[Zuudaria] A Meeting Among Tombstones

Image

8 Ymiden 719

She hated this place. The ghosts that floated about in their veils was unsettling. The gravestones of the dead, both present and future, were ominous and sinister to pass. Even the mausoleum, as well maintained by the spirits as it was, radiated a quietness that one could only associate with the coming of death rather than the arrival of eternal peace. As soon as she arrived she was reminded just how unsettling Famula's domain was. If she had it her way, she'd been off on her own still. Drunk, probably high too, but away from the soldiers' camps where she could marinate in her own anger. Faith had called though. So here she was.

Maxine had planted herself on an old stone bench in the middle of the graveyard. Her leg bounced, the itching of the need for a fix starting to manifest while she waited. Alcohol from her binging the night before still lingered in her veins. Like the trials before, the ex-convict had woken up drunk. In a few breaks she'd probably be rewarded for her antics with a raging headache until she indulged in more hair-of-the-dog.

Despite her intoxication as of late, she had noticed some things. The camp and the house had become busier. More ranking soldiers and familiar faces darted in and out of the residence with more frequency. Whispers carried a tone of urgency and concern. Soldiers began to train more noticeably in the yard. Something had happened. Some news had come in. Maxine didn't know what it was, nor did she make haste in asking. She merely traded in her empty bottle and lit a joint. Something told her she wouldn't remain in the dark of ignorance long. That unknown news was likely the reason she was called to meet here.

The waiting game had been excruciating. Every fiber in her body called for action, always action. Maxine was not a woman made to exercise restraint and bide her time. Qit'ria was dead. An army led by a Necromancer and her coven had her surviving friends in cross-hairs. Every instinct bid Max to find Ellasin first regardless of how blind she was in this hunt. Find her, tear her asunder, and return to Scalvoris to live out her trials throwing an unending party in the Red Hand. That had been the plan. Instead, without direction or focus, she'd spiraled. Her mind was consumed by her innate desire for revenge. It had to be fed.

"There's a lot of headstones here," Maxine remarked when she finally heard tell-tale foot steps. Her brown eyes looked over the graves that surrounded the bench in every which direction. "Must be a comfort, knowing where you'll go. Afterward." Her expression hardened. "Or an anxiety. Wondering how soon your sacred meeting place will become your final home." She leaned back against the stone support of the bench and tilted her head to instead watch Faith's arrival. "I'm here. What do you have for me?"

It was growing on her, this place.

At first, she'd been overwhelmed, then amazed. Then, Famula had casually uttered the words "war general" and Faith had descended into a state of utter panic. Not that she showed anyone that, of course, but she had. And now, she came here and felt the grass between her toes. It was a simple pleasure, but it felt like home. More and more, it felt like home. Not surprising, she considered. She'd spent a lot of time here since they'd first seen the wall bleed and had entered here. It was her mother-in-law's realm, Padraig being Famula's son, and it was the Domain of the Immortal Faith had worshipped from her first word.

She stepped down the path and saw Max, sitting and waiting. The woman was coiled like a spring. Faith smiled slightly at the place Max had chosen. "Headstones? Yes, there are." But the next word from the former Slag's Deep resident caused a smile of mirth to flit across Faith's face. "Right there, that's mine," she said, gesturing to an area just off to the left. Beneath a tree, two plots side by side. "And that's Padraig's. Apparently," she said with a slight smile. "We've been together in all the lifetimes. It's a soul thing, ironically." Peeking over Faith's shoulder was a small ... bunny. An animated chalk-drawn outline of a bunny, to be precise. It grinned at Max as it peered at her.

"Yeah, they're all smooshed up. Wanna sick bag?"

Faith rolled her eyes slightly. "This is PB. He's ... well, last time you saw him he was being all black wings of doom." The bunny in question waved with a rather lecherous wink to Maxine. "I was. I'm good at that. Spoopy. Death bunny, see. The PB stands for Perfect Bunny. Or. Perfect Buns. Or.. somethin'."

