Stronghold of education and learning, this fortress is in one of the coldest areas of Idalos and home to many knowledge seekers in a variety of disciplines. However, unknown to most, below the city are those who suffer for the sake of science. While all are welcome, not everyone will be treated as they expect.

A Scholar of Blades

Image
Zi’da 42, Arc 720

The son of Ziell had not thought that he would ever hear from Darius Baer again, let alone meet him again, as they lived in different parts of the world. As a consequence, the letter that had arrived on his desk one morning, towards the end of Vhalar, had come as a great surprise. He had been happy about it though. He had often wondered how Darius was doing. When he had taught the human to use a sword, during a brief stay on the island of Scalvoris, he had been quite impressed by his attitude. Darius had been observant and respectful, and he had been willing to learn from his mistakes rather than complaining. He had seen potential in him and thought that he would go far.

He had been honored that Darius wanted another lesson from him, and that he was even willing to travel all the way to Viden for it. As a consequence, he had immediately replied that he would teach him. At the same time, he had been worried though. Darius wanted to take part in an expedition to the Stormwastes where an earthquake had taken place. Everything that he had heard so far pointed towards some sort of supernatural involvement rather than a natural disaster. He would not dissuade him from his plans though; instead, he had decided to make sure that he would have the skills that he needed to face whatever challenges came his way and teach him what he could.

He had originally considered inviting him into his private training room in his apartment in the Obsidian Prism, but ultimately booked a room at the Fitness Centre for the two of them instead as there would be more room to move and more equipment.

~~~
Doran had already arrived at the aforementioned room a little before the time that he had told Darius. Instead of one of his customary elegant suits, the Mortalborn wore a simple black outfit that was comfortable and would not restrict his movements while still offering a certain amount of protection. He had arranged for a couple of practice weapons to be brought into the room; he had also taken his own longsword made of Grave Gold with him from the Obsidian Prism though, just in case. It was lying on one of the benches at the back of the training room now, encased in a sheath of white and gold.
The Mortalborn himself was in the centre of the training room, looking utterly calm and relaxed. For a few moments, he simply stood there, not moving, and with his eyes closed, inhaling and exhaling deeply, before he performed a couple of stretches in order to warm up and finally executed a series of swift side kicks and open palm strikes. He always began his training sessions that way, no matter whether he was the teacher or the student. Those moves, central elements of Menochoros, did not only help him become more flexible; there was an almost meditative quality about them in his opinion.
They helped him get into the correct state of mind and focus.
He was still going through his exercises when Darius arrived at the Fitness Centre. Upon seeing the human, he stopped immediately though and turned to look at him, a light smile on his face. “Mister Baer”, he greeted him in a deep and polite tone of voice, inclined his head and walked over to the younger man in order to offer him his hand to shake. “It is good to see you again. It seems as if you have led quite an interesting life since we parted ways in Ashan”, he remarked and fell silent for a few moments in order to give Darius the opportunity to talk about his adventures and his plans for the future.
The Mortalborn did not simply wish to make a bit of small talk before they began to train together. He hardly ever made small talk, or talked just for the sake of talking. He was genuinely interested in hearing more (if the other man did not wish to talk, then he would not pry though).
“I thought about how to best set up this lesson quite frequently since your letter arrived on my desk last season and tried to take the nature of the mission that you wish to undertake into consideration. Before we talk about it and begin, I would like to ask you if there is anything in particular that you want to learn though”, he finished in a calm tone of voice and met the younger and slightly shorter man’s gaze.
That was something that should always be taken into consideration in his opinion: the student’s wishes.
Arc 720, 42nd of Zi'da
Darius had arrived in Viden a few trials earlier. After a chance encounter with a local, he had been given a tour of the city, and he had done some of his own exploring each morning that followed.
He quite liked the city. He enjoyed the silence of snow and ice, and thebway he was greeted each dawn with a silent serenity of a frozen Synnefa Bay.
But most of all, he liked that Viden wasn't Scalvoris, and nor was it Rharne.
Both cities carried memories that he was in no rush to dwell upon. Scalvoris was where he had met her; where they had shared many adventures. And Rharne was where she had introduced him to her family.
YEVA.
