Those who had desire to do so took samples of the water and then, finally, they left the first room behind.

In the second room Amaris examined the rockfall, she too noticed what Niv had seen. It was like the rocks themselves were sucking the light around them and, as she stood there she felt... melancholy wash over her. However, she did get a glimpse, and that was of a cavern, stretching back and out of there. There was definitely some space behind that rockfall. But just the proximity to them made her feel more and more hopeless.

Padraig meanwhile, examined the pillars, taking a sample of one. He looked at the size and shape, they were all different but as he noted them down he saw that they all had different numbers of sides ~ and they were in an increasing number from a rough, but definitely six-sided pillar up to the one with eighteen sides. That was the twelve of them. Perhaps flush with that discover, he did something apparently harmless. He tapped one of them.

Then, three of them moved forward into the next cavern, through the tunnel of darkness. This marked an important moment for them, because it meant that they split up. Niv, Padraig & Lakia went into the darkness and Arwel & Amaris stayed out in the cavern. However, after a few moments, when it became obvious that the others weren't coming straight out, Jackson looked at the two with him and said, "I agree. I'll let them know and we'll go explore the other darkness." He didn't step into the darkness, just shouted through there and explained that they were going to explore the south east corner. The three in the altar room heard him and, assuming one of them responded, then he shouted back and all was well.

Which meant that there were two distinct groups. In the altar room each of the three of them did something very important and, perhaps by pure luck, doing things which worked well together. Padraig studied the altar, sitting in front of it, drawing it and trying to decipher it. He focused on the details, the small details. Lakia, meanwhile, she looked for things out of place, things which might not quite fit. She focused on the bigger picture.

And Niv prayed.

Now, Niv was in Padraig's hood so, unless she chose to come out, she wasn't going to see this, but she kept up her prayers and, as she did Padraig noticed that some of the figures in the carvings were... moving. Except no, that wasn't exactly what they were doing. They were shifting. He focused, for example, on a scene depicting three people, one of whom seemed to be sitting or kneeling, another standing and the third, much smaller than the others and almost like a child, who seemed to be floating behind the head of the one that was sitting. The figures were well displayed and each one of the three seemed to change between two different positions, flicking back and forth. The one who was sitting was looking ahead, then looking up to the one who stood. The one who was standing was looking up at something, then looking down to the other two. And the small, floating one? Well, that one was there, and then not.

Lakia, however, noticed that the glowing wall of light bricks behind the altar changed. It, too, moved between two patterns ~ not all the 'bricks' were lit up and they shifted between two distinct patterns. What they~ and Niv ~ might notice was that the light wall and the altar carvings moved in unison with each other and, it soon became obvious, they moved in unison with the cadence of Niv's prayers.
Meanwhile, Arwel, Amaris & Jackson stepped into the darkness on the south east of the cavern. It was a different experience for them. They stepped into it and were plunged, just momentarily, into darkness. But it was just for a moment, as they stepped through it. They found themselves in a small corner of the room, more of an alcove than anything else. However, their issues were twofold.

Firstly, as they stepped through they saw in front of them, in the alcove which was well lit and not at all dark, that there was what appeared to be a wolf, made entirely of ice there in front of them. It turned and snarled, its glowing red eyes apparently the only bit of it not made from entirely transparent ice. If any of the other three were there, they'd recognise it as the ice from the pyramid.

The other problem, or slight issue, or perhaps just challenge that they had was that, somehow, as the wolf jumped at Arwel, teeth aiming for his throat, it would be reasonable that one or all of them would take a step back. Which would lead to them discovering that the darkness behind them was darkness no longer.

Now, it was solid and they, therefore, were trapped.

In Room 1 You have left behind one secret. The honeycomb.
Those of you in Room 2 You have yet to explore the rockfall. You are also trapped behind a now-solid wall of shadows with a wolf made from ice trying to kill you.
Those of you in the altar room - you are in Room 3 ~ there are still secrets in this room.
Some of you will receive pm's regarding this post. If you do, it is up to you whether you share that information IC or not.
I will post again on the 17th April or sooner if everyone has posted by then.
This thread, and this adventure, is now closed to new players.

In the Altar Room
If you are planning on taking samples of anything in that room (altar, lantern, glowing ice wall, pyramid.. anything) please be very specific about how you are doing that. Include information on what tools you use / if you touch anything / where and how you store it. Thanks.
In the Alcove of Doom
Yeah, well, you're in combat - please don't control the wolfie. He's jumping at Arwel and his teeth seem to be very sharp. However, there is no guarantee that he will hit. Therefore, please just describe what you are trying to do and I will determine the outcome. Thank you!

