Honing In

3rd of Cylus, 719.
Vivian walked through the halls of the Lightning Cathedral, wearing her more standard casual clothes, though with her sword still belted to her side. In truth, Vivian rarely went anywhere without the sword, and many had begun to believe that Shiryu really was an extension of Vivian herself. Certainly, no one else was able to effectively use the weapon besides Vivian herself, so many had just accepted the oddness of the sword. Still though, while the familiar weight of the sword was always comforting to Vivian, she couldn't help but wonder why she had been pulled off active assignment for the day and ordered to the Lightning Cathedral.

She had been ordered to report to the offices of one of her superiors in the Inquisitors, and when she did, she was greeted by a calm woman in dress uniform and a scarred, but albeit still handsome man, in casual clothes, even moreso than her own outfit. "Ah, Shiryu. Please, sit down." she said, gesturing to a seat. Vivian nodded and took a seat before the woman continued. "This is Constable Stefan Harper. I'm sure you've heard of him." she said, gesturing to the man, who smiled at her. Vivian nodded, everyone had heard of Stefan Harper. He spent all his time undercover, catching the criminals of Rharne. Why it was apparently important he talk to her, though, she had no idea.

The woman smiled at Vivian's nod. "Stefan, this is Vivian Shiryu, a lightning lass in the Inquisitors." she said, and Vivian blushed slightly at the praise, though she couldn't help but feel pleased at the praise. "Now then, Shiryu, I'm sure you know that some of our members have various magics. The Inquisitors thought you would be one of our knights who could make good use of a magic and not fall prey to the...temptations magic can offer. The magic we're offering to initiate you in is Hone, a magic that revolves around physical enhancement." she said, pausing for Vivian's reaction. Vivian was rather surprised by the offer, she had thought she wasn't wholly trusted due to her past as a member of House Warrick and the current tensions between Rharne and Rynmere. However, she was also rather pleased to be offered the chance, she had to admit.

The woman smiled at Vivian's surprise, then her expression turned serious. "However, there is something you should know. Initiation is a risky thing. We've had knights die or even become monsters because they failed a magic initiation. There's no guarantee, if you accept, that you'll survive. I know you have children as well, and we'll take care of them as best we can if something happens, but there would be no shame in refusing." she said, her tone intent. Vivian paused and thought about that for a moment, then took a deep breath.

"Ma'am, I understand the risks, and I thank you for telling me. But my children know that I take risks for my job, and if I make it through the Initiation, I'm more protected, more likely to make it back home to them." Vivian said, her tone somber. "So yes, I understand the risks, and I accept regardless." she said, not saying that if she wasn't willing to risk her life to get stronger and become a better soldier, then she'd have only herself to blame if she came up short in her own abilities at a critical moment.

The woman nodded and looked at Stefan, who smiled and stepped forward. "Well said, Vivian." he said, his voice holding a charming, easy going tone. If Vivian didn't know Stefan by reputation, she'd have assumed he wasn't dangerous at all. "Since you've accepted, we'll be going to a secluded room for the Initiation itself. You'll be given some simpler clothes for the process, as we've had Initiates tear their clothes and such during the process itself. And of course, no weapons during the Initiation." he said. Vivian nodded at this and he smiled. "Well, shall we go ahead and get started then?" he asked, and she nodded again, before following Stefan out of the room at a nod from the woman.

Re: Honing In

The room they were using for the initiation turned out to be pretty much in the basement of the cathedral and was very sparse. Just a bed, a chair, and a lot of padding on the walls. It would have looked almost calming if it weren't so clearly designed to keep people from hurting themselves. Vivian handed off her sword to a guard outside of the room, then changed into a set of very simple clothes for the Initiation process itself. Then Stefan led her into the room and had her lay down on the bed. "All right, so what's going to happen is I'm going to place six runes on you, infusing them with ether. I'm going use runes that should help you resist the burn of the ether. What you have to do is resist the etheric burn and let it settle into you. Now, the first six runes, they won't hurt. It's the last one, the one that will become your witchmark, that will set the burn going. Now, unlike the rest of the runes, the witchmark is permanent. I can put it on either your forehead or your chest, but it's up to you where it is." he said, his tone calm, controlled.

Vivian thought for a moment, but made her decision pretty quickly. "On my chest, please. Easier to hide for undercover work, you know?" she said, to which Stefan grinned. Then his face turned somber and he gave her a large cork wrapped in robe. Something to bite down on so she wouldn't risk biting through her tongue during the Initiation. While it was perhaps more than a little unnerving, she was grateful for it, and bit down on it, anticipating the pain to come. With that in place, Stefan activated his magic and began to draw the runes on her.

Vivian noticed that Stefan's runes had a dark, inky quality to them, and wondered what that meant, but all things considered, this was a really poor time to ask. He placed six different runes on her, though she couldn't have told what they did and he wasn't forthcoming. She did feel oddly numb, though, and she couldn't have said why, except that it was probably something that Stefan did. Once all six runes were in place, Stefan took a deep breath and started to draw a seventh rune on her chest. The moment he was done, Vivian arched her back and let out a, admittedly muffled, scream of pain and surprise as her body started to burn from the inside out.

Stefan and the woman who had told Vivian she was being offered an Initiation had told her that the process would hurt like hell, but this was something else altogether. Her entire body felt like it was on fire, even through the numbing effect that Stefan had apparently put into effect. It was the worst pain she'd ever felt and she had to resist the urged to writhe around on the bed. She remembered, she had to accept the magic, accept the ether. So instead of wasting time and energy writhing around on the bed, though for all she knew she was tap dancing at the moment because literally the only thing she could feel was pain and an odd sense of warmth that seemed to be trying to lessen the pain for all that it wasn't really effective.

However, she did run up against a bit of a roadblock in that she had no idea how to convince her body to accept the ether and she couldn't really think too well through the pain she was feeling. So the only real recourse she could think of was to try and reach out with her will and grab onto the ether. How exactly she did this, she couldn't say clearly, but as she tried this, she began to feel a strange power that was trying to merge with her. She opened herself to this merger and as this new power began to merge with her, something else woke up, a storm within that eagerly embraced this new power and more eagerly seemed to merge with Vivian.

Then the pain was gone and Vivian opened her eyes. She still felt warm, and she was covered with sweat, and her jaw hurt something fierce from how hard she was biting down on the cork. Reaching up with a shaking hand, she took the cork out of her mouth and sat up. "I...think I did it. I...I feel really warm. Is that normal?" she asked, her voice shaky as she found the room spinning slightly.

Stefan smiled and pushed her back down onto the bed. "Everyone feels the magic differently. You need to sleep now, Vivian. Recover from the Initiation. Don't attempt any magic, and we'll start your training tomorrow, after your body has recovered from the ordeal." Vivian nodded and laid back down, closing her eyes. She could still feel these two new powers within herself, and she guessed one was the magic. What the was, she couldn't say for sure, but she guessed it was just an echo of the magic. Besides, it didn't seem to be hurting her, she thought as she drifted off into a much needed nap.

Comments: This thread was super cool. I really liked the premise of her being thrown at a mentor due to her position as a Knight, and the way in which the greeting and introduction were done. It was well written and very easy to visualize; so great job on the immersive thread. Enjoy your rewards!
