Cylus 2, Arc 722
The evening before, Devin had celebrated at the beach with the people of the Smooglenuff Barony. It had already been a bit after midnight when he had gone to bed which was why he felt a little weird and bleary-eyed when he finally woke up, sometime around the eighth’ break, judging by his estimates (He could hear the maids chat in the hallway; they always cleaned the hallway outside his private quarters around that time.).
For a moment, he considered getting up, but then he grabbed one of his pillows and put it over his head in order to block out the sounds around him instead. That was one of the things that he liked about being a Baron. Nobody could tell him when he had to go to bed or get up in the morning anymore because he was the man in charge. If he wanted to, he could just spend the whole trial in bed which was exactly what he planned on doing.
Except that …
… except that he had almost forgotten that he was supposed to be at the manor clinic this morning!
There was a small clinic at Smooglenuff Manor where he treated the people of the Barony as well as students from Saoire’s School and the odd tourist, and he was supposed to be there at nine. He briefly wondered if he should claim to be sick, but then he quickly jumped up.
A good doctor didn’t neglect his patients, and he wanted to be a good doctor. He did in fact want to be the best doctor that Scalvoris had ever seen and the best at everything in general!
(Besides, he loved doctoring, at least most of the time!)
He pretty much raced over to his vanity table because no matter in how much of a hurry he was, he wouldn’t go anywhere where people could see him if there were dark circles under his eyes, and there were definitely dark circles under his eyes, as a look into the mirror confirmed.
“Bleh”, he made and stuck his tongue out at his reflection because he didn’t like it very much at the moment (Although he was still more handsome than most other men in Scalvoris in his opinion!) before he poured a bit of cold water into a bowl, washed his face and put a generous amount of concealer under his eyes and a bit more makeup on the other parts of his face in order to make himself look as if he had spent the entire night in bed.
Having done that, he ran his brush through his hair and put on fresh clothes. Since he didn't have enough time to look through his sizeable wardrobe anymore, he decided to simply put on his Duplicity Suit and made it look like a very fashionable and pretty violet suit. Finally, he left his room, just as his friend Aidan who was pretty much a veterinarian walked down the hallway, with a spring in his step.
He looked at the slightly older man for a moment before he smiled at him because he had just had a thought. “Aidan! It’s good to see you! I need to be at the manor clinic in less than a break, so I was wondering if you could walk Heidi instead of me!” he asked him. “I’ll cook for you tonight”, he added in order to increase the likelihood of the other man saying ‘yes’ because he really didn’t have time to take care of his pet goat right now - Aidan loved it when he cooked for him specifically.
Fortunately, Aidan nodded, and Devin thanked him profusely before something suddenly occurred to him. He looked at his friend and looked at him again before he asked, “How come you look so cheerful?"
“I left the party earlier rather than staying until the very end and paying the guards a visit on top of it”, Aidan replied in an extremely dry tone of voice before he made his way into Devin’s room where Heidi was still lying in her goat bed that looked exactly the same as a dog bed.
Devin went into the kitchen in the meantime in order to wish the staff a good morning and ask for a cup of strong coffee that would help him wake up for good as well as some bread with butter and jam because he was already starting to get hungry.
He reached the manor clinic just in time, feeling almost like his usual self once more.
Two patients, two young men, were already sitting on the bench in the hallway. One of them looked fine, from what he could tell, but the other one had a broad bandage wrapped around his leg and looked rather miserable. When Devin asked him what he could help him with, he didn’t reply immediately, but just looked at him and made, “Ouch!”
