Pervading Darkness - Day 2

Dale'ee and Tark had awoke early the following morning. The early morning twilight peaking curiously through the canopy of the trees. Trees that now stood still only disturbed by the brief billows of wind that made it's way through the Lori. A stark contrast to how the plants had behaved just the day before. No one had been severely injured, and given the stories of what had transpired, it was nothing short of miraculous. Cal had stayed up much of the night, keeping watch over the makeshift campsite, ensuring a safe nights sleep for all.

The three were busy preparing a meal for the group of adventurers, and as each of you awoke you'd be greeted with friendly, though serious, smiles. "Things are only going to get more intense as we move further towards the badlands. Eat, get your strength up, and we will set out in a break," Tark spoke as the other two men continued to work on the meal. Those that partook of the meal found it very filling and satisfying, and Cal seemed rather pleased with himself. "Dig in, enjoy. More fun and adventure awaits!"

So the groups set out, with Dale'ee and Tark leading. Cal took up position near the rear of the group, but freely spoke to anyone who chose to converse. Things in the Lori caught their attention, some more than others. "If you see anything you wish to check out, feel free to explore," Tark spoke pointing off to different things as they traveled, "as before, you go in pairs. No one goes alone." The wood of the Lori creaked as the wind blew through the trees, almost as if the trees themselves were reaching out, enticing those that walked their shaded paths to come explore their unknown and perhaps unseen secrets.

Creatures padded unseen, birds sung songs to the very air around them, and plants stretched as high as they could. Truly, the Lori was an entirely different world than that of Desnind proper. Calls and strange noises also filled the air, periodically ceasing the otherwise cheerful songs, and different things, perhaps, caught the attention of those that traveled.

So the group traveled onward towards their destination, but by the time the mid-trial had hit and they stopped for a quick meal ... things had happened and choices had been made ....

OOC Stuff

Rules for this thread are simple.
I control the NPCs, you control your pc only.
Please don't assume the outcome of any action, I'll determine that. And, have fun!
I want to be clear that I expect you to play to your skill level. If you don't, then there will be IC consequences.
I will reply on the 17th of April.

Encounters

In the morning of the 51st Ashan, the group will encounter a number of things. There are some rules for that.
1. I will give you a choice of things which you might spot / see / hear. You may respond to one (or none) of them. No more.
2. If you are responding to an "encounter" you must take one person with you. That must be a PC (Cal counts as a PC even though he's being played by a mod - reach out to me on Discord or here and we can discuss what he does and it can be included with your post) as the guides are staying on the path. If a PC takes you with them - you're assumed to go along. That way, you might end up in more than one.
3. No encounter is entirely what it seems.....

The encounters are as follows:
Flora A ~ hazardous flora
Flora B ~ food flora
Flora C ~ unkown flora
Fauna A ~ bird of interest
Fauna B ~ insect of interest
Fauna C ~ animal in the distance (heard)
Unknown sound
Unknown "corner of the eye"

In your post, please explain what you saw (expand on the bare bones I've given you) even if you then choose not to follow it. If you go and explore, say who you are taking with you. That will be my next post.

Objectives

During your next post you have the following objectives:
 ! Message from: Must Do
Describe your chosen encounter, your reaction to it and (if relevant) your companion.
Describe (in an ooc at the end) what your pcs reaction to being chosen as a companion would / will be (do this even if you're the last to post, please). Choose one (1) from: Very reluctant, reluctant, neutral, eager and very eager. Also choose one from Very unfriendly, unfriendly, neutral, friendly, very friendly. Thanks!

 ! Message from: Can Do
Interact with Cal. He is so willing to just talk. Reach out to me for details on what's said/shared, if you choose to speak with him!

Rakvald snored loudly as he subconsciously encroached on Cirrina's space in his sleep. Wherever she was sitting or laid down the night before, Rakvald had plopped down next to the mer. Without waiting too long or getting fussed, he promptly fell asleep.

As he was coming around, he smelled the scent of food. Smelled good. His snoring was interspersed with grunting and snorting. Finally, a rather large gadfly flew into his mouth and he started awake, swallowing as he did. "Mmm... What smells tasty?" He said, then he turned to Cirrina and reached to push her away. "Ey! Cirrina, wake time to eat!"

