[Saoire Event] Elisabeth and Azrael

Image
25th Trial of Zi'da in Arc 720

"It's time," Saoire said, looking at the small individual with her. They had been preparing for this for a long time - earlier, Saoire had been with them all, the group of her closest, and they had put together the final preparations. The night before, in her workshop, Saoire had told them how tonight they would travel all across Idalos bringing small gifts and good cheer. Children throughout the land had awoken this morning to find trinkets and tchotchkes, gifts given which brought smiles to young faces.

That had been last night. This trial, though, they were bringing together people who Saoire had selected. Individuals who were prepared to give to another - who had taken her prompting, in dreams and visions, and had moved forward - acted - to prepare a gift. And, for the first time, her children would be there when the gifts were exchanged. It was a privilege, and they all knew it. To be there, to witness the giving of a gift by a kind soul.

This was one such soul.

The magic which Saoire wove was more complex, more nuanced than many could understand. Indeed, it would seem that perhaps she had roped Ralaith in to this event - or maybe this was part of her own purview. It wasn't clear, but what was obvious was that these events took place in the literal blink of an eye. Elisabeth was going about their daily business, as was Azrael when they heard the gentle tinkling of a bell. As their ears heard the sound, not yet sure whether it was indeed a bell or in fact the tinkling laughter of a sprite or fairy, they were suddenly somewhere else.

Elisabeth and Azrael found themselves standing on top of a beautiful, snowy mountain with clouds and sun shining down onto them. Standing with them was a woman, wearing a beautiful crown of pine cones, glitter, and many small and intricate baubles. She wore a yellow and silver skirt, with a similarly decorated blouse and a cloak to match, and even her hair shimmered with glitter. She smiled at the two of them.

"I bid you welcome!" They knew who she was, somehow, even before she spoke the next words, "I am Saoire, and this is my very dear friend.". She gestured to a bipedal black cat with ocean blue eyes and a clearly-shy demeanor, who stepped out from behind Saoire.

"Oh my...I'm sorry, I'm so excited! I, uh...my name is Halvur", said the small individual. Looking around with wide eyes, the small bipedal cat considered how much he was looking forward to being part of the world he had yet to see.

"We are here," Saoire said, her voice gentle and bubbling with mirth and joy, "Because Elisabeth has a gift for you Azrael". She gestured around, as though the gift was nearby. Which, Elisabeth would see, it was. "I will leave you, now, to give your gift, but Halvur will stay with you, and when you are ready to go back to your lives, will facilitate that."

And, with the sound of an excited purr from Halvur, Saoire was gone. The small creature with them smiled.

It had been another long trial at the Institute. Stretching her neck a bit, Elisabeth sighed softly, leaning back in her chair. The holiday season was approaching, and the students were excited. That meant a lot of reminding and settling of nerves and that was exhausting.

Closing the door to the classroom, she stopped by Vin’s office for a trill to gather her things before departing for the night. Vin and Rilith were off on one of their adventures so the house would be empty…again. Not that she minded. She was due back in Storm’s Edge within a few trials so the time alone was well spent. The fortress was bustling with activity and full of people all the time – so very different from life in Rharne. It was good that she had the chance to collect her mind and focus every now and then, but truth be told, she missed the place when she wasn’t there.

She missed something else too. Or someone, that was...but he, well, she never quite knew where he was or what he was up to. That was part of the fun of their relationship.

Stepping out into the bracing cold, she wrapped her coat tightly around her form. Having lived in Viden her whole life, the cold really didn’t bother her. In fact, it had an invigorating effect on the young woman. Elisabeth loved the feel of it against her skin, driving any temporary melancholy away.

Halfway to her home, she heard something…odd. A bell? A laugh? What was it?

It didn’t take long for her to figure it out.

Suddenly, the street of Rharne were replaced by a beautiful snowy mountain. Casting her gaze around, disoriented for a moment or two, the mystery was solved by the words of the Saoire. Well, this was a first!

But Elisabeth wasn’t alone. There was someone there with her that she had never met before but the gift she had would be for him. It was the time of year for giving and for the first time in her life, she had people in her life that she was grateful for (beyond Vin and Rilith) and in celebrating those connections, she had a gift for a stranger.

25 Zi'da 720 | Azrael Blackfire | A Snowy Mountain
The mortalborn of desire was having a night in when he was abducted the second time in one trial. It was his turn to watch Thorn while Talissa went out on patrol with her father. Azrael still didn't like her father. The man had insisted upon teaching Azrael Attunement and the magic, like all magics, had done little to nothing for the son of Edasha. It had certainly done less for him than Syroa's mark had. He was sitting in front of a small mirror, looking at himself while Thorn waddled around somewhere behind him with a bowl of seeds that someone had assured Azrael the child could eat. He was hardly father material, but Azrael had kept the child alive so far. It helped that Ithecal's aged differently. The child was smarter than he often acted...

