☵ He was delighted to know Fridgar want to give this to him, to establish some sort of bond between the two of them.
"What, that night in the cave wasn't enough of a bond maker for you?"
he teased playfully, ultimate joyful at the news. He sat in front of his mate as he explained what was to come.

It did have its dangers though, and he felt his heart drop, the fear of not being able to withstand the ether flow. Was he truly worthy of such power? All these questions and many more swirled in his head, but he opted to not worry about it, take the risk, and trust his mate.

He tapped his forehead to indicate as to where he wanted the last rune to go. With a deep breath, he calmed himself, allowing his mind to come to rest, then looked to Fridgar. His eyes burned with conviction, with resolve to survive this.

Removing his pants, he felt most comfortable, doing all he could to ease the nagging feeling in the back of his head.
"I'm ready my love, I understand what is at stake. Know no matter the outcome, I always trusted you."
with that and a deep breath, he closed his eyes.

He knew that any initiation came with its own dangers, but he trusted his mate, he hadn't steered him wrong as of yet, so he gladly put his life in the man's rune devoured hands. ☵

Dosan's joke made them realize something. Yes, he'd meant it in jest, but Fridgar hadn't really seen sex as any sort of significant bond. After all, their last partner seemed to be in the pants of every other Quacian and probably every other Helian, too. They, themselves, had mated with a few people now, and Dosan with... Likely hundreds. The idea that sex was meant to be a physical bond between two lovers almost felt archaic now, muddied and watered down by the whores that Fridgar was constantly surrounded by.

The human had meant to joke with them, but having realized that they had been dragged down to the level of a common harlot infuriated them. Despite the darkness in their heart, their venomous thoughts and burning hatred, they smiled to Dosan and chuckled softly. "We didn't say that..." they spoke lightheartedly as if jesting with him. "But we certainly wouldn't mind more," they added with a shallow nod of their head.

So, Fridgar went on to ask where Dosan wanted his witchbrand, and he indicated his head with a tap. Fridgar nodded in acceptance, then listened as Dosan said he was ready and addressed Fridgar as his love as he did so. They felt no guilt that they didn't feel the same way and they'd told Dosan to the best of their ability why they couldn't. They were broken inside, and something as complicated and delicate as love was out of their reach.

"Alright," they said as they reached forward, then pressed their index finger to Dosan's thigh. Immediately, all his sense of touch in that leg vanished and he was numb. They pressed their finger to his other leg and immediately, all his strength was siphoned, the limb was inoperable as gravity increased ten times on his one appendage. They caught him before he could fall and brought him to sit in their lap. There, they cradled him and continued to place their runes.

Another was drawn upon his upper left arm with a press of their finger, and the limb became exhausted, useless. They did the same with his other arm and the air around it turned thick, difficult to move, slow to react to Dosan's commands. His stomach was next to be woven with the spider's web, and it took Dosan's sense of sight. The world went dark, whether or not he opened his eyes to see. He could still hear them, as they' left the rune of silence until last. "This next one will make you temporarily deaf," they said. "We won't be able to warn you before we place the rune of naming, but know that after we touch your forehead, you will have to endure, fight for your life."

With that, Fridgar bowed their head. Their next words could be the last that Dosan ever heard. They pondered briefly what to say before they shook their head and placed the rune of silence to his chest. The whole world went quiet, and Dosan couldn't even hear the sound of his own heartbeat. All that was left to do was to place the rune of naming, and Fridgar hesitated. They could walk away from this without Dosan, with no one that understood them in the world. The thought scared them, but they soldiered on. Dosan wanted this, they could only hope he survived.

So, they planted a kiss upon his forehead, and in its wake, they left the seventh rune, the rune of naming. At once, all their runes flared and glowed brightly, threatening to burn away Dosan's body and soul. The ether swamped him, tried to drag him under and drown him in its vicious, violent nature.

☵ He was glad the Lothar was able to take a joke, and some of his nerves melted away. Then it began, the process of the initiation. It wasn't what the viper expected at all, both terrifying him and exciting him too.

The first rune place made his leg cease any feeling, causing the viper to hobble on one leg. The next rune to be given was on that leg too cause the viper to collapse. It was good that Frid had caught him, nestling him in his lap, as it helped in comforting the mortal in his robust arms.

