Tio, Nir'wei, Alyssia and Kisaik team up to hunt down the Scalvbeast.

9th of Zi'da 719

The shallow bay Egilrun is situated upon is used, these trials, for crafts and crafting. From boatmakers to weaponsmiths, glassblowers to metalworkers, the sound of hammers and saws can be heard almost every break of the trial, with crews working in shifts to produce the beautiful craftsmanship which they might, one trial, become famous for.

We're All Going on a Dragon Hunt (1)

The Lemon Messy, Egilrun
9th Zi'da, 719

"It were a beast I tell ye: big as an ox an' with claws like broadswords! It swooped down from the night sky, snatched up three o' me best sheep, and vanished without a trace!"

Hushed chatter broke out all across the Lemon Messy as almost the entirety of the residents of Egilrun began to whisper amongst themselves. While the story hadn't been a particularly well told one it was definitely the hot topic of the village at the moment, and as such anyone who was able had come down to the mess hall tonight to catch up on the latest gossip. The legendary Scalvbeast had been causing trouble all across Scalvoris for a long time now, but in recent trials had become particularly focused on attacking caravans taking goods along the road between Egilrun and Scalvoris Town; targeting carts of livestock and the occasional slaves to feed upon. For a village like Egilrun, which relied almost entirely on trade for income, the disruption to their biggest supply line was a major crisis.

"Why aren't the Elements doing anything about this? Or the Rangers? Shouldn't someone have taken care of this by now? Why is nothing being done?" An elderly woman exclaimed spitefully.

"Because it's not their problem."

The hushed chatter died a sudden death as all eyes turned to the one who had spoken: Liza, The Merchant Queen. Her words carried weight without the need to be shouted, and everyone settled into a respectful silence as she made her way to the centre of the room where all could see her. "One beast harrying the occasional merchants is a small enough problem to ignore when there're so many other problems they have to keep on top of. Don't forget that the Elements lost about half of their manpower not so long ago, and they still have all that disruption caused by the hot weather to sort out. We can't rely on the government to take care of this for us. This has become an Egilrun problem, and we'll be the ones to sort it out."

She sowly began to circle the centre of the room, looking out across the crowd and making eye contact with anyone she good. She pulled a pouch of coins out of her pocket and dropped it on a nearby table. "What say you? Who among you is brave enough to step forth and take care of this problem? I'll even supplement the bounty on its head with money from my own pocket: half now, and half when the job is done. Come on, someone!"

"I'll take you up on that!"

Whispered chatter kicked up again as Tio pushed his way through the crowd, his cloak of black Scalvwing feathers trailing behind him. He was a known face around Scalvoris by now: the winner of the Darbyton Derby and an adventurer who'd helped solve a lot of Scalvoris' problems before, though with a reputation for being somewhat insane. He took the pouch of coins and turned to address the crowd.

"But I'd feel a lot more confident with someone to watch my back. I'm willing to split the reward and the bounty equally among everyone. I have a plan: one that I'm confident should rid you of your pest problem, and one that I hope won't require anyone to fight the beast directly. What do you say? Anyone feeling brave?"

This wasn't the first time he'd heard the chatter, and he pinched his lips silently as the whispers went on and on, each one exaggerating the beast's proportions more than the last. Nobody could even accurately say what species it was. Someone from the crowds glanced in his direction and he quickly turned away again, hoping that the dark and simple outfit would blend easily into the audience; he already knew that his face would garner no odd looks, thanks to the Charm of Anonymity tucked into his hair, granting a new face every five bits. A perfect trinket for gathering information in public without arousing too much attention. "They're not saying anything new," Cold said after a pause.

"Maybe the next stop will hold something better," Myrth suggested from his other side, but Nir discretely held up a hand and leaned forwards with interest as someone new from the crowd spoke out. It also wasn't the first time he'd heard offerings to those that could clear the problem, but it was the first time he'd heard a serious offer. The only thing that really rubbed him the wrong way was the wording. 'Take care of it'. Well, he definitely wasn't going to kill it, if that was what she was honestly suggesting.

Absolutely not. The reason he wanted that thing was to capture and train it, after all. Why else?

