Journey to Skywatch Keep

1st Ymiden, 720

"We're free. We're really finally free." Seira said as she looked at her twin, Seri.

Though her words were quiet, her voice was filled with excitement. Totrial marked a big event in their lives. They had finally graduated from school. At seventeen, that seemed like an odd thing to say. Most people finished school at fifteen, after all. But before coming to Rharne, their lives had been difficult. They had gone to school when they could, of course. Unfortunately, that has not been all that often. With no parents or guardians to look out for them, they had been completely on their own. Having an abandoned house to live in helped to protect them from the elements, but it had done nothing to keep them fed. While most kids focused on school, and planning out their lives when they graduated, Seira and Seri had had to work hard just to scrape together enough money to keep themselves from starving.

That had all changed when Vivian adopted them. She was a wonderful mother to them, and there wasn't a single thing that the twins wouldn't do if she asked it of them. And one of the things she had wanted was for them to finish their schooling. Neither of them minded that. They both loved learning. But it had been quite a shock to them to realize just how far they had fallen behind the rest of their age group. They had needed two extra arcs to catch up and learn everything they needed to in order to graduate.

Seri grinned at her sister.

"Yes we are. What do you want to do now?"

Most people in their position tended to celebrate their accomplishment for a while before moving on to the next stage in their lives. But Seira and Seri already knew what they wanted to do. Their adopted mother was a Lightning Knight, and they wanted to join the Knights as well. In part, it was a way to thank Vivian for everything she had done for them. But that was only part of it. By watching Vivian, and the other Lightning Knights, they saw what the Lightning Knights stood for. They protected the people of Rharne in a way they never really saw the Iron Hand do back in Rynmere. Protecting the innocent was a cause that the twins could truly believe in, and want to be a part of.

From watching Vivian and the other Knights, they had learned that there were different branches within the Lightning Knights, and that each branch did different things. They didn't know much about the different branches, but what they did know was that three of the four branches saw combat a lot in the course of their duties. But one branch seemed to focus more on ways to help the people that didn't involve fighting. And that appealed to the twins a great deal. They wanted to learn more about that branch if they could.

They knew that anyone could go to Skywatch Keep in the Sky Quarter and join the Knights just by signing up. What happened after that though was the real question. Several of their classmates believed that there would be a test of some kind; that anyone who wanted to join the Knights had to prove themselves worthy of doing so. Neither of them were fighters, but they knew that they would be able to learn how to defend themselves once they joined. So the test was probably more of a way to determine what branch they would be assigned to rather than something that would keep them from joining if they failed. Even so, since they wanted to join the branch that focused more on non combat ways of helping the people of Rharne, it wouldn't hurt to try and learn a few things before they went to sign up.

"I think we should see if the Order of Adunih will allow us to volunteer to help them for a while. Hopefully we can learn a few things if they'll let us. That way we'll be better prepared for the test they'll give us when we join."

Seri agreed that that would be a good idea, so the two girls made their way to the Order Outpost in the Earth Quarter.

When the twins reached the outpost, it was bustling with activity. Members of the Order who were wearing a variety of different colored cloaks went about their business, and Seira watched them, looking for someone she might ask about volunteering there for several breaks.

"Shouldn't you kids be in school? Unless one of you needs treatment?" an imposing looking woman wearing a blue cloak asked as she approached them with a frown.

Seira and Seri exchanged a resigned glance. A few arcs of good food under Vivian's care had helped them to fill out to the point that they didn't look like half starved waifs anymore. But arcs of not getting enough food had taken their toll on the twins. Neither of them had grown much, and at 4'1", they were often assumed to be much younger than they actually were.

"No, we're fine. And we're seventeen, ma'am. You can even ask our teacher if you want. We missed out on a lot of school when we were younger so it took us two arcs longer than normal, but we graduated totrial." Seira assured her.

The woman looked at them suspiciously for a few trills, then accepted their story as truth. It would be easy to confirm their story if she decided to call them on it, and for that reason, she decided that they were probably telling the truth.

"What do you need, then? As you can see, we're quite busy." the woman said briskly.

Seira nodded.

"We were hoping to be able to volunteer for a few breaks totrial."

In anticipation of the question that the woman was likely to ask, she continued.

