Ocean Around Scalvoris

“Mr DeWren, you’re taking tonight’s watch.”
It was a clear night tonight, a night where the clouds could be seen shining in the sky above, but the winds that blustered across the ocean were the kind strong enough to be commonly found during storms. They rocked the ship back and forth as it cut its course through the ocean, tugging at the hair and clothes of the sailors on board and kicking up waves that crashed into the side of the vessel and exploded into clouds of spray. It had been a long, hard day, and the sailors aboard the ‘Madame White’ were ready to hit the hammocks and call it a night, but as protocol dictated there always needed to be at least one person awake to man the crow’s nest so that pirates couldn’t sneak up on them in the night.
And tonight that watchman was Eugene DeWren. Or, as he was normally called when his appearance wasn’t transformed by the power of his Sesser mark, Tio Silver.
As thrilling as it was to chase down target ships and/or engage in battles with the crew in order to loot their treasure, sometimes the standard means of piracy could wear a little thin. Even the hardiest of pirates wanted a nice easy break sometimes where they could earn some decent cash with little effort, and it just so happened that making money with minimal effort was Tio’s specialty. Ever since their last voyage, where he had subdued that battle-hardened captain in a matter of seconds with his necromancy, Tio had become a well known figure among his crew, and so had no trouble being heard when he suggested an alternative plan for capturing their latest target; a brig from Rynmere laden with silks and other expensive fabrics. Using the power of his blessing he had altered his appearance and taken a new identity, that of Eugene DeWren, and signed up as a sailor aboard the Madame White waiting for the exact night when he would be assigned to the crow’s nest. The past few trials of swabbing decks and taking orders from some prick in a silly coat where about to be worth it.
Tio waited until the rest of the crew were sound asleep and then took a lantern up to the crow’s nest with him, flashing it three times into the night behind the ship and waiting for a reply. The Redthorn Pirate’s ship, The Fat Cow, had been tailing this one since it passed Scalvoris, sticking to the route plan Tio had leaked to them and only coming close enough to be seen for a few hours after the sun went down. The three flashes was the signal that he was the only one on night watch tonight, and therefor that they would be able to come closer to and board the ship without raising any alarms.
Three more flashes flickered out from the darkness, a signal that his message had been received. Tio left the lantern and clambered back down the rigging to the deck, taking out the dagger he’d had strapped to his leg all day. His real crew would be here soon, which meant it was time to move on to the second phase of his plan.
It was time to pay the captain a visit.
