[Saoire Event] Perdita and Darius

Image
25th Trial of Zi'da in Arc 720

"It's time," Saoire said, looking at the small individual with her. They had been preparing for this for a long time - earlier, Saoire had been with them all, the group of her closest, and they had put together the final preparations. The night before, in her workshop, Saoire had told them how tonight they would travel all across Idalos bringing small gifts and good cheer. Children throughout the land had awoken this morning to find trinkets and tchotchkes, gifts given which brought smiles to young faces.

That had been last night. This trial, though, they were bringing together people who Saoire had selected. Individuals who were prepared to give to another - who had taken her prompting, in dreams and visions, and had moved forward - acted - to prepare a gift. And, for the first time, her children would be there when the gifts were exchanged. It was a privilege, and they all knew it. To be there, to witness the giving of a gift by a kind soul.

This was one such soul.

The magic which Saoire wove was more complex, more nuanced than many could understand. Indeed, it would seem that perhaps she had roped Ralaith in to this event - or maybe this was part of her own purview. It wasn't clear, but what was obvious was that these events took place in the literal blink of an eye. Perdita was going about their daily business, as was Darius when they heard the gentle tinkling of a bell. As their ears heard the sound, not yet sure whether it was indeed a bell or in fact the tinkling laughter of a sprite or fairy, they were suddenly somewhere else.

Perdita and Darius found themselves standing in a small island, where the waves crashed against the side and beautiful trees covered in snow coated the surrounding area. Standing with them was a woman, wearing a beautiful crown of pine cones, glitter, and many small and intricate baubles. She wore a white and crystal covered gown, a similar color to the snow around them, and even her hair shimmered with glitter. She smiled at the two of them.

"I bid you welcome!" They knew who she was, somehow, even before she spoke the next words, "I am Saoire, and this is my very dear friend.". She gestured to a brown Guinea Pig with blue eyes who stepped out from behind Saoire.

"Marla here, pleasure to see you both!", said the small individual. Looking around with wide eyes, the small bipedal guinea pig considered that she was really looking forward to being a part of this world.

"We are here," Saoire said, her voice gentle and bubbling with mirth and joy, "Because Perdita has a gift for you Darius". She gestured around, as though the gift was nearby. Which, Perdita would see, it was. "I will leave you, now, to give your gift, but Marla will stay with you, and when you are ready to go back to your lives, will facilitate that."

And, with the sound of a gentle wave crashing against the shore, Saoire was gone. The small creature with them smiled.

erdita was sitting in their home in Desnind, wrapped up in a blanket and carefully weaving a basket. The basket was for them to keep food in, maybe the bread which was delivered, or some fruit. She was twisting the thick cord around the frame, when suddenly she heard the twinkling of a bell. Looking up, Perdita smiled and then she turned to say something to Eli, but suddenly she was standing in a small clearing on a tiny island. The tree she was standing next to was covered in snow and she beamed in delight as she realised what was happening. Perdita was more than happy when she'd heard about this opportunity and she'd got to work quickly.

She didn't know who it was she'd been making the gifts for, but that hadn't mattered to Perdita. She was excited at the prospect of meeting them - she already had a very clear visual image of this person and who they were, or might be. But Perdita's eyes were drawn, at first, to Saoire. From the beautiful white dress to the glimmering shimmering sparkle of her skin, Perdita was amazed. Excitement bubbled in her chest and she then saw a ... was that a gerbil on two legs? Perdita looked at the small creature in amazement and a beaming smile crossed her expression. "Hello," she said softly. Her voice was naturally quiet and the almost painfully shy young woman blushed deeply as she said that. She smiled at the small gerbil-like creature as Marla waved a cheeky wave.

"Thank you," she said, to Saoire, and then she turned to the man who she had made gifts for. She blushed furiously as she offered him her hand to shake. "Hello. I'm Perdita," she said, her voice barely above a whisper as she did. She gestured then to a large wicker-work basket, with a lid, which was just behind them. "I.. I hope you enjoy them," Perdita said with a smile. "Merry Ziellmas."

She'd made - or scavenged - the items her self, but Perdita was of the opinion that she had put together something which, she hoped, he'd like. But, for the moment, she merely stood back and watched, then smiled down at Marla as the small guinea-pig (it was a guinea pig, Perdita realised suddenly) slipped a hand into hers.
The Basket
She's made the basket - she's competent at Basketweaving. It has handles either side and a lid. Sort of like this.

