Jasper sat quietly in the tent trying to think of what next to do. The fact that Jasper was sitting quietly in one of the chairs, his expression lost in thought had kept his family members from bothering the Aesir. The energetic young man would mediate at times, but that was different then this. Jasper had noticed his brothers awkwardly slip away, and seen Astra’s more thoughtful pause but decision to just let him be. Melrath was a land stepped in traditions that dated back centuries. Jasper didn’t view himself as a complex person, and was well aware that he wasn’t consider one of the intellectual stars of the Aesir. He wasn’t stupid though. He could see the values and handicaps of traditions and now as one the weight of his position as a guardian of Melrath traditions was weighting on him.
He could feel the spark within him beginning to twitch, it didn’t like him sitting so long. Jasper took a deep breath and pushed its promptings deep down to turn his attention towards what he needed to do. True they were living in a tent, but they had set up a new homestead in a new area. There were traditions and ceremonies that were performed for such events. Jasper could instantly see an issue with it. Calling upon the Induk’s of Melrath was NOT appropriate in this context, but should he just not do it. The more he though about it the more he thought that it should be something different, with elements of the past but something for the new.
He was now trying to figure out what those changes, and updates should be. Jasper wasn’t about to suddenly invoke the Immortals and honestly that thought hadn’t crossed his mind. There were four elements here in Scalvoris he could call upon. Though there was last element. Eldloga.
In Melrath Jasper could easily think of a way to involve the Fire Spirit since Melrath didn’t have a Fire Induk, but Scalvoris did have one. Jasper noticed Astra poke her head into the tent to check on him, and he smiled at her. “Hi beautiful. Did you need me for something.” He asked.
“Not really.” She said walking in and closing the flap firmly behind her. “Just worried about you.”
“I am not sick.” Jasper said as Astra took the chair next to him. “I am just struggling with an idea. You know how dense I can be.”
“Jasper Lynond.” Astra suddenly said sharply, startling Jasper. “Stop that.”
“Stop what?” Jasper asked very surprised and confused.
“That self-deprecating speech.” Astra said a frown on her face. Jasper started at her in open mouth surprise. “Spirits, your brother Lynond isn’t here, nor are any of the other idiots.”
“What do they have to do with anything.” Jasper said still confused. “I know my abilities, I am not book smart.”
“Jasper you are smart, you just can’t be cooped up on a classroom.” Astra said. “And Lynond has everything to do with it. I am not one of the adults, I saw and was also on the receiving ends of the spiteful little ways he worked to keep everyone in their place. I saw how you played dumb to keep him from feeling intimidated by you.” Astra said.
“Well I will agree that Lynond hated not being the best.” Jasper said, and realized they were deviating from the conversation he had originally wanted to have. “I will work on not playing dumb, but that wasn’t what I was thinking about.” Jasper said. “The issue I was thinking about what if I should dedicate our new home.”
“Oh course we should.” Astra said calmly her expression confused. “Why wouldn’t we?”
“We would have to change it a fair amount to reflect our new home.” Astra expression was thoughtful and she nodded her head slowly in agreement. “My other big issue is figuring out how to include two fire spirits in it.”
“Two.” Astra asked surprised.
“Unlike us Scalvoris has its own Fire Induk, and we certainly can’t forget Eldloga.” Jasper said with a small smile. Astra nodded in agreement.
“So what are you thinking?”
“That is should be different, not just the same with a change of names but something unique.” Jasper said. Astra nodded her head and the two began to toss ideas around on how to do it. Jasper felt himself relax more as he talked with Astra about what they could do. It was nice to talk it out with someone. Jasper made a couple discoveries about himself that trial. That the person he loved and trusted most thought him very smart, and that talking things out with her helped him solve problems.
The next trial, which was also Jasper's birth trial, Jasper and Rewan gathered around and built a fireplace in the center of their part of the Sweetsong. The carefully dug a whole and cleared away any brush. It was easy enough to just throw a rocks around where you wanted the fire but they wanted to do something a bit more. At least until they moved to a new location this would be the center of there lives, this would be their hearth the heart of any home. Once the whole was dug the men collected stones that would encircle the hearth. Like with digging they didn’t just gather any stone, the brought them together and matched them up to and selected ones that would allow for each of cooking and act as support to the hearth.
While they were busy working on the hearth, Astra, Bryil and Dasjat were busy preparing a meal. Astra actually was preparing the meal, but Bryil and Dasjat where sent to fetch her fresh ingredients from the forest ranging from a fresh set of rabbits to various herbs and flavorings. The worked passed the midtrial meal each of the men specifically fasting in preparations for the evening activities. Astra normally would have joined them but given her pregnancy even back home she would be been exempt.
As Jasper and Rewan finished laying the fire they paused to look over their construction. Any mason would have been less then impressed but this was intentionally made from natural materials. Jasper hmmed for a few moments and then switched out one of the stones from one that Bryil had brought in from the forest on his last trip. Stepping back he tilted it as he looked at it again. Then he nodded and turned to Rewan. “Okay next step.” The two retreated into the brother’s tent since the other was being used to cook. Jasper got himself dressed in his Aesir apparel which included a sleeveless black shirt, and his black wrap. Rewan wasn’t a great artist but he could trace and so he applied the gold colored paint over Jasper’s own embla. Once that was done Jasper took a mirror and made temporary marks on his checks. On his right check he put the symbols for earth and water, while on the other he put the symbols for fire and air in the gold colored paint. He looked at his brother with a raised eyebrow. Rewan looked him over and then nodded his head. “You look very Aesirish.”
