Kashehino hopped down from the cart, alighting atop the snow, without so much as a footprint of course, and sniffed at Aye-Aye mouse Qit'ria. Not that she could actually smell anything. Again, the panther's face didn't change, but Qit'ria could feel the smile within, when the large cat mewed playfully. She laid down and covered her eyes with her paws, and began counting slowly in their mental connection.

"Teyrpin"

Immediately Qit'ria knew what was happening. They were playing the game Ibanirojarsngap that she played often with her mother as a girl. It was her favorite. She had always been better at hiding than hunting when they played.

"Äjọdun"

Qit moved away from her pile of clothes slowly, focusing hard on walking with her opposite legs as she'd just figured out. She stepped onto the snow and found that she didn't fall through. That was a pleasant surprise. She could feel her the snow mildly chilling her bare feet and tail, but it wasn't as biting as it would be against her Sev'ryn feet.

"Äsïwäju"

She needed to move faster. But this walking was taking so much concentration, it was slow going. Deciding to try something different, Qit stopped. She hunched back on her hind legs, and leapt forward off them. She landed on her smaller front paws, her hinds following behind. That was a bit better. So she kept at it. Hop land. Hop land. It used more energy but she moved forward more quickly.

"Àtakò"

Qit'ria made her way over to the cart, and looked back at Kashehino. Then she realized she'd made a fatal error. There, in the snow, were Qit's prints. Her chest was heaving and her breath heavy as she looked around for an escape. Then she had an idea. She moved over next to the cart's wheel, and began digging her paws into the snow. She scratched at it frantically, tossing the little bits off to the sides of her, she used her snout to help shovel some out of the way.

"Bayi"

Qit'ria dug and dug, kicking the snow out behind her. It took three more counts to get deep enough into the snow to completely disappear from sight. She then hurriedly backed out of the hole. She hopped up onto the rim of the wooden wheel, and walked up the curve of it. As she reached the first spoke, she climbed on it and struggled to keep her balance. It felt as if her tail was pulling her in a different way from her snout. A wriggle of the butt and she flipped her tail onto the spoke, and her balance felt better. She didn't realize just how heavy her tail was. It was clearly a lot more important to her balance than she initially expected.

A few more hurried scrambles, and Qit was atop the wheel, tucked in underneath the carriage bottom, shielded from obvious view by the shadows. Kashehino finished her count, "I'm going to hunt you, my wee little mousie." Qit'ria couldn't see Kashehino from her hiding place, but could hear her own heart thudding loudly within her chest. She closed her eyes, to focus on her breathing, to slow it down, quiet it. A deep breath through her snout. It didn't take nearly as much breath as she was used to. Maybe her lungs were smaller, compared to the rest of her body. And it didn't seem to be calming her heart down.

Still, she kept trying. And nothing came of it. Then she realized her heart couldn't slow down. She was used to the beat of her Sev'ryn heart. Maybe her mouse heart was made to be beating that much faster. She relaxed.

"Oh darling, you could've made it a little bit more fun."

Qit'ria peered down over the side of the wheel, to see Kashehino's face looking back up at her. The panther lay on her back, pawing at Qit'ria's tail that was hanging down nonchalantly. Her paw passed through the tail, and Qit'ria couldn't feel a thing. She cursed herself silently. "Yep, forgot all about your tail darling."

Qit'ria moved over the side of the wheel and half fell, half jumped down. She nose dived right into the snow, burying herself completely. She found a bit of comfort in the tight embrace, but not necessarily in the cold chill that quickly permeated her body. She wriggled her muscles, particularly those in her hind legs, and began to scooch backward. Once she was out of the hole, she shook her body, trying to remove the snow, she'd seen plenty of animals do it.

But it didn't come nearly that easily. She shook her hindquarters, but her forebody didn't move. Her head twisted but her body remained still. She did manage to shiver as the snow still clung to her. And again. Then she realized her body was doing that on its own, but she could mimic it. After all, was shivering really that much different than shaking? She tensed up everything in her, then let it loose all at once, shaking a bit more wholly this time.

Beaming, she shook once more, and found some muscles near her butt she didn't realize were there before. She focused on those, and found that she could move her tail slightly. It didn't seem her tail could be moved itself, there weren't muscles within it. But she could at least move it a little bit. She tried shaking her hips, and while looking back at it, could see it moving a bit. That was helpful, particularly if she needed to hide it again.