Inside the basket are a few things.
  • Some Salt Bouy in water. It is labelled with a hand-written tag which names it and explains what it is.
  • Some Cani'sliwa seeds. Again, labelled and with a full, carefully written, description.
  • A small basket (hand made), which has 5 jars of Dakir berries. Labelled fully.
  • A long basket (hand made) which has a collection of Moukou wood. Labelled fully.
  • Four hand made (competent) books. Each one is a different design. The first three have the following contents (competent writing, competent art ):
    • One is an illustrated book on woodworking techniques and known woods and their properties from around the world. It's an amalgamation of 3 such books found in Desnind library.
    • One is an illustrated book on sea legends and traditions among seafarers around the world. It's an amalgamation of 5 such books found in Desnind library.
    • One is an illustrated book on healthy cooking. It's an amalgamation of 4 such books found in Desnind library.
  • The fourth book is blank, except for the inside front cover, which reads. "May every journey be an adventure and the wind forever be in your sails."

Re: [Saoire Event] Perdita and Darius

Image
Arc 720, 25th of Zi'da
The Libertalia was scything its way through the Hollow Sea, forcing the water either side of its vast hull. Despite the strength of the wind that pushed it along its route towards Viden, the ocean itself was remarkably calm, with no angry swells to prevent its progress.

Her captain, meanwhile, was not so calm. Neither was he panicked, but rather there were feelings of elation running through him. He stood in his quarters, staring down at his desk which was - for once - empty. That meant there were no woodworking projects to work on, but more importantly, that there was no wooden mask to stare back up at him.

Darius had not long returned from gifting his creation to Zunylanih. The recipient had seemed an unusual fellow, but he had seemed grateful enough for the present, and Darius had felt confident that he'd chosen well.

And then he felt the ground beneath him shift like it had before. This time, rather than fear that the brig had collided with something, he waited...

...and found himself on another island. Saoire was there again, though Marla the guinea pig had taken the place of Percin the gerbil.

And opposite him stood a young brunette woman, her hazel eyes struggling to look up at him. He could see the awkward shyness in her demeanour, and he recognised it, for he had felt such feelings himself on many an occasion.

"Well met, Perdita," he spoke politely, his gravelly voice quiet. "I am Darius Baer."

The seafarer turned to look at the basket when the young woman gestured towards it, and his own eyes, their dark grey showing a grateful kindness, widened at the sight. He reached out and opened the lid, before beginning to look over its contents. With each new discovery, his expression of wonderment grew, and he sent fleeting glances in Perdita's direction. By the time he had thumbed through the last book, he realised he had been silent for quite some time.

Looking up, and seeing Perdita and Marla holding hands with one another, Darius was unable to prevent a wide smile from stretching across his face.

"Perdita, this is amazing," he finally spoke, shaking his head in a state of disbelief, "and far more than I deserve. You are too kind!"

A pang of guilt hit him, then, and he wondered if Zunylanih had been somewhat shortchanged. But that did nothing to temper the gratitude he felt towards Perdita.

arius was his name and, for all that Perdita blushed deeply, she also smiled. "Nice to meet you," she said, but then lapsed into silence and watched him. Marla kept hold of Perdita's hand and she smiled encouragingly to the obviously shy young woman. As Darius explored the gifts she had made for him, Perdita waited and she did not mind the silence at all. Silence, in fairness, was not something which bothered her. In fact, she liked it.

Glancing down at Marla, though, Perdita wondered at this little creature. She was, Perdita decided, definitely a guinea pig. She had never once seen a guinea pig like this, though, and she held on to Marla's hand - or was it paw, she wondered - and she squeezed gently. The little creature smiled and looked up at her. "it's alright," Marla whispered - although of course Darius could hear her. "I think he really likes it. Look, he looks happy. So do you. Why are your cheeks so red though?"

If the cheeks in question had been red before, they flamed hotter at that question, but Perdita did her best to answer, to be polite always. "It's blushing," she said and then admitted the simple truth of it. "I always blush." Talking about it, of course, made it worse so she was rather surprised that snow wasn't melting around her or that someone hadn't turned up with marshmallows to roast.

Then, Darius spoke and although her blushes did not abate, Perdita smiled a genuine smile of pleasure. "I'm happy," she said. A light frown creased her brow though, and she shook her head. "You deserve it," she said, about as firmly as she said anything ever. "Saoire told me." Marla nodded her head, eagerly. "She's right! Good people giving thoughtful gifts to good people mean you're a good person!"

Perdita knew that she had to be better at being social, so she spoke quietly. "I'm from Rharne," she said. "Living in Desnind" at the moment, anyhow. "Moving to Scalvoris" in the next few trials. "What about you?" Glancing down at the basket, she smiled. "You're a sailor?" Perdita had never sailed. She'd been born and raised in Rharne, then they'd taken the flutterbus to Desnind and were about to do the same to Scalvoris. So, she was intrigued.

"What's it like?"

She recognised that he probably couldn't tell her that in any level of detail, but if there was one thing which was always the case, it was that Perdita was interested. In the world, its people, the land and the sea and the air and everything in it. One trial, she hoped, she'd have written everything down. Recorded it and kept it safe and for those who came after.