Faith shook her head and promptly ignored the chalk bunny. "Death never bothered me, honestly." It was true. "Although, these days, I worry about my family. But I suppose it just... is what it is? Inevitable. I'll just do my best to avoid it as long as I can, this time around." She smiled, although it was rather mirthless. Pale silver eyes regarded Max and Faith breathed in, before sitting down to speak.

"There's someone in Scalvoris. Here. This is the intel we've received." She showed Max that words.

Ymiden 8th, 719

F,

I have not yet found a name, but I know the Coven has acquired a powerful ally in Scalvoris, one with vast resources and a network. My best agent there was captured and killed, but she managed to get information to me with her dying breath. The Scalvoris Council is a target. A big target.

C.

Pale eyes which were so blue they were almost silver regarded Max. "I've got the usual, the predictable things happening too, but I think that, if I'm honest, when it comes to you, you're a wildcard and we need those." She smiled slightly, although there was no mirth. "So, I want to know if there's anything you can do to gather intelligence, find out who and what is messing with Scalvoris. And why. I want to know what the plan is and then make it not work. So, I thought I'd start by talking to you in a graveyard." Serious though she was, a sparkle of amusement lit Faith's face at that. "And we could discuss the fact that I'm predictable, which means Ellasin is prepared for me. But not, I suspect, for you."

Maxine narrowed her eyes and peered toward the twin headstones. Faith and Padraig's, it seemed. Joined in life and reserved to share death together too. She imagined, if it were not for the children, there would be no preoccupation about the inevitable at all. Faith would not haunt this graveyard alone. Her body would lie with her husband's, and together, they'd explore the Zuudaria hand-in-hand. For a moment she pondered whether Faith meant that bit about their souls so literally. Too often she heard people prattle on about soulmates and that sort of nonsense. With Faith, however, things seemed to be just what she said they were no matter how bizarre at face-value. Speaking of bizarre...

Maxine turned at the second voice. Her brow raised at the chalk-outline come to life on the other woman's shoulder. She blinked at him, half listening and half processing the nonsensical nature of what she was seeing. Without a word she slipped her hand into her pocket and retrieve her ambrosia joint. She held the white, rolled parchment up before her eyes.

Nope. I didn't smoke it.

"Can't tell if I prefer you with the wings, PB," Maxine regarded the bunny frankly. Questioning the very creature's existence felt like a waste of time. It wasn't too long ago she had the companionship of an Emean badger. She frowned briefly at memory of Beatrice. She shook that away, too. Faith had her full attention when she mentioned someone of interest in Scalvoris. Faith held the scribbled-on parchment for her to glance over for herself. An irritable sigh exhaled from the ex-convict. She'd read the damned words if she knew how.

"Someone's been chatting with Kura," Maxine speculated, pulling her eyes off the paper she couldn't read as quickly as they rested upon it. The Councilor had chosen Maxine to go with Rey'na and Sephira to Rynmere on the admission she believed Max "rides chaos well." Now another sought her services for a similar reason. She listened carefully to the request, remaining silent to think over her response carefully.

"I have enough connections to the underworld and black markets in Scalvoris. I have some powerful people in those areas I can work with now that we've settled our bad blood. I have to warn you. There's a lot of people 'messing' with Scalvoris. I've been one of those people for a long time. Unless you have specifics on what this person is doing, it's going to take time." She got up from her seat on the bench. Her head was starting to pound and her nerves jumping out of her skin. Her thoughts were beginning to feel hazy. The junkie lit the end of her joint on a hanging lantern and wandered back over to the bench, puffing on the Ambrosia. Her pupils dilated with the rush of needed chemicals. Her mind started to race, the world becoming clear.

"There was a name," Max admitted to the Champion of Famula before dropping back into her seat. She leaned back in the bench, watching the Ambrosia smoke lazily twirl upward from the fiery end of her joint. "Blackwood used to go on about this guy. Some Element connected to the Cultists, she said. I was always preoccupied with the devil I knew, Francis Higglebottom. He'd worn the Earth Mask." She pulled the joint back and extended an arm along the back of the bench. Her head dipped lower to find Faith's gaze. "She said this Orrick guy was the mastermind, even above Francis. He's a ghost to me. I haven't heard anything in a long time. I'll see if I can find anything on him, even just to rule him out. I'll cast a wide net in general. See what I can find."

