Syb's Development Stuff

The Thanatology Guild
aka the 'Morties', 'Burial Guild', 'Conjury', 'Pallbearers'.

A Viden-based Guild in which deals with matters regarding proper burial rites and corpse management. While not a secretive Guild, the means of entry are esoteric at best. Not that many tend to consider this Guild for employment, given its unsavory subject matter. However, it should be noted that some very bizarre individuals have been seen gaining entry, and even represent the Guild on day to day matters, leading many of a less than stable mindset to presume that this is a shell Guild ran by unseen forces.

In truth, this corpse management guild simply has another purpose than what's advertised.

Specializing in exorcism of both personal and structural, the Thanatology Guild is notably aggressive towards the undead. Especially in the outskirts of Viden itself, the Guild is active in attempts at solving matters that conventional authorities are not equipped to handle, employing not only hunters, but mediums. Higher ranking members of the Thanatology Guild are rumored to even be able to directly commune with supernatural entities on a daily basis, or hold some means of making demands of spirits.
Ranks

Initiate

The typical Initiate is someone who is unknowing of the true goings on of the Guild itself. They are employed as assistants and apprentices. Statistically, those that inhabit this rank tend to be damaged individuals with no other options. Orphans, veterans, transients, and foreigners.

Novice

Much like their Initiate counterparts, they are typically unknowing of the intention of the Guild. They are given minor jurisdiction over cremation and embalming of corpses, typically under the supervision of a higher ranking individual. While they are able to work, they are deemed to lack the knowledge to operate independently.

Journeyman

The bulk of the workers within the Mortuary. They are able to operate independently, but they are denied the ability to teach their trade to Initiates and Novices. These practitioners are allowed to operate beneath higher ranks without much problem. It is a case to case basis if they are inducted further.

Mortician

This rank is bestowed upon someone who is not only loyal to the Guild, but also able to teach their trade to someone beneath them. They supervise the lower ranks and ensure that the Mortuary works efficiently. More than one person can hold this rank, and typically, they understand the true purpose of the Guild.

Because they are trusted with such knowledge, they are expected to work as agents for the Guild itself, ensuring that the logistics allow for operations to continue.

Intelligencer

This is a rank in which is aware of the Guild's purpose in all cases. While their direct influence in direct operations is negligible, they are the reason that information flows towards the Guild rather than the nebulous oblivion of obscurity. They are in charge of making rounds to towns and hamlets, returning with information regarding any supernatural contracts in need of being done.

Medium

Theses men and women are known for their ability to minorly commune with the undead. They have a practical knowledge of what binds a ghost to Idalos, and the various risks associated with their dabbling. They handle minor issues, such as children refusing to meet the Twins, or non-criminal mischief.

Exorcist

These men and women are the bulk of the Thanatology Guild's true purpose. They are trained in the practicalities of banishment and destruction of supernatural threats. They are accompanied by combatants who ensure that they are not abusing their knowledge, and for their own protection. Due to the risks associated with their work, however, they are given a heft amount of sway within the Guild's operations.

Coldhunter

Coldhunters are known within the Guild for efficiency over flashy shows in their combat styles. They exist to slay any supernatural threat unleashed by an Exorcist, and in worst cases, execute the Exorcist should they become deeply possessed with a spirit, or show any intention of being too corrupted in their psyche to make a rational judgement regarding the punishment of a supernatural entity.