He went along waking everybody up in turn, until everyone was ready to have their breakfast. Only then did he sit down himself to eat.

He was delighted to find that Cal had decided to try out his bacon jerky sandwich, and was serving them up with a slice of cheese and garlic paste. "MMMM!" Rakvald groaned as he ate, blurting out words as crumbs blew from his mouth, "Dish is good!"

Once he was done, he began fastening his armor again, and putting his knives in their sheaths. He looked around, and smelled the fresh air. He farted lightly in surprise when someone announced it was time to get a move on. Then they were off.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
While they walked along the horses, Rakvald thought he could smell something that was tasty. Was that? It couldn't be! Truffles!?
With a smile, he grabbed Cal and rushed off in search of the pleasant smell he'd caught wind of.
He had a good nose for truffles, having raised a number of sniffers in his time. He thought for sure this food flora would be something similar.
"Cal! Truffles are near! I know it!" He chattered excitedly as he led him off the trail, full tilt. "You gotta try them. Nothing better than cave truffles! You like mushrooms, ya?"
WIthout waiting for the traveller to respond, Rakvald got on all fours and began sniffing at the ground, trying to locate the truffle. When he thought he hit on something he began digging with his hands at the ground. He felt something roundish, like a truffle, and without waiting put it in his mouth.
Re: Pervading Darkness - Day 2
Sleep hadn't been something that had come easy to her in the weeks since her maiming at sea. If it wasn't the dull throbbing in her wounded arm or the blurs of color from her ruined eye it was nightmares of the day. Twisted illusions that shook her from slumber and prevented her from sleeping after she was awake. The only days she truly slept were after several days of little sleep. The night before had been one of those nights. She'd found herself too spent from the days excitement and had passed out despite her pain. Then several hours before daylight the dreams had shaken her awake. She'd not cried out. Not stirred violently. Not done anything she was aware of that may have woken others. Damp in cold clinging sweat. Ragged breathing for a moment as she steadied herself and made sure she was awake. Then...
Then she'd rolled away to put her back to the rest of the group and stared out into the darkness. Just lain there staring into the dark. Trying to shut out the voices she heard that called her weak and unfit to be a Naerikk. That urged her to expunge herself from the realm of the living. After all, she had no value now as a damaged Naer that was missing one of her clawed shadow hands. As she'd lain there feeling a mixture of self pity and nothingness the world had come to life around her. Animals began to move about. Birds, or what sounded like birds in this strange forest, sang from the trees. Things moved in the underbrush some distance away. Only fools believed that the forest was a quiet place. The forest was a cacophony of noise if you weren't so self absorbed you to notice it.
Behind her others stirred and she sat up. She didn't bother faking like she'd been asleep. The act wasn't needed any further. Pulling her cloak from her shoulders and the tunic she wore over her body glove she moved towards the Mer. "Here," she said, "The sun is as much your enemy as it is ours. We have markings to protect us from its gaze. You do not. Soak the tunic and wrap yourself in it. The cloaks water proof and can be closed completely to shield you from the the suns gaze." Turning away as she dropped the cloak and tunic on the ground within reach for the Mer, Sila walked over to where breakfast was being made and only took a little. She wasn't much for eating in the morning but she supposed that the trouble had been made so she might as well eat some.
Finishing what little she had decided to eat she found herself needing to sit down. Her right eye, unclear and unfocused as it was, was making her dizzy as her mind tried to compensate and make her left pick up its slack. Closing both eyes she held her head. "Rose," she called out as she tried to steady her stomach, "We hate to keep asking you to aid us but would you mind tying something over our bad eye, please?"
Sometime later, whether Rose aided her or not, Sila was beside her horse holding the reins as they moved along. Watching as Rakvald and someone else, she hadn't seen who, rushed off into the bushes she couldn't help but feel a slight bit of concern for Rakvald and the whoever he'd taken with him. The last time this had happened they'd been ambushed. Hopefully this would not be the case this time.
Re: Pervading Darkness - Day 2
The Mer was not a morning person.
