• Solo • Sandspecks

Stronghold of education and learning, this fortress is in one of the coldest areas of Idalos and home to many knowledge seekers in a variety of disciplines. However, unknown to most, below the city are those who suffer for the sake of science. While all are welcome, not everyone will be treated as they expect.

Sandspecks

Saun 5, Arc 720

It continued to get warmer. The cycle before, the Mortalborn had held a series of guest lectures on the island of Scalvoris. He had arrived there during a heatwave. It had been bad enough that people had fainted, especially if they had not drunk enough water or engaged in physically demanding activities; it had been over after but a handful of trials though. The heatwave that Viden currently suffered from, on the other hand, didn’t seem to end. It was in fact getting worse.

It had started with the ice melting and the water level in the rivers and the bay rising. There had been freezing rain instead of proper snow, and then the bugs had appeared – which had been an especially concerning event in his opinion. Now, it was warm enough that he had ordered his servants to stop heating his apartment as much. For the first time since he had arrived in the northern city more than two arcs prior, he did not wear a thick coat when he was outside anymore; it had been replaced by a relatively light jacket.

He was on his way to the Academy this trial, as he was almost every trial. This time, he would not be teaching a class though; he would be taking part in one. The cycle before, he had decided to begin a Diploma in Chemistry (his ultimate goal was a Charter or even a second Licentiate). He was an exceptionally skilled chemist (which was not an exaggeration, but the truth). He needed certificates that were recognized by academic institutions in order to advance his career though.

He did not mind that he essentially had to go back to being a student again. On the contrary, he appreciated the additional opportunity to further his knowledge and familiarize himself with new developments in his preferred fields of science (in his opinion, you should never stop learning) – and to get to know some of his future colleagues. Besides, at the Diploma level, they had moved past the basics. Some of the things that the various teachers talked about were quite interesting – and they constituted a change from his usual research that took place at the conjunction of medicine and alchemy.

The class that he would take part in that trial was a little different from the ones that he usually attended; it would involve a bit of practical chemistry and a few small experiments rather than a theoretical discussion of chemicals and chemical processes, and thus the teacher, Orik Qy’Azour, a man of mixed Biqaj and human descent and a relatively new employee of the Institute of Sciences (he had only started to teach the cycle before), had asked them to come to one of the laboratories rather than gathering in the lecture hall where the classes usually took place.

The Mortalborn found himself quite looking forward to it. During their last class a few trials earlier, Orik had mentioned that they would work with Sandspecks, a material that Doran had encountered in Ashan when he had taught a series of guest lectures in alchemy at the University of Scalvoris. He had not thought of taking a few samples with him when he had returned to Viden (which was something that he had come to regret), and he appreciated the opportunity to familiarize himself with them now as a consequence.

Re: Sandspecks

When he entered the laboratory, approximately half of the workstations were already occupied. Most of the people that studied chemistry at his level were somewhere between twenty and thirty-five arcs which meant that he didn’t look out of place as far as his apparent age was concerned. The way that he dressed as well as his being a professor attracted attention though. Some of his classmates had been a little intimidated at first – it was not every trial that a relatively senior member of the Academy showed up in one of your classes and studied alongside you – until he had managed to convince them that he was not here to teach them and would not judge them.

Whatever they did here would not affect their grade in one of his classes, in case they decided to eventually enroll in the Academy’s alchemy program (which was something that chemistry students did on a relatively regular basis; the two sciences complimented each other well).

His background might be a bit different, but in the end, he was here to get a degree, same as everyone else.

He nodded at a few people before he found an empty workstation next to Taelis, an Eidisi male that he occasionally practiced Menochoros with. The Eidisi smiled at him briefly before he focused his gaze at the front of the room as Orik had just arrived, carrying a large wicker basket in his right hand. He set it down on his desk and proceeded to remove several glass jars that were filled with a number of tiny balls in a slightly metallic blue color from it – followed by a second set of jars that was filled with bright green sand.

(Doran recognized the sand; the season before, he had let his alchemy students experiment with it a bit. The green sand was always cool to the touch. It could be used to make the temperature inside a room more bearable during the summer seasons, among other things).