One trial.

Re: [Saoire Event] Perdita and Darius

Darius tried to offer Perdita the gentlest and most reassuring smile he could manage. He didn't want the young woman to feel like he pitied her for her shyness, or that he was being patronising. She didn't deserve either of those things. Rather, he hoped to put her at ease, for he knew what it was to unwillingly hide behind a mask of red.

He nodded quietly when the teenaged brunette insisted that he did deserve what she had chosen to give him. That wasn't to say that he necessarily agreed, but he wasn't willing to argue the point - especially when an Immortal had made her opinion known.

"I've been to Rharne," he spoke gently. "Not long ago, in fact. I passed through there on my way to Storm's Edge."

Darius' smile faded slightly at the thought. Siege warfare was much too heavy a topic to discuss with a stranger, so he quickly changed tack.

"I'm from Scalv, but my best friend is from Rharne, actually," he spoke, as if he was correcting himself. "I've never been to Desnind, though, but I understand that's where this comes from, correct?"

Squatting down beside the basket, Darius pointed to the salt buoy that floated in water.

Then he turned to the young woman's final query and the sense of wonder that appeared to accompany it.

"Aye, I sail the seas," he grinned. "In fact, not moments ago, I was a single trial into my journey to Viden."

He stood up once more, and the edges of his mouth teased at his cheeks. He couldn't have avoided the smile if he'd tried.

"Sailing is freedom," he said, glancing over Perdita's shoulder to where the waves crashed upon the beach. "It's the feeling of fresh wind in your hair and the ability to go in whichever direction you so desire...if the winds and currents allow you, of course. Aye, it can be tough, but don't let anyone tell you that it isn't an adventure."

His smile widened at that, lost for a few trills in a memory that he gave no voice to.

When he spoke again, it was not about his experiences as a mariner.

"So, Perdita," he smiled gently once more, "why the move to Scalvoris?"

arius described sailing as freedom and she listened to his words carefully. "Yes, from Desnind," she said of the salt buoy. Her imagination was completely caught up in the description of what sailing must be like. It sounded wonderful and far preferable, Perdita thought, than the flutterbus travel which had brought her and Eli to Desnind.

But then, Darius asked a question and she blushed and smiled. Why the move? That was an interesting question and she did her best to answer. "To study," she said, softly. Her quiet voice continued to show her nerves, but they were easing as she grew more used to speaking with the blond mariner. "Desnind is quiet," she explained and her blush deepened. They hadn't meant to go there, after all - instead they had got drunk together and then decided that the flutterbus would be fun. Perdita's first, and currently last, taste of alcohol. "I make books," she said and that explained part of her gift to him, of course. "I want to learn more, get better." She lifted her shoulders slightly and admitted. "My parents are in Rharne." That was a complicated thing for the young student.

"I love them, very much," she was quick to add. "But I need," and there she paused. What was it she needed? Then, she picked up on the word - one he'd just used, in fact. "Freedom. To pick my own direction, steer my own course." It was a lot of words for the bashful young woman. "To make mistakes," as long as they were her mistakes, she could live with having made them. However, she knew herself well and she knew that there was something else which was important. "And have to deal with them myself."

Lowering her eyes to the ground for a moment, she felt the heat on her cheeks. She probably sounded young and foolish to Darius - she did to herself. She forced herself to lift her gaze back up and asked a question of her own. "Why Viden?" He was travelling there, but why would he? Was it the Academy, she wondered, or maybe something else. "It's cold there," she said, sagely. Perdita hated the cold and whenever possible would avoid it. She loved looking at snow, but only from in front of a warm fire in a warm house cradling a hot mug of tea.

Preferably, of course, also with a book. "I hear the library there is the biggest in the world," she mused. Would that make it worth the cold? Yes, certainly. But hopefully there were other libraries first. "Does Scalvoris have a good library?"

Re: [Saoire Event] Perdita and Darius

Darius nodded when Perdita said she was in Scalvoris Town to study. He had never been the best student, himself, and it reminded him of a conversation he had shared with Yeva and Faith about enrolling with the university. Classrooms were not the most comfortable environment for him. He much preferred the deck of a ship with the wind against his face to a stuffy room, but he wouldn't begrudge anyone who wanted to be taught in a more structured way.

He continued to listen as Perdita expanded on her answer, his dark grey eyes narrowing ever so slightly when she spoke of wanting to be free of her parents' influence. He could understand that desire. Even though his own father had been a sailor, Darius had wanted to learn that skill on his own, and though he had had a few close calls during his first few trips, they had proven to be invaluable.

"I can understand wanting to forge your own path," he spoke kindly.

Darius wasn't sure if the young brunette needed any kind of encouragement or reassurance, but he wagered that it couldn't hurt to provide her with some all the same.

