Trees, falling in the forest (Graded)

44th of Ymiden, 719

44th of Ymiden 719

The untamed wilderness of Melrath is vast and encompasses frigid mountain ranges, glacial fields, deep alpine lakes, dark ancient forests as well as the expansive shoreline of the nation. Here creatures and spirits dwell together in the remote places of the world, far from the hustle and bustle of civilization.

Trees, falling in the forest (Graded)

44th Ymiden, 719
H
e knew something was off when Blue refused to follow the trail. It didn’t matter how often he would point her at the spoor, the dog would have none of it; whining and growling until Alaric gave up and dismounted to read the tracks himself. Blue would tail him, hesitant and in some distance and it was her nervousness more than anything that filled him with trepidation.

Alaric had first spotted the footprints in the soft, red loam of a river bed when watering the horse. A straight line of tracks, deep where the earth was soft, and barely visible where it was not. Deer and other game in search for water had rendered the tracks a challenge to read. Eerily human, it seemed whatever had left them moved at a steady, precise pace. Too precise for any beast he knew, even those few he had seen walk on two legs.

Maybe they were human. He wasn’t sure he trusted his skills to tell for certain. Not when half the forest had crossed over the tracks already.

It was curiosity more than anything that set him on the trail.

Curiosity, and a vague sense of unease, whenever he looked at Blue, stalking along behind him, ears flat against her skull.

Both horse and dog in his wake, Alaric pushed away from the river bank and deeper into the forest. The high trunks of ancient trees stretched to the horizon. Shadows crowded the thick undergrowth and where the sun didn’t break through the foliage, the air was cool despite the advancing season.

Tracks, well-discernible if trampled, turned into smudges of red earth and lumps of dried loam as the ground grew harder. Footprints, once numerous, became rare, then vanished completely. For a time, Alaric followed the general direction of the spoor deeper into the forest. The trail had veered little since departing from the creek and he hoped it wouldn’t start now. At first, it appeared he was lucky. Here and there, he spotted tracks. A partial print at the edge of a puddle. A crumble of red dust along the way. The one or broken branch.

Then, suddenly, nothing. He continued for one break; two.

Blue, ears perked, came to trot beside him.

“You wouldn’t happen to have changed your mind about following these tracks, would you?” Alaric questioned as he looked down on her. Blue yawned—and stopped in her tracks.

Alaric tensed. He looked around, unable to make out much. Too many trees, too little light. Already he was about to push on when something broke through the thicket to his far left. Blue began to bark. Alaric almost lost his balance as his horse swerved to the side, eyes wide. With a curse, he held onto the reigns until the trembling animal came to a halt.

What now?

Resting a hand on the horse’s muzzle, Alaric searched the periphery—and listened.

☵ The path along the river was endless, but the viper didnt mind. The peace and quiet was calming to him, not to mention he had the company of the two snakes. The slithered along beside him as he trekked, curving in and out around the trees of the forest.

〖"You seem far calmer than usual Dosan."〗 the black one whispered, looking to the viper.
"Its Nasod, Sombro"
he hissed back, keeping his gaze on the horizon.

Sombra snickered watching as Kaz leaped into a nearby tree. It was good to see those echoes from his other self totem carried over. His tail swayed back and forth as he surveyed the area.

He couldnt see much, the denseness of the forest obscuring his line of sight. He decided it was best to keep moving, no need to stay in one place for too long. It wasn't like he was worried about any of the local fauna attacking him.

Leaping through the trees he finally found his way through most of it, landing along the ground with enough noise to alert the local animals. Looking around he found he was no closer to a city than he was when he first arrived breaks earlier.

Then out of the corner of his eye, he saw movement, coming from his left. Leaning against a tree he watched as the man and his animals approached. Maybe they could tell him where in Idolas he was.

"Hey, can you tell me where I am? I kinda crash landed along the river a few miles back earlier this trial and have no clue where I am."
he asked, looking the man over, his tail swaying back and forth in anticipation. He looked behind the male at the dog and smirked. ☵

Re: Trees, falling in the forest

I
t was well past noon by the time Alaric found the bird. The giant beast had died on a small clearing crowded with fireweed, impaled on a branch wider than Alaric’s arm. Even in death, with blood streaking its plumage rust-brown and its cadaver bloating in the mid-trial heat, it was a magnificent sight to behold.