So Azrael let the child wander around the room with his bowl of seeds while Azrael stared at himself in the mirror. He had dark hair, a dark beard, relatively smooth but matte skin. There was a roughness in his voice and yet he always spoke with a certain... welcoming tone. It was his face, but it was only one face he could wear. He remembered a time in Yaralon where he had tried to wear another face to lead a small raiding party. Hm... it had been him and a bard. Hardly a raid. His hand slowly scratched at the beard on the side of his face and he thought about the hundreds of different changes he could make. The only problem was that he already found himself quite attractive.

He pinched his nose and his eyes began to glow a fiery orange. His nose shrunk just the smallest amount, not changing shape in any way but... shrinking a little. His hand came around to run through his hair and he thought about changing it as well. The glow in his eyes continued to burn and his hair grew a little shorter on the sides and back while growing a little longer on the top. He brushed it back out of his face with his hand and kept looking at himself in the mirror while he thought about what else he could change. Could he darken his skin tone a little? He felt like he'd grown incredibly pale in Melrath but he hadn't really. More pale, sure, but nothing like the snow. He didn't notice the bells while he was thinking of his appearance.

He thought about his hair- not the length. He'd already changed the length. He thought about the color and the texture. Could he make his hair softer? Could he- and then he was on a mountain covered in snow. The beautiful view distracted him for only a few moments before he realized he was no longer in his room. He turned in a panic, reaching for his sword at his hip only to find it missing. Shit. He didn't wear the sword when the kid was around. The kid. What would he get up to while Azrael was here? The treasure hunter grimaced and looked around for anything. All and all finding two women and a talking cat was not the worst thing in the world.

Saoire introduced everyone. Elisabeth, the cat, and Azrael. However the mortalborn couldn't help but stare a little at the cat's bright blue eyes. Eye color! He hadn't even thought about changing his eye color! How would he look with eyes that blue? He wanted to know but knew that now was not the time so he kept his attention on the abductor who was speaking. He could help but think that Saoire was attractive in her own way. The crown was certainly an interesting choice but it worked for her. The woman who had a gift for him was attractive in her own way as well but Azrael found himself caught up on her name.

Elisabeth. It was a good name. It had a nice sound to it. However it was long. Talissa was a long name, but it could be shortened into Tali. What could Elisabeth be shortened into? Lisa? No. Beth? Not as bad but not good. El? Well that one wasn't the worst. Then again who was he to judge? His name was Azrael. After a few trills of silence, Azrael said, "Well I'm glad to have been taken somewhere with such a nice view when I was abducted." He turned and gestured out at the snow. "It's nice. Much better than a dungeon." Azrael shrugged, his mind wandering back to Thorn alone in a Melrath inn. Tali was going to be angry. But neither of them were here now so he had to make the best of it. "So what's this I hear about a gift?"

Well, her companion was something else. That was the first thought that went through her mind. The second thought was more of an acknowledgment of his attitude. This one is good-looking, and he knows it. Attractiveness was nice in her book, but such things rarely matter in the grand scheme of life. There were other things that were more attractive…

The holiday wasn’t what she thought it would be. Things were happening in Rharne – serious things. All the people she cared for were taking care of their business and time for celebrating was limited. So instead of being with them, Saoire had chosen this person to be with whom she would celebrate. Maybe there was a reason.

Nodding, acknowledging the beautiful scenery before them, she spoke to him for the first time. “Azrael, a pleasure. My name is Elisabeth, as you know. I confess I was confused as to why I was drawn to buying such a gift, but it makes perfect sense now…” Walking over to a nearby snowdrift, she kneeled down and picked up a small bright red box with a bow. Bringing it back over, Elisabeth handed it off to the man with a smile. “For you. I hope you like it.”

It was always hard to know what to buy a stranger but for Elisabeth, it had been especially hard as gift-giving wasn’t something she was used to. Collecting ‘things’ wasn’t a trait she had ever been drawn to and as such, she didn’t have much. But since arriving in Rharne and making connections, she had begun collecting a small stash of items that meant something to her. Mementos here and there, to remind her of people or events that could never be taken away.

