Hélice: The Island of Kephallonia
Overview

Image

Kephallonia is the third largest and third most populous island of Hélice, with around seven thousand inhabitants. Out of all of the Helian islands - even in comparison to Koros - it is perhaps the most bizarre in culture and political landscape. Kephallonia is occupied by dozens of tribes that frequently war among themselves and with one another, saturated in a masculine culture of dominance and martial superiority. For this reason the entire island is seen as a land of savages who will frequently attack strangers without reason, with many of the inhabitants being looked down upon like animals by surrounding Helians. As they commonly sport tribal and minimalistic attire due to the warm and humid inland climate, their appearance only tends to reinforce such stereotypes.

Also strange is the fact that - unlike much of Helice - almost all of Kephallonia's major settlements are inland. The island's coasts are very mountainous and tend to be poor for travel, and as a result much of the towns and villages of the island are built within valleys at the feet of mountains. The interior is covered in lush rainforests and farmlands in-between, with plantations of all sorts. As a result of their non-reliance on fishing and the fertile lands within the mostly flat interior, Kephallonia - since being inhabited in Arc 583 - has begun to grow very quickly, and if not for its perpetual warring and frequent decimation of its settlements would have likely surpassed Tyros and even Theros in denizens some time ago.

The people of Kephallonia carry a distinct fondness for Adrius, the Helian God of Death, and have several temples to him that are commonly visited. It is very common for the temple grounds to be soaked in blood due to those of rival tribes meeting, and such actions are seen as gifts of pilgrimage to the hungering God. Considering the uniquely physical culture of the Kephallonians, prayer and other such verbal rituals are frowned upon and most tend to view worship as something to be done through action. They are, as a result, very hard workers who tend to immerse themselves and their lives in their occupations, most typically field-work, farming, hunting and construction.

Demographically, Kephallonia is largely human due to the very limited number of coastal settlements. However, there is a somewhat significant population of Lotharro and Ithecal residing on the island that were once slaves before the Quacian cataclysm, with many believing this to contribute to their warrior culture. Due to the isolation of the islanders to even the other islands of Helice, Kephallonians carry a distinctly unique dialect that is most often categorized as brusque and guttural. Much of their dialogue is saturated in slang and simplifications, further adding to negative stereotypes regarding their intellect. Kephallonians are known among Helians to be apt practitioners of Becoming, with a level of unorthodox totemic worship of animals and other natural entities permeating their culture, though they consider such beings to be children of the Five Helian Gods.

Hadrana

Image

The most populous dwelling in Kephallonia, Hadrana is the largest settlement of the Hydara, a brutal and monolithic tribe known for producing the greatest warriors in Helice. It is known for possessing some of Helice's most opulent buildings and providing the highest standards of living of any town for its tribesmen, but with countless slaves and indentured laborers dwelling in tents and other slums in the grounds below the settlement's stone walls.

Hadrana carries around five hundred residents, though this does not include the slaves and unrepresented civilians of the surrounding territory. It is led by a man named Paraius, a warrior raised in the very same area and a man considered to be the greatest fighter in Helice. It is known that many of the Hydara are mages and tend to carry unique mutations that mark their distinction within society.

As a final note, Hadrana carries some of the most impressive fortifications in Helice, and despite the fairly tribal nature of Kephallonia it possesses a well-armed and armored professional military, though small in number.