Once Orik was done, he looked up and smiled briefly before he began to speak, “Good morning. As I told you, I visited Scalvoris early this Ashan in order to gather a few reagents. Sandspecks are not only pretty to look at. When you combine them with certain chemicals, they can be ground to produce silver sand. The latter has an interesting property which is one of the reasons why I decided on that particular substance.”

“Its melting point is comparatively low. If you do everything correctly, it will turn into a viscous liquid when you touch it”,
he revealed.

“I’d like you to partner up with someone now, come to my desk and get a few Sandspecks as well as some green sand. Silver sand is relatively sought after, so if you ever visit Scalvoris at the right time in Ashan and manage to collect a larger number of Sandspecks, you could make some money!” Orik added which caused Doran to smirk slightly.

It was a good strategy in his opinion though, a way to make sure that people would make an effort and pay attention. The young man, he observed, seemed to be much less nervous than he had been when he had started teaching; and his teaching methods more or less resembled his own. Orik’s classes, he decided, were going to be quite enjoyable.

“Professor?” Taelis asked once Orik had told them to go ahead and looked at him questioningly. “Shall we work together? I have to admit, I look forward to seeing you practice chemistry. I’ve only seen you fight so far”, he admitted. He spoke in a relatively calm tone of voice. Being an Eidisi, he was a fairly disciplined individual and did not show a lot of emotion.

(Which didn’t mean that he didn’t have any, of course.)

The Mortalborn nodded.

At the beginning of the cycle he had thought about which title, if any, he should use in class – and if he should allow his classmates to call him professor, considering that he was not the one who was teaching this class. In the end, he had decided not to dissuade anybody from it.

While he was not the professor, he was still a professor, and he saw no reason to pretend otherwise.

“I’ll get the reagents if you prepare the tools that we’ll need”, he offered. Once Taelis agreed to it, he approached Orik who smiled at him in a friendly way before he handed two jars to him. A few moments later, he was back at their workstation where Taelis had already arranged a mortar and pestle and a scale, among other things, and gotten a jar of salt from the cabinet at the back of the laboratory where the reagents were being stored.

Together, they carefully measured the reagents, double-checking everything in order to make sure that they had gotten just the right amount, and then Doran put the Sandspecks, the green sand and the salt into the mortar and started to grind them into a fine powder of sorts.

He was utterly focused as he worked and barely cast a glance at Taelis who stood next to him and watched him, arms crossed over his chest and an expression of curiosity on his face.

Someone else might have struggled to crush and grind the Sandspecks slightly – it took a certain amount of strength, after all – to Doran, doing such was quite easy though. Not missing a single Sandspreck was a bit of a challenge though, and thus the process was time-consuming, regardless.

He couldn’t tell when or how exactly things started to change, but after approximately ten bits of constant grinding the mixture of Sandspecks, sand and salt in the mortar looked different. Blue, white and green turned to silver, a colour so beautiful that he could not help but admire it for a few moments even though he had seen a lot of things over the course of the centuries.

“Taelis?” he remarked and gestured for the Eidisi to come closer, his tone of voice a hint softer. “Shall we see if it works?” His companion met his gaze for a moment before he nodded and extended a hand, palm facing upwards, so that Doran could pour a bit of sand onto it. The sand began to melt almost instantly. The Mortalborn watched it for a while, head slightly bent, before he scooped up a bit of sand of his own, touching the thick, silvery liquid with a gloved finger, very carefully, a light smile on his face before he pulled at it, trying to pull it apart.

Once upon a time, the Mortalborn would mainly have been concerned with whether something was useful. He still couldn’t help but wonder if there was any use for the silver sand, but he was quite happy to just look at it and admire it for the time being because it was such a wondrous, little thing, an example of the beauty that could be found in science. His spark that sought to experience new things, new sensations, and new textures, he noticed, delighted in it as well.

Comments: It was interesting seeing Doran in the student position, where I'm used to seeing him teach others alchemy. He seems to have humbled himself a bit, which is by turns required by the pursuit of education, I suppose. At any rate, the experiments done here seem very interesting, I figured scalvoris sand had alchemical properties, but wasn't sure what would be found by examining its chemical makeup.

Good writing and enjoy the rewards.