Feathers, blue as the sky in mid-Saun, shimmered in the early afternoon sun. Its talons, long and dark, were viciously curved; made to snatch up small game or maybe fish. Of the head, removed and cast aside, little remained.

Alaric found himself drift closer despite the sweet, tell-tale stink of rot.

Offal gathered on the forest floor where the branch had ripped the bird’s abdomen wide open. Some scavenger or other had eaten its fill before Alaric’s arrival, scattering scraps of innards over the lush vegetation. Flies buzzed in the air. Blue scurried closer, then stopped. Warily the bitch sniffed at some dark smeared across the ground.

On his horse, Alaric frowned at the carcass.

Whatever events had led up to the bird finding its untimely end, they eluded him.

Old unease curdled in the pit of his stomach. What scavenger tore off the head of a carcass and left the easy spoils of meat and guts untouched? None Alaric had crossed path with. Momentarily, he thought of the tracks he had followed in the morning, then pushed aside that thought too. Whatever had left the spoor had moved like a ghost; unheard and unseen. A lot of effort only to make a mess of a bird.

Alaric stirred his horse closer to the cadaver. What small hopes he had held to scavenge a scrap of meat himself where thwarted by the cloying smell surrounding the beast. Tunic pulled up over the nose, he instead gathered a good two hand full of feathers and retreated; away from the carcass and the clearing both.

To his left, the sound of running water echoed among the trees. Alaric kicked his horse into motion. Blue darted ahead, soon to vanish in the undergrowth. The murmur of the river grew louder in the distance. Before long, the familiar sight of the Vyrmur drifted into view, a silver band snaking among high trees.

He had looped back to the waterside at last.

And he had only wasted half a day to satisfy his damnable curiosity.

For a time, Alaric rode in silence. He had his eyes on the path ahead when a voice from the side caught his attention. His eyes found the lean figure of a young man leaning against a nearby tree. He brought his mare to a stop.

“Who’s asking?” he called over, eyes on swaying reptilian tail that coiled around the stranger’s feet.

"Someone who is rather turned around. I kinda crashed landed a ways down the river, in the direction over there."
he pointed, which would have been the direction where the Storm Strike had been, well what was left of it.
"My bird crashed from exhaustion and I'm not sure exactly where it decided to die and leave me stranded. Care to help a traveler by telling him where he is?"

He was expecting some sort of hostility from the man and his animal. It wasn't every day you see someone like Nasod, and he was sure it was unsettling for any normal person. If there was an off chance he was a mage the viper would feel a little better, but regardless the serpent was ready.....hand ready to take his blade from its sheath and defend himself.

For now however, he would play nice.....well as nice as he could. This man was far more useful to him alive than dead. He was the first sign of mortal life in this place and could tell him more than he could learn by venturing on his own. Plus he was tired and the thought of having to gather his own information was not on the agenda. ☵

nd someone opposed to giving a name, too, Alaric observed as he nudged his horse to a halt. A yew-wood bow hung from the back of his saddle and the leather-wrapped hilt of a sword poked from a scarred scabbard at its front, but the bow was unstrung and Alaric made certain the stranger could see his free hand rest empty against his thigh. He didn’t draw any closer.

Grass and hardy shrubbery filled the expanse between them, but the vegetation showed no signs of passage from man nor beast, and how the Outlander had crossed it without leaving as much as a shining on the tall grass was anyone one’s guess. It seemed as if he had appeared before the tree out of nowhere. Maybe he had.

A moment longer, Alaric studied the stranger ahead. It was clear, he was another foreigner. Another sorcerer. The second he had come across in less than a fortnight. Melrath’s borders had opened but some seasons ago and Alaric wondered if he was witnessing the tidings of a changed time. Maybe sorcerers raining down on the forest on their exotic beasts would become a more common sight before long.

Alaric’s lips pursed at his private joke and straightened in his saddle.

“You are in Melrath,” he called over to the stranger. “This is the Myrkvior forest and that’s the Vynmur beside us.”

Then, maybe, in the light of his most recent encounter or because he lacked faith in the other man being fortunate enough to own a map, he added, “…you are north of Uthaldria, the hereditary homelands of the Lotharro, and south-west of Sirothelle and the lands the Immortal Faldrun lays claim to.”