If that meant he'd have to get to it before anyone else, he would. If it meant he'd have to take care of the others who might try to earn themselves a little reward money, then he'd frighten them off, or worse, if necessary. Vabina growled slightly in his head, but he dismissed it quickly - it was underhanded, yes, but it was also necessary... and besides, there were other ways to deal with it as well, he was just jumping to the most likely ones. The Scalvbeast, whatever it was, was absolutely worth the price, money or otherwise. Traveller garnered attention and respect, and he was utterly confident when he said that no beast could match his speed or dexterity, but something told him that even at half their capacity, if this was something the Elements could have dealt with at that moment, they already would have. Holding that, here, and using its strength to start pushing for more control over the workings of the Council sounded delicious, for what he had in mind.

Of course, that was when Tio stood up. Tio. The Immortal. He wasn't even trying to hide his face - and were those Scalvwing feathers in his cloak? Well, he supposed he shouldn't have been surprised, and yet he still found himself shaking his head in utter disbelief. Of course he would. "I'll take you up on that." He might have been wearing a different face for the time being, and intentionally picked a section of wall to lean against with minimal lighting, but he was sure it wouldn't matter anyway, since he was quite confident Tio could recognise him from the eight spirits currently assorted around him. "It'll be just like old times, huh?"

The Harpy Eagle's cry rang across the skies, as Kisaik rode astride Knugget. They flew down with speed and strength, landing on the very grounds of the Lemon Messy. Once there, Kisaik lifted his hand to his knightly visor, looking at each person who'd gathered in turn.

"I heard you had a legendary beast problem?" Normally it'd be Alaiwa's business to announce Kisaik's many accomplishments and qualifications, but as it was his squire and herald was busy. He'd have to rattle them off on his own, "Well, allow me to introduce myself. Mädärä Kisaik Ciuruọrun sọ Kufuata Karo, tamer of Harpy Eagles, Orange Knight of the Fairy Court, Warden of the First Tree of Yaralon. With no small amount of help from others, I've brought order to the Fairy Court of Jesine, and with the aid of my fellow Wardens, I calmed the savage Mud Induk of Yaralon, and birthed the First Tree from it's earth, bringing pure water and fruits to Yaralon."

"I would be honored to help you in this task. But I caution you, violence against such a creature is an abhorrent first instinct. We must first see if it might be reasoned with. A legendary beast that has lived such a long time must have intelligence of a sort..."

He looked around at the room, and those who'd declared to help the first arrival. "I believe I'm the best choice to greet this 'Dragon' or Scalvbeast, whatever it may be. I only ask that you let me attempt to reason with it, before you all draw your weapons."

The Tunawa Knight rode Knugget as it flew across the room, to take up position with the rest of the group who'd gathered.

Re: We're All Going on a Dragon Hunt (1)

Alyssia walked around the edge of the crowd. She was trying to learn as much as she could about the creature known as the Scalvbeast. The teen had not expected such a monster to be in a place that seemed so controlled. A creature with the claws of broad swords and wings that are strong enough to pick up sheep without even flinching. The young Aukari was not sure what could be done against such a creature. But a part of her wanted to see it in person, even if she could not help fight against it. Watching the crowd, the child was amazed to see so few actually discussing a way to make it leave.

Scrunching up her nose, the girl moved away from the group that stood right beside her. Perhaps listening to others would help her. After transitioning around, there was ever stranger descriptions of the creature. Confusion graced her face, was there no clear description of the monster. A part of her tried to recall if she had heard of anything that could change its shape or appearance in the wild. But nothing was coming to her mind at the moment. Her attention was drawn to a woman that stood before the gathered crowd.

The call to arms was a shock, the girl forced her way to the front of the crowd that had turned to face her. The sack of coins got her attention, it could be possible for the child to try and find where it was located. Her heart pounded in her chest at the thought of being the first to raise her hand to go against the creature. Looking around, the girl watched as a man with no face spoke up and walked to the front of the group. The second to step forward seemed to know the first one. Tilting her head, the girl was beginning to wonder if they would even want her. Alyssia had no weapons of her own, or any kind of true fighting style. The young Aukari made a shift to go forward at first taking a deep breath. A gasp left her mouth when a little wooden man came out of no where and gave his name before saying he would join the group as well. Soon all of them are together and waiting for any one else to join their group. When no one else stepped forward, Alyssia did with confidence in her eyes.