"Seri and I don't have any medical training, but we are hoping to join the Lightning Knights later totrial. We thought that it would be a good idea to know a little about medicine because we want to join the branch that serves as field medics more than actual fighters. And we were hoping to volunteer here in order to learn a little as we work."

The woman considered her request. Skilled help would be better than having someone who had no idea what they were doing, of course. But any pair of hands could be useful, and there were plenty of simple tasks that didn't involve treating patients that they could do. And in doing them, they would be freeing up someone who did have more skill for other work. So she agreed, and thanked them for the offer.

She led them into a room that smelled strongly of herbs. So much so that the scent was almost overpowering. Several people were bustling around The twins tried their best to stay out of the way of the people who were moving about as she bought them over to a middle aged woman who was wearing a blue cloak with three white trims on the sleeves.

"These two don't know anything about medicine, but they were hoping to volunteer their time here in the hopes of learning a few things. Think you can put them to good use?" their guide asked the woman briskly.

The blue cloaked woman gave them a calculating glance. Then she nodded.

"If they can take directions, I can." she said firmly.

Seira and Seri nodded quickly.

"Good. I'll leave them in your hands, then."

Their guide left, and the other woman looked them over again.

"My name's Zerith. We're completely out a lot of the herbal remedies that we use here due to some idiot who forgot to take stock of our supplies and let us know that we were running low on them. I'm sure that even kids like you can understand how important it is to not run out of supplies. It is even more important when those supplies are critical ones that someone's life might rely on."

Seira and Seri exchanged wide eyed glances before turning back to the woman and nodding in agreement. They ignored the comment about them being kids out of a desire not to bring the woman's obvious ire down upon themselves. If they did, she might decide not to let them volunteer their services.

"The first task I'm going to give you is simple enough. Do either of you know what an infused oil is?"

The twins shook their head, and the woman frowned.

"Well...Ceri did say that you didn't know anything about medicine. And at least you're honest. So. An infused oil is exactly what it sounds like; an oil that has been infused with herbs. You're going to be making them."

Zerith eyed them closely to make sure that they were paying attention.

"When making infused oils you need a one quart jar, a carrier oil and some herbs which can be either fresh or dried. If you are using fresh herbs, they need to be allowed to wilt for a full twenty four breaks before using them to help to get rid of some of the water content and they should be chopped before use. Dried herbs should be cut and sifted before you use them. Do you understand it so far?"

The twins nodded.

"Good. Put the herbs into the jar. If the herbs you're using are fresh, fill the jar until it is three quarters of the way full. If the herbs are dried, fill it half way with the herbs. Then cover them with your carrier oil so that they are completely submerged in the oil. There needs to be at least an inch of oil over the top of the herbs. You will need to use something to push all of the herbs under the oil and release all of the air bubbles."

Zerith hesitated for a trill before continuing.

"If you were going to be making the oils from start to finish, you would have to do this several times throughout the first trial. And if the herbs you're using are fresh, they will rise to the surface for the first seventrial or two, so you would have to check on them periodically and push them back down. If you don't do that, there is a good chance that the herbs will get moldy or turn rancid. You won't have to worry about that, though. Once you fill the jars, you can use the lid of the jar to cover them if you are using dried herbs. But if the herbs you are using are fresh, you'll need to cover the opening of the jar with cheesecloth instead. That will allow the water from your herbs to evaporate and escape the oil, which will decrease the chances of it turning rancid. When you've done all of that, you put the jar in a place that is sunny and warm, but not hot. The sun will help with the infusion of the herbs into the oil. It is very important that you label the jars with the type of herbs and oil that you used. If you forget, it will be impossible to tell what the infused oil is, and it will be useless."

"How long does it take for the herbs to infuse the oil?" Seira asked curiously.

"Twenty eight to forty two trials. After that time, you would need to strain the herbs out of the oil if they were fresh when you put them into the oil. You will want to keep the oil covered with cheesecloth for a couple of trials after you strain it so you can check to see if any water gathers at the bottom of the jar. Should that happen, you will need to extract the oil from the jar, leaving a thin layer of it on top of the water so that you don't take any of it by mistake. Then you can put the oil into a new jar. If they were dried, the herbs can stay in the oil until it is needed. When you are ready to store your infused oil, you need to put it in a brown or cobalt colored glass jar and store it in a cool, dry, dark place. You will need to label the oil with the date that it was made because an infused oil is only good as long as the shelf life of the oil you used to make it. Past that, it will turn rancid. But you can add a few drops of myrrh or rosemary essential oil to the infused oil when you store it in order to increase it's shelf life. Any questions?"