He could barely say the name any more. Not in the way he once had, at least, and not without feeling a stabbing pain in his chest.
It used to bring with it a curious ability to lighten his mood and bring a smile to his face. But now it was enough to send him to Viden just so that he might have a chance to ignore it.
That was the true reason for his visit to the frozen city in the north. Not that he wanted Doran to think that, of course, and he was in need of more training, so it had made sense to seize the opportunity to leave Scalvoris.
When he stepped into the Fitness Centre, however, brushing loose snow from his clothing, he was fully present. Despite the emotional pain that had driven him to Viden, his focus was on improving his skills with his longsword. It would be of no use for him to not give his training the dedication it needed, lest he join Yeva much sooner than he hoped.
His tutor was in the centre of the room, and Darius waited patiently until the man approached. Doran's grin was so genuinely polite that the mariner found it impossible to resist returning the favour.
"Grandmaster Thetys," he greeted the man, taking the offered hand. "Thank you for taking the time to train me."
In their previous brief encounter, Doran had proven himself to be a patient teacher, and now he had proven himself to be generous with both time and resources. Darius hoped that one trial, he might be able to repay the man for his kindness.
"Aye, it has been a tumultuous time of late," he said solemnly. "The eruption of Faldrass has caused much devastation."
That was, of course, only a small part of what Darius had gone through, but he had no intention of discussing his loss.
"Between that and the siege at Storm's Edge, I've had my hands full."
He managed a wry smile at that, but nothing more.
As Doran spoke about the lesson, Darius nodded. He appreciated how much his teacher was willing to consider what he wanted to learn, without simply going through the motions.
"Well, you're the expert," the blond human stated the obvious, "so I'll trust your judgment, but I've never been involved in a large scale battle, and I imagine I'll have to think on my feet. I wonder if it wouldn't hurt to learn how to wield a second blade, should the need arise."
"You're welcome, Mister Baer", the Mortalborn replied as Darius thanked him for taking the time to train him. He took a few moments to look the younger man over, taking note of the way that he held himself as well as the expression on his face, before he gestured for him to follow him to the weapons stand near the door where the swords that he had asked for were being kept.
As he did that, he remarked, " Please call me Doran or Professor though. The title of Grandmaster was never given to me, but I earned the right to call myself a professor."
When Darius mentioned the devastation that the eruption of Faldrass had caused, the son of Ziell stopped for a moment and looked at him before he inclined his head sharply. He had to admit that he was curious about his experiences. The tone of the younger man's voice, so solemn, made it obvious that he did not wish to talk about the matter further though, and for that reason he decided to leave it be.
"I know about the siege at Storm's Edge and the Flameborn", he replied. "Mrs. Augustin sent me a letter and asked me for my advice", he explained in case Darius was wondering how he, a resident of Viden, had come to be familiar with the events in a city as far away as Rharne.
"Do you expect to encounter such creatures during the expedition?" he asked and raised an eyebrow fractionally before he pulled a longsword out of the stand and handed it to Darius.
"Steel", he explained. "I'm afraid that the Fitness Centre doesn't have anything better, but it is well-made and well-balanced. If you can afford it at all, I would suggest that you acquire a sword made of Adamantite or Grave Gold for the mission. Adamantite can slice through even the hardest of materials while Grave Gold is extremely durable and absorbs blood", he continued before he took his own sword.
"I personally use Grave Gold", he remarked. If Darius took a look at the Mortalborn's sword he would be able to see that there was not a single red stain on it. It was pure white. Doran did not delight in violence.
"While your skill with the blade matters the most, the quality and the material of your weapon play a part as well. In a fight against an equally skilled opponent, such things might even be the deciding factor", he spoke, in case Darius was wondering why he had made that particular suggestion.
"I can also procure a weapon for you", he offered in a calm and neutral tone of voice, but he did not say more, realizing that some people might have a problem when it came to accepting a gift, especially from a relative stranger. A few onyx nels more or less hardly mattered to him though. He was one of the richest men in Viden and he had more money that he would be able to spend in a lifetime. This was a cause that he wished to support.