As the process when on both arms become useless, feeling heavy and lethargic, and it only got worse as things went on. He was looking up into that blindfolded face of his mate, and then everything went black. His sight was going. He could feel the dread slowly creeping up his body as he was mentally counting the number runes. He was five, and soon the sixth was made and he could no longer hear the pounding of his heart.

He felt lips touch his forehead, and at that moment his body felt like he was thrown back into that chasm as his father had done to him. He was engulfed in ether for the first time and steeled himself. He had to survive this, no matter what. As the viper called on every once of strength to endure what was coming, Fridgar would find himself in a place new to him.
The Viper's Inner Sanctum
☵ Fridgar would find himself in front of a large cave, the face of which would resemble a snake's open mouth. Around him, he could sense the movement of creatures, of reptiles and amphibians, scurrying about as they ran from the presence of the superior being......except for one. One lone snake, a rather large one at that, sat at the mouth of the cave and stared at Fridgar.

It motioned for the man to come, and when he did, Fridgar would see the serpent far more clearly than before. It smiled, perking up as the Protean got closer. "Welcome Fridgar, welcome to the Viper's Inner Sanctum." And with that, the large snake slithered into the cave, tapping Fridgar as if to tell him to follow.

The cave was dark, no light source of any kind, but somehow the snake was as clear as day to the Lothar. It was like they were walking in an endless void of darkness. And then the girthy serpent spoke, and as he spoke a scene began to play out around him and a single word echoed in his head.......helpless.

"You see Dosan was helpless the moment he was born. He never had the protection a child should when growing up. He was born out of a need to make a legacy and born of a union filled with malcontent, murder, bloodshed, and hate. As capable as he appears, as put together as he displays himself, the man is helpless to his own self-destruction. He wants nothing more than to shed that weakness, to shed that skin of his past. He was never protected, never given the reassurance that no matter what life threw at him he would be safe."

It explained as the scenes of harsh training and callus parenting echoed along the walls of the cave, allowing for the Protean to see just how harsh & unloved Dosan's early life was. As they continued down the corridor, the visions along the wall changed, this time the visions that appear were of broken glass, cracked imagery along the cave walls. Fridgar would hear a cackling laugh, and then the word would whisper its way into his ear........psychotic

"The poor boy, because of the mental abuse he suffered under his parents he has a clear detachment from the norms of society. He may appear to be of normal sound and mind but the boy is a true psychopath, one who revels in the destruction he can cause with his own hands. He is able to unleash his aggression at the drop of a needle and do so willingly, and with a smile. He is unstable and fixates on those who are alluring to him. He can't connect with normal people and copes by wearing a skin that allows others to see him as normal."

As the snake explained Fridgar would see....no feel his unstable psyche, the churning of his mind and the thoughts that swirl within. It would be like an unharmonized chorus of screams and questions, statements and affirmations all in Dosan's voice. Fridgar would see scenes of this play out along the cave walls as they walked, the visions and voices moving in tandem with each other in order to paint the picture of just how unstable his student's mental health was.

When those images faded something came across the walls. Streaks of red, thick and vibrant in color dripped from the walls, then turned into a downpour in a matter of trills. And as it rained, it was as if the visions of Dosan killing were projected on the torrential blood rain as a single word echoed in Fridgar's mind.......bloodthirsty

"Why do you think the scales on his body are red, his eyes as well? Its because the young man has known no other color than that of blood red. Since his birth, Dosan has been trained in the art of killing, and combine that with his psychosis, well that makes for a very efficient killing machine. He has bled for the wounded god and spilled even more blood for the entity. His thirst for bloodshed is unbridled in my opinion, and given the level of power he is at with his magic, I feel as if that will only grow as time goes on. The man has been soaked in blood, that of quacians, heretics, and of his father. He has seen so much murder that it has become normal to him. He revels in the spilling of blood and seeks out the opportunity to do so whenever he can."

With those words, the rain ceased to be, and a light at the end of the endless corridor could be seen. As they passed through the light Fridgar would find himself in a large cavern, walls adorned with ethereal reptiles of all kinds. Along the floor of the cave was a pit, and within that pit were a sea of snakes. A path formed within the pit and the large snake and Fridgar would cross it, till they reached the center of it.