Samples

Padraig and Arwel took water from the pond.
Amaris took samples of 5 plants
Padraig took bits of frozen corpse and stones from the rockfall. He also took a sample from the pillars.
Both Lakia and Padraig have darkstone and lightstone samples (multiple)
If I missed anything, drop me a pm. Don't worry about keeping track, I have a document, I just appreciate you checking in case I miss anything. Thanks.

Arwel was a bit nervous about exploring this other darkness, but that was only because he had no idea of what danger might lay on the other side. As such, as Jackson moved to yell and inform the others who had went into the first area, he took steps to prepare himself should anything happen. He took the time to load a bolt onto his pistol crossbow and kept it in hand, figuring he'd be able to fire faster than he'd be able to unsheathe his sword and swing it. Besides, what if the space was small? He'd risk harming someone with his sword. So, he figured that his ranged weapon would provide a better course of action. He pulled a few bolts out of his bag where he stowed them and made sure they were ready to be used in the slits on his baldric that he'd made, worn across the chest as it was, it would provide quick and easy access to the bolts should the need arise. He wasn't sure what to expect, and when they were at the entrance of the darkened area, he took a moment to collect some of the stones that seemed to be drawing in the light and making it disappear, for lack of a better word. He made sure to collect more than one of the darkstones, figuring the scholars would want many samples to experiment with to find out how they drew in the light like that. It was just as fascinating as the walls of the caves that seemed to emit light. He needed to remember to take more samples of the lightstones as well, wanting to have some for his own personal use.

So as they stepped through the darkness, Arwel had his crossbow at the ready, not sure what to expect. One thing he was not expecting, however, was for there to be a wolf made of ice in front of them. Before he even had a chance to react to the idea of an ice wolf statue, he realized it was alive! He raised his crossbow with his dominant hand and fired as he took a step back, aiming for the mouth of the beast simply because that was directly in his line of sight at the moment. His other arm came up to try and protect his throat, not sure if what he did would be enough to move it from its attempt to rip out his throat. Not sure of the combat skills of the others in his current party, he worried that to properly defend himself, he'd have to reveal what he was and melt the blasted thing, trying to see if he could reload the crossbow before it landed on him to fire it off again.

Niv became entranced by her own rhythmic chanting and It gave her an overwhelming sense of peace and warmth. The cold of the cave and the ominous felling no longer bothered her, they were still present but didn’t matter to her. Niv couldn’t possibly know what was really happening but she assumed it was the spirits responding with positive waves of energy to her prayers to Ashan. Her eyes were closed in concentration, but opened when the light of her glow stone grew in intensity. Niv stopped for a moment and the light faded once more. Niv frowned and commenced praying and the stone responded almost right away.

“The spirits are very strong in dis place.” Niv called out from Padraigs hood not knowing what was going on outside. The other two explained what her prayers were doing and Niv poped her head out to see. She recited a few words of her prayer and the pictures did in fact move.
“Wow dis place is crazy.” Niv said as her tiny eyes bugged out in awe at what her simple actions had done.

Niv was unlikely to be able to teach the others her prayer but she said it slow so that they could attempt if they chose to. The slow speed would also help them read the messages on the alter with greater ease.

She soon began experimenting with turning her chant into a hymn, by adding more words and a simple melody to it. Niv's singing voice had a natural sweetness to it that was likely inspired by the song birds she mimicked. Though it was clear she wasn’t as experienced in musical composition by the way her song was arranged.

The darkness was a looming thing that left Amaris with a sense of hopelessness the longer they looked at it. Yet, it was hard to tear their eyes away from. They swallowed hard, jaw clenched. This expedition was indeed something else. Nothing like the walks they used to go on with their parents. Despite the overpowering dread that threatened to drown it out, a giddiness remained. When Jackson directed they and Arwel into another spot of darkness, they complied eagerly. They had not been as wise as their redhaired companion in bringing a weapon—or maybe they had been. With minimal skill in using a blade of any kind, it would be safe to say that they likely would have hurt themselves with any weapon they had decided to bring along. Maybe they should have found someone to teach them the basics. They peered into the darkness, a silent debated halted as they slid their hands over the ice of the walls. Much like with the rockfall and the other area of darkness, the ice seemed to draw in light. Whatever the cause, surely it would be something to examine. Once more they broke off a few chips of the ice and placed the fragments in a vial. A glance in Arwel’s direction told them they weren’t alone in that train of thought.