"Settle into your stance and move your sword. I want to see how much you remember from our previous lesson before I teach you something new", he told Darius before he pondered the mortal's next statements for a couple of moments only in order to finally shake his head very lightly. "If you mean dual wielding, I would advise you against trying that. Wielding two blades at the same time takes great skill, and your swords can get in each other's way if you aren't careful. A shield would offer you better protection while two-handed swords such as the one that I use allow you to strike with greater force."
"I wouldn't be able to teach you how to dual wield",
he added and shrugged his shoulders very lightly. He was not embarrassed about the fact that he knew little about such matters. He had never had an interest in certain combat styles. His longsword had served him very well over the course of the centuries.
As Darius followed Doran over to where the swords were kept, he nodded at his instructor's request to be referred to by something other than 'grandmaster'. The tutor suggested using his title of 'professor' as one alternative, but the Scalvorian decided to opt for the much less formal - a complete contrast to the honorific he originally used.
"'Doran' it is, then," he grinned.
He knew he was being a bit cheeky, but it seemed strange to think of sparring with a 'professor'.
Darius' grin disappeared when the conversation turned to the siege at Storm's Edge. The bearded blond did not much like the idea of entering mortal combat, and every time one of his distractions evaporated and his mind was taken back to the potential of facing battle, it brought with it a pang of anxiety that sat in the bottom of his stomach.
"I don't know what to expect, if I'm honest," he replied to Doran's question. "Frankly, I hope I don't have to face anything, but I don't have the luxury of deciding such things."
Doran spoke of weaponry, and the importance of choosing not only the right weapon, but one made of the most suitable materials.
"That's very kind of you to offer," he responded to the man's generosity, "but you are already doing me a favour by training me. I'm sure I can acquire my own blade, but I appreciate the advice all the same."
Darius followed Doran's instructions and, having taken one of the steel longswords on offer, he adopted a fighting stance not dissimilar to the one he had used when they had first met, but this one was more relaxed. His legs were slightly bent at the knee, and his weight was distributed evenly. It was not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a vast improvement - in Darius' eyes, at least.
He nodded at Doran's dismissal of the idea of dual wielding, and came out of his stance to acknowledge that his tutor would not be able to teach him that style of combat.
"Aye, that's fair enough," he admitted with a light chuckle. "Best I sort out how to use one blade before I grab hold of another!"
Re: A Scholar of Blades
Image
“You hardly ever do“, Doran replied of voice when Darius told him that he didn’t have the luxury of deciding such things –most of the time, those that you fought did. When the mortal declined his offer of procuring a sword for him, he inclined his head fractionally. He could have afforded to buy a blade made of Grave Gold or Adamantite easily, but he would not force the younger man to accept a gift.
Instead, he turned to watch him settle into his stance, furrowing his brow slightly before he inclined his head. He still remembered their first lesson at The Proving Ground in Scalvoris. Darius had been entirely too tense back then. This time, he appeared to be comparatively relaxed though. He had made progress, but then he had not expected anything else. Darius Baer did not give him the impression of being someone who was slacking.
Even during their first lesson, his attitude had impressed him.
“You’ve improved noticeably”, he remarked and smiled slightly before he continued in a matter-of-fact tone of voice, “The proper footwork is essential. That’s another reason why I asked you to show me your stance before we begin properly, besides wanting to see how much you remember from our previous meeting. Being tense can lead to choppy movements and cause you to react more slowly. If you don’t know how to hold yourself correctly, your attacks will be less effective”, he continued.
“If I remember correctly, I already taught you a few important basics back in Scalvoris, that every defense of yours should simultaneously be an attack, for example, that you should use different attacks in order not to become predictable and that you should always lead with the sword in order to give your opponent less time to react”, he spoke – he considered it to be a good idea to summarize the contents of their previous lesson before he moved on to the first new subject of the trial.
“These principles apply to humanoid as well as certain non-humanoid opponents. Judging by the information that Mrs. Augustin shared with me, the Flameborn are quite intelligent, for example”, he remarked, furrowing his brow thoughtfully as he couldn’t help but wonder how exactly those creatures had come into existence, before he shifted his stance slightly and subsequently moved his sword in a quick, controlled and precise strike – if Darius looked closely, he would be able to see that he used the edge of his blade - and settled into a guarded position.
