As an infant, Lectus was found afloat in a crib at sea off the coast of Almund by his 'father', a biqaj by the name of Kaslin Ryj'Ufnaj. Kaslin, being a lonely sailor with no family of his own, took Lectus under his wing, giving him a name and raising him in the tradition of his father. He brought him up on the Lazuli Rat, teaching him all the basics of the mariner's trade.
For the most part, as a toddler the ithecal exhibited traits that showed a keen intelligence and aptitude for finding shiny things. The young ithecal kept poaching items from around the boat, that went missing until Kaslin found them below decks, where the Ithecal kept his hoard. Far from angry, he put his aptitude to use as he began growing, and by the time he could talk and walk, he was negotiating the prices of their salvage with traders and other people.
Adolescence
Lectus spent much of the rest of his childhood oblivious to the strangeness of his father Kaslin. Unknown to the Ithecal, Kaslin was in fact a mage, strong in the arts of Defiance. What might've seemed out of the ordinary to any other person, was commonplace to Lectus . Kaslin made the waters dance and move to entertain his son. Lectus didn't know it was magic, and only knew that when Kaslin was around, the waters rejoiced. He thought perhaps he was blessed or beloved by U'frek.
Kaslin was getting on in age, by the time Lectus himself approached his own coming of age. Kaslin was stricken with sickness after a particularly rough voyage at sea. When he revealed to Lectus that he suspected he was dying, he offered to grant him the inheritance of his clan, passed down from generation to generation since the time of Kaslin's great great great grandfathers.
Not understanding, but excited and intrigued, Lectus availed himself of the offer. Without warning, Kasling embraced Lectus , and jumped with him into the sea, dragging him down beneath the waters. As they sank, Lectus could feel a strange power enter his body. At first, he struggled against the deadly embrace, trying to get out of it so he could swim to the surface.
Try as he might, though, Kaslin held fast to the Ithecal. And as the Ithecal breathed in water, he felt it begin to defer to him. He felt the mystical connection to the water, as it acknowledged him as a Defier, someone who would command the elements.
At some point during the initiation, Kaslin lost his grip on life, and began drifting down into the deeps. Lectus , despite his love for the old man, knew that this was the end he wished for himself. To sink beneath the waves and feed the fish was a sailor's lot, and Kaslin wouldn't have it any other way.
Post Initiation
Lectus spent the rest of the arc plying the seas, and fishing out treasures such as pearls, shells, and other valuables from the sea. Unfortunately, he sailed into the wrong harbor near Volta, as the harbormaster had a grudge against Kaslin and his kin. The harbormaster put Lectus's Lazuli Rat at drydock, refusing to take it off unless Lectus did an impossible task for the man.
This is where Lectus's history ends and his story begins.