She was not a any time of day person if she were being honest, and she was. At the moment she'd rather be curled up happily anywhere away from the thrice damned suns with Clay as her blanket. Marin was going to more than rue the day he thought of this insipid idea to send her off on a quest and it was only the smell of food that kept her from lashing out at Rakvald in the same manner. Though that did not stop her teeth from snapping angrily at the air. But Cir was never one to turn down food, no matter how irritable she was, she would get up and eat it. Only when she had eaten more than her full share did she settle into waking, a glance at her form telling her she had truly lost the gem and that her time on land would now be limited. Once more annoyance surged through her but was tempered but pure and utter confusion.
The invalid was offering her the cloak she had hid herself in.
Cir was half tempted to reject the offer but even in this form the sun dried her out even if it couldn't necessarily damage her irreparably yet. Either the woman now thought they were friends since they battled the same beasts and listened to each others insipid stories or she was pragmatic. The foremost would be stupid and dangerous though the Mer would let dead weight rot rather than an olive branch of health. Still, when they fought beasts again, as they no doubt would on this idiotic trip, more bodies for fodder were better than none. The imaged slight of being considered fodder made her lips curl just as her tentacle curled around it as if it were shark shit. "Thank you."
But it was help all the same so grudging apology left her lips as she snatched it away to soak. The cool of it cooled her tempers ever so slightly, the oppressive damp cloak making her feel more at home than she had any right to be on land. And then they were moving deeper into the woods, Cir following Rakvald though her eyes roved to everyone periodically and noting with some dark amusement that none were quiet so eager to trample off and 'explore'. Strange how they feared the very thing thing they had willingly gone after.
Her companion seemed to have the same lack of interest until he began to yell about some sort of food he swore he could smell. Though breakfast had been filling Cir herself would not turn down more food though she made no effort to follow Rakvald. If he wished to get his head bit off that was his prerogative, but as she backed up to let him sift through the dirt like some over eager child something flickered on the edge of her vision making her head snap round, eyes narrowing. But no matter how much she scanned the foliage around them she could not seem to properly see what it was. Her lips thinned as she took in the shadows any tree left and called out softly to the nearest person, "Did you see that?"
Rose had always liked the odd and unusual. As a child she had always been the sort to go off the beaten path, to her father’s dismay. Perhaps that was why she was starting to take a distant liking to Sila. She had never met one of the”shadow daughters” before and more than that she had never met someone so deeply impacted by their wounds. In a way Sila was far more honest than any of the others in their little party. Cal undoubtedly had many secrets, Rakvald had a sort of strange old wisdom in his eyes that left one unnerved, Cir of course it turned out had been a Mer this entire time, and Olu was a strange and soft spoken as they came. But Sila was forced to wear her secrets on the outside. Even Rose’s own secrets had been hidden from herself until this journey.
But everyone knew that the Naer had been through something terrible. Rose knew perhaps more than the others that the one thing the wounded and sick hated, was the look of pity the people around them cast in their direction. No one enjoyed feeling weak or helpless, especially those whose strength had been taken from them abruptly and violently. Rose remembered he sailor who had arrived at the Medicine House when she had first moved to Desnind. He had refused to have his leg amputated, even though it would have saved his life. The red haired woman had always assumed that he had only wanted to retain his ability to walk, but now Rose wondered if instead he was afraid of the cripple that he would become afterwards...even if he had lived.
Whether or not Sila realized it; it took far more strength to keep pushing forward after what she had been through than she perhaps realized. In that way Rose respected her. With a soft nod Rose helped her tie a clean strip of cloth over her bad eye.
“It’s no trouble.” The woman replied with a subtle smile.
After an excellent breakfast provided by the ever mysterious Cal, they all headed off deeper into the shadowed path that pushed through the Lori. Tyr, the bear spirit silently padded along beside Rose’s horse as they advanced closer and closer toward the Badlands.
“You’ve been quiet.” The green clad woman commented softly.
“I’ve thought it best if you figured things out on your own.” He grunted with low rumble deep in his furry chest. Interwoven bands of light glittered within the spirit’s fur. Tyr was a strange beast. He could be perfectly chatty one moment and then resigned to silence for trials when it suited him.
