[Caervalle Town] The Little Black Book

The 82nd Trial of Ymiden, Arc 719

Eliza had always considered herself to be; in a sense; a solitary child. It seemed like an odd stance to take, considering the nature of her birth and upbringing. Over the course of two full centuries and then some, she'd called dozens of individuals mother, father, grandmother, uncle. She'd even had those that she'd referred to as sister and brother. In spirit, some of them had temporarily filled the role. Especially Poppy, the most beloved of them all. But so far as she knew, there hadn't been a single blood connection between herself and any of them.

But it was more than that. Due to her own unique origins, the daughter of Ymiden had watched hundreds of loved ones pass from cradle to grave, while she'd been left behind. She'd been an observer of sorts as other's lives played through around her, and she'd felt it keenly. Each time one was lost, another would spring up to take their place. She'd spent a lot of time avoiding the act of wondering; was it the reason why she tended to avoid close, long lasting connections even now. The smallest amount of soul searching would probably confirm that it was.

Eberhardt was different. Besides the fact that Eberhardt was a monkey that had apparently sprung out of the fabric of Emea itself; and one who could converse with the best of them; the real reason was that Eberhardt seemed to shrug off the very notion of aging. She didn't age, at least not according to her. It was a blessing, so far as Eliza was concerned.

That morning, she was sitting outside her little cottage on the edge of Caervalle Town: Barefooted and cross legged on a wooden bench, surrounded by the little moat and the flock of colorful wood ducks that had flown in when she'd purchased the place. They'd never flown off again except for the occasional outing, and they were pretty excellent company so long as she kept them well fed. In her lap that trial was a small notebook, most of it's pages still blank. And by her side, a case of charcoal and pastel pencils. Eberhardt was beside her on the bench, snoozing in the warmth of the early morning sun.

Another consequence of having grown up feeling like an only child in a roomful of siblings, was that Eliza had developed a very good imagination. She'd become a daydreamer of the highest order. She'd surrounded herself with all sorts of imaginary worlds which she could live it to her heart's content; and filled them with imaginary contemporaries, acquaintances and friends. For a child, there had been something wonderful about companions that only she could see and hear.

Unlike living and breathing mortals, these characters never grew old. They were forever young, forever beautiful, plain, serious, whimsical or quirky. They were always where, and when, she'd expected them to be. And they'd never betrayed her or made promises that they'd never be able to keep. Unlike the many individuals that she'd crossed paths with over the past two and a half centuries; those with expiration dates stamped on their souls; in the eyes of a lonely and imaginative child, even with the flaws that she herself gave them, they'd been perfect.

In a sense, what was what Eliza was doing out in the garden that morning, was that she was dreaming up helpers and allies, and filling up page after page with them. Characters with their own personalities, style and mannerisms, their own views of the world. Each of their skill sets were of Eliza's own design. "Heartwork," she explained when Eberhardt asked. The tiny monkey had climbed up onto her shoulder, and was curiously peering down on Eliza's work. She didn't need to explain further. Eberhardt had seen Eliza's newfound fourth domain at work in Emea. But this time was different.

She could draw or paint all sorts of individuals who might be of some help to her in the heat of any moment. But she'd realized that when she was in a pinch, it was hardly the time to be dragging out her sketchbook and a charcoal pencil. So she'd decided to create a little black book full of helpers; those who she might call on at a bit's or trill's notice. "Will they go back in the book once they've come out? Eberhardt asked as she watched the latest drawing take shape. Eliza frowned and shook her head, ever so slightly. That was a very good question. "I don't think so," she replied. "I think that either they are killed, or if they're not, then they fade away after a break has gone by When one has gone, another will need to take their place."

Naturally, Eberhardt wanted to see how it worked. So Eliza turned the pages back to the very first drawing she'd done. "Would you like a cup of tea with milk, and one of those little square cakes to go with it?" She needn't have asked. For a creature small enough to fit inside a teacup herself, Eberhardt's appetite, for sweets in particular, was enormous.

Auntie Min. That's what the daugher of Ymiden had named the first character in her book; and while the ones who followed might not be called upon in order of appearance; Min was to take part in an experiment. As Min went, all the others in their time should follow. Eliza had chosen pastels, rather than plain charcoal pencils, as it wasn't unlike her to draw with color rather than black, white and shades of gray. Min was a middle aged woman. A human, short and plump in a faded green dress and a well worn apron stretched across her expanded middle.

Her hair, once very dark, Eliza had imagined, was now more silver than black and it was pulled up and put into a tidy bun. She had dark smiling eyes, rosy cheeks, wrinkles and laugh lines aplenty. There was something in the eyes, or the way she held the rolling pin in her left hand, that made her seem very kind, and motherly. Eliza had jotted down a few notes on the paper, just beneath the time worn and sensible shoes that were dusted with flour. Expert baker. Makes a wonderful cup of tea. A very good listener.