As they ventured further in, the darkness gave way to an alcove. Brows furrowed, the sense of hopelessness returned with a vengeance. Or maybe the giddiness had finally fled. Both were likely to have happened at the sight of the ice wolf. It turned to face them and for a quick moment, they wondered if they’d left Posey something to eat before they’d left. It wasn’t like anyone else could hear this thought, though. It dissolved into panic as the wolf lunged for Arwel. They stepped back instinctively, only for their back to press against something solid and cold. As they swiveled to see what blocked them, the panic set in further. Where there had once been darkness was now a wall, and no way out. Eyes wide and breath caught in their throat, Amaris turned once more to the others. They would not be ashamed to admit their astonishment at the sight of Arwel fighting back. They wouldn’t have been able to do the same. It was their momentary fortune that they had not been the focus of the initial attack.

This only meant that they had more time to further spiral into a breakdown of sorts. The primary goal was escape. The instincts of fight or flight had long since kicked in, and flight had been the unspoken victor. They proceeded to feel around the wall for something that would trigger the return to darkness. Maybe then they could walk through and reach the others. They could call for help. They could do anything, but all they could manage were whimpers and the frantic sliding of their gloved hands over the ice.

The alter pictures were...moving. There was no way for Lakia to deny that, and the fact did little to settle her already jangled nerves. It took her a moment to realize that there was a pattern to the way the pictures moved, that they moved with the Tunawa's prayer. After a moment, she noticed the light shifting and turned to look at the glowing wall. The light was reacting to the Tunawa's prayer as well, it seemed. "Definitely a temple of some sort, I think." she said, before she bent down to more closely examine the moving drawings.

"Do you think that these symbols represent us?" she asked as she watched them move. "Maybe they're meant to be instructional, I mean. Tell us something about this room, or something about another room in these caves." she said as she watched, occasionally looking around the room for anything else that was reacting to Niv's praying.

[Moderated Thread]Mapping the Ice Caves: Trial 1

The pillars in the previous room had fascinated Padraig. He couldn't have known the ramifications for himself, due to the simple act of tapping one last time on one of the things. At that moment he'd been interested in composition, in resonance, and how the unique shape of each might impact the sounds made.

It was all noted, written down and recorded however, and they'd moved on into the darkest of dark tunnels. Where he'd been convinced a small child had taken his hand, had smiled at him and had walked beside him. There was definitely more at work here than easily explainable science. Niv was right. If there were spirits, then they were strong in this place. So strong, that someone ordinarily unable to see or hear them, suddenly did.

But he'd sat down in front of the altar, and Niv began to pray. He studied, he recorded, he drew and took notes. But more and more, a strange sensation was beginning to wash over him from the inside out. To an extent that Niv's chants began to sound as if they were in a sort of echo chamber. His eyes fluttered closed and he rocked in place briefly as a sense of...what, washed over him?

Padraig had never dabbled much in mind altering substances. Sure, sometimes chemical or alchemical concoctions let off fumes that could alter the senses somewhat. But this was different. A sense of well-being bordering on euphoria. Rapture, was what slipped unbidden through his mind. Much like what fanatical devotees to any given Immortal must feel at the height of performing some sort of devotional.

It took some doing, but he shook his head to try and clear away the sensation, and then looked back at the altar to study it further. It struck him that the symbols were moving, in time with Niv's prayers. Surely he wasn't imagining that too? And then he noted the three figures, and the three of them in the room, and how Lakia also moved.

"I think you're right," he said in response to Lakia's comments. "It's us. It must be." But what could the message possibly be, if it was one? He wondered, what would happen if he stood up, if he moved to a different place in the chamber while watching the images and their reactions. He'd try that, so got himself up off the floor, moving closer but further to the right of the altar, and slowly.

The First Trial

There were two distinct things going on that trial, in two separate places. Once might consider whether it had been a good idea to split up in the first place, but then, who really knew?

Hindsight, as they say, always has perfect vision.

So, in the room with the altar, the three of them were exploring. Niv prayed, Lakia examined the scenes depicted in the carving as did Padraig, after a moment of almost religious fervour, an epiphany of some kind. Now, all three of them could see the same things; the pictures depicted were moving, shifting between two things. The light bricks in the back wall, too, were moving in two repeated patterns.