Well, that was something at least.

"So what now little mouse?"

Qit'ria's stomach grumbled. And it made her wonder something. If she could get full from eating in this form, would she still be hungry when she returned to being a Sev'ryn?

"We eat."

Qit'ria walked over the snow, getting a bit more used to the four legged movements. It was stranger, but it wasn't too difficult to pick up. She moved back over to the cart looking way up above her. She sniffed at the air, her stomach rumbling. There was food up there. She knew it. Moving around the cart, she saw where the branches were pulled down and tied off, to provide some cover for it. But what it also did was give her a way up.

Walking over to the branch, she stepped up on the leaves. Slowly, carefully, she began to ease her way up the branch, using her forepaws as gripping hands, her hind paws for balance along with her tail. It surprised her how similar these paws seemed to her Sev'ryn hands. They could grip quite similarly, though instead of a thumb, there was an additional long finger. But with as long as they were, the gripping came easy. Paw over paw, she climbed up the branch, constantly having to wriggle her rump to keep her tail upon the branch with her, to keep her balance.

Eventually she was over the cart, and she slipped off, falling down upon an outstretched hafrein hide she kept in her cart, just to serve as a cover for her belongings. She thudded lightly and slid down it, coming to a stop upon the wood over her cart. She sniffed at the air, and saw what it was that she knew to be food. It was the offal and remnants of the meat from the mouse, the meat not currently being smoked. Her stomach grumbled.

Qit'ria walked over to it, sniffing at it, feeling her hunger only intensifying at the scent. She opened her mouth, and bit down on one of the organs, though she wasn't sure which. The meat flowed a variety of juices over her tongue, squishing loudly. She tore off a piece of it, and chewed it briefly before swallowing. It was delicious. She tore more and more off, barely taking time to breathe, not caring that the juices were splashing upon her face and fur. This was heaven.

She ate every morsel, ever scrap of flesh, meat, and organ, and she laid there on the wood, fat and content. Kashehino had joined her on the cart, and was looking at her bemused, tail flopping back and forth. The panther just chuckled.

After resting a bit on her full stomach, Qit decided it was time to change back. She moved to the end of the cart and hopped down into the snow. She walked her way over toward her pile of clothes in the snow. She buried into her clothing, seeking out the necklace she'd made from her finger, her self totem. When she found it, she took it gingerly in her fangs and pulled it away from the clothes out into the snow.

Once free of the smelly garments, she pressed her nose to the totem and closed her eyes. Just as she'd done earlier, she reached out with her soul, just a single tendril of her magic. She pushed it the through her body, and into the totem. There she felt her form, lingering. It felt... happy that she returned to it. She latched onto her piece of soul within it, and began to pull it back within herself, as a fisherman might with a catch. It was slow but steady work.

Once it was back within her, at the very center of her being, she unleashed it, focusing on her Sev'ryn form. She squeaked loudly in pain as her body began to expand. It stretched, and grew, like a balloon, as matter began to generate, to make up for what was missing. Qit'ria felt empty as she expanded upward. Her bones grew thin as they stretched and twisted, growing into her proper arms and leg bones. Her tail shrunk, disappearing into her backside. The fur stabbed itself back into her skin like thousands of needles. Her skin threated to tear as it stretched thin. Her face crammed back into itself as it went from elongated to flatter.

As her height returned, she felt searing in her chest as the curse marks returned, attached to this form. And soon, it was over, and Qit'ria was left there gasping, cold, naked against the snow. But she was whole. She was back to her natural form again. And she smiled. Yes, this power was going to be-- Qit'ria vomited into the snow, inches from her face, it splattering over her form. She felt a headache seeping in. And she groaned. She wanted to smile, but she just swore, and pulled herself up, to head to the river. She grabbed her clothes as she stomped that direction. She had no desire to smell that stench of herself ever again.

Qit'ria

Overview

Aye-aye, Qit! Lovely to see this thread, really enjoyed it. One tiny thing I'd say is that your translations are white text on a white background. That makes it rather difficult to read! I had a chuckle at the thought of how heavy an Aye-Aye's tail might be and I love the relationship between Qit and her imaginary friend. Not the best culinary experience for her, either. Poor Qit! PM me if I've missed anything!