“There are, essentially, three basic attacks. What I just showed you was the strike. When you attack someone, it is important that you never swing your sword wildly but strike precisely. Every attack of yours is an opportunity for your opponent to attack you in turn. Furthermore, you should strike with the edge of the blade. Beginners will often twist their sword in mid-swing and subsequently hit at an angle at which their blade will not cut as easily. And finally, make sure that your cut comes from your body and not just from your shoulders”, he told him.
There were other things as well; Darius needed to be able to hold his own in a fight first and foremost though. His technique didn’t need to be absolutely perfect. It just needed to be effective. From what the Mortalborn had surmised so far, the younger man was unlikely to ever fight in a tournament or in a more academic environment where such things mattered. He just needed to survive – and come out on top if everything went well. Besides, the Mortalborn considered it to be better not to potentially overwhelm him with certain small details.
“The slice is more or less a cut that is executed with less than full power and often used when there is not enough room for a full cut. The thrust, the third attack, is executed by extending your sword in a straight line towards your target. I will show you each of the three attacks now, and then I want you to try and imitate me. At the end of our lesson, we will spar, just like last time. Don’t be discouraged if you struggle a little at first or are a bit slow. Regular practice is, as it often is, the key”, he finished before he demonstrated the three attacks to Darius.
His movements were fluid, and he transitioned from one attack to the next absolutely seamlessly – such things had become second nature to him a long time ago. His attacks were meticulous, just like the cut that he had shown Darius a couple of bits earlier, and he appeared to be relaxed and utterly focused. His first couple of attacks were comparatively slow – he wanted Darius to be able to follow him and see how exactly he was moving his body as well as his sword – before he repeated them at full speed, because that was important as well.
Finally, he made a step back, lowered his sword again and nodded at Darius.
It was his turn now.
Re: A Scholar of Blades
Darius nodded grimly when Doran acknowledged that it wouldn't always be his choice as to when he might need to know how to handle a blade. It was not his intention to take a life, if such a thing could be avoided, but he also knew that there were certain circumstances in which he would be prepared to do so. Yeva's passing had solidified that belief within him, and if he had been there with her, he would have done all he could to save her - even if that meant taking her place.
The Scalvorian shook his head in an effort to clear his mind. The Rharnian was gone; nothing could be done about that, and trying to roleplay scenarios in his mind would not bring her back.
Darius watched as Doran demonstrated three attacks. The movements were fluid and natural, as if the longsword was simply an extension of the man's body. The tutor made the movements appear effortless, but Darius knew, from feeling the weight of the weapon in his hands, that they were anything but.
Recognising the meaning of Doran's nod, Darius returned to the same stance that he had held before. With the hilt of the longsword in both hands, he attempted to mimic the man's strike, but he immediately felt himself twist the blade mid-flight, so that the flat of the blade would have struck his opponent, had he had one. He caught himself and drew the blade back for another strike, this time making a mental note to avoid repeating the same mistake. This time, he was able to keep from twisting, and the sharp edge of the blade led the attack.
Then he attempted the slice, which felt less clumsy, and finally the thrust, which felt the most natural of all - though he suspected it was the one he would use the least of in an actual fight.
"Like that?" he asked, but before waiting for an answer, he attempted each attack again, at slightly faster pace, trying to maintain his form.
Re: A Scholar of Blades
His sword lowered now, the son of Ziell watched as Darius attempted to imitate the attacks that he had just shown to him. The look on his face was calm as well as encouraging. He did not say anything when the younger man immediately twisted his blade in mid-attack when attempted the strike, which was one of the things that he had warned him about.
A lot of things were easier in theory, after all.
Instead, he nodded when he tried again. That was one of the things had already impressed him about Darius Baer when he had first taught him, he realized – the human didn’t argue, he didn’t question him, he didn’t get discouraged; he just tried to correct his mistakes, and he gave his best. His second attempt was noticeably better than his first one.
“Exactly like that”, he replied when Darius repeated the attacks again – that was another thing that he appreciated about his student. The mortal didn’t just repeat each attack once, subsequently stand still and wait for further instructions; he just tried again. “Your thrust was near-perfect”, he remarked which was not a compliment, but the statement of a fact.
“I’d like to move on to the different ways of defending yourself now”, he spoke after Darius had finished, raised his sword once more and proceeded to settle into his stance.