Lakia spoke and drew attention to it, Niv experimented with her prayers. They both found some quite strange things; or perhaps not so strange, relatively speaking. It was entirely possible that they noticed something before Padraig even thought about moving, but as soon as he did, it became apparent to them all.

When Lakia moved, as she moved, the lantern like thing, hanging suspended above them and which none of them had really paid attention to, it glowed in time with her movement. Then, Niv checked out the effects of different kinds of prayer and the wall behind was what shifted and changed with that. Finally, Padraig thought about moving. He didn't do it - or rather before he did it, the pictures he was looking at moved to show what it was that he was thinking about.

Then, at precisely that moment, as the three of them thought, prayed and moved in unison, the pyramid which sat atop the altar lit up, swirling in a mass of colours, like sunlight through a prism. The colours swirled and shifted and then, the pyramid itself lit in a sudden, beautiful bright white light. As it did, the "lantern", the wall and the altar all stopped shifting and changing, and the darkness of the black stone behind them simply was no more. It wasn't that it became light, it just was no longer sucking in and draining the light. What that might have done to the rockfall, of course, they did not and could not know.

Meanwhile, Arwel, Amaris & Jackson were in quite a different situation and one far less serene. They were in the alcove and it was probably fair to say that they were in a position of not enjoying themselves. Arwel, thankfully, had prepared and, as the wolf snarled and leapt at him, he fired his crossbow. He didn't manage to hit the thing in the mouth, but he did manage to hit it in the head and then, the three of them had a strange experience.

The ice wolf exploded.

The bolt hit it, and it exploded. It was solid ice and shards of it flew out at the three of them. Arwel already had his arm up to protect himself and that saved him, really. As he was directly in front of it, that meant that he would have otherwise been hit in the face. However, he got a number of cuts along his arms and a few which hit his face. Of course, the thick clothing helped. Amaris was in a state of panic and, as the wolf exploded, shards of ice hit Amaris like shards of glass. Again, thankfully, the thick clothing really helped and she had no major injuries, but there were a few cuts and abrasions. Jackson had the same, and one particularly unpleasant cut on his face, but he waved away any concerns.

As Amaris scrabbled, the darkness simply disappeared. Like it had for the other three (although currently neither group knew that), the dark stones stopped leeching light and instead, the alcove was just part of the cavern with no darkness evident at all.

The wolf was in shards and piece on the floor. The pieces remained there, not melting, not moving just... being there.
Eventually, of course, after they had explored their areas, taken samples and so on, they would find themselves all six back in the main cavern. Now, there were no areas of darkness, not at all. There was an alcove and a short tunnel to a room with a strange altar in it.

Once they were back together again, Jackson would insist on tending to any wounds, even small ones and even his own. Then, he would be more than happy for people to go and explore areas each other had been in. Whatever they had done in the altar room was done, it seemed, and nothing in there moved or changed, now, it was just very bright. The alcove itself was unremarkable, but if anyone did look then they would recognise, or Jackson would point out, that the wolf seemed to be made from the same kind of 'ice' that the pyramid was. The rockfall now held no fear for anyone.

Jackson sighed and asked. "The way I see it, though it's hard to keep track of, we're knocking on in time. I suggest we check out that rockfall, then make camp. Or, at most, check out one more room. That's your choice, I'll go with the majority. But no more than that."

Who knew, he appreciated a democracy...

Amaris braced themselves as the wolf exploded, eyes shut as they turned away. They hissed as the ice shards flew towards them, though adrenaline kept them from feeling the pain for the moment. It was quiet for a moment longer before they opened their eyes. Eyes dewy with unshed tears, they took a moment to access their surroundings. They noted that the wall was no more, the same as the darkness they had walked through. It was merely the clear passage way they had walked through. Their fear mingled with astonishment at this fact and they turned to see if the others were seeing the same thing they were. It would appear the general idea was they had. Despite wanting to move away, anticipation made them turn back to the wolf. It had been too easy, but then again they had done nothing in any way to contribute. They flushed at this thought, gaze trained on the ice shards. As far as Amaris could see, they didn’t move. They remained in place; no gathering together to reform the wolf or even melting. At any other time, they might have tried to put further thought into it, but shaken up as they were the only thing they wanted now was to leave.