The mortalborn seemed excited to open the small package Elisabeth handed over to him. He carefully opened the box, unfortunately destroying the bow he'd have kept for some comical purpose. Bows looked nice on things. He opened the box and his eyes widened slightly. He reached in and slowly pulled the gift from the box before lowering the box onto the snow and keeping the gift in his hand. A flask. A weighty flask. He didn't immediately recognize the metal and opened the flask, thinking it had something inside to cause the weight but when he realized it was empty he seemed surprise.

Azrael turned the flask over in his hands for a few trills, his fingers tracing over the leather and the symbols written on it. What dream made her think he would want something like that? Honestly? He wanted to know what she had seen that made her think a flask was a proper gift for him. Perhaps some context would have helped. Did she think he was an alcoholic? How did she have him pegged so accurately from a single dream? He loved the flask he was holding in his hands. He could feel the weight of the embersteel in his hand which he seemed amused by after passing it from hand to hand a few times. He could probably use it as a makeshift bludgeon if he needed to but he was mostly excited to think about the beverages he could store inside it... and it was the perfect size to hide it from the kid.

"This is... perfect. Thank you, Elisabeth." Yes... her name was certainly a long one but in light of the gift he didn't mind it that much. Elisabeth, the woman who'd given him a wonderful flask. "Where are you from? I'd like to get to know the woman who knew enough about me to know I'd want this."

Re: [Saoire Event] Elisabeth and Azrael

Elisabeth had to admit – she was nervous. She wasn’t good at gift-giving and even though hints had been whispered to her, there was a minuscule iota of doubt…until she saw his face. Relief swept over her as he expressed his appreciation. Smiling back, she inclined her head gently and replied. “You are very welcome, Azrael. It was my pleasure.”

What she didn’t expect, however, was him to inquire further about her.

Looking around, she noted a large flat rock not too far away from their position. Pointing at it, Elisabeth smiled. “How about we sit, and I’ll tell you? I wouldn’t mind staying here for a while. The view from up here is priceless.” Leading him over to the rock, she spoke softly. “First off, Elisa, if you prefer. Or Elisabeth. I like both.” She always told people that, but it really wasn’t true – she preferred Elisabeth, even if it was a mouthful. “I currently live in Rharne but I haven’t been there very long. Well, Rharne and Storm’s Edge – I go back and forth. I lived in Viden most of my life. I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be in Rharne but it’s home for right now. What about you, Azrael?”

Maybe she hadn’t been before, when they found themselves on the snowy mountaintop, but Elisabeth now found herself curious about the man with her. Was he from Rharne too? She guessed not, but one could never be too sure. What did he do? So many questions but that was kind of her thing – questions. It was then she realized that for once, she hadn’t been the first one to ask a question!

Hmmm…perhaps Azrael was more like her than she gave him credit for. Only one way to find out.

When Elisabeth gestured to the stone and suggested they sit for a while and talk, Azrael thought about the child back in Melrath without him. He worried for a moment before casting the worry aside. The kid was smarter than Azrael gave him credit for. Azrael could sit and talk with the woman who'd given him this gift for just a little bit. He wanted to. So he did. Elisabeth lead him over to the rock and Azrael gestured to Halvur, beckoning for the new creature to come with them. "Come Halvur, I want to know about you as well." Azrael called when the bipedal cat lingered a little too far behind them. Halvur nodded and rushed along to keep up with them. When they reached the stone, Azrael gestured for Elisabeth to take a seat first so she could get comfortable. He loved the view but light and dark were inverted for his eyes. What she saw clearly, he saw with a white haze like an inverted darkness obscuring the distance. Halvur sat beside Elisabeth and watched her with wide eyes while she spoke, probably thinking of all the places she mentioned and wanting passionately to see them.

"What about El?" Azrael asked Elisabeth when she offered shortened versions of her name. It wasn't that Elisa didn't work but if she approved of El he'd use it instead. Shorter and more to the point. Whether or not she approved of it, he'd move on with the name she had given him to use.

"Rharne? I've been to Rharne! I was there for the Buskerfest, I had a wonderful time." Azrael said with excitement in his voice. He had enjoyed his brief stay in Rharne and the people he met. He remembered the redhead with the curly hair- what was her name? Yeda? No. Yuda? No... He'd gotten into a risky situation for her and couldn't recall her name. Hm... Yeva! That was it! Ah, good times. Rharne was nice. "I've never been to Viden though... I think. I travel a lot. Yaralon and Melrath most recently. Well I was actually in Melrath before... this." He gestured around at their surroundings, still holding his new flask in his hand. "It's an interesting land. I've learned more about myself there than I ever imagined I would." When he'd gone to Melrath he thought he'd been human, but now he knew he was something more. The spirits had shown him that.

