[Saoire Event] Faith and Ari'sora

Image
25th Trial of Zi'da in Arc 720

"It's time," Saoire said, looking at the small individual with her. They had been preparing for this for a long time - earlier, Saoire had been with them all, the group of her closest, and they had put together the final preparations. The night before, in her workshop, Saoire had told them how tonight they would travel all across Idalos bringing small gifts and good cheer. Children throughout the land had awoken this morning to find trinkets and tchotchkes, gifts given which brought smiles to young faces.

That had been last night. This trial, though, they were bringing together people who Saoire had selected. Individuals who were prepared to give to another - who had taken her prompting, in dreams and visions, and had moved forward - acted - to prepare a gift. And, for the first time, her children would be there when the gifts were exchanged. It was a privilege, and they all knew it. To be there, to witness the giving of a gift by a kind soul.

This was one such soul.

The magic which Saoire wove was more complex, more nuanced than many could understand. Indeed, it would seem that perhaps she had roped Ralaith in to this event - or maybe this was part of her own purview. It wasn't clear, but what was obvious was that these events took place in the literal blink of an eye. Faith was going about their daily business, as was Ari'sora when they heard the gentle tinkling of a bell. As their ears heard the sound, not yet sure whether it was indeed a bell or in fact the tinkling laughter of a sprite or fairy, they were suddenly somewhere else.

Faith and Ari'sora found themselves standing in a circle of stones, all of which engraved with beautiful animals dancing and singing. Standing with them was a woman, wearing a beautiful crown of pine cones, glitter, and many small and intricate baubles. She wore pink and silver, her gown laced with the finest materials and covered with glitter and even her hair shimmered with glitter. She smiled at the two of them.

"I bid you welcome!" They knew who she was, somehow, even before she spoke the next words, "I am Saoire, and this is my very dear friend.". She gestured to a Dormouse at the height of three and a half feet, with a grin as vibrant as his hazel eyes, who stepped out from behind Saoire.

"Hello, friends! Sorla, reporting for duty, happy to be here", said the small individual. Looking around with wide eyes, the small bipedal Dormouse considered that they wanted to try dancing and singing with other races one day. All in due time.

"We are here," Saoire said, her voice gentle and bubbling with mirth and joy, "Because Faith has a gift for you Ari'sora". She gestured around, as though the gift was nearby. Which, Faith would see, it was. "I will leave you, now, to give your gift, but Sorla will stay with you, and when you are ready to go back to your lives, will facilitate that."

And, with the sound of gentle music in the distance, Saoire was gone. The small creature with them smiled.

Re: [Saoire Event] Faith and Ari'sora

Except, it wasn't Faith. It was a woman with honey-blonde hair and bright blue eyes. She was probably mid-thirties, but might be older and just well made-up, as her make up was very (very )carefully applied. She looked at Ari'sora with an intense expression and then a smile lit up her face. "Oh, look at you, you're Ari'sora, yes?" She didn't actually wait for an answer, instead she carried on speaking. "It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Katie, and I'm Faith's...." She didn't like to refer to herself as a grandmother, but Famula was Faith's actual mother in law, so Katie said. "I'm Padraig's step mother, so little Faith's step-mother-in-law, I suppose. Our Paddy and Faith are my Cyrus' two eyes, they are, he's such a dear man," she said and she lowered herself down so she was sitting on her heels, looking at Ari'sora carefully.

"I'm sorry, beautiful child, but Katie had to come instead of Faith because Faith is injured." Katie nodded her head. "She'll be fine, Katie promises you beautiful child," and she patted Ari'sora's arm. It seemed that referring to herself in the third person was a fairly normal thing for her. "You're not to worry, and Katie will ask Faith to write to you just as soon as she's able to. But, this is important, because it's Saoire's time and that means it's important." Katie nodded. Looking around at the circle of stones around them, she smiled and sat down. "It's so lovely to meet you - both of you!" She wouldn't let Sorla feel left out - even if....... "well, you're the smallest and cutest little thing Katie ever saw!" She said to the Dormouse who somehow managed to blush.

"Faith was... oh, I don't know, helping someone, somewhere, doing something heroic," Katie managed to sound proud and disapproving all at once. "She's been unconscious. But the doctors tell us that she's improving each trial. And you know how she is, she writes everything down." Faith did - always had - and it was a habit she hadn't stopped, even since she had been marked by Vri. "So, that means that she's written down all I need to know to come here and give you her gift to you."

Katie smiled kindly at Ari'sora, well aware that this was an unusual situation. "But before I do, do you have any questions for Katie?"

Ari'sora had just gotten back from...wherever she had just been. There was a field of flowers where she had met Saoire, and a weird looking man so that she could give him the wine that she had bought for him. Now that she was back home, she wanted to think about what Ryl'ryn and Mi'zuri had told her. Discipline was about control. That much was clear to her now. But...control of what, exactly? That was what Ari'sora wanted to think about. As she thought, a memory came to mind; that of Rin'saia reaching for a treat that she had just told her daughter that she couldn't have because it was too close to dinner. Ari'sora hadn't wanted her to spoil her appetite for dinner, but from Rin'saia's perspective, she was being denied something that she wanted. The little girl had tried to reach for the treat anyway, and when Ari'sora had stopped her, she had thrown a fit.