"I'm sure you'll learn a lot," he added, "and it sounds like your parents will be there for you if you need them."

Darius felt empathy for Perdita when the young woman struggled to maintain eye contact. It was the mariner who usually struggled around the opposite sex, and although he wasn't sure if that was quite what was happening for the Rharnian, he still wished he could ease her discomfort.

So when he sensed that she was changing the topic of conversation, he welcomed it...until he heard what she actually said.

"Why Viden?" he echoed, and then he fell silent for a few moments.

He wasn't quite sure what to say. In truth, he was running. Yeva had died, and everything about Scalvoris Town seemed to remind him of his best friend, and he wanted nothing more than to get away. Even in the midst of that pause, as Darius weighed up how to answer Perdita's question, he could feel a lump in his throat as he thought about Yeva's passing.

But he took a few moments, accompanied them with a deep breath or two, and began to formulate a response.

"Aye, it's cold in Viden," he acknowledged. "Sometimes Synnefa Bay freezes over. Ships have to drop anchor away from shore and sailors walk across the ice to reach the city."

That was true. A simple, verifiable fact.

"And I've been there before," he continued, saying something else that was also completely true. "Although it's been a while."

Of course, neither of his responses had actually answered the question. He chuckled ever so quietly, realising that he too had been avoiding eye contact. So he took one last pause before looking Perdita in the eye and started again.

"A dear friend of mine passed away recently," he said in a quiet voice, surprising himself with his own honesty. "And I suppose...I suppose I need freedom from that. I need to get away for a bit and clear my head."

It was a surprising admission, even to himself, and to open up in such a way to a stranger? Darius realised that perhaps Perdita didn't need to hear such things, but he certainly needed to say them.

"She was from Rharne, just like you are," he added with a gently smile, hoping to ease his self-induced tension.

Perdita's next question went a long way to achieving just that.

"Aye, there is a library in Scalv-Town," he replied, feeling relief at the topic change, "though I've only visited it once."

He recalled, then, with some mild humour that could only come from a mixture of time and hindsight, the way in which he had disrupted the other patrons when he had unceremoniously kicked a book across the room. He let out a quiet chuckle at the recollection, and felt the discomfort of talking about Yeva lift off his shoulders.

"If you have any trouble finding your way around Scalv-Town, I'd be happy to help," he added, "but I should probably get back to my ship, lest my crew worry about my absence!"

He smiled gently and let his gaze fall to Perdita's gifts one last time.

"Thank you again for all of this. It's very generous, and I'm sure I'll make use of some of it, even before we reach Viden."

I hadn’t reviewed a Saoire’s Event thread in a while, and I think the last one was Rakvald’s with Gennadiya. Needless to say, this one was quite different. These are warm-hearted and generous characters, heart-warmingly and generously written.
Darius

Injuries/Overstepping: Got hit right in the feels! Give him a minute.
Loot: A basket with handles, a lid, and most importantly, contents.
Some Salt Bouy in water. It is labelled with a hand-written tag which names it and explains what it is.
Some Cani'sliwa seeds. Again, labelled and with a full, carefully written, description.
A small basket (hand made), which has 5 jars of Dakir berries. Labelled fully.
A long basket (hand made) which has a collection of Moukou wood. Labelled fully.
Four hand made (competent) books. Each one is a different design. The first three have the following contents (competent writing, competent art ):
One is an illustrated book on woodworking techniques and known woods and their properties from around the world. It's an amalgamation of 3 such books found in Desnind library.
One is an illustrated book on sea legends and traditions among seafarers around the world. It's an amalgamation of 5 such books found in Desnind library.
One is an illustrated book on healthy cooking. It's an amalgamation of 4 such books found in Desnind library.
The fourth book is blank, except for the inside front cover, which reads. "May every journey be an adventure and the wind forever be in your sails."
Knowledge:

Discipline: Holding it together in the face of raw emotion.
Etiquette: Receiving gifts with grace and gratitude.
Etiquette: Reiterating your gratitude is not a bad thing.
Psychology: Understanding your own thoughts and where they come from.
Psychology: Recognising when you're not being completely honest with yourself.
Seafaring: Feeling an unnatural change beneath the hull.
Socialisation: Be thoughtful about how much you tell a stranger.
Socialisation: Finding common ground with a stranger.

Darius had a lot going on here. I forgot that this was after Yeva had died and before she came back. So it is understandable that he would be emotional. And his description of how sailing is freedom struck a cord, with me as it seemingly did with Perdita. I can see these two becoming friends!

What thoughtful gifts! You made Darius cry! This thread was written at an interesting point in Perdita’s life, too. Flutterbused to Desnind on a drunken whim?! For somebody as shy as Perdita is, she can be pretty brave and spontaneous. And I liked how she cast her longing for her freedom in sailing metaphors. That could have backfired, but Darius is a good sort.