Her Ambrosia-energized mind was going through a million possibilities. Faces, names, and locations were spinning on the wheel of strategy. The Red Ravens. Prostitutes. Lower dealers. Mercenaries. The docks. Each had a unique opportunity to provide what Faith was looking for. The sooner she could enlist favors, the better. The Lounge would be an easy meeting place to coordinate and start her search. Yes, she knew what to do.

"A banishment back to Scalvoris works," Max admitted, inhaling another round of poison deep into her lungs and holding it. "I have business there to tend to. I'll send you word if and only if I have something to share. My debt to Slags Deep was paid, but Kura was quick to remind me that Scalvoris might have something to say about my sixty-seven years early release. I'm free. Fuck papers, but when all is said and done here, I expect you'll add your endorsement to my papers all the same." She turned her head to peer off the bench, tapping the joint on the edge of the bench. Ashes spilled onto the ground.

"Blackwood has the annoying ability to spy on me whenever she feels like it. You'll have a sense of Scalvoris through her, through me. That also means your camp can see and hear my end, but I'm deaf and blind to yours. That disadvantages me." She sighed before reluctantly reaching into another pocket. When her hand reappeared, it held a gold bracelet. For a moment her gaze seemed locked to it. Her head tilted. She had two, a set. Logic suggested to her that someone had once worn the other with her but...she couldn't...she couldn't remember. She shook her head, remembering herself and offering the bracelet to Faith. "Give it to Blackwood. If she wears it, it'll make this a two-line communication...sort of. Better than nothing. Tell her it's from me, that I ask she wears it." It was a rare thing Maxine asked anything of anyone. "I can leave to-trial. Anything else while I'm over there? Or that I should know?"

The irritated sigh and the quick eye movements suggested to Faith that Maxine wasn't actually reading the words. That she probably couldn't, in fact. But talking to Kura? Faith smiled. "Kura is an old and dear friend, yes. She officiated our wedding, in fact. However," she added, just in case Maxine thought differently. "I've never spoken to her about you. I find it better to make my own judgements about people. Always have." That was more than true and, in and out, Faith had encountered Maxine. Chaotic, angry, passionate, these were all words she would use based on her own observations. And, as much as she felt that Max deserved to be punished for her part in the riots, Faith also recognised that the woman had come to help in the relief effort. A conundrum, certainly, but then the one thing that wasn't surprising about people was their tendency to be a contradiction.

As Max spoke of what she would do, what was happening on Scalvoris, Faith simply listened. There was no doubt that, when it came to this sort of thing, Max knew far better than she did and so it was apropos for Faith to simply listen and see what she could do. As she paid attention, thoughts and considerations came into Faith's mind and, when Max was done ~ including her expectation of Faith's endorsement ~ then she was quiet for a few moments. Her fingers pressed close together, but other than the slightest whitening of the pads of skin, she was still. Her mind worked, ticking over and considering just how to say what it was that she knew she was going to. She took the bracelet and nodded her head, then spoke in a calm and quiet voice.

"I appreciate it. Thank you," it was the first and most polite thing to say. Faith was under no illusion as to why Max was doing this, and it certainly wasn't for her, but still it was worth notice and note, and so she said it. "I can offer two things which will assist you. Both freely offered, and feel free to take or leave them, as you choose." Breathing in, Faith paused and then spoke. "By both cutting ourselves and mingling blood, I can initiate what is called a blood link with you. It will mean that you can borrow my ability to read. It might help. Also, I can put a mark on you. It's temporary and only you and I can see it. It links us." It would mean, Faith explained, that they could share snippets of thought, that Faith would know where Max was - no matter how far. "And that's helpful. But the two most useful things are that it means you will be unable to be manipulated mentally, by magic or divine means, and it means that I can teleport you to me in the blink of an eye, should things get tricky. You can call me to you in the same way." Faith smiled and gave a slight shrug. "As I say, up to you."

