zaphod had often said to him. "Even the largest boat started as an acorn," he whispered under his breath to comfort himself. "It took time to grow. rain and sun to feed it. Deep roots to strengthen it. Strong hands to shape it. Wind and sea to test it. And me to sail it." He'd never really understood what Uncle Zaphod was going on about, but in this moment he realised that he was the acorn and he was becoming the boat.

There was a bloody big snake. More than that, it was a bloody big green snake. No. No, it didn't stop there. It was a bloody big green snake with horns and purple eyes. "Deep roots to strengthen it," Zoro mumbled and he stood firm. Xander seemed to be able to understand the snake, which meant that it was a bloody big green, horned, purple-eyed talking snake. "Rain and sun to feed it," Zoro's voice shook slightly; he was distressed, but he stood his ground.

Zoro found the snake's words impossible. He was in a state of ignorance. But he remained calm and didn't fly off the handle or run away. Being volitile wouldn't help here. "Strong hands to shape it," he whispered and he felt the comfort of Uncle Zaphod's words.

"Nice snakes?" Zoro said, questioningly to Woe. "I hope so." There was something about Woe's presence which Zoro found comforting. He was glad that the man stood firm. He noticed that Woe had a whip and he thought it was a strange weapon, but very appropriate against a snake.

Then, Xander said that he could understand them. He wanted Genna to heal the snakes, which Zoro thought was a bit risky since they were so big and fanged and dripping venom, but he had shared an adventure with Xander and he trusted the man to make the right choice. Unsure what to do, Zoro was about to ask how he could help, but Xander gave him and Woe a job, which Zoro was very happy to do. "Yes, sir!" Zoro said, and he turned his back on his companions (and, he thought, the bloody big snake) in order to survey what might sneak up on them. His cutlass was drawn and he did his very best to look everywhere, co ordinating with Woe as much as he could.

Acutely aware of the fangs and the fact that his back was turned to them, Zoro's chin jutted forward and he repeated time and again, the same words. "Wind and sea to test it. And me to sail it." He looked in another area. "Wind and sea to test it. And me to sail it!" As he said the words 'and me to sail it', Zoro waved his cutlass in a sort of waggling motion. He was terrified, and it showed, but he did not allow that to get the better of him.

OOC:
Must do: I can not convince the creatures as I can not understand them. But I am supporting Xander in doing so. I hope this meets the objective.

I was not sure whether I had to do the opposite of all three words, or just the opposite of the first and then use the next two.
Opposite of understanding = ignorance.
Opposite of volitile = calm. Also used the word volitile.
Opposite of distressed = comforted. Also used the word distressed.

Gennadiya Lyosha

Ruin's Dawn: Noble Shadows
35 of Saun, 721

Gennadiya oddly felt better once she had found the snake with her light. She continued to hold out her palm lighting the place up. She was didn’t understand opposite of Understand of what the creatures was saying, but given her extensive training in psychology Master and while that training wasn’t specifically with snakes, she had worked with Ilthical and suspected that these were agitated. Her sapphire eyes also traveled along the snake and she could notice the burns. She was familiar with the sight of such wounds.

She continued to watch and the snakes seemed calculating opposite of Volitile. She could guess they didn’t necessary want to attack. She looked around and could see that Woe was composed opposite of distressed and ready for what ever happened. Genna nodded agreement with him that they let it go either way. Xander was working on communicating with the snakes while Genna looked at Mab and Zoro. Both looked afraid, and Genna couldn’t say the the fear wasn’t there though she suspected that besides her own training others were also helping to stem the fear.

She looked directly at Xander as he asked about healing. Her calm voice said. “Snakes aren’t my focus, but yes I can help heal and patch them out. Between the gifts Moseke has given me and the vials of Lake water I keep in my kit I should be able to help. If necessary I can summon an oasis which will help. Though I would prefer waiting on that since the water is also rather nasty to the servants of Faldrun.”

