Order from Chaos 1: Ignorance was bliss

Image
1st Cylus, 719
A single candle burned in the window of Augustin's Boutique and would for the entire season of Cylus. Faith was here early, she'd been unable to settle at home and so had decided to come to work and try and get some things done. But, having done that and gotten everything in the shop ready, she was at the point now where she had to get on and so, she did. Salinda, the head of the Order of the Adunih, the whole Order, was coming to the Rharne Outpost to-trial and Faith had made every preparation she could. Quite why she was nervous, Faith did not know; after all, she had invited Salinda here when first she had taken over as the head of the Order here in Rharne. Faith thought it was important to meet with her direct senior. It had seemed frankly strange to her that there was very limited correspondence here between Salinda and either of the last two heads of the order in Rharne. It certainly was something which made Faith a little concerned about communication between this Outpost and the Head of the Order. She had, in Scalvoris, worked under Galena ~ the head of the Order there, and she was quite sure that Galena would have no such quibbles. Galena would have, in fact, been banging down the door of anyone that needed their door banging down.

But still, whether her nervousness was logical or otherwise, it was what she felt and Faith accepted that and moved on. She was as organised and prepared as she could possibly be, so all she had to do was get to the Order outpost and meet Salinda there. She had reviewed, and reviewed again, every process and procedure they used - she had them written out in neat boxes on her shelves, ready for Salinda to review. All of the staff had been briefed and prepared and Faith knew that there was no more that she could have done. Yet, still, she had to query it, wonder. It was very much the nature of who she was and, so, Faith went over everything again, one more time in her head as she made her way to the outpost.

She was three breaks early, which meant that she could do the last final checks of everything. These she did with relative ease and then she made her way into the clinic and got on with working. It was a relatively busy morning; Faith had noticed that the first few trials of Cylus tended to be busier; that was fine, though, she had adjusted the roster to match. Keeping records, seeing patterns and using them to plan in advance ~ those were all things that Faith did with ease, relatively speaking and so she tried to make sure that everything here ran to maximum efficiency.

It soothed her, working with patients. It was why they were all here, after all, though she got to do it less and less these trials. Something she was not happy about but, equally, the place needed to run. So, it was a welcome relief to spend a couple of breaks tending to broken limbs, infections and cuts; so much so that, when her assistant came to tell that Salinda was here, Faith had almost forgotten that the woman was due to arrive.

Almost.

"Alright, then. Let's go." Faith said and she straightened her cloak as she made her way out.

four breaks later....
"And, I think, that's everything," Faith said, with a smile. She had taken Salinda on a tour of Rharne, showing her the main outpost, the satellite clinic, the soup kitchen and community center too. "I mean, as an overview of places, and systems, that is. Obviously, there's more to the organisation than this, but I think I've given you the basics there. If there's anything else you wish to see, of course, it will be my pleasure." It wasn't like her to talk so much and Faith clamped her mouth shut, nerves threatening to overwhelm her.

Salinda had been mostly quiet throughout the tour, although she had asked questions here and there. She'd been more than friendly, but seemed happy to just let Faith explain. The head of the Order of the Adunih was taller than Faith
~ but, then, wasn't everyone. Even Nir'wei and he was tiny, Faith thought ~ and she was beautiful. Long honey-blonde hair and a gentle nature, softly spoken and obviously very friendly. Faith didn't get a sense from her that there was anything wrong, that Salinda's visit had been for any reason of concern, but then Faith figured the woman must have hidden depths which made her able to make the tough calls which came from being a medic. During the tour, Faith had seen Salinda with some of the patients in their care and there was no doubt, she had 'it'. Whatever 'it' was which meant that she was an excellent medic, good with people.

"Well," Salinda said with a soft and friendly smile, "I suppose we should cut to the chase." Faith watched her and nodded. In the time that Faith had been running the Order of the Adunih in Rharne, she had discovered that she loved doing it; it was challenging but she was making a real difference in people's lives. There was no doubt to her that she wanted to keep doing it, and she knew that was the cause of her feelings of anxiety, her nerves now. But, if she was nothing else, Faith was a disciplined individual and so she sat and looked at Salinda, calmly. In that moment, Faith realised, she was nervous, but she kept still and waited.