The amber eyed healer frowned irritably before snorting derisively at the spirit.
“Did you always know? That I was...different?” She asked in a hissing whisper, trying her best to keep her voice down from the others. Granted she looked a little silly talking to what appeared to be thin air.
Tyr finally slowed to turn and gaze at her carefully. It was almost like he was going to answer her question when he sighed and resumed plodding along.
“Wisdom must be earned.” he replied.
Rose only huffed and frowned sourly. “Well aren’t you useful...” she muttered dryly.
Right at that moment there was a strange sound that echoed off in the distance to the western side of the path. It sounded like an animal of some kind, either a yowling feline or maybe even the brash call of a stag. Rose carefully slid off the back of her bay mare and quickly checked the bow on her back and the quiver at her hip before stepping toward the edge of the trail.
“I’m going to go take a look, want to come along Olu?” The woman asked with a twitch of a smile over her shoulder. The soft spoken lad reminded her of the other hunters in Desnind. It would be good to have someone like that on hand when snooping around for a strange animal. She might have asked Sila to come along, but there was a haunted look in the woman’s eyes after the battle with the beasts on the first day. The amber eyed healer knew trauma when she saw it, sometimes it was best to simply give someone the space to heal on their own.
Hopefully with the young Sev’ryn in tow the woman slowly picked her way through the emerald shadows of the forest. Every now and then she would tentatively reach out with both her hands and her mind to make contact with the flora surrounding them. Her fingertips would brush a leaf and almost like an echo in the dark she could somehow “feel” it’s lifeforce within her mind.
Again the call of the strange animal sounded ahead and Rose found herself pulling out her bow and fitting an arrow to the string.
“Did you hear it?” she asked quietly to her companion, even though she already knew the answer.
Rose slowly took cautious steps forward, wondering to herself if the creature would be friend or foe. Given the events of the previous day, she had to prepare for the worst.
Waking up to the smell of food was nice, and I was surely hungry from the night before, the battle taking most of what strength I had from me. Looking around I was also glad to see that i had not harmed anyone, that Asiwaju was dormant for some reason. Tha if anything else was my true relief.
Eating I looked around the camp, looking to all of those who came on this expedition. We were surely not the most cohesive group but we were the ones brave enough to take on this endeavor. Many of us were not suited for something like this than others, to which my eyes fell on the shadow lady.
She had been through so much, so much more than I could ever have imagined. Part of me felt ashamed that I worried about Asiwaju when someone had been torn apart, yet still had the strength to keep moving on, living each trial the best they could. I admired her strength, though part of me envied her for it.
After the meal was done we saddled up and headed further into the Badlands. Part of me was scared, more so for the fact that I always thought that Lissira ruled those parts. We were riding straight into it too, in order to protect our home. As much as I feared to go, I hated Lissira even more, and if this would through her plans in disarray whatever they may be, then I was fine with it.
As we went along Tark spoke of the many things that we could look into and I wasn't too keen on going, but the healer wished for me to come with her. Flashing a polite smile I nodded and dismounted my horse, clutching my ax as we went forth. I wanted to ask her about the trial before, but the sound of what I could only hope to be an animal cut me off.
"Yeah I heard loud and clear that time, be careful."
I said standing at her left as she readied an arrow onto her bow. My ax was poised and ready too, I wasn't going to let our only healer get hurt if this thing attacked us. ➸
The Encounters
The nose is a powerful tool. A powerful tool indeed, and Rakvald followed his like a toucan follows fruit. The forest was full of many strange, odd flora and fauna, some common place in the world, others wholly unique to the environment that the intrepid pair now traveled. Truffles, though they were rare, definitely made their way around the flora of the world. As such, Rakvald was accustomed to the unique smell of these delicate treats and he knew what he found had that airy note that marked the truffle. Rash as the Lotharro might be, it seemed luck shown on him this day, and it had indeed been a truffle he'd found. Though, there wasn't just the one ...