Seira and Seri shook their heads in unison.

"Good. I'll give you a list, and let you get to work. Once you've finished the list, or if you have any questions later, come find me. You can find the jars you will need in the cabinet over there." she said as she gestured to the cabinet she meant.

"The herbs and oils you will need are in the larder, and they are all labeled clearly so you should have no trouble finding what you need."

Seira and Seri took the list they were given, and got to work. The list was easy enough to follow. Every item on the list was numbered, so they started with the first one, which was dried lavender and almond oil. Seira got the lavender and the almond oil that they needed from the larder while Seri got the jar. Then Seri began writing the label they would need while Seira began sifting the dried lavender. When that was done, she put the dried lavender into the jar and help it so that Seri could pour the oil in. Since the required herb was dried, they covered the jar with the lid that came with it before they set it on a sunny windowsill so the herb could infuse into the oil.

The second item on the list was chamomile and olive oil. But this time, it called for fresh chamomile instead of dried. The two girls split the work between them as they had before. And they continued to proceed down the list in the same way. Neither of them knew what any of the herbs they were using were good for. But they didn't have to. All they had to do was put the herbs in a jar and add oil to it. Nor did they have to know which oil went with each herb because the list told them exactly what was needed. And since all of the oils and herbs were clearly labeled, it didn't matter that they couldn't tell one from the other if their lives depended on it; all they had to do was read the label.

When they finished starting the infused oils on the list they had been given, Seira and Seri went to look for Zerith to see if she had anything else they could help out with.

They found her in the far corner of the room they'd been working in.

"You've finished with the list I gave you?" she asked briskly.

The twins nodded in unison.

"Good. I'll check over the work you did later, but as long as you can read and follow directions, the work should have been easy enough."

The twins nodded again.

"The next thing I'm going to do is have you help me make some healing salves. A healing salve is an oil based medicine that is used topically. It consists of a carrier oil that is infused with herbs, resins or other medicinal compounds and then is thickened with a bit of wax for easier use. Beeswax is the wax that is most commonly used, but others can be used as well. Healing salves can hold their shape outside of the container they are stored in, but may melt when they come into contact with body heat. Any questions?"

Seira considered asking what other kinds of wax could be used to make a healing salve, but after a few trills, she decided that it didn't matter. Not right now, at least. She only needed enough basic information to pass the test she would face to get into the branch of the Lightning Knights that she and Seri wanted to join. Once they had done that, they would get the training they needed to be of use to them. So after a quick glance at her twin, they shook their heads.

"Good. Making a salve isn't much harder than making an infused oil. In fact, you already know the first step."

When the twins just looked confused, she chuckled.

"Most healing salves are made with just a few ingredients; often just three ingredients are enough to get the job done. And those ingredients are herbs, oil, and beeswax, or another type of wax. There’s a base oil that helps to carry the medicines, while at the same time moisturizing and nourishing the skin. Most types of oil will work, and in most cases the choice is determined by personal preference. What that boils down to is that the first step in making a healing salve is to make an infused oil with the herbs that you want to work with."

Understanding dawned in Seira's and Seri's eyes, and they grinned.

"Once you have a herbal infused oil, making a healing salve only takes a few bits. The first step is to place the oil into a heatproof bowl. Then you need to add about an inch of water to a small pot, and then place the bowl on top of the pot to make a simple double boiler. This will allow you to gently heat the oil over the heat of the water below. The goal is to warm the oil just enough to melt the wax that you've chosen to use. In order to do this, it will only take a bit above the simmering water to warm the oil. The ratios for oil and wax vary considerably based on both personal preference and on the recipe you are using to make the salve. They can vary from anywhere between one part wax to four parts oil and one part wax to twelve parts oil. The amount of wax you use will determine how solid the salve is."

When Zeirith looked at them pointedly, Seira and Seri nodded to show that they understood what she had told them.

