3. Lady of Malice [FYW Event Chapter 3]

Chapter Three
Lady of Malice

Image
Continued from here.

In the chaos of the riot, Abra found himself an unexpected ally. A biqaj woman, in her mid-20s, with hair that faded from dark to light. She could be beautiful, if not for the scar that marred across her face or the faded black tattoos around her eyes.

She gave no name.

She only gave a promised chance to escape.

She hadn’t even responded unfavorably to the pick-up line that Abra had given her.

Around her, the Syn mage could see a faint aura of gold and of a pale green. The aura gathered around a glowing band around her left forearm that floated just off the skin. No brighter than candlelight, though, it was easily missed in the dining hall due to the bright shine of the braziers and lanterns.

…In the narrow corridor, barely lit by torches, the band showed more obviously.

The biqaj woman had opened one of the dining hall doors with use of a key she’d taken out from somewhere under her small and tight-fitting tunic. It’d swung the door open. She hurried Abra past with her before closing and locking it behind them, eager to not be noticed by any of the guards trying to quell the riot.

“Stay quiet,” she told Abra in a hushed voice. Light on her bare feet, the thin woman led down the corridor.

There were no doors in this corridor. It was identical to the corridor that the guards had escorted Abra down on the way to the dining hall. At the far end, the arched entrance to a spiral staircase loomed.

“You can see magic, can’t you? I heard you say so,” she whispered to him once they reached the stairs.

She started to head up the steps, keeping close to the inner wall and she gestured for Abra to stay near the outer wall. “Keep an eye out for anyone from either direction. I’m not very useful in a fight, so it’s best we avoid any.”

As they crept along the spiral stairs, she added in another whisper, “My name is Vy’Akor. Call me Vy.”

“Before we…” she paused, halted her steps, then looked upward. She waited, glanced at Abra, then continued along once certain that it had been nothing. “Before we can leave this place, we need armor… Will you help me, sir…?”

She looked for his name in return.

They reached a rounded door. Closed and reinforced wood with iron, Vy held a finger to her lips in a shush gesture. She slid over to the door, slipped the same key in, and a quiet click of the lock giving way sounded. She lowered into a crouch, opened the door a peek, then gestured for Abra to look around the opening. She asked, “Do you see anything?”

Past the door, another hallway would be there. Only this one had plenty of doors on both sides. At the far end, a pair of guards chatted. Neither had auras to be seen, but they were plain enough in their armor.
Choice 1
Q. Does Abra inform Vy of the guards? Y/N
Regardless, before Vy moved forward, the sound of a horn blared across the entire prison. An alarm. The guards immediately started to march down the hall, toward the spiral staircase. Doors opened alongside the corridor to reveal even more guards in various states of dress.

“Shit,” muttered Vy. She let go of the door. She started up the stairs, then gestured for Abra to follow. “Hurry!”
Choice 2
Q. Does Abra follow after Vy quietly or frantically?
Quiet / Frantic
Vy led up past another door, where similar rustle of armor and voices of guards could be heard under. It was almost drowned out by the still blaring horns.

She reached a third door, but the key wouldn’t work in the lock. “What…” She looked toward Abra and said, “It won’t open! What if they come up here?! Oh no…”

…and then, a faint click sounded in the lock.

The door creaked open an inch.

Vy looked at it, then at Abra, then down the stairs where the familiar echo of armored boots sounded. She swore, grabbed Abra by the wrist, then pressed the door open and hurried them inside. Vy shut the door with a slam, winced at the noise, then looked down at a corridor that had lanterns rather than torches.

A couple of the lanterns had been torn down, glass and paper littered on the floor in spots of darkness that would’ve otherwise been lit with a warm glow. Carpet runners lined the stone floor, and the walls had velvet tapestries of different symbols on them.

It smelled sweet, like cold season spices for pies and cakes. A waft of cinnamon so strong that it could almost be tasted. Only two doors resided in the corridor, right across from each other. At the end of the hall was a large oil painting of Overseer Grimnir alongside a couple other people… only whoever the pair was, the canvas had been slashed apart to mar their features, only leaving the slightest hint of silken green attire and a long bow of polished oak wood.