As for whether there was anything else, Faith shook her head. "I suspect you are entering a place I have little to no knowledge of." The Scalvoris Max was talking about was not the Scalvoris Faith knew. It was like the view of the great Rynmere Noble Houses from the point of view of a slave, compared to a Duke which really made her understand that distinction. Faith looked at Maxine and she smiled. "I rather suppose, I'll just have to trust." She didn't like it, but she knew that there were things which were not best dealt with by her. "I'm sure Kura and Sephira will beat back everything they can, but I think your information could be vital."

That said, she waited to see what Max wanted to do. If she wanted one, or both, of the marks Faith offered, then she would do that. A shared mingling of blood for one, and a simple touch of a cool hand on Max's arm for the other. But if Max didn't wish them, then Faith wouldn't push. It simply wasn't her way.

Maxine carefully watched as Faith took the Kindred Bracelet and nodded her agreement. She let out brief, focused sigh. Leaving Rharne probably contradicted the entire concept of the Special Assistant's reason for wanting her in this fight. No matter how one shook it, however, leaving the military camp was the only thing left for the ex-convict to do. She was of no use here at the moment, even at her best. At her worst, which she had been as of late, she was picking fights with Elements and killing her last brain cells with booze and drugs. Any grace she might've had was just about gone now. The ex-convict was aware of that. The evidence rested in the cringe-worthy bruising and swelling still healing on her face and body. Sometimes, she'd painfully found, the best way she served her allies was far from their side.

The silence from Faith caught her attention. As War General of Famula's army, she'd gotten used to listening to the woman make demands and give rousing pep talks to her resources. At first, Max couldn't help but wonder if the quiet was a sign of trepidation over officiating her final decree of release. The pads of her fingers squeezed at the edge of the stone bench. She could feel the fine grains of stone providing resistance against her skin. Her fear turned out to be a fallacy. Faith wasn't thinking about how she wanted to voice her refusal. She'd been deciding whether to sweeten the deal.

Maxine eyed the Zuuda skeptically. She was being offered quite a lot here. With a simple blood pact, she would be able to read. She could write. She'd be invulnerable to magic and divinity that toyed with her mind. In an instant, from halfway across the world, one could summon the other. She tilted her head. How could she decline the opportunity to have Faith Augustin instantly teleported to her side? A greedy smirk twitched at the corners of her lips briefly. Famula had seen it fit to saddle the woman with a world's worth of resources. Both Rharne and Scalvoris dedicated sizable armies after one letter. This was clout Maxine could truly use.

"You don't have to convince me," Maxine commented on Faith's suggestion Kura and Sephira could hold their own. "I was once one of those things they had to beat back. I still remember it well." Probably too well. That trial would live in infamy forever in her mind, and all her feelings associated with it, too. The flex of power surrounding Faith's forces suggested Ellasin would be no match, regardless of where she was and what forces of her own she'd gathered. It was looking more and more likely that this would be a skirmish rather than a war.

"Okay then," the ex-convict shrugged, taking out a knife and wasting no time in cutting a line across her palm. Blood leaked up through the shallow wound she'd inflicted upon herself. She extended her hand toward the Champion. Her expression was guarded, but there was no waver in that offered blood. Max merely follow Faith with her eyes as the woman did likewise and their blood mingled. Then there was a cool touch upon her arm. The two offered marks were planted. Now it was time to test their integrity.

Max gingerly took the initial letter back for a second look. She held it up before her eyes, peering suspiciously over the top of it toward Faith before focusing on the ink. Her eyes bounced from one nonsense letter to the next, then on and on. Her lips silently moved. It was only when she was half-way through the letter that she realized she was actually and inexplicably reading. She might've smiled with amusement had the content of the intelligence not been so ominous. She quickly handed the letter back.

