Products of Fire and the Blood

They had, the trial before, made some things which, hopefully, would mean that they could track Ellasin. The thing was, she had to test them. So, Faith made her way out into the garden. Her bodyguard, Alissa, was with her and there were Lightning Knights all over the place. Faith was starting to feel like a prisoner in their home, but she knew that this was just ingratitude and fear talking. The pair of them were trying to keep things as normal and usual as they could, for the sake of the children, but it was hard. Then, yestertrial, they'd made these items; or more specifically, Padraig had and she'd helped; and that had led to all sorts of bother, so they hadn't tested them yet. But now, it was time for testing. So, Faith had brought the two items out, each in an individual small pouch and wrapped up carefully. The first one which she examined was ~ hopefully ~ going to lead them to Ellasin's phylactory.

It had been a steep price which Padraig had paid, and Faith hoped that this was worth it. So, she pulled out the stone. It was ~ or rather it had been ~ a Fire Well. Now it was more of a gem, burning a deep red and almost-warm to the touch. Faith looked at it and held it in her hand, examining it. First, she held it with her eyes closed, to feel it and how it changed. Moving around in a circle on the spot where she stood, Faith felt it warm, slightly, she thought. That was good - maybe he'd managed to make a heat-seeking sort of thing, she thought and then, she opened her eyes.

"Oh," Faith said and she smiled. It was a line - an actual visible line. Faith breathed out and her outbreath was slightly shaking, ragged sounding. "Thank you," she whispered to all the Immortals who had helped, because she knew that this? This would make an enormous difference to them. As she held on to it, though, she felt something and, frowning, Faith lowered her gaze to examine her hand. "That's... odd."

It was, indeed, a strange sensation, but one which she was aware of. Frowning slightly in concentration, Faith cast her memory back and she realised what she was feeling. "I'm losing blood." The former Fire Well, now tracking device, glowed and she looked at it. "Well, that's interesting. You're a tricksy little thing." Then, she knew that it was time to experiment more. Her own blood was in here, and as such it might only work for her.

Quickly, it was obvious that it did not work for Alissa, but Faith wasn't put off by this. There were lots of people in the house, around the house, and so she needed to find out. She was thorough and meticulous and she realised that it was only her and Kura who saw the line. However, for those marked by Famula, Famula's son, or those marked by Karem, there was that hot and cold thing. But did that take them to the same place? Faith tested that next and, having made her way once more around her many house guests, she came to the conclusion that no, it did not. For Famula or Karem touched (be that by mark or birth, as far as she could see) - the point of this hot / cold thing was to lead to things Ellasin had made. The thralls which were created by her, the soulstones, those things.

But the line went somewhere else. It took blood. Where it went, though, Faith didn't know. She just hoped.

It was tricky, Faith thought - and she really didn't want to push things, but equally, the more they knew about these things the better. So, she decided that the thing to do at this point was to do a little experimentation. It seemed to be draining her blood, as it went and as a Zuuda, she had a unique control over her blood. So, she experimented a little. If she put some of her blood on it, she wondered what might happen then. So, she tried it. Then, of course, she was able to heat her blood, control the ectoplasm in it. And so, she gave a few extra drops of blood, just to see. Also, she looked at PB, the diri of Death, and Shule, the diri companion bonded to her as a Warden of the Lake. "Either of you two able to see anything additional, here?" After all, it was important that they tried everything, they looked at everything they possibly could.

The smallest detail here could be very important, she knew, and so she experimented as much as she could. Feeding it blood ~ which was as reasonable, she supposed, as using her blood to make it yet felt more icky somehow ~ and changing aspects of her blood as much as she could. Faith knew that there were Elements here, people Sephira had brought who would be able to attune to it, also, but this was something that she'd rather do herself, without the use of magic if she could help it. But then, also, Faith considered, this had been a fire well. Did it still respond to heat?

All of these things, she had a look at and did so as efficiently, and as thoroughly as she could. She didn't yet want to involve others, not until she'd worked it out as much for herself as she could. It wasn't that it was a matter of pride (although it was, to an extent - but pride was something Faith could overcome easily), but it was a matter of protecting her family. She didn't know who she could trust here, not entirely. So, she glanced at Cassie, the little ghostly child who was always with her. "How about you? Are you seeing anything unusual?"

She took as much time as she needed to, but after two breaks, she stopped. The last thing she tried was to control her blood flow while holding it. She didn't need to bleed, thanks to the spirit in her blood. So, she tried that.

And that, she knew, was more than enough.

She had tested the thing, and then tested it some more. She had a much more clear idea, now, of just what the limits were and that was good. It wasn't good in that nothing made a difference and she was exhausted, but that was a short term tired, with long term answers. They had a line, a clear direction. In that moment, just before she moved on to anything else, Faith pulled out the Key from Qylios which allowed her to get a sense of where Faldrun was. Was he in the same place as Ellasin? Was that what was going on here? Faith didn't know, but she knew that she had to try to find out everything she could.

And so, she did. From that, she came to a number of conclusions. Hot blood, heat, none of them made a difference. She could keep going longer, but she couldn't stop her blood from draining. Only she and Kura could see the line to Ellasin, and that just made the both of them much more important, as far as she was concerned. There were a lot of tests, and she did them all. Fundamentally, with the phylactory-tracker, Faith came to the conclusion that it did what it did and, no matter what, it did it. "Stubborn thing, you are, aren't you?" It made sense, she supposed. Stonehearted, emotionless, it made sense. Necromancy didn't change, it just ... was. Cold, dead, unnatural. It just was.

In this moment, she hated it.

But, that was all she could do. She needed to give herself time to recover, but what she had learned was vital, she genuinely believed it. So, after a quick cup of tea, something sweet to eat and some time cuddling her babies, Faith got back to it. Now that she was clear on what the phylactory-tracker did, she needed to check out the one which led them, hopefully, to Ellasin's body. Before she started, she gave Alissa the phylactory-hunting tracker, so that the two things weren't interfering one with the other, then she turned her attention to the Ellasin-body tracking one, taking hold of it and she beamed in pleasure at the sight of Ellasin's ghostly figure walking towards ... well. Faith had to assume it was where she was. "I think it's working!" she said to Alissa and then dropped it in the pouch she had for it. As she put her hand on the place where the phylactory-tracker should be, Faith's smile turned into a frown. "It's gone. Where's it gone?" Alissa held up the item in question and raised an eyebrow.

"How did you get it?" Faith asked and, after a conversation between them, Faith sighed. "Well, that's inconvenient."

Every now and then I get a chance to glimpse into this event, and am pretty floored by the little intricacies that go into each and every post in this endgame plot.

It's great to see Faith still learning new things and branching out into areas of knowledge that she hadn't considered using. Blood magic would seem to be quite useful, especially to one devoted to an Immortal whose domain is Blood. Let's hope it doesn't backfire. :D

Points