It was time for Auntie Mim to come to life. So cradling the open book in both of her hands, Eliza lifted it up and breathed a gentle puff of air across the page. A riot of color swirled and lifted itself up, spun itself into a pastel cyclone, and then leaped from the page. Only a few trills passed before all that color put itself into order again, in the shape of the plump and smiling Auntie Min. There, right in front of Eberhardt and Eliza.

"Well, I'd best get busy then!" the old woman said, all merry smiles and twinkling eyes; just as Eliza had drawn her; as she brushed her hands together, and a cloud of flour filled the air. Without waiting for even a word of acknowledgment from Eliza or Eberhardt, the woman turned on her heel and was promptly off to the kitchen. "She's a purposeful one, isn't she?" Eberhardt remarked, blinking back at the place where Min had just been; but was no more.

"I dreamed and drew her that way," Eliza replied with an amused smile, while turning back to her drawings. A warm drink and a tray of tiny cakes was nice, especially on a long and cold winter evening. But of all the helpers she'd draw, Mim was destined to be the least critical of them all. Eliza had put a lot of thought into that, and had dreamed up any number of potential emergencies and crises that she might some trial be party to.

What if she was became lost in the wilderness, and Darwin wasn't there with her, for her to follow as he sniffed his way home again? For that, an expert wilderness guide might be just the thing. She'd need someone who was an expert at surviving the wilderness. Someone who could also hunt, track and fish better than her, in case they got hungry. In that case, it might be better if they could also cook. But Eliza didn't want to seem helpless or greedy. So with that in mind and a charcoal pencil in her hand, Lucina began to take shape.

Lucina was a Sev'ryn of a stern disposition and one of very few words. Dark eyed and brown skinned, her dark braided hair, decorated with silver coin and feather, hung down to the curve of her hips; and those tightly clad in leather. Once the drawing was done, Eliza added her notes before moving on to the next. Excepting the cooking, of course. She'd just have to learn herself, or create another helper who could turn an expert spit on the fire.

Next came Ranulf. An impossibly large and broad shouldered human with bulging forceps and calves exposed beneath the hem of his kilt: Ranulf's hair, done again in pastels, was as red as red could be, an as wild as the seas during the stormy season. His eyes were impossibly green, his cheeks and nose pink, his long beard braded and strung with beads. Everyone needed a stong man, now and again. And judging by the axe in one of his hands and the ornately round shield in the other; and by the fiercest of gleams in his eyes, Ranulf would fit the bill perfectly.

One trial, Eliza would add more helpers and allies to her little black book. Maybe dozens of them. But on this particular morning, there was one more to be done. She hadn't planned to. But there it was, like an itch that couldn't help but be scratched, insisting she pick up her pencil again. A guide. Not just for navigating the wilderness, the cities or the seas; but something much deeper. And for that, Eliza needed a more magical and exotic creature than axe wielding humans and tea making matrons.

Simple line drawings, if done expertly, could be as beautiful and inspiring as the most detailed of images. And that was how Polaris took shape. Eliza loved her already. She was a bird unlike any other on Idalos, and she seemed to come right out of a dream. She was as graceful as any creature ever was, with a slender body and neck, and legs as long as a heron's. Her eyes were large, expressive, inquisitive and soft, and her wingspan exceeded her height four times over.

Polaris was beautiful, but that wasn't what made her so special. Though she was only a simple line drawing and would appear as such if Eliza ever called on her, she would glow and sparkle in the night, and rival the stars with her brilliance as she flew over the sea or the land. With that in mind, Eliza opened a small jar of paint that she'd brought with her, and with a soft, fine brush, she traced over the lines of her drawing with brilliant silver paint. Polaris woujld only fly at night, for that's where her brilliance came from. The moon and the stars themselves. An expert guide for body, mind and soul, Eliza wrote. Wise, compassionate and insightful.

"That one's nice," Eberhardt said, just as Eliza put down her pencil and dusted the drawing to better set it to the page. "You should call on her next?" Eliza smiled and shook her head. "Another time but not now. She's special."

Just as she said it, Auntie Min reappeared, this time carrying a small silver tray in her hands. 'Time's almost run out!" she said, tutting as she filled the cups and handed the tea cakes around. "I thought I might disappear in a cloud of flour and colors, and leave my cakes to burn. Here you are little one. Eat up," she added, and gave Eberhardt a little pat on the head.

It wasn't the sort of gesture that the monkey appreciated. But Eberhardt did appreciate Min's skills as a baker, and mumbled as much around a mouthful of cake. "Thank you Auntie Min. The tea is wonderful," Eliza said after a sip of said tea. "No need to fuss, dearie. I was happy to...." And then, before Auntie Min could say any more, she began to slough off powdery, pastel color, to fade, and then to pop in a last small explosion of red and green and blue in the air, before she was gone. All that was left of her, was a dusting of pink and blue on the grass. "That's it? Just like that?" Eberhardt wondered, and Eliza smiled. 'Just like that," she said, and gently flipped her book closed.

This was an interesting read with an interesting premise. I enjoyed the idea of a book that had characters that could come to life and keep company. I like how a lot of detail was given to the various characters of the book which allowed me to learn more about them. Enjoy the rewards.
