Stronghold of education and learning, this fortress is in one of the coldest areas of Idalos and home to many knowledge seekers in a variety of disciplines. However, unknown to most, below the city are those who suffer for the sake of science. While all are welcome, not everyone will be treated as they expect.

Look to the Future

Image
Ymiden 7, Arc 721

Cold and dark Cylus had made way to Ashan and finally to Ymiden. After a long, harsh winter, the snow had begun to melt. When the Mortalborn who had just woken up opened one of his bedroom windows in order to let in a bit of fresh air just like he did every morning, he could hear a constant, low sound, the sound of ice thawing and water dripping.

The air smelled different now, he noticed as he took a deep breath and then another one. It did not smell of snow anymore, and of winter, but of summer. There was warmth now, and light. Logically, Doran knew that light could not really have a smell, because it was not substantial, but there was no other way to describe that smell and that change in the air around him.

A part of him needed to be surrounded by the ice and the snow that were part of his father's Domain of Winter and only felt at peace then, but at the same time, he appreciated the current season, because it carried a hint of optimism, and a promise of hope. He remembered that he had frantically researched something, anything, that might be able to help Scalvoris during the War against Slag's Deep. the cycle before. Although eight entire trials were still missing from his memory in that regard, he was not as bothered by it as he used to be.

He found himself looking to the future rather than wondering about the past.

Dean Trandino had chosen him as his successor. He would preside the Institute of Sciences from now on, and Yvithia, his Immortal aunt, had arranged a feast to celebrate that transfer in power. He was grateful for that, and he was looking forward to it, greatly so. They had celebrated him when he had arrived in Etzos as well - there had been a feast that all those that had mattered, including Lord Vuda and Marshall Pahrn had attended.

Even before he had realized the entire gravity of his mistake – the people of Etzos had celebrated him because he had tried to kill the Immortal of Hope which had become his biggest regret - he had not liked that kind of fame. The upcoming feast was a joyful occasion on the other hand. He was looking forward to talking to his colleagues, and perhaps his Yvithia herself, and he already had plans for the time afterwards. What he had said during the debate had not just been empty words - he wished to intensify the relationship between the Academy and other universities. Everybody would be able to benefit from that.

He envisioned an exchange of knowledge, and perhaps, a new period of learning.

He planned on returning to the university in Scalvoris himself, in order to talk to the professors there and perhaps hold another series of guest lectures.

For now, there were preparations to be made and a breakfast to eat though. A smile flickered across his face for a brief moment as he noticed another smell besides the one of light and melting ice - the smell of the coffee that his mortal cook Elias had apparently made for him.
Notes
From the Viden calendar:

1st: The weather begins too warm up causing water to thaw

5th: Yvithia has sent word that in four trials time there will be a grand feast to celebrate the transfer of power at the academy. She wanted to make sure that everyone knew of what a grand thing had happened.

“How are you this morning, sir?” Elias, a dark-haired human male and a native Etzori asked as Doran sat down at the kitchen table – he preferred to eat breakfast in the company of his servant, rather than alone, in the dining room or the salon, even if such might constitute a breach of etiquette in the eyes of some of the aristocrats that were his neighbours.

He enjoyed the mortal’s calm demeanor; and besides, Elias had been with him for arcs. He had known him when he had still been the so-called Hero of Oscillus, and he was aware of what had happened during the Mummer’s Ball in Rharne. He had never questioned anything, but been loyal and professional which was something that should not be taken for granted.

“I’m fine Elias”, the Mortalborn replied, smiling very lightly and inclining his head, before he took the porcelain cup that his servant had placed in front of him, blew at it and finally took a few slow, careful sips, enjoying the taste. He thought that he could detect a hint of caramel and vanilla. “This is delicious”, he remarked – because it was true.

“Thank you very much, professor”, Elias replied and proceeded to serve the rest of the meal. “I decided to experiment a bit and add both caramel and vanilla this time, and I thought about adding a hint of chocolate on top of it next time”, he admitted before he set a plate with a few slices of sweet bread that contained raisins down in front of Doran.