Once there a massive statue appeared, one that resembled Fridgar, Dosan, Zarik, Alistair, Fantasma, & Gabriella. Staring at the statue Fridgar would hear a single word............loyal The large snake rested its head on the protean's shoulder as it spoke.

"Despite all of the negative traits that make him who he is, Dosan has one trait that is good and outways the bad.....he is loyal to a fault to those who earn it. These people depicted here have shown Dosan something worthy to inspire his loyalty in them." He said as he pointed to each figure. "Alistair showed him strength, strength in oneself and who they are. Zarik has shown him growth, coming from that fragile and meek runner to a confident lord. Fantasma is a weird girl but she enjoys his company and showed him true acceptance despite his odd tendencies. Gabriella showed him what a mother's love should be, embracing him as her own flesh and blood. And then there is you.....notice that your statue is shining more radiantly than the others?" it asked, tapping Fridgar's nose with its tongue.

"You have breathed new life into him, saved him when he was at his lowest of moments. Even though you hold no love for him as he does for you, Dosan has been fervent in the fact that no matter what happens, he will remain loyal to you. You have shown him that there is more to life than being a tool or weak. With you, he has gained a sense of self-worth and seeks to better himself because of you." The snake smiled, and the cave began to glow with the light of the ethereal reptiles within.

Then Fridgar would notice that he had no clue who this serpent was or why it new so much about him. If he asked the serpent would only smile more, and as such began to with away.

As Fridgar was delving into the innermost aspects of Dosan, the viper was struggling to handle the sheer amount of ether. Even with all his senses gone, he knew that he needed to overcome this, to be able to share this bond with his mate. He had to.

He didnt want to disappoint Frid, but most importantly he wanted to become strong like him. Even if this magic wasn't going to automatically do it, he would use this to test his will and strength. As the rune of naming coiled and shifted it form it finally set, and the viper gave a loud yell and then fell limp in Fridgar's arms. ☵

Laying it all bare

As soon as their lips met his head, they were whisked off to another place entirely. It was Dosan's headspace, the construct of his core. To the world, it was only a trill or two that they would remain there, but Fridgar had all the time in the world to explore each aspect of Dosan.

They appeared before the mouth of a cave that looked an awful lot like the head of a snake, different again to Alistair and Kaelrik alike. All around them, the serpents that writhed within their student's core slithered and vanished out of sight, except the one that was to be their guide. That was unusual, in their experience of initiating. They could tell by the shape of the serpent's head that it was some species of viper. All vipers had that triangular head, for in their cheeks was where they stored their venom.

They followed as it beckoned, then listened to it speak. They said nothing through the whole ordeal and merely followed where they were guided. Here, in Dosan's core, they were capable of seeing without the hindrance of their hone spark's eye corruption. Sadly, they were walking through the dark, and their newfound sight was wasted. Just like their runes, the snake stood out among the darkness, and they followed it without thought.

The first aspect of Dosan was helplessness, as was whispered into their ear by unseen influences. The snake explained that Dosan grew up without power, that he was never granted a sense of security in life. Fridgar knew the feeling all too well, for they'd been raised the same. They already knew Dosan's upbringing, but it saddened them to know that such events had been burned into his core, to carry with him always. With the explanation of Dosan's helplessness, they also were given an explanation of his desires, how he wanted to be free of that helplessness. With Fridgar's gift, he could be.

They merely nodded in reply to the snake to signal that they understood, then moved on to the next aspect. Images of heavy training with little love or nurturing from his parents drifted over the walls of the cave. Somehow, this related to the images of broken glass complete with a laugh that would be more at home on a Hyena. This related to psychosis, disassociation with reality. Had the abuse that Dosan endured really made him psychotic? They knew humans were considerably weaker than Lotharro, so they approached the aspect with an open mind.

The snake went on to say that Dosan was a psychopath, which as they understood it, was a state of mind where the sufferer was devoid of empathy and guilt, a person that resolved to manipulate all those around themselves while blending in beneath a sort-of mask. The snake described a psychopath as a raw, destructive maniac, however. A psychopath was a conniving, cruel man, which begged the question of whether or not Fridgar could truly trust Dosan? The snake even said that Dosan wore a skin, that he was false. They were quite alike then, which disturbed them.