“The most natural attack for the average person is a cut that is executed diagonally across the body, generally towards their opponent’s torso”, he explained in a calm tone of voice and shifted the sword in his hands slightly before he executed such an attack, quickly and precisely. “The first thing that you should do in such a case is to move out of the way. Step off to the side and forward, and then strike diagonally, just like your opponent in order to meet their sword before you execute a counter-attack. Like that”, he spoke and demonstrated what he had just explained to Darius.
“If your opponent attacks your head on the other hand”, he continued and raised his sword a little higher. “Step off to the side and forward, raising your sword in the process and defend yourself like this”, he spoke and performed a swift circular cut. “Place your thumb against the bottom of the flat of your blade to control your defense. It is important to raise your arms high enough to cover your head and keep your hands high enough to prevent your opponent from striking your fingers”, he added.
He had previously decided not to overwhelm Darius with details; that was something important though.
“When it comes to defending the legs”, he finally said to his student. “Things are a little different. One cannot attack the head without exposing the legs in the process, at least not easily. The best way to react to such an attack is thus to move backwards so that your legs are out of your opponent’s reach and immediately execute a cut towards their head. Blade contact is completely unnecessary in that case. In the end, your opponent is the target, and not their weapon”, he pointed out. That was something that needed to be said in his opinion. Far too many, especially inexperienced, fighters tried to hit their opponent’s weapon when the true target was the person who was wielding it.
“I’d like you to repeat the moves that I’ve shown you again now”, he told Darius. “If you need me to demonstrate something again, let me know. Once you’ve tried out all three defenses, you can practice what you have learned in a spar against me, provided that you are interested in that”, he added with a slight smile before he lowered his sword and stepped back once more in order to watch the younger man.
Re: A Scholar of Blades
There was an extra sense of pressure that fell upon Darius when his instructor was watching him. It didn't make the Scalvorian any more or less skilled, but it naturally made him more cautious, not wanting to make a mistake.
It had always been this way. Even as a young lad, attempting to show his mariner father that he knew how to tie a bowline - the most basic of sailing knots - he had fumbled with the rope and grown frustrated.
"Fret not, lad," the elder Baer had said at the time. "Just relax and try again."
So when his blade twisted in error as he attempted to mimic the strikes that Doran had demonstrated, he found himself once again following his father's advice.
And now, as the swordsman taught him defensive strokes, he took the same approach. He focused on Doran's movements and listened to his instructions, and then attempted to do as he had been shown.
Again, he moved much more slowly than his instructor had. He was, after all, learning these movements for the first time. He could only imagine how many times Doran had practiced them.
There were a few learning moments, such as when Darius mistimed the diagonal block across his torso and was unable to execute an imagined counterattack, or when he became confused and stepped forwards instead of backwards while attempting to protect his legs.
In time, however, and with additional feedback from Doran, the Scalvorian was able to practice the movements, slowly becoming faster and more proficient, while also growing in confidence. It was then that he accepted the invitation to a sparring session, and it served to drive home two important learnings for him: that he was much better with a blade in hand after receiving Doran's instruction; and that he had a long, long way to go.
Multiple times, his instructor carved his way through Darius' attempted defenses, and he blocked any counterattacks with ease. But not once did the student feel embarrassed. He simply chose to use the experience as a source of motivation to improve his skills with a blade in hand, and he told Doran as much when their sparring ended and they shook hands.
Darius was grateful for the lesson, not just for the opportunity to improve his skills, but also for the distraction from his grief.
Notes: A fairly straight forward training/sparring session. I was a bit surprised that they decided to train with live steel, given the fact that they're sparring, but I suppose Doran has a handle on that situation with his skill being what it is. Still, even a beginner swordman can catch a master off guard with their unpredictability.
Darius' reflection on Yeva's fate was touching. The young man has been through a lot in such a short time, that one can scarcely blame him for the mood he's in as he sets off to train with Doran. Hopefully he finds something to distract him from the pain of loss in the interrim.
Doran had some good pointers on swordsmanship, pertaining to edge-alignment and things that are easy for people who aren't familiar with bladed combat to overlook. His preference for materials was an interesting topic, Grave Gold is a nice material.
Nicely written overall.