“I got up a little earlier to-trial. I felt like baking something”, he admitted and shrugged his shoulders very lightly, as if it was nothing. Elias had been a soldier once upon a time; an injury had forced him to retire though. He had been bitter about it at first, but he had come to enjoy his new life. He had discovered a passion for cooking and often went to the market in order to try and find new and interesting ingredients that he could experiment with.

In Doran he had found an employer that was quite happy to give the dishes he came up with a try.

“Sit down and eat with me”, Doran remarked as he smeared a bit of butter and jam onto a slice of bread. “You did all the work. You should enjoy this as well”, he pointed out. To his relief, Elias did not protest. Once upon a time, he might have been uncomfortable because he had considered socializing with his employer and eating the same food that he did to be inappropriate. He had found that Doran did not care about such things though, at least not in a private context. So, why shouldn’t he be more relaxed?

Doran had just finished eating the first slice of bread and was about to ask Elias what his plans for the trial were – not just for the sake of being polite, but because he was genuinely curious about it – when a knock on the door could be heard. A moment later, there was another knock. He made to rise from his chair, but Elias shook his head and told him, “I’ll take a look, sir.”

He was getting paid to do such things, after all.

Re: Look to the Future

While Elias went to see who was at the door, Doran slowly drank his coffee, his thoughts beginning to wander slightly. He had planned on looking to the future rather than thinking about the past, but as he sat there, he couldn’t help but wonder again, nevertheless; why the Immortals were the way they were, why mortals were the way they were, and what the reason for everything was. Why did people hate and deceive? Why did they kill? Why was there suffering in the world? Why did people so rarely stop and think?

Were such things an inevitable part of mortal – and Immortal, perhaps even Original nature – or had someone or something created all those beings with the need to wage wars and cause others harm in mind? And if the latter was the case, why had they done so? He had been similar once – he had thought that violence was an acceptable answer sometimes – it wasn’t though. It should only ever be used as a last resort. There was always an alternative, a third option even though most people seemed to think that you could only choose between two things.

Doing something or not doing something. Fighting or giving up. Good or evil. Life or death.

Glancing at Elias’ bread and wondering if he should take another slice, he thought about if there was a way to change things, if there was a way to change the way the world worked at its core, make it stop – and free them. He had come to realize that his Immortal kin might be prisoners just as much as the mortals that walked the world of Idalos; they were inevitably tied to their domains and couldn’t escape which seemed unbearable to him.

Once upon a time, he had wondered if attaining divinity himself might be the answer to all those questions. Apart from everything else, he had come to realize that his father’s people were neither omnipotent nor omniscient though. Maybe, the answer could be found in the depths of Emea though – or in the distant past. Maybe, he just needed to see the point of origin, the moment that it had all begun. His father could see the future, maybe, he could learn to look into the past, deeper into the past than his current abilities allowed him to.

Wondering, if continuing his research and doubling his efforts might be the way to go if the answer could be that simple, he finished his coffee, just as his servant returned, carrying a large box in his arms. A smile spread across his face as he realized what it was.

He thanked the mortal and asked him to please set the box down on the table before he rose to his feet in order to open it. It contained two suits, made of soft and luxurious Shaggyoats wool from Scalvoris, dyed back. The first suit was decorated with fine golden and silver embroidery, just like the suit that he had worn in his dreams once, while the second suit was comparatively simple, without any adornments. He had ordered the first suit because it seemed inappropriate to attend such an important celebration wearing old and used clothes.

The second suit would be for work.

As he thought about the celebration and the start of his new job, all those thoughts about the fate of Idalos as well as Immortal and mortal nature gradually started to fade into the background once more. There would be a way – he was and would always be hopeful – and no matter what happened, there were a lot of things to look forward to regardless.

Notes: A nice relaxing thread about having a nice and relaxing coffee. Somehow I missed that Elias was from Etzos. I seem to remember someone associated with Doran being from there, but it was usually a tenuous reference or maybe I just wasn't paying attention.

Either way, it's nice that baking is now tied up in cooking, and Elias can make some pastries/candies/chocolatries. The actual philosophizing was of course a nice side feature to the thread, with Doran wondering how he can make the world better, using educational motivation.

I look forward to Doran's investigations into the questions he raised here.

Good luck and well written!