Being the Protean, Fridgar's mind was already a hive of voices, instincts, and desires that were not their own. Hearing Dosan's voice among them was first unnoticed, then noticed by all their psyches. The chorus of screams was met with a plethora of animalistic snarls of aggression. Fridgar's body, his mind, it was their territory. And whatever projection his core had on them was trespassing. The attempts of his core to reach their mind were ultimately thwarted, though Fridgar did watch the walls while their totems protected them from what they perceived to be a metal invasion.

When they faded, they recognized the sight of dripping blood, which ran along the cave walls. They saw what must have been gallons of blood pouring from the roof of the cave, running down the walls in a torrential downpour. The viper went on to market Dosan to them as an effective killer, a man who spilled blood for pleasure at every available opportunity.

They couldn't help but glare at the scene of pouring crimson. Pointless death was not something they condoned. If one was to end a man, woman or child, end everything they ever were and everything they could ever be, there had to be a good reason for it. Fridgar killed for a few reasons; food, territory, and dominance. A fool would raise a sword against them every so often and they asserted their strength, their dominance with the death of that fool. Their body required sustenance from time to time so they would kill and eat humans if necessary. And sometimes, another living being would wander too close to what was Fridgar's, and in their aggressive response sometimes went too far.

They rarely, if ever, killed for pleasure. Dosan was bloodthirsty and reveled in killing.

The rain stopped, and Fridgar followed after the talking snake. This was by far the strangest core they had seen thus far, but they weren't done yet.

Rune-like snakes draped the walls of this chamber, and in the center, a statue appeared bearing the visages of a few people that Fridgar recognized. There was their Lothar totem, Alistair, Dosan... Zarik... And a couple of faces they didn't recognize. A word whispered in their ear again, and it was Loyalty. Fridgar snarled. Why was Dosan loyal to Zarik? They listened intently to what the Viper had to say. He was loyal to Alistair for inspiring strength in him and loyal to Zarik for growing from a coward to a lord?

There was nothing admirable about Zarik, nothing that would inspire loyalty. All he did to gain his power was marry someone else's husband. He was a thief and a cheat, a snake, a rat. He wasn't worthy of such respect, not worthy of a statue. Their snarl built to a more powerful, resounding growl and their clenched fists shook with rage. They wanted to destroy it, to tear it down, but they stayed their terrible claws.

The viper stole their attention, and they looked to it as it asked if they noticed that Fridgar's statue was glowing more radiantly. They looked to the scene and their anger began to quell some, their hateful rage subsided when they focused on their statue, which was more brilliant than the others. The snake went on to explain that Dosan was most loyal to them, that Fridgar had saved him in his darkest hour and breathed new life into him. This, they understood. They had made Dosan theirs through their timely rescue. They nodded in reply but still said nothing.

Their hate-filled gaze remained fixed on Zarik's statue as the snakes glowed brighter, and the light enveloped them. That was it, it seemed, the end of the ride.

When they came to in the real world, they held the weight of Dosan's frail, limp body in their arms while their runes burned on, threatening to scorch his skin. Fridgar stayed still in anticipation of what would come to be. They knew nothing of Dosan's internal struggle, but when his rune of naming came to rest and the runes that painted his body flared no longer, they knew he'd made it. They felt his quickened heartbeat, which slowed steadily. The human was asleep in their arms.

With a low exhale, they dismissed their runes and withdrew the ether back into themselves. Carefully, they lifted their psychotic student from their lap and carried him across the cave and out into the wilderness, they planned to bring him back to their cave, where he could rest quietly.

This was an exciting initiation thread for umbral hone. It's wild that we can just find these runic grottos to teach us runes here or there, and seems like the perfect setting for such an initiation. Lots of good emotional writing from both of you, I like the contrast of Dosan's unpossessive love for the Protean, to the tempestuous relationships of Fridgar's past.

Dosan's mindscape in the initiation was a neat touch, and well detailed. All in all a very well written collaboration.