“I will!” Alyssia called out.

“Ha! You are too young to fight girl! Go back to your parents,” a male voice called from the crowd.

Glaring, Alyssia could feel her body heating up as she turned quickly, “At least I have the guts to help! You wont even step forward to protect the place you call home!”

The child then turned on her heels and faced the three men with her red hair all over the place, but the fire to prove herself burning in her eyes. It was clear that her age did not stop her from being brave even if it could cause her death.

Re: We're All Going on a Dragon Hunt (1)

The first person to speak up was a man leaning against the wall in the corner of the hall with baggy clothes and an unassuming face, but with a familiar tint to his voice that Tio found oddly familiar. It wasn't until he recognised the small horde of wolves, the squirrel and the whatever-Lyshe-was that he figured out who he was speaking to: Nir'wei the mortalborn! The last time they'd met Nir'wei had himself been a wolf, but now that he thought about it Karem had mentioned that she was going to help him return to sev'ryn form. He'd assumed she was going to make Nir look like his old hippie self, but apparently not.

"Well now, if it isn't my favourite wolf-man!" He replied with a bright grin, assuming from where he was standing that Nir was probably trying to stay incognito and woudn't appreciate having his name shouted out. He hadn't pegged Nir'wei for the type to hunt down monsters, bu perhaps he recognised it was necessary for the people of Egilrun to thrive. "I'd be more than happy to have you and your companions along! Well... as long as they don't all want a share of the reward as well..."

The next to call out was another familiar face, but this one he'd seen far more recently. It was the little tunawa from that incident in the bookstore a few days ago! He didn't think he'd caught their name back then, but he could remember them acting very chivalrously. The tunawa introduced himself, and while the long and complicated foreign name went straight over Tio's head he did recall hearing talk about a new source of clean water popping up around Yaralon when he was travelling through there.

"Hello again Madea Kis... Mudara... Ma-... Hello again tunawa person!" Tio called. "If there is a way to settle with without violence I'm happy to give it a try, but the wellfare of these people comes first. This problem has to be resolved one way or another." From what he'd heard the Scalvbeast was just another mindless monster, but locals did tell stories that the Scalvbeast used to protect Scalvoris. Maybe there was a peaceful way? Regardless, there was no harm in preparing for both eventualities

The final person to speak up was someone that Tio had never met before, and honestly was a little surprised had stepped forward at all. It was a girl in her early teens, possibly an aukari if the bright red hair was any indication, without much in the way of muscle on her. In all honesty Tio's first thought was to turn the girl down; after all she didn't seem like she could look after herself, and there was a very real chance that the Scalvbeast would kill her if they made a mistake. He didn't want the death of a kid on his conscience. But when she shouted back against the person who heckled her and turned back to then with eyes burning with determination he was forced to revise his opinion. If looks could kill the Scalvbeast would be dead already. Taking her would be a risk, but she certainly seemed to have the courage for a monster hunting quest and in his experience that was half the battle. Why not give her a chance? If it turned out she couldn't keep up he could always just send her back home alone, but if she could then this experience might help her become someone ferocious in the future.

"... Very well, you're in." He said slowly, making it clear with his assessing look and tone of voice that he had some doubts. Better to let her know from the start that she needed to prove herself to stay in rather than deal with any misconceptions later. "You've got guts kiddo, I'll give you that. Let's see what you can do."

Nobody else stepped forward after her, and so Tio addressed the crowd once again. "Then with that we have a party! I promise you that in a few trials your problems will be over! I know exactly how to do this!"

The Lemon Messy was filled with noise as the residents of Egilrun all cheered and toasted to their success. Drinks flowed like water, praise was given, and for a few minutes the village celebrated as if their problems were over already.

"I have no idea how to do this."

A little while later the newly formed team was sat at a table in the far corner of the hall while the rest of the villagers returned to normal conversation or headed home for the night. Tio had called them away from the crowd for a strategy meeting, looked around to make sure nobody was listening in, and then casually dropped that bombshell with a smile on his face and an ill-deserved level of cheer.

