The Ice Caves of Ishallr
The First Trial
13th Ashan 717
Those who had desire to do so took samples of the water and then, finally, they left the first room behind.
In the second room Amaris examined the rockfall, she too noticed what Niv had seen. It was like the rocks themselves were sucking the light around them and, as she stood there she felt... melancholy wash over her. However, she did get a glimpse, and that was of a cavern, stretching back and out of there. There was definitely some space behind that rockfall. But just the proximity to them made her feel more and more hopeless.
Padraig meanwhile, examined the pillars, taking a sample of one. He looked at the size and shape, they were all different but as he noted them down he saw that they all had different numbers of sides ~ and they were in an increasing number from a rough, but definitely six-sided pillar up to the one with eighteen sides. That was the twelve of them. Perhaps flush with that discover, he did something apparently harmless. He tapped one of them.
Then, three of them moved forward into the next cavern, through the tunnel of darkness. This marked an important moment for them, because it meant that they split up. Niv, Padraig & Lakia went into the darkness and Arwel & Amaris stayed out in the cavern. However, after a few moments, when it became obvious that the others weren't coming straight out, Jackson looked at the two with him and said, "I agree. I'll let them know and we'll go explore the other darkness." He didn't step into the darkness, just shouted through there and explained that they were going to explore the south east corner. The three in the altar room heard him and, assuming one of them responded, then he shouted back and all was well.
Which meant that there were two distinct groups. In the altar room each of the three of them did something very important and, perhaps by pure luck, doing things which worked well together. Padraig studied the altar, sitting in front of it, drawing it and trying to decipher it. He focused on the details, the small details. Lakia, meanwhile, she looked for things out of place, things which might not quite fit. She focused on the bigger picture.
And Niv prayed.
Now, Niv was in Padraig's hood so, unless she chose to come out, she wasn't going to see this, but she kept up her prayers and, as she did Padraig noticed that some of the figures in the carvings were... moving. Except no, that wasn't exactly what they were doing. They were shifting. He focused, for example, on a scene depicting three people, one of whom seemed to be sitting or kneeling, another standing and the third, much smaller than the others and almost like a child, who seemed to be floating behind the head of the one that was sitting. The figures were well displayed and each one of the three seemed to change between two different positions, flicking back and forth. The one who was sitting was looking ahead, then looking up to the one who stood. The one who was standing was looking up at something, then looking down to the other two. And the small, floating one? Well, that one was there, and then not.
Lakia, however, noticed that the glowing wall of light bricks behind the altar changed. It, too, moved between two patterns ~ not all the 'bricks' were lit up and they shifted between two distinct patterns. What they~ and Niv ~ might notice was that the light wall and the altar carvings moved in unison with each other and, it soon became obvious, they moved in unison with the cadence of Niv's prayers.
Meanwhile, Arwel, Amaris & Jackson stepped into the darkness on the south east of the cavern. It was a different experience for them. They stepped into it and were plunged, just momentarily, into darkness. But it was just for a moment, as they stepped through it. They found themselves in a small corner of the room, more of an alcove than anything else. However, their issues were twofold.
Firstly, as they stepped through they saw in front of them, in the alcove which was well lit and not at all dark, that there was what appeared to be a wolf, made entirely of ice there in front of them. It turned and snarled, its glowing red eyes apparently the only bit of it not made from entirely transparent ice. If any of the other three were there, they'd recognise it as the ice from the pyramid.
The other problem, or slight issue, or perhaps just challenge that they had was that, somehow, as the wolf jumped at Arwel, teeth aiming for his throat, it would be reasonable that one or all of them would take a step back. Which would lead to them discovering that the darkness behind them was darkness no longer.
Now, it was solid and they, therefore, were trapped.