Was discipline a means of denying yourself something that you wanted? No...that didn't seem right. As she continued to think about it, she realized that it was about controlling the urge to take the thing that you wanted but had been denied. Children...especially young children didn't understand that. Not unless they were forced to learn it at a very young age the way she had been. Mi'zuri certainly had not known discipline as a child. So discipline had to be something that you must learn as you grow and gain experience.

So. Discipline could be used to control urges. And from Ryl'ryn's examples of slaves, it could drive you...or perhaps allow you to ignore basic needs in order to do something. For a while, at least. Her friend's example of slaves lashing out struck a cord with her. If discipline could stop someone from acting on their anger...could it help someone to stop feeling anger at all? Control of one's emotions was another form of control, after all. And if it could help one to stop feeling an emotion that was harming them...well, that would be a very good thing indeed. Ari'sora remembered when her anger at ChiChi had caused very real injuries to herself as her own emotions had cut into her flesh. Could discipline help her to prevent that in the future? It was certainly worth trying.

That begged the question of how someone went about becoming more disciplined. If you wanted to learn a new language, you studied it. And if you wanted to learn how to use a weapon, you found a teacher who was willing to teach you how to use it. Then you practiced what you learned...endlessly. Could you learn discipline the same way that you learned how to speak a new language, or how to use a weapon? But how? If discipline was about control, maybe you could practice it by tempting yourself with something that you loved, and then denying yourself whatever it was? That too was worth thinking about. Perhaps she should ask Ryl'ryn what she thought about it.

Ari'sora was about to go and do just that when the soft tinkling of a bell made her freeze. The last time she had heard that sound, she had ended up in a field filled with flowers so that she could give someone a gift. But...she didn't have any more gifts to give anyone.

The next thing she knew, Ari'sora was standing in a circle of stones with another woman; one that she didn't recognize. Each of the stones were engraved with beautiful animals that were dancing and singing. Ari'sora admired them for a few trills before she turned to see what the stranger wanted. Suddenly Saoire was there too, and she had what looked like a bipedal Dormouse with her. The dormouse was introduced as Saoire's dear friend, and Ari'sora greeted her politely. Then Saoire explained that the woman was here to give Ari'sora a gift. Ari'sora wasn't quite sure what to think of that. She loved the idea of getting a gift. The entire concept of giving presents to others and getting them in return was still new to her. At the same time, she wasn't sure that she deserved one. She hadn't done anything deserving of getting a gift, and she couldn't imagine why some stranger wanted to give her one.

Then the woman spoke. Ari'sora's previous thoughts flew out of her head as she tried to make sense of what the woman was saying. The woman was the step mother of someone named Padraig...which made her Faith's mother in law, and her name was Katie. Ari'sora knew who Faith was...she had met the other woman once before. But she had no idea who Padraig was, or why his step mother would come here to give her a gift.

When the woman touched her arm, Ari'sora jumped a little, her eyes wide. It took an act of will on her part not to pull back, and she wondered if that was also part of what discipline was. She wasn't used to being touched by strangers...or at all, really. Not without that touch to be part of a punishment for something she had done wrong. Ari'sora's eyes stayed on the woman's hand as long as it was touching her, but the woman's words quickly distracted her from wondering what she had done wrong and what her punishment was to be.

Faith had been injured? She had been helping someone, and she was somehow unconscious because of it? Was she really okay? Ari'sora desperately wanted to know, but she didn't ask. Katie had just said she would be, after all, and she didn't want to anger the woman, or hurt her feelings by questioning her. When the woman asked if she had any questions, she nodded.

"Is there anything I can do to help?" she asked softly.

Ari'sora couldn't imagine that there was anything that she could do, but Faith had done so much for her. Paying for one season of her education at the University, offering her a job in Rharne...which she still needed to think about once things had settled down in Scalvoris, and creating Beacon for people like her who needed it so much...Ari'sora owed Faith so much even if Faith had spoken of paying it forward instead. Ari'sora hadn't been able to do that yet either. So if there was something...anything...she could do to help Faith, then she wanted to do it.

"Faith has done so much for me...I want to help her if I can."

Was there anything that she could do to help? Katie smiled at the timid little thing in front of her and she shook her head. "Faith speaks very highly of you," she said. "I promise you, she's in the best hands. Padraig - her husband," Katie had seen the look of confusion on Ari'sora's face when she used Padraig's name, so she explained. "Padraig has the best healers and they have all agreed." Katie smiled kindly. "So, no, there's nothing any of us can do except wait and give her time to heal."