As the groups reconvened in the main cavern, Amaris turned their attention to Arwel. They had been useless before, but the least they could do was treat a few wounds. They’d seen a first aid kit in the store house and went to retrieve it. They returned shortly thereafter and approached Arwel first. Their other group mates didn’t appear beat up in any way. “Let me help,” they offered the redhaired man, a smile on their face. It stung slightly, given the adrenaline had left them in the right sense. From what they could see of them before them, he’d sustained only a few minor cuts despite being so close. They made a mental note to thank Jackson for making sure they hadn’t ventured into the caverns without thick coats.

Jackson posed the question of what they would do next. Splitting up was not a decision they wished to repeat, but there was something that had begun to bother them. If the others had seen an altar, and they an ice wolf that attacked immediately, there had to be some connection. Was the wolf there to protect something or was it merely a distraction, a repellant of sorts? Then there was also the honeycomb wall, and the laughter they had heard there. Amaris was not too knowledgeable on spirits, but there had to be some sort of connection.

“I would like to revisit the first cavern. I hadn’t said this before, but when I was at the honeycomb wall, there were…voices, laughter. I think—I think it was children’s laughter, but it was only for a trill. There could still be someone there.” They didn’t add that it could also be something else; they had only just begun to calm down enough for fully rational thought.

Arwel was very grateful that he had thrown his arm up as, when the bolt hit the ice wolf in the head, it exploded, sending sharp ice bits everywhere. Considering how close the wolf had gotten to him before exploding, if his arm had not been up, he could have been blinded by the ensuing ice shards. As it was, his arm got cut up pretty bad, and he even felt the sting on his face that said his arm hadn't protected him from all the ice. Still, at least it hadn't gotten him in the face. He lowered his arm when he felt it was safe, then looked at the remains of the wolf on the ground. He nudged some of the shards with his foot, and when they didn't move, figured that the scholars might like to take a look at the ice that was once living. He bent to gather a few shards, then winced when he realized a few shards of the ice was in his arm and took a moment to pull them out with a wince, glad it hadn't been buried too deep, though still deep enough to draw blood and be rather painful. He was just glad it wasn't his writing arm that had been hurt, though if he seemed in pain or worried, he didn't show it other than biting his lip a bit. After seeing if there was anything else of interest in the alcove, he turned to follow the others out into the main room, where they met up with the other group. Arwel was figuring he'd tend to his own wounds, and was going to pull out his first aid kit he had brought when he noticed the taller female (had she given him her name?) came back with one and approached him. He smiled and said, "Thanks, my name is Arwel, by the way." He figured an introduction was in order, or rather long overdue, especially since she was kind enough to offer to help him with his injuries. With any luck, he could pass off being warm to the touch from all the layers he was wearing if she asked while helping him with the scratches and small punctures from the ice shards he'd pulled out of his arm. "That ice wolf was rather strange, wasn't it?" he commented after she finished, glancing at the alcove before looking to the tunnel where the other 3 of their party had ventured. He was curious about what they found, so when all the wounds were tended to, he took a moment to go peer into the tunnel they had ventured down, looking at the altar with interest before retreating and glancing back to the other room, wondering if the rockfall had any secret to it like these dark areas had.

When Jackson proposed the idea of inspecting the rockfall before making camp, he nodded in agreement, though before he could say anything, Amaris spoke, telling of what she experienced in the first room. Well, that was certainly interesting. "I think the rockfall is a good place to investigate, but so is the area we have not yet seen in the first room. If we were to check out that honeycombed wall, I think to inspect it to anything beyond a cursory look, we'd need someone small who would be willing to volunteer and climb into it to look around properly. If no one is willing to do that, it might be better to inspect the rockwall instead, as our combined efforts might prove more fruitful." He was peering at the snow beneath his feet as he spoke, his voice only as raised as needed to be heard by the others.

When the pyramid started to glow with a myriad of colors, Lakia covered her eyes and stepped back from the pyramid, before closing her eyes completely and turning away from the alter as the pyramid started to emit a bright white light. However, it seemed it was harmless, though the room appeared to have stopped reacting to what the trio was doing. In addition, the tunnel was no longer filled with shadows but now looked...entirely normal. "Interesting." she muttered quietly. "We should check with the others. I'd suggest not trying to cut samples off of anything in here. Something tells me it would not be appreciated." she said calmly before she started back to the rest of the group.

Lakia and her group were uninjured, so she just watched as Jackson tended to the other groups wounds. When he asked what they should do next, she turned towards the rock wall. "It's possible what we did in the alter room affected the rock wall. I'd like to find out." she said. If the majority ruled on the rock wall, she'd head straight over to it and start looking for anything that looked out of place or different.