Genna looked at the snakes to see what they said about the offered healing. Genna was ready if something did happen though. She had her bow and while she had arrows they weren’t the tools she was ready to draw on. These creatures were guardians and could easily be there allies, but Genna didn’t want to kill a creature that was only her enemy because of a miss understanding.

So she waited ready, but hopeful.

A Storm is Coming...

The teal snake kept swinging its head back and forth watching the group as the others of its kind moved around them. They would attack when given the order from what appeared to be their leader. It was when the first male spoke calling them good snakes, a hiss resonated past the fangs of the snake as its scales almost appeared to ruffle in anger. There were only five and yet it was constantly trying to watch every one of them at the same time. The snakes were not keen on the techniques that Woe tried to use to figure out what was happening. As his first ability omnivision was used he could not sense anything there but the snakes that were moving around them.

However, as the man used his next ability strum, the teal snake that was illuminated by Gennadiya physically calmed down. It slowly moved its head back and forth continuing to watch them all, but it was not doing so in an angry way. The last technique that Woe used allowed him to sense the anger, confusion, and protectiveness that was in the snake’s hearts. They were truly trying to protect whatever was beyond the cave they were currently in. As Mab tried to move away from the group the teal snake hissed angrily and several of its kin moved in the darkness between her and the rest of the group. Though they did not try to attack her.

“Xxxander Andarissssss. Sssshieldbearer, noble ssserpent. You wissssh to help ussss,” the snake hissed and turned to look at Gennadiya when he mentioned a healer. The burns on its body were painful causing the snake to be even more agitated, “I will come down firssssst. If you truly wissssh to help, there may be time sssstill.”

Carefully the snake made it way down to the ground before moving closer to the group of travelers. It would make sure they were safe first before showing them the way to “her”.

“If you can help usss. Then we will aid you in your quesssst for the noble sssserpent,” it hissed to Xander moving so that Gennadiya could work on its injuries.

Once Gennadiya had done all she could for the snake, it nodded its head while watching them. Moving quickly back to the shadows it whispered to the rest of its clan to help the outsiders protect “her”. Quickly the large gathering dispersed towards the two tunnels that lay at the other end of the room.

“Follow my kin. They will lead you through the tunnelssss. Protect her and you may have what issss beyond. Fail and you will not leave,” it hissed staring at all the members of the group.

Gennadiya Lyosha

Ruin's Dawn: Noble Shadows
35 of Saun, 721

The platinum haired healer kept an eye on the snake, but as the conversation progressed, she began to sense that the snakes seemed less and less hostile. Eventually one came down and seemed to be presenting itself for inspection. The young woman glanced at Xander and then turned and knelt next to the snake. She looked over the snake and could see that it had been burned. Gennadiya truly believed in allowing natural healing process but this was certainly one of those cases where this called for something a bit more spectacular and quick.

The snake was clearly in pain, but Genna didn’t think it was in any immediate danger, but she still first dug into medical bag and pulled out a bottle of Lovalus lake water. She then slowly opened the bottle and very specifically avoided making any sudden moves so as not to startle the snakes. She also made her sure each of her actions were very obvious. Genna wasn’t sure how dangerous this creature was so she slipped on gloves before she began to apply some droplets of the healing water to the snakes burns. Once she had applied it to the snake she handed it to Xander. “Anyone can apply that to there weapon. If won’t do anything against most things, but to Faldrun servants it is at type of posion.” She focused again on the snake. She put her hand on snake and used her ability Moseke’s Light Similar to Sevrath's Will, the user is capable of focusing divine energy into a minor injury (abrasion, small cut/puncture, etc.) and coax the cells into healing. This ability requires multiple events to "convince" the cells to heal, and even then they may not heal. This ability does not weaken the character as another, more powerful healing ability would, however, the character is unable to heal major injuries. When this ability is in use, a pale green/yellow light emits from the character's skin like a mist and is focused towards the palms and fingers where it is released upon contact of another individual's flesh. Multiple uses of this ability for long periods of time will cause headache and fatigue. on the burned spots. The Dirri hummed her ethereal music in answer and the floating star fish creature began to follow ahead of them and moved with ahead to report back.
