Getting A Grimoire

4th of Cylus, 719
Vivian tapped the small, blue, stylized sword on her chest and frowned slightly. She was still getting used to her witchmark and the new power surging through her. The power she had identified as Hone was still very present, but the other one, which she had come to assume was Palenon, had died down a fair bit since her Initiation, and that odd warmth she had felt during her Initiation hadn't popped up since. She guessed it was because of an odd relationship between her Blessing and her Magic. Shrugging, Vivian put her shirt on grabbed her jacket before belting on her sword. She needed to get up to the cathedral, she had to meet Stefan so she could properly begin her training.

She was still tired from the Initiation though, which surprised her a bit. She knew that healing after an injury left her tired during the process, but she hadn't expected that to be the case after being Initiated in a magic. Because of this, she was out of breath when she reached the cathedral and had to pause to rest before she headed inside, and even then she was still breathing hard when she found Stefan in an empty classroom. He smiled at her before he gestured her to a chair. "Initiation takes a lot out of you, doesn't it? It's not just you, I've been having some sensory deprivation since the initiation. It takes it out of both of us." he said, before handing her a thick book bound in black leather. "This is a Grimoire. Each Hone mage has their own, we use it to write down the runes we learn and unique methods for them. It aids in our memorization of the runes and their uses, making us more effective mages. This one is, of course, for you." he said, as Vivian took the book and opened it. It was pretty much empty, but Vivian figured that she had to fill it in herself for it to be effective for it's purpose.

Once she closed the book again, Stefan smiled. "So, for the first part of your training, we're going to focus on the first two Runes you will learn, and the most basic techniques for using them. As a beginner Runewright, you have an incredibly limited pool of Runes to call on. They're still useful and powerful, don't misunderstand me, but what you can do is limited. As you grow with your magic, the number of runes at your disposal will grow a significant amount." he said, before smiling slightly. "Now, most Runewrights just use their fingers to draw their runes, but you can use other things, such as pens and the like, and a few have even used their weapons. However, for now, we'll be sticking with using your fingers to make the rune. Now remember, write down the runes in your Grimoire after you successfully make them." he said, to which Vivian nodded.

Stefan held up a hand, one finger emitting an inky black trail as he moved it. "Runes have to be drawn on something, and as a novice Runewright, you can you only apply runes to yourself. They work through your clothes, so you don't have to take your coat off." he said, holding out his own arm and drawing a symbol that looked a bit like a dagger but without a handle on his arm. "This is a rune of strength, which does exactly what it sounds like it does. It boosts your strength in the part of the body you apply it too." he said, before looking up at Vivian. "All right, you try it now." he said, his tone calm.

Vivian nodded and began to draw the rune, but she found herself struggling with it. It wasn't that the symbol was hard to draw, she could get that done in a quick hurry, but she was having trouble doing anything. She figured she had to use magic on the rune to make it work, but she was having trouble filling it with magic. Eventually, she got the process for infusing ether into the rune down, but even then it still took a good three bits to fill the rune and was a somewhat draining process. But it was done, and done successfully and she could feel the strength in her arm. However, once she had successfully made the rune, Vivian couldn't help but like the way her runes looked, an electric blue rune that had looked to have been drawn by sword slashes.

Stefan smiled at her success, then laughed. "All right, now remember. When you use Hone, you have to be careful not to unbalance your body. You can damage yourself with reckless usage of the magic. Now, you need to know how to dismiss a rune. Simply reverse the process you used to draw the rune." he said, and Vivian nodded. She held her hand over the strength rune and took a deep breath, drawing the power she had given the rune back into herself. It was actually easier than infusing the rune, but she noticed that she didn't get as much power as she had put into the rune. Stefan nodded at her success and smiled. "All right, we're going to take a bit of a break. Using Hone is still going to be draining for you, and we're still both tired from the Initiation. Get something to drink and we'll start again in a few minutes." he said. Vivian nodded and went to get some water, surprised at how tired she was. Hone was definitely going to take some training to get the hang of if she was going to be effective with it.

Re: Getting A Grimoire

During the break, Vivian copied the strength rune into her Grimoire, specifically drawing the rune itself twice. The first drawing of the rune was as close a mimicry to how her own strength rune appeared as she could make it, making a slashing line with her pen to simulate the sword-slash like design of her runes. The second, however, was a more standard design, one that was more easily readable. Vivian knew that it was likely that her Grimoire would wind up in someone else's hands after she died, especially if she succeeded in building her House, in which case her Grimoire would ideally passed to later member of House Shiryu. In that event, whoever had her Grimoire would need to be able to read the runes simply enough. She included the design of her own runes, however, as a legacy of the first holder of this Grimoire. She felt that was important to include in her Grimoire, as it was, after all, her Grimoire first and not someone else's Grimoire.

Once she had drawn in the strength rune and filled out what she knew about it in her Grimoire, Stefan nodded at her and smiled. "All right, time to continue your training. Now, before we move on to the other rune you can use as a beginning Runewright, there is one more passive benefit of the magic I want to cover today. As a Runewright, you are naturally resistant to the potentially damaging side effects of your own runes. So it's harder for you to break your own bones with a strength rune, for instance. However, this resistance does not apply to runes applied to you by other Runewrights, so it's not any sort of complete immunity. You still have to be cautious if you find yourself facing another Runewright, understand." he said, and Vivian nodded.

Then Stefan nodded and held up his hand, that inky black trail following his finger again as he held out his arm. "All right, now for the next rune. The rune of touch is often overlooked by many Runewrights, but it's a very versatile rune. It enhances the sensation of touch, how much detail you feel and how much you feel in general. The main use you'll be getting out of the rune itself, without any additional tricks, is to help tell textures apart and the like on an investigation." he said, drawing the rune on his hand, the rune appearing to be a circle that had been cut in half.

Vivian nodded, then began to draw the rune into her own hand. Like with the strength rune, she had an easy enough time drawing the rune itself, but when it came time to infuse the rune with ether, she struggled again. She got it working faster than with the strength rune, but she knew she would have to improve on the three bits it took to infuse runes with ether if was ever going to be effective in combat. Or she would have to find a way to prep runes in advance, but for now she was having enough trouble making them to begin with.

However, once she got the rune made and working, she was surprised at how sensitive her touch was now. She could feel every individual strand of fiber in the glove she wore now, and she wondered what other substances might feel like with that rune empowering her sense of touch. Then she thought of how it would feel to be injured in the part of the body that a touch rune was applied to and grimaced before hurriedly pulling what ether she could out of the rune. Stefan gave her a questioning look and she grimaced slightly. "It's amazing, at first. Then I thought about how it would feel if I got injured in an area where that rune was active." she said, and he nodded.

"Aye, that's a concern. It's why the rune of touch is so rarely used, even by those that don't overlook it. It's more dangerous than you might think at first." he said, his tone serious. Then he looked down at her Grimoire. "All right, that's enough for today. You need to practice, carefully, applying runes, so you can get the process down. Remember to fill out your Grimoire, though." he said, as he stood up. Vivian nodded and began to copy the touch rune into her Grimoire, repeating the same process of drawing both runes. When she was done, they both left the room, Stefan telling Vivian to go back home and rest another day before she returned to active service, and to be cautious with practicing the two runes she was able to use. She agreed with him, she had a feeling this could easily go wrong if she wasn't careful. For now though, she was tired, and when she got home, she set her Grimoire on her desk and flopped onto her bed, falling asleep almost instantly.