"Don't get me wrong, I wasn't lying when I said I had a plan." He continued quickly as he saw the others begin to react to his statement. "It's just that it's more like... half a plan. Two thirds at most. But in all fairness you can't really plan very much when you have no idea what you're up against; honestly I think I've done well to get this far."

With a quill and piece of paper he'd borrowed from the bar he sketched out a rough drawing of... something. It seemed to be some kind of dragon, but a child drawing in crayon could have done a better job. Art was not one of his strengths. "From the intelligence I've gathered the Scalvbeast is some kind of big dragon-like creature with wings and sharp claws, but that's all that's known for certain. It has a preference for attacking early at night and leaving few survivors, so eyewitness accounts are pretty vague. Now I don't fancy my chances at trying to either negotiate with or fight a dragon head on, so my plan so far is just to find out what it looks like. Once we know that I'll figure out the rest of the plan."

He quickly drew two very bad representations of Almund and Egilrun with a squiggly line between them, then marked points in the middle of the line with X's. "What I do know is that there's a routine to its attacks. While it has been seen causing trouble all across Scalvoris, the raids that take place on the road always take place at night and out of sight of both Almund and Egilrun. It also only targets cattle and slave carts, and has been seen to eat what it attacks. My theory is that the Scalvbeast has learnt that this area is a good place for a midnight snack; it's fairly busy even at night and poorly defended. So here's what I thinking." He opened the pouch of money Liza had given in advance and spread some coins out among the four of them. "Tonight we get some good rest, and tomorrow morning you guys go around the village and see if you can buy some cattle we can use as bait: old sheep, the odd sick cow, dogs, that sort of thing. I'll look to hire a cart, and then we meet up at the village centre in the afternoon with whatever gear we need. Then we load the cattle onto the cart and set out on the road to Almund, which should take us into its hunting grounds just as the sun is setting: about the time the Scalvbeast should make an appearance."

"With a bit of luck it should see us and attack, and which point we abandon the cart and run for cover. If we put some hanging lanterns on the cart it should both help attract the Scalvbeast to us and allow us to get a good look at it whilst it eats the bait. Hopefully by observing it we'll be able to come up with a plan for how to deal with it. When it's finished feeding I'll use this." Tio reached into his domain bag pulled out a smooth round stone, almost like a pearl but with an unusual pink hue to it. "This was a gift from Edasha," Tio said with the infatuated sigh, the faraway look in his eyes betraying how fond a memory it was. Edasha had a habit of leaving the men she met looking like that. "It's called the Verity Stone, and with it I should be able to see through the Scalvbeast's eyes. Once it returns to its nest I'll see where it is, and then we can plan to set a trap there. So what do you think? Any questions?"

Re: We're All Going on a Dragon Hunt (1)

It quickly became clear that he wasn't the only interested party. The first, a Tunawa, riding a bird and speaking with a surprisingly bold and eager voice. A seasoned adventurer, he could tell, well before he started listing off his accomplishments one after another. Some he couldn't even guess - Fairy Court? Others, however, stoked an interest. Wardens. Savage Mud Induk? Words he knew mixed with concepts he didn't - since when were Induk like Lovalus considered savage beasts to be brought to heel? Since when were there other Wardens, for that matter? Or was that just something that they called themselves, instead of an ordained rank. At least he seemed of a similar mind - but then again, did he intend to bring the thing to heel in the same manner?

Lost in thought, he offered a cursory nod towards Tio in acknowledgement, but said nothing else, and all but ignored the small girl also throwing her hat into the ring. Since he really had little intention of taking the reward money, he didn't care how many times they'd split it - as long as they didn't end up costing him the prize he was after, or getting themselves maimed or worse along the way. A few villagers clapped him heartily on the shoulders in celebration, but most of them seemed happy to chatter excitedly in their own little huddles, and he offered no reply to those trying to strike up conversation, so they soon decided to find better things to do. After five bits, his face was another, and anyone else trying to chatter with the heroes of the trill soon muttered apologies and went on their way, thinking they'd confused him with someone else.