Just as strong as the nose, are the eyes, though in a place such as the Lori, things aren't always what they seem. Be it a trick of the light, the wind playing at the foliage, or just some creature having its fun. Either way things were seen. What that thing was though, was hard to say, but it had caught the attention of the Mer. Initially it was but a mere flash, the briefest of glimpses, but as she focused, she saw it again. An odd mix of fur and scale, but whatever it was, it was fast. All things possessed a natural curiosity, no matter how cautious they were, eventually the need to know won out. For this creature though, it was briefly lived. A slender head peered through the shadows, scale and fur gleaming softly in the dampened light under the canopy, and then it was gone again, the only evidence was the shuttering of the bushes it had been in....
Then there were the ears. The lori was full of sounds. Birds chirping and singing, leaves rustling in the wind, and noises of a distraught nature. It was the latter that had caught the attention of Rose and Olu. Distance played a trick with sounds, distorting and changing them from their true nature, their original form, and as such it initially sounded like a distressed animal, but as the pair grew closer the reality became more apparent. In a small clearing ahead of them, the pair saw what appeared to be two women fighting. One was easily overpowering the other, but from their viewpoint they could see that one wasn't exactly a woman. Yes, it had the shape of a woman, but the arms were ... well vines. The other woman, the one doing the majority of the protesting, was fighting against the pull of the vine like lady. It was clear she did not want a hug from the plant woman.
Encounters
Random dice rolls. Aren't they fun? One was good, the other two were interesting. No bad one's yet this round.
Rak: You've found a small cluster of truffles .... and something else. I'll leave it for you to decide what that else is. Feel free to hit me up on Discord if you want to discuss what it is.
Cir: Well now. You have seen something that not many others have seen. An Etojere. What to do, what to do. Will curiosity get the better of Cir?
Rose & Olu: Interesting. Desnind and the Lori don't have many monsters, but the ones they do have are known to the locals. The vine wreathed "woman" is a Mulier Colletis. It is currently trying to hug another woman, and isn't taking no for an answer. The Mulier has not spotted you, yet. If you choose to engage, please play within your skill level. Make it clear if you make any noise to summon the others or not, feel free to nudge them in Discord about it so that they can post accordingly, if they so choose. Please don't assume any of the actions about the mysterious other woman.
Sil: You have opted out of an encounter, and as such are still with the guides on the main path. You may make small talk with them. Depending on the choices of others, your options might open up a bit more, so nudge them if you need to.
Feel free to adlib your encounters a bit, and poke me in discord if you need clarification on anything, and above all else, have fun!
Kneeling by the ditch he’d dug, he plucked the truffle out of the ground where it lay, and put it on his tongue. It had a salty and earthy taste that was far superior to any truffles or mushrooms that grew in Quacia. He was amazed! He took just one more bite of the rest of the truffles, leaving the next one unfinished in his hand. To his surprise, it curbed his hunger enough that he didn’t immediately finish the second.
But there was something else, a bit of light green and bramble in the ditch… no, it was a sapling of some kind. He gingerly uncovered it, digging it out of the ground. There he found a sapling with it’s roots stuck into a bag of soil, from which he presumed some of the truffles had fallen out of. When he realized the truffles were meant to nourish the tree, he felt slightly guilty. Not too much though, afterall plants were plants and they didn’t feel things, did they? But then he remembered the peculiar event that happened the day before, with Rose and her command over the vegetation, and was given cause for doubt. This doubt gave rise to a slight twinge of guilt, as he put the half-eaten truffle back into it’s soil bag.
Then he used the twine that kept the bag wrapped around the base of the sapling’s trunk to keep anymore from spilling out. ”Sorry little tree.” He said in vahanic, smiling sadly. It looked so sick, like it was on the verge of dormancy. ”Since I stole your lunch, I’ll give you a bit of my life to help nourish you.”
He set the small sapling on the ground, upright. With his right hand, he caressed the base of the trunk with his hand. He’d never used graft healing on plants before, but presumed the principles were similar. He could leech some of the vitality from the flesh of his right hand, and transfer it into the base of the plant. Whether this did anything, he would lift his left hand, and caress the few leaves the sapling was sporting. Regardless of whether or not it was revitalized by any of this, he took the sapling in his hands, by the soil bag. Then, nodding to Cal that they ought to get back, headed for the guides.