"I'll be blunt," Salinda spoke quietly. "I can't do this." Faith's eyebrow raised slightly as Salinda gestured around the room. "All this," the blonde woman said, gesturing to the neatly organised information. "I need to explain to you, how things have been." And that was what she did. Salinda and Shonwa, the leader of the Order before her, had worked together. Shonwa had taken care of the administration, the organisation and Salinda had focused on the care of the patients, on always providing the best medicine they could. "It worked," Salinda said and then, she gestured around. "But the Order is in shambles. Supply lines, communication, organisation. None of it. I have a mountain of paperwork and no idea how to even begin. So, I'm stepping down."

Faith looked at her in amazement. "Then who's taking over? The Order needs someone central, someone who can keep us focused. Our strength is in our sharing of resources, unity. We are known across Idalos. Who will lead?"

Salinda smiled. "I was hoping," she said softly, "that you would."

"Oh, now, what and wait a moment?" Faith looked rather surprised, to say the least. "I can help you, set up systems for you. Work with you, make sure that things are doing what they're supposed to do. That would help, yes?" Faith didn't notice the hint of panic in her voice. "Talk to me about how bad it is, we can work it out. Isonomia, the Faction I'm part of, I'd like us to be allies, we have broadly similar goals, focused on well being and health, yes? I can help." Salinda was a good healer, Faith knew, and she was sure that, with a little help, she'd be able to get the Order back in the position it needed to be.

"I'll show you," Salinda said and gestured to where there were two trunks she'd had brought with her. Faith had seen them, assumed them to be medical supplies or some other such thing. But then, they moved over to them.

The first trunk was full of pieces of parchment. Full of them. Faith looked down in shock, amazement opening her mouth as she stared at the utter chaos. "What... what is this?" Salinda shrugged slightly. "It is ... my desk. Correspondence, information. It's my inbox. About half of it." As Salinda replied, Faith's expression became ever more extreme, the surprise she felt ~ not to mention the urge to just begin to sort things out ~ almost overwhelming Famula's champion. "Half..half?" That was something which she noticed, a small detail. Or a huge one. "But that's a lot..." Faith's voice betrayed more of her emotions than she'd like and Salinda looked at Faith as the young woman floundered, trying to understand.

"I don't know how supply lines work. I can't keep up with the paperwork, so this is where we are." Salinda gestured to the many and varied bits of paper and Faith sighed. Running her fingers through her hair, Faith gestured to the wooden table with chairs around it. "Lets sit down. I'll go through the list of things that need to be done, from what I know of my job here, and then we can look at the big picture." Because the truth was, Faith thought to herself, it might just be that Salinda was bad at correspondence. Leading an organisation required many different aspects to be considered, and Faith sent a hopeful prayer to Famula, Vri, Moseke and Ymiden that Salinda had kept up with other aspects.

It took them two breaks to work through the list Faith had, with her questioning Salinda carefully on each aspect. As the time moved on, Faith felt her heart sink. If what Salinda was telling her was true, and Faith had no reason to think otherwise, then the Order of the Adunih was in a shambles. A complete shambles. Each individual outpost was more or less functioning on its own, they had lost their supply lines and communication was non-existent. At this point, Faith breathed out and leaned back in the chair. "I.. well, this needs work. It needs to be done, fixed. Organised and re-invigorated." At this point, Faith knew, they were not even aware of how many members the Order had, no notion of how many in each cloak there were. Information was more than scarce, it was non-existent.

"We need to fix this," she said and Salinda nodded. "I agree. It needs fixing. But I just.. can't."

Faith breathed in and looked at the list. Then, she lifted her head and nodded. "I can. Is this everything?" Faith gestured to the luggage in the room. Salinda shook her head. "About half of it, I'd say." Breathing in through her teeth, Faith considered that. Half of it. She nodded. "Get it all sent here. For the duration , this outpost will need to be the acting HQ. Until we can move it back." Salinda looked at Faith and the blonde-haired woman smiled. "This is a permanent decision, on my part. I am a healer, but I can not run an organisation like this. If you pass it on, then you'll do so to someone else. There's no passing it back."

Faith sighed and nodded. And PB, her little chalk-drawn bunny piped up. "Paddyrags is gonna love this!"