Image
The door to the left opened with a creak. A young woman appeared at the curved frame. Gray-blue eyes, long brunette hair that went past her hips, and an almost unnerving neutral expression of composure; she stared at the two prisoners.

She wasn’t dressed in a tunic, nor armor. Rather, she wore a simple white nightdress with modest lace frills at the edges. In the lantern’s glow, the white proved thin enough that anyone could see the tint of her skin underneath and the shape of her slender form.

Vy looked at Abra, her eyes wide, and obviously uncertain of what to do.

Abra could see unnatural shadows curled around the stranger's shoulders.

“Hello,” said the human. “Are you lost?”

Re: 3. Lady of Malice [FYW Event Chapter 3]

Abra was glad to have found a companion that seemed to share his indifference for all the fighting that they were leaving behind. He was convinced that anyone who stayed in that room was a fool for doing so and hoped that they weren’t the only two that ended up escaping. He didn’t have much time to dawdle and think through his situation as he had completed only the first step of escaping this place. The woman he was with claimed to know a way out and possessed a key that would supposedly take them where they needed to go.

Abra walked calmly throughout their short journey. He was no master of stealth but his ability to act under stress allowed him not to make too much unnecessary noise. He tried to keep quiet and only responded when talked to. His responses along the way were “Yes, I can see magic” and “I’m not a great fighter either. I never would have thought to be one before I lost my ability to use magic.” and “sure, armor. If I see some I’ll point some out.”

Armor? What use did they have for armor? Abra had a hard enough time walking around in his leathers and would definitely be encumbered by the metal that the guards wore. He didn’t think armor would do him any good without the ability to rupture for mobility. But if the woman wanted armor, he’d be on the lookout for armor.

They came to a corner and Abra whispered, “yes, two guards, I don’t see any magic on em.” Then the alarm sounded and he matched Vy’s path up the stairwell. He wasn’t necessarily frantic with his haste, but he didn’t focus on stealth now that the alarm was masking any noise that he thought would be noticed.

Abra only really started to panic when the key didn’t work. This was yet another problem he could have easily solved by crumbling the door with fracture touch. “if they come up the stairs we can just push them down,” he said since it was the first thing that came to mind. They did have to go back downstairs eventually, he presumed if they were going to get back on the path to escape. But then the lock clicked and the door opened. “did the key work?” he asked. It was an important question because he didn’t need to be sticking around in a room with a magical door. Unfortunately he didn’t have any time to debate this notion and was hurried into the room.

Cinnamon overwhelmed Abra’s nose making him scrunch it up. He noticed a painting of the overseer and the green attire of the slashed out person. Something told him that someone had a lot to hide or some big anger issues. Once again he found little time to think as a door opened and a woman investigated who had come to visit.

“I’m Abra. Businessman, mage, some might even say a hero who’s saved lives in the Syns. My companion and I were on our way out of this place so no, not lost exactly. We thought we’d rest up in here until the guards stopped moving about. Who are you? I take it you have some relation to the overseer or one of her slashed out compatriots? And might you be swayed into joining us or pointing us in the direction of some equipment for our journey?”

To Vy he said in a whisper, “I have an uneasy feeling about those shadows. Be on your toes.” Abra could see the worry in his companion’s eyes but he didn’t share it. He had a knack of running into strange people in strange places and learned to just go with it. There was a lot worse that the new lady could do other than say no so he felt no shame in asking for help.

Re: 3. Lady of Malice [FYW Event Chapter 3]

Did the key work?

Vy shook her head. She grabbed onto his wrist and pulled him inside. She shut the door with a slam. When the other woman appeared at the door near the hallway, the fair-haired biqaj moved behind Abra, as if to hide behind him. She pulled at the hem of her short prisoner tunic in a way that suggested insecure vulnerability.

While Abra introduced himself, genuinely, to the other human, the brunette’s gray-blue eyes slid to look between the two prisoners. She smiled in a small polite manner. Her gaze moved over to look at the painting at the end of the corridor when Abra mentioned it.