"For the salve we are making totrial, we will be using one ounce of wax for every cup of infused oil. Since the most common way to buy beeswax is to buy large chunks of it, a heaping spoonful of wax is roughly the equivalent of an ounce. The exact measurement is not important, and really the amount of beeswax in a herbal salve is totally up to the user. If the salve is not thick enough for your liking, all you have to do is melt the salve back down and add more beeswax. And if it’s too thick, you just melt it back down and add more infused oil to it. Once the wax is melted, remove the bowl from the heat and pour it into containers. Small tins or jars are perfect for this because they are easy to carry around with you. Then you simply wait until the salve has cooled down to room temperature, and is in a semi solid consistency before using it."

"What kind of salve will we be making?" Seri wanted to know.

"A willow bark salve."

"What is willow bark used for?" Seira asked.

"Willow bark is just what it sounds like; the bark of a willow tree. It can be used as a remedy in a variety of ways. Some people just chew the bark directly. Others drink it as a tea. It can also be used in tinctures, or topically in salves like the one we are going to make. As for what it is used for, we use it to ease pain. It works the best against minor pain, but it can take the edge off of more severe pain. This herb is especially useful in treating headaches and menstrual pain. It also has the ability to reduce inflammation, so we use it to treat people who have arthritis. It will also help with sprains and strained muscles. Willow bark can be used to lower fevers and to help with weight loss as well. Do you have any more questions?"

Neither of them did, so Seira shook her head. Then it was time to get to work.

Unlike before when Zerith left them to their own devices to follow the list she had given them, this time she supervised their every action. The older woman had already gotten the bowl and the pan that they would need, and had turned the stove on. And she watched closely when she told Seira to pour the oil into the bowl while Seri measured the beeswax that they would need. Only when she was satisfied that both tasks had been done correctly did she add the water to the pan and put it on the stove.

Once it was simmering, Zerith had Seira put the bowl over the pan so that the oil could warm up enough to melt the wax that Seri had put into the bowl. It didn't take long. When the wax had melted, they took the pan off of the stove, and set the bowl on a nearby table. Then they split the still warm salve into five small glass jars, filling each with the willow bark salve they had just made.

"Not bad for a couple of kids who didn't know anything about medicine when you first came here."

"We're not..."

Seira sighed.

"Nevermind." she said in resignation.

Seira wondered how long it would be before people realized that they weren't children any more. And from the look in her sister's eyes, she could tell that Seri was thinking the same thing. But Zerith was still talking, and it would be rude not to listen to her.

"If this is something that interests you, you should consider joining the Order. We can always use people who are willing to learn and can follow directions. Even if this isn't what you want to do with your lives, you can come back and volunteer again whenever you want."

It was clearly a dismissal, and Seira recognized it as such. She and Seri thanked Zerith for letting them help her. Then they took their leave.

Re: Journey to Skywatch Keep

Seira and Seri entered the Pilgrim's Ascent and began the long, arduous climb up the stairs to the Sky Quarter. A young girl approached them a few bits later and asked them if they wanted to buy a stormflower. The young girl's clothes were raggedy and worn, and her hair looked like it could use a good brushing. But for all of that, she had a beautiful smile, and her eyes were bright as she watched them hopefully.

There really was only one response to that question as far as Seira was concerned. It wasn't all that many arcs ago when that little girl could have been them had they been born here in Rharne instead of in Rynmere. The stormflowers that children sold here in the warm seasons and the crandles that they sold in the cold seasons weren't expensive, but the twins knew that the money the children made from selling them was a valuable income for their families. Or for the children themselves if they were on their own. So whenever either of them were approached, they bought a stormflower or a crandle. It was a way that they could help children who were much like they used to be themselves now that they were in a position to be able to do so.

"We'll take two; one for each of us."

Seira smiled as she pulled out the required amount of money and handed it to the little girl. The child beamed at them as she handed them two of the pretty blue flowers. Then she ran off in search of another customer. The twins watched her vanish into the crowd before they began their ascent once more.

"Do you remember when we climbed the whole Pligrim's Ascent on our sixteenth birthtrial?" Seri asked several bits later.