"Someone is targeting the Council?" Max asked rhetorically, expression flaring with angry understanding. Honestly, she didn't give a shit about the people who held those seats. Ellasin's agent could slit every last one of their throats for all the ex-convict cared. Every. Last. One. Save for one. "I'll find the son of a bitch. You leave that to me." Find them or raze the whole island if that's what it took. That's how dark her mental head-space had gotten. She rose from the bench, raging hangover settling in as soon as she was on her feet.

"I'm not leaving to-trial," Max announced her change of mind. "I'm leaving right fucking now. Just give Blackwood that bracelet and keep Kura busy here." Then, just like that, she was storming out of the graveyard toward the exit of the Zuudaria. No respectful nod like a diplomatic politician. No salute like a disciplined, well-mannered soldier. Faith wanted The Wildcard. Formalities and pleasantries kicked unkindly to the wayside, Maxine demonstrated a woman of action with her departure. No talking about it, just being about it. And there wasn't a moment of precious time she cared to spare.

Had she known Maxine's thoughts, Faith would have been un surprised to realise that her own were the opposite. The more she knew of this, the more she realised that this was far, far from a skirmish. It was enormous, and growing bigger with every stone she unturned. Ellasin was ... Immortals only knew how old and Faith was afraid that this was all just far... far too much for them. And Maxine was more than alone, if she went and did this, so Faith offered to help her the best way she could. Because, Faith recognised, the woman was alone and was offering to go alone into real danger. It wasn't for her, it wasn't for the cause - it wasn't anything even to do with Ellasin, Faith believed. It was loyalty to Sephira, to Kura maybe too - and, of course, to Qit. It was strange, really, how they both circled many of the same people, yet their own dealings were far ~ far from cohesive. Yet, in this moment, she didn't have time to care about that. If they lived, she'd worry. Maybe.

But Maxine agreed and Faith took her own blade and sliced her palm without pause or question. Perhaps disconcertingly, she didn't bleed normally. Her blood didn't flow until she bade it do so and then, it flowed as much as it needed to in order to mingle with Maxine's. There had been a time when she might explain it, or try and do so, but frankly at this point she figured that there was nothing that she needed to tell Maxine. Faith was growing harder, she knew that, more distant and colder. Yet that was ok with her, because she needed to protect herself.

Instead, she simply observed as Max worked it out for herself. Then, as she did, Faith nodded. "They are," targeting the Council that was.Faith watched Max as she stood and said that she was leaving right now. Faith nodded her head. "I'll pass over the bracelet and, I believe you've met Kura? I'll do my best, but I'm not going to try and babysit her." Faith's gaze was calm, placid almost. "She taught me how to shop. I had no idea, I'd never been free before. She knew me as a slave, as a free woman. Many, many arcs. now. " Many more than Maxine had, and in more and increasingly unusual situations. "So, no. I won't be responsible for Kura. She's a grown up. But I'll do my best."

As for busy here? Faith wanted to allow herself to laugh hysterically. Keep Kura busy? She could barely contain herself, but contain herself she did. "I'll do my best," she repeated and she smiled. It was a tight, tense and rather uncertain smile. "Be safe Maxine." It was the best she could give, except for the other thing she did which no one would ever know but her.

Which was that she bit back the "I'll try not to lose anyone you call sister," comment. In a way, Faith figured, it was a shame no one knew. But mostly, it was a very, very good thing.

First, let me say, both of your post templates are awesome.

Second, Max needs direction and focus, and who better to provide it than War General Faith?

Max's uncertainty about whether PB was a drug-induced hallucination amused me. PB is such a quirky, almost cartoon-like sidekick character that adds in a bit of fluff to what could otherwise have been a dour and serious affair. I liked how quickly Max adapts to what needs to be done.

Faith seems to be taking on her general role well, focused and ...a bit tense. That makes sense though, going after an Arch-Necromantress would be a little stressful. Maybe Max should give her some of that ambrosia and they can chill in the graveyard for a while more.

Great job the both of you and enjoy your rewards!