Smiling as he and Halvur followed her, the young woman accepted his offer to sit first, laughing a bit as his offered nickname for her. “El is fine. I don’t think anyone has ever called me that…but I’m happy to let that be your name for me, Azrael.” Grinning at the cat sitting next to her, she listened as the man stated that he had been Rharne but most likely not Viden. “I missed Buskerfest. I didn’t arrive in Rharne until the turn of cycles, right before Vhalar. Rharnians don’t seem to need much of a reason to drink though. That’s been one of my main observations.”

Giving him a mischievous smile, she turned her attention to Viden. “I like snow and cold temperatures. Viden has plenty of both it’s one of my favorite places. I’m not much for hot weather. If you ever decide to go there, I’d be happy to show you around.” Of course, he’d have to find her, wherever she might be, first…and with all the traveling she assumed herself and Balthazar would be doing, that could potentially be a bit tricky.

“Melrath? I’ve heard a lot of interesting things about that place. I would love to visit sometrial. I haven’t really traveled much in my life but I’m beginning to think that I’ll be doing a fair amount of it in the near future – at least after all the stuff in Rharne wraps up with the flameborn and the Rift.” Elisabeth hadn’t intended on going into the topic but her mind was in a mode where she began was processing things externally, so Azrael got a bit more information than he probably wanted. “What kind of things did you find out? You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to. I promise – I won’t be offended.” Offering up a smile to him, she let her eyes flit out to the view again, surprisingly enjoying their conversation.

He looked like he could take care of himself in a fight, but curiosity got the best of her. “Are you into weapons? I have a longsword I’ve been training with, as well as a bit of unarmed combat but I’m always interested in hearing about other things.”

"No, no they do not." Azrael agreed with a grin when Elisabeth said that the people of Rharne did not need many reasons to drink. He enjoyed that they gave so willfully into their desires. They wanted to feel good and had no shame in it. Their Immortal Patron was a good one. When she offered to show him around Viden, Azrael gave her a small grin and a nod but he didn't say anything. She may have liked snow and cold but snow was irritating to eyes that saw better in the dark. It was fun on occasion but snow, cold, and a lot of people reading books didn't seem like Azrael's idea of a good time. He'd go back to Rharne before he went Viden... or Yaralon... but probably not Yaralon. He wanted to go somewhere new, once he got to the bottom of all the spirit business going on in Melrath. When Elisabeth said she'd heard a lot of interesting things about Melrath, Azrael's grin widened.

"Most of them are probably true based on some of the thing's I've seen while I was there." Azrael commented before moving onto the question Elisabeth had asked him about what the spirits had shown him. He knew he wasn't allowed to mention certain things but surely he could say he was the son of... no... maybe it was better not to rest on the reputation of his mother. It was Syroa who made him appealing to so many... then again his mother had given him a far greater gift. "I'd love to tell you but I promised another that I would keep it a secret." Azrael said, dismissing the issue and moving onto the other question Elisabeth had asked him about weapons. He did like weapons but he didn't consider it a passion. He was good with a blade and good with a bow. "I have a few, yeah. A short sword and a bow. Longswords are nice but when you have to fight in a small room you don't have a lot of space to swing all that steel."

Elisabeth grinned back when Azrael agreed with her about the Rharians’ inclinations for drinking. She hadn’t minded it so much. In fact, she recalled several nights of drinking with her favorite person in Idalos that she wouldn’t have traded for anything…

Melrath seemed to be topic he enjoyed. Well, at least if his reaction was to be believed, so the young woman lingered there for a moment. Laughing softly, she nodded. “I would imagine you’ve seen a lot, based on what I’ve heard.” He seemed to hesitate in answering the rest of her query but just when she had decided to move on, he told her that he had made a promise. Shrugging her shoulders gently, the raven-haired young woman smiled. “A promise is a promise. I won’t press further…”

As they progressed to discussing weapons, she listened to his words. Short sword and bow. “I’ve always wanted to learn how to shoot a bow but haven’t had the chance yet. I have a longsword, although what you say is true. I supposed it’s a bit easier for someone my size – we don’t take up much space in that small room you speak of.” Grinning at him, she let her sapphire eyes gaze out upon the scenery, looking for something to ask him next. Small talk was not her arena. There was something…impersonal about it. Not that she wanted to know everything about everyone but sometimes it was nice to just feel like one was connecting with people on more than just a ‘Hi, how are you?’ level.

“So, Azrael…if I may ask, what are you passionate about? You don’t have to tell me, of course, but me…I love mysteries. Figuring things out. Sometimes even people, seeing what makes them who they are.”
Turning to regard him with a smile. “And you? What sorts of things can you not get enough of?”