Katie was full of opinions about that, but she did not share them here. The fact that Ari'sora didn't know who Padraig was meant that Faith had not shared information about herself with the young woman. That was not unusual for Faith, but what Katie did not know was why Faith had not shared that most basic of information. Maybe it had never come up, maybe the conversation had been solely about Ari'sora - Katie knew that Faith was good at directing people away from topics she didn't want to discuss. But maybe it was something else and, just in case, Katie said no more.

"Anyhow, little doll, this is from Faith," she said. That said, Katie pulled a piece of parchment from her pocket. Rather than hand it over, though, she unfolded it and began to read.

"Saoire has given me the opportunity to give a gift to Ari'sora. It is in two parts.

1. In Beacon, there is a new Community Centre. There is a library there which is to be named 'Ari'sora's Library'. It is a public place where people will be able to access knowledge and it will be in a place named for her.

2. I once invited her to work in Rharne, but Beacon and Scalvoris are her home. Therefore, I have written a letter to the Trainer on the Scalvoris Council, and strongly recommended Ari'sora be given the opportunity to set up an education system for the children of Beacon. This would mean an office in the Community Centre, and an assistant to help her. It will be a small task, at first, as Beacon's population is still relatively small. But with that experience - if she wishes it - I am sure she will provide excellent care and learn much herself.

Should I be unable to deliver this myself," Katie continued to read but her voice shook slightly. "Then I hope that these two gifts provide Ari'sora with much pleasure and I would ask that whoever gives them to her sends her my fondest regards." Katie smiled and lifted her eyes from the parchment. "I hope you like these?"

She thought that the young woman probably would.

Ari'sora wasn't sure what to think when Katie told her that Faith spoke highly of her. She had great difficulty believing that. Why would Faith speak highly of her? Why would anyone ever speak highly of her? She had done nothing to deserve that. Nothing to merit any kind of praise at all. So why...? Unless...was Katie lying to her? But why would she do that? It just didn't make any sense at all, so rather than responding, she chose to focus on the news that Faith was in good hands, and that all anyone could do was wait. She nodded. In all likely hood, she wouldn't have been able to do anything to help Faith even if there had been something that could be done. Looking at it that way, it was pretty arrogant of her to even ask what she had. Fortunately, Katie didn't seem to mind.

Ari'sora eyed the parchment that Katie took out of her pocked curiously when the other woman told her it was for her. Instead of giving it to her, Katie began to read from the parchment, and Ari'sora's eyes widened in wonder when she heard what the parchment contained. She was happy to hear that there was a new Community Center in Beacon, but that news was completely eclipsed by what came next. A library...named after her? That was...that was amazing. Libraries were filled with books. And books were friends. Books were teachers. Books could be counted on when people could not be. How had Faith known that that would mean more to her than just about anything else?

But Katie continued to read, and Ari'sora's eyes widened even further as she heard the rest. The chance to set up an education system for the children of Beacon? An office in the Community Centre, and an assistant to help her do just that? That was...Ari'sora had no words to describe how happy that made her.

The part about Faith asking someone to send Ari'sora her fondest regards confused her. She had done nothing to deserve Faith thinking fondly of her. But when asked if she liked the gifts, the answer was a definite yes.

"I love them, Katie. I love them very much. I can't really describe how much they mean to me...and I have no idea how she knew how important something like this would be to me. We don't know each other very well. I've only met her once, and we've exchanged a few letters. Faith is truly an amazing woman. Thank you for coming here in her place. And please tell her thank you for me when she wakes up. This means so much to me. Please tell her that. And if there is ever anything that I can do for her when she wakes up, please let her know that she only needs to ask. I owe her so much...for so many things. If there is ever anything I can do for her in return, then I want to do it."

Comments: Having Katie show up and accept the gifts instead of Faith was a great way of handling Faith's coma. Katie seems as if she can be a bit overwhelming at times, but she also seems to be a genuinely nice person and really care about her family.

And Faith's gift for Ari was wonderful!

That being said, I wonder what caused Ari to think about discipline at length and if there was a particular event. I liked that you used examples from Ari's daily life to explain what discipline is or could be.

Learning to be disciplined by tempting yourself and then denying yourself sounds like an interesting approach. I wonder if it works if you do it on purpose ...

I wonder what caused Ari to have doubts when Katie told her that Faith spoke highly of her, and I like that you described her reaction to finding out what the gift was in so much detail.

Her happiness was almost tangible!

That being said, you requested 7 knowledges. While this thread was a complete little story and thus worth full rewards in spite of your only making two posts in my opinion, I can't really see where you earned 7 Discipline knowledges.

Ari definitely used Discipline when Katie touched her and you described how it took an act of will for her not to pull back, but the rest of the thread was just about her thinking about discipline rather than actually being disciplined in my opinion.

For that reason, I have decided to only award you 1 Discipline knowledge. Feel free to suggest replacement knowledges for the rest, and if you think that I overlooked something, let me know as well!

Enjoy your gift and let me know if you have any questions, please!