“That isn’t a word.” Jasper said shaking his head. His brother shook his head and grinned. Jasper stepped out and went to kneel before the new hearth. Jasper knelt so that he his legs where stretched out behind him. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes and sought peace and quiet. He opened himself to the world around him, not looking for anything, but just seeking to clear his mind and finish preparing him for this ceremony. As he cleared his mind he thought back to what he had been contemplating, and felt the Anoks of aspects of fire, water, air, and earth around him. He allowed them to whisper their nothings and everything. Jasper wasn’t hearing any great secrets just the same he had always heard but having opened himself for something new he felt the information was new.
As the sun reached mid afternoon Jasper could hear the others come and join him. He heard the clink of pans and such as the food that was to be cooked was placed by the new outdoor hearth. He continued to keep his eyes closed as his mind opened they moved about, eventually he heard the three of them kneel down. He waited only a moment more before he opened his eyes. He saw the world but in a way he was seeing it slightly differently. He could see the hearth and his family kneeling, his brothers to his left and his wife with the Tuwana Dasjat to the right. Here more then other places, he could tell that humans were as much a part of nature as anything else. The tents were there but they were a part of nature. This was one thing the Aesir of old had understood and tried to bring to their people. Ceremonies to remind and merge that relationship. He understood as he looked around something important that had become lost to many of his fellow priests. These ceremonies were important as long as they brough people into and understanding bond.
When Jasper spoke it wasn’t in the humorous farm boy attitude. It was more in keeping with his ceremony voice, but on this occasion it seemed deeper more wise. “On this trial we come to dedicate this home.” Jasper waved to indicate their small camp spot. “As we make this dedication, let us remember that we are dedicating ourself as much as these tents and this spot. We are children of Melrath and as such its mountains, rivers and woods will always be with us. As creatures of spirit and flesh though we can encompass so much more, and this place can and will become our home and gain our love.” Jasper lowered one hand the earth to touch it. “At this time we call upon Scaltoth, Scalvoris Induk of Earth, as the earth provides a solid surface, and houses the plants that grow both for good and ill. From the earth our bodies came and will return, we dedicate our home, wherever it may move, and ourselves to be stable as the ground, and allow life to blossom within these walls.” Jasper was seeing the world but the ceremony was his focus and while he could see the world he was only partiually aware as his family also touched the ground and whisper Scaltoth’s name. “Please give us your blessings this and future trials.”Jasper said simple.
He then paused and lit a torch and held out the flame before him. “We next call upon Faldrass, Scalvoris Induk of Fire, as fire brings change, and brings life and death. Fire exist with in each of us as the energy to affect our world, to fight and to live. We at this time dedicate our home and ourselves to live in the cycle of life, to grow with change, that our home will move with the world, and always be a source of strength.” The others each took the torch and whispered the Fire Induk’s name even as Jasper continued. “Please give us your blessings this and future trials.”
Jasper pulled out a bowl of water and held it up. “We call upon Ishallr, Scalvoris Induk of Water. Water can clean both this world, and a person. It sustains life but can be unpredictable and take it. We at this time dedicate our home and ourselves to helping others as water does for those who seek it. We will also stand strong and cleanse our home and our selves so that they are bastions able to do that which we much.” The bowl to was passed and the name whispered. “Please give us your blessings this and future trials.”
Jasper then raised his hands into the sky and spoke again. “We call upon Sweetwine, Scalvoris Induk of Air. The movement of air clears away the dust, fills the lungs of creatures, allows communication, while its lack takes life away. We dedicate our home and ourselves to air, that we may use it in celebration, that our homes with will be full of song, as well as ourselves. That we may use the air in our lungs to share words of wisdom. That we may use its movements to help others.” Jasper paused as the others raised their hands and whispered the Induks name. “Please give us your blessings this and future trials.”
“Induks of Scalvoris, we honor and praise you as we settle in your lands. May we be worthy of your blessings.” Jasper said as he placed his hands on his lap. The others each called out there own unique short prayer to the Induks.
Jasper reached next to him and picked up Eldloga’s Aspergillum. Holding it before him he stretched it out to the wood in the hearth. “Eldloga, The First Light, Dirri of the Hearth, Home, and Civilized Fire, you who isn’t bound to any specific nation or lands, at this time we also call upon you. Fire in the hearth, provides warmth, cooks our food, helps with healing. We dedicate our home, and ourselves to being a place where all are welcomed.” He finished putting Eldloga into the center of the cold hearth. “Light our hearth and be with us always, and help us share your blessings with others.” Then Eldloga lite the wood around his home bestowing his blessing upon this new home. Jasper withdrew the Aspergillum as the hearth began to dance faster then normal, and a image of the Dirri flair upward in sign that this hearth was one of his.
The group watched the hearth for a moment before Jasper looked at them, having finally slipped out of his meditation and his voice was back to itself. “Now let us honor the spirits with this meal.” He said as they all stood. It wasn’t anything complex, a rich stew, bread, veggies other such foods. There was enough for all of them, and more to spare if any neighbors wanted to participate in the meal.