The only person still able to identify him, Tio pulled him back into the group later, his face swapped several more times and now settling on something completely different from when they'd started. Of course he didn't have an actual plan... but that was a good thing, really. It left room for experimentation. "You mean you can't do anything yet with your..." he gestured vaguely towards Tio but refused to elaborate - since it seemed the two of them had come to a mutual understanding not to reveal anything to the others and keep certain... aspects to a minimal exposure. With that in mind, however, he had to keep things brief. His voice might be the same, but he had exactly five bits before his face ended up changing again, and the less questioned on it, the better. Worst came to worse, he was just another associate in a similar outfit. "I can pick up some cattle. No dogs." He shot a very meaningful look at Tio for that bit. "You use your stone, the, uhh... Tangerine Squire rides his bird and I'll get someone to fly after it and get a better look, too. Important to see how it flies. How high, how fast. Get a better idea of how to take it down."

He glanced briefly at Alyssia. Familiar? From the alley, someone whispered, and he suddenly blinked. Her?! "You stay with this one," he said with a point at Tio, "and don't ask him about his shirts, if you know what's good for you." He laughed, but he swore he was getting close to the deadline. "Everything else sounds good. We make a better plan when we know what this thing is... but, little knight is right. Most important thing, can't kill it. Would be very bad for us all." Well, just for him really, but he was willing to pass a little white lie if it meant they avoided bloodshed.

Kisaik waited for his introduction to hang on the air, but didn't expect anyone to know of his deeds. So he wasn't caught by surprise here. He nodded to each of the companions in turn, and sat quietly, listening to Tio and Nir'wei talk about plans and plots to bring the great Scalvwing to heel. Kisaik didn't know if it would listen to reason, but he had to try!

He listened until they came to Nir'wei, who began talking about his own plot of action, for perhaps taming the beast. Then referred to Kisaik... as the tangerine squire. Tangerine. Squire. He inhaled sharply through his nostrils, and calmed himself. Perhaps the man was ill-mannered, or brought up outside the orbit of polite society. In either case, the tunawa decided not to hold it against him.

"You may call me Chip, if you like. Most tall folk prefer reciting shorter names." He smiled at Nir'wei, saluting him crisply.

"By the way, I have a certain... er magic that lets me be understood by beasts of all kinds. While I can make myself understood, they cannot understand me in turn. Would this be useful, you think?"

The tunawa glanced skeptically at the little girl who'd joined them. He wasn't keen on bringing a child along, and didn't want responsibility if something should happen to her. "My girl, are you sure you want to go on such a dangerous mission? It could be very dangerous."

Re: We're All Going on a Dragon Hunt (1)

Alyssia walked through the crowd trying to keep people from touching her. She had never been good with people touching her too much even with her own parents. There had been a hint of a doubt in the man’s eyes that had stepped forward to begin with. It seemed that her outburst against the weakling that called at her from the crowd. The teen raised her head when he agreed for her to come with them. She was glad to see that someone saw her potential rather than just her age. It took a moment before her mind finally recognized the second man to step forward.

He was the one who’s wolves had cornered her in the alleyway that day. She had actually accused him of being another kidnapper in her paranoia. Clearing her voice some, the teen looked over to the other man that seemed familiar to her as well. But, at the moment there was no current memory of in person meeting for her to draw upon. Alyssia could feel her nerves starting to flare just the tiniest bit at the thought of fighting the beast. That was at least the way it sounded to her. Glaring some at the man when he pointed to her then told her to stay close to Tio.

“I am not weak……. Completely,” Alyssia tried to argue before remembering she did not even own a weapon, “um mister Tio sir. May I buy a small bow and arrows if it is not expensive?”

She did not like asking for permission, but the last thing that she needed to do was make their leader mad at her. There was still a lot to do with his plan. The teen very carefully took the amount of money that had been divided up to her use. If she could not get a bow, then the child would have to think of some other way to be useful. When the small one spoke next another glare threatened to show on her face. But the girl managed to keep her face from showing the utter annoyance that she felt.

“Would an unmanned cart and animals not look strange?” Alyssia asked trying to have some kind of input, “also I know there is danger in this mission sir.”

Alyssia did not try to pronounce his name nor did she think that the name given to the other was for her to use as well.