Seira nodded. That...had been an interesting trial. Several of their friends had gotten them drunk and dared them to climb the Pilgrim's Ascent from top to bottom. Seira had deep misgivings about alcohol since as a child in Rynmere, she and Seri had encountered more than their share of violent drunks. But it was a tradition here in Rharne, and the two girls really wanted to fit in to their new home. So they agreed. And they succeeded. It had taken them the entire trial, but they did it. And it was a memory that they shared...and would probably laugh over for the rest of their lives.

When they reached the top of the Pilgrim's Ascent, they made their way to Skywatch Keep. It was an intimidating looking building. But at the same time, there was a regal beauty to it. At least that's what Seira thought as she and her sister walked along the causeway leading up to the building. There were five Lightning Knights patrolling the causeway. They looked at the twins, but didn't stop them or question their purpose for being there.

Once past the main gate, they were directed to the main building. The sight that greeted them was a beautiful stained glass window depicting Ilaren in battle, throwing lightning bolts at her foes while surrounded by Lightning Knights. Seira allowed herself a few trills to imagine herself as one of those Knights. But rather than fighting, she would be working behind the scenes to help heal the injured. Or perhaps she would be delivering an important message to the Knight who was in charge. Either way, she would be helping the people of Rharne...her people.

She was directed to a young man sitting behind a simple wooden desk. The man looked to be a few arcs older than she and Seri were, and Seira overheard him proudly telling the person in front of them that he was a squire. When it was there turn to be helped, the twins approached the desk.

"Hi! My name is Sebastian. How can I help you totrial?"

His enthusiam made Seira smile a little.

"I'm Seira Shiryu, and this is my twin sister Seriel Shiryu. We would like to join the Lightning Knights please."

Sebastian's eyes widened.

"Shiryu? Are you related to Vivian Shiryu? She's a famous Lightning Knight, just like my father is! I want to be a Knight just like him some trial. But right now, I'm just a Squire, and it's my duty to serve as the receptionist. Still, this is an important duty too, right?"

Seira nodded.

"I think it is. And yes...well, sort of. Vivian Shiryu adopted us when we were younger."

"You're just like me, then! All three of us have parents who are famous Knights, and we want to follow in their footsteps!" Sebastian said excitedly.

Seira nodded again. She decided against mentioning that Vivian had asked if she could take her last name as her own.

"But in order to follow in our adopted mother's footsteps, we need to actually join the Lightning Knights." Seri said with a smile.

Sebastian blushed.

"You're right, of course. Here. Let me give each of you the form that you're supposed to fill out."

He rummaged through his desk for a few trills until he found what he was looking for. Then he gave them each a sheet of paper to fill out, and a pen to write with. Seira and Seri exchanged confused glances.

"Isn't there a test of some kind? To prove we're worthy of joining the Knights?" she asked carefully.

"Do we get tested after we fill out our forms?"

Sebastian laughed, making Seira and Seri blush in embarrasment.

"No, no. It's nothing like that. You just have to come here to Skywatch Keep and fill out this form. Then depending on your age, you're either an Initiate, or a Squire like myself. Once you're a part of the Knights, you begin your training, and you learn about the four different branches of the Knights. When you decide which one suits you the best, that's when you get tested. If you pass, you get sworn into that branch, and that's that."

It was that simple? Really? Seira and Seri exchanged glances. They didn't know whether they should feel foolish for believing they would be tested before they could join the Knights, or happy to get a start in learning the kinds of things they wanted to do for the Knights once they joined. They filled out their forms quickly, and gave them back to Sebastian.

"Welcome to the Lightning Knights!" he said with a grin.

Comments: Having Seira tell her sister that they are finally free was a good way to start the thread in my opinion. It instantly made me curious and want to find out what exactly had happened. I couldn’t help but laugh when you revealed that they had finally graduated school. I’d half expected something terrible to have taken place, so I was quite relieved!

I like how much background information you provided. That made it really easy to understand this thread. Volunteering at the Order of the Adunih is definitely a good way to prepare for the test. The scene at the outpost was well-written. Are the twins really only 4’1” though? That’s incredibly short!

Anyway, I wish Seira and Seri good luck when it comes to their future in the Lightning Knights! Hopefully, Vivian will be proud of them!

Enjoy your rewards!