When he saw them through the trees, he waved. ”Hey yous.” He said in common. ”Lookie what I find?” He held up the Chieja Oludibo sapling, for all to see. ”I tink dis would look good in my garden. I find it half dead and buried in ground, who would do so to a nice tree?”
ooc info
Splinter rolled some dice when I asked him if I could’ve had Rakvald find a Chieja Oludibo sapling. Apparently the roll was successful?
Re: Pervading Darkness - Day 2
No one paid much attention to the Mer, too lost in their own findings but she moved to Rakvald and smack his arm, none too gently with her tentacle, her eyes never leaving whatever it was she had spotted. She could have swore it was something and it still seemed to be close by, and Cir would be damned if they would be caught unawares again. "You found salad. Wonderful. Now look--do you see that?"
She pointed, unsure if she wanted to follow it, Rakvald to kill it for her or just to see if she was seeing things. Regardless she stepped forward as if she couldn't help herself, pulling back the hood of the cloak she had been given to see better. Were those claws she spotted? Her eyes narrowed and she debated calling out to the others as well, in case it was a threat. At the same time, if she didn't let them know, it could eat them first while Cir found somewhere else or readied herself to make use of their unknowing sacrifice.
Or they could catch it and eat it.
Cir wasn't hungry per se but she wasn't one to turn down food either. Whether Rakvald followed or not the Mer began to follow the sketchy shadow. She needed to be sure it was nothing but the flashes of color told her it was something. A edible beast, a friendly one or something that would wish to rend the flesh from her bones did not matter. Whatever it was needed to stop stalking them as if they were strange prey because the Mer was no one's prey. With all the grace and caution of an elephant on drugs Cir wandered towards the strange shadow, tentacles smacking any foliage away with all the care of an angry storm. Whatever it was she would find it or it would be smart and flee before she could.
Re: Pervading Darkness - Day 2
As the others had dispersed to investigate their various points of interest or whatever Silaqui, without releasing her horse reins, found herself a rock and plunked herself down. She was mostly thankful no one had grabbed her and dragged her to look at something somewhere. She hadn't the energy between the previous days excitement the loss of sleep to truly want to do any of that. So she was more than happy to just plop herself down and sleep for a little bit wherever she found a place to sleep.
Resting her chin on her right fist ans she gripped the horse reins her eyes flickered briefly before sleep wrapped her up in its warm embrace. The warmth of the sun, the noise of the Lori, Tark and Da'lee talking quietly all of it simply fell away as she sat there. Part of her wondered if this was how peaceful death felt. If this was what it was like to die in your sleep. She would be fine if her life ended there in that very moment. She was simply at peace.
She hadn't died though. Exhaustion and stress had taken its toll. She had simply passed out as soon as she had made herself comfortable on her rock. Her dream was a hazy swirl of color. Filled with a distant hum of whatever it was that made that humming sound when you lingered between alert and sleep. Then slowly as if to taunt her the hum turned to the sound of waves. That smell of sea air came back. Everything came back.
She was on the deck of the ship. She was at the rail. Her bow was in hand. She drew. She fired. She reloaded. She drew. She fired. She reloaded. She drew. Then bang. She was flying backwards across the deck. Her vision shooting with stars of pain as she left the deck and slammed into it again. Then nothing. Blackness. Inky and thick. As if she had died.
She gasped deeply as she woke with a start. Checking herself she found herself to be s much there as she had been just moments before. Two legs, two eyes though was less than useful, and one and a half arms. She was as complete as she had been when she sat down. Wincing slightly she cradled her wounded limb. Every time her heart rate spiked her arm hurt. Carefully she rubbed it. Carefully she tried to sooth its pain. Sooth herself. Ease her own pain.
A distraction known as Rakvalds return gave her everything she needed to shift her focus off her pain. He'd come back with a very small tree. He'd said what kind but she'd not heard it. She'd heard Cir called the tree salad, a name she sort of wished to stick for the little tree, and say that she'd seen something and wanted the Lotharo to check out with her. Silaqui was perhaps a little happy about it. Cir had ignored her and asked Rakvald to help her. Leaving her to remain where she sat on her rock to enjoy the warm sun just a little bit longer.
Just a little bit... longer.