Alaric had leaned over the saddle to spit out at the Immortal’s name and the mention of Lothars both but now his attention swung back to the stranger. “Do they hunt mages in the south now?”, he questioned. “I don’t know of many travelers who would risk their only mount like that.”

"Melrath huh?"
so he was far from Quacia that was for sure. The viper looked around his surroundings as it was all still so new to him. This was definitely a realm out of his norm, and was still getting used to being outside of Quacia.

As freeing and liberating as it was, it was still nerve-wracking as well. He had to be on guard no matter what as he wasn't sure how the masses would perceive him and his outward appearance, especially now that he looked more reptilian than human.

The man spoke again, denoting exactly where the viper geographically, and the mention of the Lothar homeland being to the north of where he is now, made his eyes light up, but caused him to hiss as well.

Part of him wanted nothing to do with the Lothar homeland, but another part of him was relieved that if he wanted to find Fridgar, he could. To the other place, he had no idea where that was. It was entirely new to him.

A breeze lifted through the area as he pondered his next few options. Though at the last of the new man's words he chuckled. just where did that assumption come from?
"No, but I needed to escape. It was time for me to go."
It was true, as there was truly nothing left for him in south.

"I know I look rather intimidating, but do you mind showing me to the city."
he asked, hoping that the man would be kind enough to show him, or at least point him in the right direction. ☵

laric noticed how the man’s expression changed at the mention of the Lothar but remained quiet. He shifted his weight in the saddle, then lifted a shoulder at the assertion of the Outlander that he must look intimidating.

“When I was a boy, an old witch lived in a nearby village,” he said, as he kicked his horse into motion.

“She was tall as a man and marcid like the gnarled trunk of an ancient beech tree, with skin so thin you could see blue veins writhe beneath the surface like worms. Her hair was long and white and shaggy and where her eyes should have been, there was nothing, just pallid, wrinkled skin.” Alaric straightened in his saddle. “But she could see. She would look at a woman and know she was with child. She would look at a man and know he was cheating on his wife. And everyone knew she could foresee a storm long before the first clouds darkened the sky.”

There had been other rumors too. That she could walk straight into the woods and return with the most poisonous plants to be found. That she did have eyes, but if she looked at you, you would die and that she had predicted the death of a dozen villagers over the years. It had been a common game among children to goad their fellows into asking about their future—but to Alaric’s knowledge, no one had ever dared to tempt fate quite like that.

He knew he hadn’t.

One last time he looked at the swaying reptilian tail and then away.

“I have seen mages before,” was all he said as he turned towards the river.

Tall grass brushed the flank of his horse as he led it closer to the embankment. He nodded towards the water, breaking white against the rocks that lined the bed. “If you follow the river you will sooner or later reach Raelia. It’s a large city by the sea. Three walls encompassing each other, and the houses are made of stone the deep blue of the sea—you can’t miss it. Once you are there ask someone to show you to the home of the Aesir… some of their members are sorcerers and witches, too. They will want to meet you.”

☵ It was nice to see someone hold themselves and keep their composure from seeing his appearance. This man was very helpful, though the explanation about the witch was unneeded. Though still, it was insightful to the type of man he was.

The reptilian eyes of Nasod's rolled over the man, finding him his rugged appearance to be quite appealing. He hoped all the natives looked as good as this one, but then the viper hushed such thoughts to the back of his mind. He wasn't here to sleep with the locals but to make a new identity for himself here.

The man's directions were very helpful, and the viper looked in the direction he spoke of. The good thing was he could at least find civilization if he kept along the river. He bowed to the man and adjusted his bag with his belongings in them, making sure his totems were secure on his person before turning to part ways from the helpful stranger.

"Thank you for your help stranger, I hope to repay that kindness one trial soon."
he said waving to the man as he began to walk away. He was going to make good on that, he wouldn't be like he was back in Quacia and Helice. ☵

Re: Trees, falling in the forest

A fun introduction to Melrath, and making acquaintances. Gotta love contrasting personas meeting for the first time, the tension at the start was something that was palpable and enjoyable. I can't really say that I found anything that particularly stood out as a problem, however. The flow was consistent, and watching your characters interact was a blast.

Enjoy your rewards!
