Appearance

Ion’s hands are large and rough, the lines in his palms telling a million stories. When he’s not working, his fingers are covered in the beads and gems and wires of handmade jewelry. Under his jewelry, he dresses simply. Ionyus typically wears a loose-fitting, white canvas shirt beneath a vest of faded color, allowing some of his freckled chest to appear beneath. He wears dark-coloured, knee-length knickers over long white stockings or black boots. He doesn’t have the money or want for more than a few outfits.
The man avoids eye contact, often looking over shoulders or into the distance when he talks to people. His walk contains the slight bounce of a limp from the ghost of an injury, and an indented scar can still be traced on the back of his calf from the incident. When standing still, he tends to rock or sway, always itching to do something.

Personality

Ionyus is quietly confident in his own ability and sees little need to depend on others. His independence is both a strength and a deadly downfall; he refuses to rely on the help of others or allow others even a sense of what problems he is facing. He very much views himself as someone who gives help but does not receive. He is hardheaded and stubborn with strict morals, but he won’t turn away someone in dire need of help no matter what morals he sees them compromising. He claims happiness alone, but, deep down, he wants to make a family.
Ionyus is friendly, despite his quietness. He holds personal freedom above all else, and he views most relationships as a handicap upon his freedom. He holds pride in all he does and works hard in every task given to him, except those that go against his morals. He is known to be a bit of a giggler, filling holes in every conversation with a soft laugh. He prefers the company of one best friend over many good friends, but he tries his best not to make too many enemies. He is jealous easily and believes that loyalty champions all else in a relationship. He himself is very loyal, but, slow to both forgive and forget, can feel betrayed easily.
Ionyus can easily put on an air of optimism and happiness even he temporarily believes, but deep down, there's an unsettled dissatisfaction with the current state of life. Ionyus has, nearly his own life, saw the longing in his family’s eyes as they wished to return to sea, and he has known himself as a burden. He is unhappy that he is afraid, and he feels a need to find some identity within him, some proof that he is a true Biqaj, despite his fear.
Most of all, Ionyus wants to prove to both himself and his family that he can be happy and successful and satisfied on his own. He wants to find his own stories to tell, his own happiness to craft. He, however much he wants to achieve these goals, is afraid of the change and failure they could come with.

History
Ionyus Varuna was born to a pair of Biqaj fishers on a fishing vessel, the fifth of six children and the eldest of a set of twins. His family was happy and comfortable aboard their boat, and every one of the eight had a role. Early tragedy struck, however, leaving Ionyus fearful of water.
Zephyrus and Ionyus were, as twins often are, naturally close. They were mischievous, too, but never got into trouble without the other's witness and help. As toddlers, their jobs on the family ship were simple- cleaning, easy knots on ship level, and slow learning of larger, more important skills. Plenty of time was left to play and explore, perhaps too much. The two were daringly climbing the rigging on a breezy day at sea as the cool waters whipped around the ship. A slip of the hand and a turn of the tide left Ionyus on the ship as he stared at his reflection- his twin- beneath the waves. Death could be expected at sea, but, to lose someone whose very blood and cells had been shared with you- it was as if Ionyus had, even as a toddler, lost half of himself. He grew, half of what he once was. His love of the sea was drowned with the death of his brother.
Ionyus' parents, aware of the fragility in their now youngest son, made adjustments as they found the fear unable to be quelled. The family moved to a small, sea-salted house on the shores of Rharne, continuing their fishing pursuits while always returning back to their small home. One by one, his older siblings returned to the waters he had forced them to leave, eventually leaving Ionyus with his parents at the age of ten arcs. Even at a young age, Ionyus could see the want to return to the water in the shimmering eyes of his parents, and he convinced himself that he a burden, perhaps more than he was a son. He quieted and distanced himself to be as little a burden as possible, even attempting to return to the sea with his parents and siblings as they visited the stationary home. Yet, he found his bond with family stressed, if even only in his mind. His childhood felt like a stay as a needy guest whose hosts tried their bests to accommodate but always failed. He did what he could to help his family from the shore, but, with a want to become independent, he pursued his own skillset. On the shores of Rharne, a 16-arc-old Ionyus found Fergus Aldrich, an aging, human shipwright who, realizing his life was wrapping up, wanted to pass on his skills. Ionyus worked closely with the man in the Aldrich warehouse, a large wooden building whose back opened onto the water itself where ships could be built on the water. Fergus Aldrich became nearly a father to Ionyus, and Ionyus was promised to inherit the warehouse rather than Fergus’ own children who had left the nest long ago.
When he was offered to inherit the ship-house and knew that he could support himself, Ionyus claimed independence from his family at 19 arcs and moved out of the small family home to a small house closer to the warehouse. His parents returned to sea, but their anchor was set in the beaches of Rharne. The two return often.
For years, Ionyus and Fergus worked side by side efficiently, but Ionyus could tell that the man’s health was dwindling. It seemed, too, that Fergus’ long-gone son could tell, too. The human man, Woodrow, claimed to be returning to check on Fergus’ health, but Ionyus, not blinded like Fergus by the excitement of his son returning, suspects that the human has returned to win Fergus' favor in inheritance.
Today, Ionyus remains on the shores of Rharne, a shipbuilder neutral in the conflicts of the world.