During this, as he whispered to Vy while the human looked away from them, Vy grabbed onto Abra’s arm at the elbow. She whispered back, “Maybe we should leave.”

The human woman turned her gaze back, away from the painting, and said, “That’s not me.”

“My name is Charlotte,” she introduced herself. “This is where I’m kept. It’s been so long since I had new visitors…”

The sounds of armor echoed against stone approached behind the tower door.

“I have places you can hide,” she offered to the two, then opened her door wider for them to enter the room.

Vy looked at Abra, then the door, and swore again. She walked past him, into the room. Between the choice of the guards or the odd woman, it seemed no choice at all. The biqaj woman followed a gesture to a tall wardrobe, where she opened it up and then settled to hide among dresses and cloaks.

Charlotte set a hand lightly on Abra’s shoulder, and guided him into the room. She whispered, “Not there. Not for a hero.” She walked aside, to the wall, then pushed into the stone. Clicks sounded, then the stone slid aside to reveal a nook just large enough for a single person to hide within the wall. Charlotte nodded, and waited for Abra to get in before she would touch it to seal him inside.

“Hurry,” she said. The tower door had opened, and the familiar sound of a few pairs of marching boots echoed in the carpeted hallway.

“Lady Grimnir, are you well?” called one of the guards in a booming voice.

“One moment, I’m not decent!” replied Charlotte in a high-pitched voice. “What is going on?”

“There’s been a riot, some prisoners are on the loose,” explained the guard from outside the door, but he didn’t enter yet.

Charlotte held a finger over her lips for Abra to stay quiet.

Regardless if Abra had held still, regardless if he'd followed instructions - wherever he ended up depending on his choices, whether in the hiding nook of the wall or stubbornly outside of it, or hidden elsewhere in the room - in the next bit, the door opened and a pair of guards walked through.

The one guard immediately swept over the room, and the other one approached Charlotte. He settled a hand over the hilt of his sword. The search took to the wardrobe, where the guard opened it up and found Vy. After a momentary struggle, the biqaj woman shouted as she was dragged out of the wardrobe. Vy couldn't fight against an armored soldier though.

“She threatened to kill me if I said anything,” explained Charlotte about the presence of Vy.

“Let go of me, leggo!" Vy twisted to get her tunic free from the soldier's grasp.
Guidelines
Same as previous post.

You know now that the human woman's name is Charlotte.

This one will be very freeform, place Abra where-ever in this scene - whether he followed Charlotte's directions or not, whether the guards can see him, and whether he tries to do anything when Vy is found, etc.

Re: 3. Lady of Malice [FYW Event Chapter 3]

The door opened.

The guards swept the room.

The one guard found Vy in the wardrobe. He dragged her out by her hair, the short locks patterned like the rays of sunlight brightening to the ends. The Biqaj female twisted about, and shouted, trying to get free. The guard punched her over the head. Dizzy, Vy slumped against his arm. He easily lifted her up to carry and nudged his fellow guard with a point to the seemingly frozen-in-place ex-Syn.

Charlotte insisted that she’d been threatened.

The second guard took hold of Abra, who simply gave up without hope. Without his magic, after all, what else could he do? The guard nodded to the brunette woman and then gestured for the other guard to head out.

"Anyone else, miss?" asked the guard.

“No, but thank you, sirs! I don't know what I would do without your courage and bravery in the face of all these monsters,” she smiled and added, “I will inform my mother of your heroism.”

"Not necessary. We're just doing our jobs, miss," said the guard, then he motioned for his partner to leave along with him.

Charlotte watched while the guards dragged off the two prisoners. She followed them down the hall and held the stairwell door slightly open. She waited a moment, then slowly stepped out to the spiral staircase.

If a riot was going on, that meant the guards were all busy, and they had mentioned other prisoners were on the loose…

...was it Ferret who'd caused this?

“We’ve been so lonely,” muttered Charlotte. “We deserve to visit him.”

She left her quarters and started down the staircase.