Tio sighed forlornly when Nir'wei made a veiled reference to his newfound Immortal powers. He appreciated Nir's secrecy on the matter, doubly so since the sev'ryn had picked up on the need for it without having to be told. So far Nir was the only mortal who knew about his ascension, and if everything went as planned nobody else would ever know until Tio had grown into his strength. Right now he was weak, and he didn't need people knowing that there was a vulnerable little Immortal wandering around the world just waiting to be experimented on. "Sadly not. I'm about as useful as a rubber axe right now. Besides my dashing good looks, razor-sharp mind and the ability to conjure a fish I'm basically a regular human."

A slight frown marred his face when both Nir and Kisaik spoke up against killing the beast. Yeesh, the two of them were really gung-ho about this. While he was certainly willing to try for a peaceful situation it was always best to prepare for the worst, and the trail of bodies the Scalvbeast had left made him suspect the worst was a pretty likely scenario. The life of this one creature couldn't be weighed equally against the lives of the victims it had claimed so far and the ones that it would continue to kill. One way or the other definitive action had to be taken. "Okay okay I get it, like I said we'll try the diplomatic way first." He huffed, a little irritated at having to repeat himself. "Once we know what it looks like, where it lives and what we can bring to the bargaining table then we can try talking to it. But if we go in ill-prepared we'll only blow it. Wait until we know what we're up against before we decide on the next step."

When Alyssia asked if she could get a small bow and arrow to bring to the fight he shot her a teasing smirk. "Wow kiddo, are you that good of a warrior? Only a small bow and arrows is enough to slay a dragon in your hands, is that right?" He removed a few coins from the pouch, then chucked the rest of the advance pay to Alyssia. "Get something bigger kiddo. A battleaxe, a horse, heck even a catapult if you can carry it. Small arms wont do much good again big creature. Of course you might have trouble carrying the damn thing, so perhaps your best bet is to think smart." He gestured out towards the buildings surrounding them. "Egilrun is home to some of the best craftsmen on Scalvoris. I bet with a little bit of money and creativity you could come up with something more useful. Remember, it doesn't necessarily need to harm the beast, just inconvenience it."

At her comment about the cart looking strange Tio hummed thoughtfully. "Perhaps, but we've not reason to suspect that this beast is sufficiently intelligent or inclined to know about human customs. Besides it will likely spot us before we spot it, and will notice when we and run away, so it will probably just assume we ran in fear when we saw it coming. Shouldn't be too unusual a reaction."

The rest of the money he split between himself a Nir'wei, assuming that Kisaik might have a bit of trouble carrying the coins due to his size. "We'll meet back here at sunset tomorrow, with all the equipment we need and the bait needed for the cart." He shot them all a sharp-toothed grin. "Alright team, move out! Operation Rynmere Knight is go!" So named, of course, because just like the valiant knights of Rynmere so too would they run away at the first sign of danger. With that Tio turned and headed back into the Lemon Messy, clearly intending to wrangle a few more free drinks before turning in for the night.

Re: We're All Going on a Dragon Hunt (1)

Knowing that Tio didn't quite have a grasp on everything at his disposal was a little disheartening, he wouldn't lie - a lot of his hope that this wouldn't escalate to killing the beast had been resting on his shoulders. A last resort, if it was really worth calling it that. "Regardless, I hope you won't think me turning too sentimental when I say, it might even be a pleasure having you with us. Even if you are completely useless." He still didn't have entirely high hopes for the other two, so perhaps they'd all end up surprising each-other. Or he just had stupidly high expectations. Oh well. They had a plan, and it was a solid one; as long as they stuck to it and kept the surprises to a minimum, they'd all make it back again and perhaps they'd even manage a celebratory drink at the end of it all.

Nir'wei stood up to leave, nodding in agreement to all of Tio's notes and pocketing his share of the coin after counting the pieces on the way, but he stopped only once to turn and point a finger Alyssia's way. "Poison." A tricky subject to approach, but better to just throw it out there than let the taboo hang over them all. "Get something small, but strong... and a couple of vials of poison with it. Thinking how big this thing is, really it shouldn't be enough to do more than slow it down, perhaps stun it," he said with a meaningful look in the little knight's direction especially, "but if you want to be useful... that's how." Really useful, actually. Depending on which poison, preferably poisons, she managed to find.

"Alright. I'll grab the cart and cattle. The village center, tomorrow, sundown. Bring everything you've got. And perhaps a spare pair of breeches."
