When he tilted her face to look at him, Velaine found herself stilling for a moment. The world stopped for just the briefest of thrills. She didn’t know why – didn’t want to know why. “That’s kind of you to say. Kinder than what most people would say.”
The young woman would have been content to simply stand there and ice her betrothed’s wrist until it got better. It didn’t occur to her that her words might set off a chain of unexpected events. But it seemed like Nathaniel had something else in mind.
Placing a hand on his shoulder to steady herself, Velaine took a deep breath and ignored the heat creeping up to her face. At least with her silver blood, she wouldn’t look incredibly pink in the cheeks. “It seems like that hand of yours is in better shape than you led me to believe.” Especially from the way he was holding her up right now.
The Krome didn’t know what sort of respond Nathaniel expected from her, but from their interactions in the forest, he should at least have an inkling of the young woman’s personality. Most challenge, she would likely counter with another challenge of her own. After all, Velaine would rather eat crap than have him think that he had some sort of power over her, of any kind. She knew he wanted her, but he needn’t know that she wanted him too. Yet.
Slowly, Velaine closed the distance between them, letting her lips brush against his cheek before hovering near his ear. Her entire body hummed as they were pressed closer to each other, but she paid no mind to it. “Maybe. Maybe not. I can’t quite decide.” She wanted to know how much sway she had over him. “Didn’t you say you don’t like it when you’re tempted by something you cannot have?”
